Playlists and Archives for Brian Turner

Tuesdays 3pm - 6pm on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Upcoming events:

Tuesday, December 2nd, 3pm - 6pm: Cheap Time
With their rough-yet-economically-streamlined three minute anthems, this Nashville trio perfectly boil down the essential elements of snotty Killed By Death primitive punk, Sparks angularity, and glam-inspired power pop hooks perfected by the likes of Milk N' Cookies and Redd Kross (in fact RK's Steve McDonald produced their debut for In the Red Records). In a sea of garage rock combos getting in line to replicate each other, Cheap Time take a somewhat deviant path and nail some great sideways references from across the board. Turn them up this afternoon on Brian's show, and see them live all over NYC from November 20-22nd.

Tuesday, December 9th, 3pm - 6pm: Pink Reason's Kevin guest DJ's Soviet jams
Brian's donating part of the show today to the sounds of subterranean rock/punk/psychedelic/folk music from the former Soviet Union. Guest DJ will be Kevin Failure from Pink Reason (and sometimes Psychedelic Horeshit), who spent some years living with his family in Siberia and soaking in the punk rock scene there.

Tuesday, December 16th, 3pm - 6pm: Cave
Chicago's Cave have partially emerged from post-rock/post-hardcore greats Warhammer 48K, and currently are purveyors of heavy-riffing, groove-centric psychedelic rock in the realm of Hawkwind, Circle, and the brighter lights of the Krautrock legacy. Wailing guitar jams, fuzzy keyboards, propulsive percussion and total sun-staring trippiness coming through today as the band tours on the heels of a new single, wonderfully titled "Butthash."

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009, 3pm - 6pm: Puffy Areolas
For the uninitiated, Toldeo, Ohio's Puffy Areolas bring to mind the blasted, parental hope one would get from combining the DNA of The Germs, Hawkwind, Drunks With Guns, and Brainbombs. Tune in to Brian today to hear the Areolas sew some serious lysergic oats, and have a glimpse at what kinda world we'd live in if Dame Edna was in charge of putting DMT into the water supply.
