Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Engineered by Ernie Indridat | Welcoming a heavy psychedelic punk breeze from Philadelphia today on the show; the Writhing Squares are a bass and sax-slash-synth duo made up of fellows who have collaborated in such heady combos as Purling Hiss, Ecstatic Vision, and Spacin'. They just issued a new 7" single and have a split cassette out with the band Igneous Eyes. Good times promised! https://thewrithingsquares.bandcamp.com/ | 1:00:44 (Pop‑up) | ||

haa we got called out for 20th Century Schizoid Man rippage while covering Major Stars Syntoptikon at a club recently |
![]() |
Tue. 6/30/15 4:44pm
Cecile:
Lester Bangs accused them of ripping off Mingus, but I never heard it until this live track. Then the influence is there. I wouldn't say ripping off though |
![]() |
![]() Well - just knowing Blues &/or Jazz fairly well was still exceptional then - & later same for Classical w/ Prog & Metal. I wonder what Mingus would've thot? Hendrix reportedly was quite impressed w/ Crimson, as was Townshend, fulsome in praise then. |
![]() |
Tue. 6/30/15 4:50pm
Cecile:
I don't think he was a rock fan at all. |
![]() |
Tue. 6/30/15 4:51pm
Cecile:
Fripp also said he never heard Mingus until after the fact, which is kind of cool. |
![]() |
![]() Yes - but probably not true of the whole band of accomplished players - & he surely heard those influenced by Mingus. A lot of his Giles, Giles & Fripp is pretty clean Jazz guitar... Wiki say: Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 – January 5, 1979) - & he worked w/ Joni - which is not Rock of course... |
![]() |
![]() ...I always wondered about Mingus & Sun Ra ; Irwin say Ra loved Mingus, & noted that other Jazzbos didn't exactly all cred Ra then... |
![]() |
Tue. 6/30/15 4:57pm
Cecile:
I'm sure he did. But he says his exposure to Mingus was one track from his group on a sampler in the 50s, and it was a Teo Macero composition |
