Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from January 10, 2012 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

kat330:

@Brian: Found the fatal flaw with DJ CD premiums: Can't be listening to FMU programming if checking out the CD -- and vice versa. Yesterday we got the Sun Ra and some others I just finished importing. J.T. and I are really looking forward to finding the time to listen to all!
  3:08pm
Matt from Springfield:

Humble Pie! Always welcome!
  3:09pm
jljl:

Wow, a 70's gem. Brian, do you know Sri Aurobindo from Baltimore? If not, check em out. They'd make perfect sense for your show.

Love the Speedwolf version of this -

Weird. I woke up this morning with this song (Cold Gin) on my mind for some reason. I think because of the little drum break on the chorus. Thanks for playing!
  3:15pm
Cheri Pi:

There aren't enough songs about Gin.
  3:15pm

@JMD: Telepathic requests welcome, though not always accepted!

First time I heard this Kiss, "Cold Gin" is a great one.

Lovin' the rock today. Gotta drown out the loudness in the studio next to me.
  4:34pm
Cheri Pi:

I bet Jerry Moss picked Status Quo- "trust me Herb"
  4:34pm
pierre:

Glad to be hear,
As i saw the playlist i thought, that one of the thing i like the most about this radio is that i discover band that i thought i knew. And by that i mean the radio's helping a lot in making me not to much of a douche.
  4:35pm
BT:

Pablo Cruise after BOC
  4:35pm
Matt from Springfield:

The only question re: Herb is, did he plan to do trumpet instrumentals of all these artists he signed in the 70s? Get a trumpet mute, and I imagine amazing things with that Status Quo...
  4:35pm
Cecile:

YES - BOC
  4:36pm
PKNY:

1st with a cowbell mention!
  4:36pm

Matt from Springfield:

Awesome Brian! Always wondered if you would ever follow up that recording with actual Pablo C.!
  4:37pm
Ike:

Well @Pierre, you're a better man than me because I am still a cock-rock-hating douche. I switched stations and I'm eyeing the playlist, patiently waiting for something good like Lightning Bolt to come on so I can come back.... :P :)
  4:38pm
Cheri Pi:

I opened Xmas gifts wearing my BT t-shirt, my alcoholic/printer brother complimented it's K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid) design.
  4:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@PKNY: Actually, the 1ST cowbell mention this show was all the way back @3:09, from paulapc:
"i hear gene frenkle"

That was Will Ferrell's character's name! :)
  4:38pm
BT:

Ike is here
  4:39pm
BT:

Ike, thered be no Lightning Bolt without Van Halen
  4:39pm
Matt from Springfield:

And that can only mean one thing...that Ike is here.
  4:39pm
Mark in VT:

Brian-

Do you know how many people got the shirts from the marathon? Or if people have bought them since? Mine really stinks but does not look terrible yet.
  4:39pm
Cecile:

I'm sure he'll be loving the Pablo Cruise, then.
  4:41pm
Matt from Springfield:

The recording again!
Oh well, I like this better than the actual Pablo Cruise!!!
  4:41pm
Cecile:

Pablo Cruise's Cory Lerios wrote the end theme to Baywatch.
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  4:42pm
paulapc:

@matt from springfield: thanks for tooting the horn. it was cheesy for me to mention, but did you FEEL the cowbell in that Humble Pie track???
  4:42pm

I likes them.
  4:42pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

  4:42pm
PKNY:

@Matt - crap! I bow down to @paulapc's infinite BOC nerdiness
  4:43pm
BT:

Mark I think theres sum left? Email Jmcgasko@wfmu.org - everyone complains they get stinky in the shirt, I think this year it will be mesh
  4:43pm
Cecile:

I felt a numbing clang in my neck muscles. That must have been the cowbell.
  4:43pm
Cheri Pi:

According to her blog, Mrs. Bobby Leibling says her infant son likes his musical elephant toy & listening toUriah Heep in his crib.
  4:44pm
Cheri Pi:

This is Wishbone Ash-I bought this album for Mr. CP for xmas
  4:44pm
paulapc:

  4:45pm
pierre:

@ Ike : if you're here, than there is no such thing as better man.
  4:45pm
Cecile:

not me, man. I fucking know who the hell was in Pablo Cruise for Christ's sake.
  4:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@paula: Sadly no--these headphones are crap, I probably didn't hear that cowbell frequency.
@PKNY: Feel not ashamed, anyone in the Fraternity of Cowbell is still cool. :)
  4:46pm
PKNY:

@paulapc - true indeed b/w really feeling this Uriah Heep
  4:46pm

  4:48pm

  4:49pm
Matt from Springfield:

Blues Image = "Ride Captain Ride"?

Clay prob. digs that one too. I keep confusing it with the "I'm Your Captain" song from Grand Funk he always plays.
  4:50pm
Cheri Pi:

Mrs Bobby Liebling is young: http://hal-coholic.blogspot.com/
  4:51pm

@Cheri: Ew, that might explain everyone's commenting today! Fact I think I got a contact high over here. Something smells like BT shirt residue.
  5:01pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Vinicius: Sounds great! I could go for a Thai curry, and/or London anytime.
  5:01pm
Cecile:

YES
  5:02pm
Mark in VT:

I also just realized that if I never wash the shirt it will be less likely to look bad because washing it fades the color and weakens the fabric over time creating the chances for holes and rips. That is what has happened to many of my other WFMU shirts. Plenty of holes and permanent stains and like the shirt is falling apart right off my body.
  5:02pm
Chris from DC:

Oh yeah, my favorite Pentagram. Thx Brian.
  5:02pm

My name is Liv Jones. When I woke up this morning, I found myself trapped in the United States in the year 2012. Am I crazy, in a coma, or back in time? Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home.

Matt from Springfield:

@Mark: Wash occasionally to wear down the fabric--and, wear it while doing your whites; bleach stains will wear it out quicker, and make orangey-white burns through the black color.
  5:04pm
bill:

liv: that happens to me every day
  5:04pm
BSI:

Yes. Vinicius: please email me a bit of that curry and twelve pints of something dark & local, please.... please....
  5:04pm
Cecile:

Cheri I have First Daze Here Too.
  5:05pm
Cecile:

Gulcher - isn't that MX-80's label?
  5:05pm
Vinicius:

ok, some local Ale then!
  5:06pm
Vinicius:

best stones cover ever!
  5:07pm
Chris from DC:

Cecile, no home should be without First Daze.
  5:08pm
Cecile:

I've heard a lot of it, but I probably should fill that gap, eh?
  5:08pm
Mark in VT:

Thanks Matt. Just also noticed the tag says it is heavy cotton. Funny heavy cotton.
  5:10pm
Matt from Springfield:

Liking this Black Humor, for whatever reason(s).
  5:11pm
Cecile:

YES.
  5:12pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Jailbreak"!
  5:12pm
JMD:

Rockin'!
  5:13pm
Story Line:

Jailbreak ---> Jailbait ---> Jail Sentence
  5:14pm
Paulie M.:

Makes "Band on the Run" look pretty twee, eh?

Add a striped shirt and bits of this "could" be close to Sensational Alex Harvey Band...

liv:

" i vish to be wailin' with van halen"
  5:16pm
Cecile:

Oh, UFO. You and Eddie Trunk and Kirk Hamnet. I dont' get it, but bless your hearts.
  5:17pm
PKNY:

@Cecile - don't use Eddie Trunk as a barometer of good taste
  5:18pm
Cecile:

I'm not. I'm using him as a barometer of UFO mania.
  5:18pm
Mike East:

speaking of curry, I'm thinkin' Indian for dinner. Who's in?
  5:18pm
efd:

Brian, your performance of "Rock Bottom" is still one of my all-time Hoof & Mouth highlights!
  5:18pm
Cecile:

And I enjoy his knowledge, even if I dont' always dig what he likes.
  5:18pm
BT:

That other guy from the Metal show was at the Van Halen show in a GnR recent tour jacket!
  5:19pm
Cecile:

Mike East, it's nachos. For the second time this week. But I made homemade refritos and we have leftovers.
  5:19pm
Cecile:

Which one, BT? The blond Duff look alike or the dorky guy who looks like an escapee from a rap-rock band?
  5:20pm
PKNY:

@Cecile - agreed, Eddie knows a lot, but when he starts talking about how great something like the new Ratt album is...my eyes start to glaze over.
  5:20pm
BT:

Duff Guy
  5:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Mike: I just had Indian last Friday, Goan curry fish.
  5:20pm
Cecile:

Ratt peaked on their first album. Although I have a soft spot for "Slip of the Lip." So sure me.
  5:20pm
BSI:

All it takes is for someone to just mention curry, and my fate is sealed. There's a fine line between "power of suggestion" and "total effing zombie" it would seem.
  5:21pm
Cecile:

I love his voice. It's so tore up.
  5:22pm
Cecile:

Jim, I think his name is.

I had killer Nepalese style lamb and spinach curry on Saturday. Also momos to make you cry.
  5:27pm
das:

Damn, this is killing
  5:27pm
Mike East:

Oh man, never had Indian fish dish. May have to try. I usually go for a chickpea spinach type mush...with rice.
  5:28pm
Cecile:

Mike East, one of my favorites is from Madhur Jaffrey's quick cook book. It's so good.
  5:28pm
JMD:

Shit yeah! You're killing it!
  5:29pm
Ted:

F--k, this Montrose rocks.
  5:29pm
Matt from Springfield:

Rice, fer sure...Goan curry is great, almost always fish, in a coconut and chile sauce. Spinach is a good ingredient in most Indian food (lamb and spinach curry! Sounds great!)
  5:29pm
das:

I feel like I'm 15 again. I mean 1 year old.
  5:30pm
Matt from Springfield:

Sorry Ted, I'm totally diggin' this!
  5:30pm
dinatekno:

Seriously...this is awesome. Thank you for making my crappy work day easier to bear....UFO & Montrose?!?! Wow, I am in heaven. Takes me back to my YOOT!!!
  5:30pm
maxim:

i think he could work on his lyrics a little though
  5:31pm
Ted:

OMG Slade :-) Thanks Brian
  5:34pm
Mike Sin:

There's gotta be somethin' you can pull off of "Call of the Wild" by Ted Nugent/Amboy Dukes to ROKK US EVEN HARDER!
  5:34pm
Matt from Springfield:

Git Doun Widdit!! Hooray 4 Slade!!
  5:34pm
dinatekno:

SLADE?!?!?!? I have to get out my silver platform boots! Brian - do you have any Sweet (Desolation Blvd era - NOT Love is Like Oxygen)?? You are killing me with this amazing set.
  5:35pm
Cecile:

YES. The Sweet!
  5:36pm
Dennis Dragon:

Ballroom Blitz?
  5:36pm
Ted:

this Slade song brings a tear to my eye, I shit you not!
  5:37pm
Led Z:

They ALL ripped US off! Sorry, paid us homage.
  5:38pm
Cecile:

Ha! Ted, it did to me, but in a different way. I had just moved with my family to OZ as a teen, and I was foisted on a friend's daughter's slumber party. We jammed out to the Slade live album, and I thought her friends liked me. But they poured pepper in my sleeping bag while I was in the bathroom putting on my pajamas. GUH. Talk about tears! Ahchoo.
  5:38pm
Bruce F:

And Led, you stole it from Willie Dixon.
  5:39pm
Kansas Joe McCoy:

Say that again, LZ?
  5:39pm
G:

My mid 70s college roommate used to say he enjoyed imagining Zep going back in a time machine and setting up on a huge cliff to play a show at top volume for cavemen. They would totally love it.
  5:40pm
Cecile:

G:. that is the most awesome idle fantasy ever.
  5:40pm
Led Z:

Slade listened to us, not Willie. We ripped off Willie on behalf of the whole 70s rock scene. You're welcome!
  5:41pm
JMD:

Neat! Two-fer-Tuesdays is back again!
  5:41pm
Willie Dixon:

I dig these chicks!
  5:41pm
Ted:

Funny Cecile! I remember reading that Slade Alive was huge down under. Good taste on the Aussi mates. Americans were not as keen at the time. Ever wonder where Kiss stole the title of their live album from!~
  5:41pm
Led Z:

Mud shark, Willie!
  5:42pm
dinatekno:

Some deep tracks Sweet - 'The Six Teens', 'I Wanna Be Committed', 'Into the Night', 'Set Me Free'...so many good one's on the UK and US releases...
  5:42pm
Cecile:

Oh, they loved Slade down there. Slade, the Sweet, Gary Glitter. They totally sent my life in a different direction.
  5:42pm
Willie Dixon:

Alice Cooper baby!
  5:43pm
Otis Rush:

Yeah, some of their songs remind me of....me.
  5:44pm
Paraquat Kelly:

This is taking me back to KLOS, Los Angeles, 1975.
  5:44pm
Willie Dixon:

Don't worry Otis, they'll never get away with it
  5:44pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks Brian, this show RAWKED HAWRD all day!!
  5:45pm

  5:49pm

  5:49pm
Mike East:

Yes, this has been tremendously great. Thank you BT.
  5:50pm
Mark in DC:

Killer. Marvelous and wonderfully un-FMU-like. Diggin it!
  5:51pm
G:

  5:52pm
Pat in Philadelphia:

  5:52pm
dinatekno:

  5:56pm
JMD:

Ditto dinatekno.
  5:57pm
Greg from VA:

I was there when Street recorded this, upfront and stoned, and even though I got through Nam untouched upon the body, that concert left my hearing permanently scared .... yeah, well, what's a man to do?
  6:00pm
Greg from VA:

I meant when Egor recorded street, shoot, maybe more than my hearing got scared!
  10:32pm
BT:

Greg, details on seeing Egor!
  11:01am
