Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from September 20, 2011 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Oxbow  Live in the WFMU Studio   Favoriting Engineered by Ernie Indradat    Oxbow are not easy listening fare: half of this legendary Bay Area combo played a somewhat dark acoustic session on Brian's show in 2004 that contained one of the most harrowing, bareboned, messed-up Beatles covers in memory. Live, singer/author/1st place divisional 2003 California Submission Fighting champion Eugene Robinson has pretty much terrorized (and sometimes physically administered beatdowns to) club audiences who attempt to ratchet up the volatility factor of Oxbow shows, which are equal parts jazzed-out metalcore, deconstructed swamp-blues, and weird, laced-with-tension postrock. They're a band of great scope; Eugene's been Lee Hazlewood to both Marianne Faithfull's and Lydia Lunch's Nancy Sinatra, and their latest LP Songs For the French (Hydra Head) showcases both their live performance side and improvisational abilities. The lineup: Eugene Robinson (vocal), Niko Wenner (guitar), Greg Davis (drums/[ercussion), Dan Adams (cello). Songs today: 1000 / Down a Stair Backward / She's a Find / A Winner Every Time / Sunday (interview) /The Geometry of Business. More info at the band's site.    2:15:13 (Pop-up)

  4:14pm
dc pat:

Waterly Love = greatest group on earth.
  4:14pm
hubba:

I've known him for quite some time... he used to have roommates, one of which was a buyer at record store who hipped me to the wonderful world of dub and free jazz... I'll tell him Carmichael said "hello." What if he outs you?
  4:14pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: That's right, you've mentioned that before! One of these days...I'm going out there to see if you'll really buy a beer for anyone who shouts "Brian Turner on WFMU!" while you're there!

  4:51pm
Cheri Pi:

Not me, I'm close to 11 here.
  4:53pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cheri: Yeech! Well it's better now, but was your whole body shrilly vibrating from that feedback before?

How bout "Nails on Chalkboard"? :)
  4:53pm
BSI:

@Matt: we're just out of the Sonic Circuits fest down here (DC), so the ears are pretty compromised from several days of great noise. I hardly noticed any feedback in these headphones. Maybe I should be concerned.....
  4:54pm
BSI:

The last set was Barn Owl, which probably explains a lot, re: the hearing situation. Plugs or no plugs, it hardly mattered...!
  4:54pm
Matt from Springfield:

@BSI: It was higher-pitched, and you still might be hearing the ring in your ears from the Sonic Circuits Fest...
  4:55pm
blackgreen13:

hey, that Cold Dome not Gold Dome. Just FYI
  4:57pm
Cheri Pi:

My ear drums are safely leathered; it's dog whistles that bother me know.

  4:59pm

  5:00pm
blackgreen13:

  5:01pm
Cheri Pi:

I prefer popeye singers to cookie monster,
  5:01pm
