Options Brian Turner: Playlist from March 6, 2012 Options

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

  Tue. 3/6/12 3:34pm Carmichael:

It's about time someone played Ronnie Montrose. Leave it to BT to rock ...
  Tue. 3/6/12 3:34pm kat330:

@Glenn: only heard snippets of each and will give a longer audition later on. As for Karloff: Frankenstein was the first film I recall seeing in a moviehouse, around 4-5 years old.
  Tue. 3/6/12 3:36pm efd:

I won a copy of Paper Money in a drawing at the New England Music Center on Brattle St. in Harvard Square when I was around 14. More Montrose to come tomorrow night, btw.
  Tue. 3/6/12 3:39pm Carmichael:

While in high school, I saw the Guess Who play at a race track. Montrose and Elvin Bishop (and regoinal band Redwing) opened for them. What a great band they wuz.
Tue. 3/6/12 3:40pm Randy in NC:

Blue Horizon.... Now this one brings back memories. I saw him once.

circle can do no wrong.
  Tue. 3/6/12 3:51pm JDELZ:

I ran into DCE at a show the other night and he said his work has blocked WFMU. In case anyone was wondering about his absence!

  Tue. 3/6/12 4:12pm paula pc:

  Tue. 3/6/12 4:13pm SteveL:

I want to hear Loren Green take the mike for Flipper.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:14pm glenn:

lorne greene makes me proud to be canadian. *tears up*
Tue. 3/6/12 4:16pm Chris from DC:

Psyched for Church of Misery at Deathfest this year. You should hear their cover of "Rawhide".
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:19pm glenn:

it's hard to reconcile my loathing of phil's singing with my love of his great drumming.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:21pm Andrew Waterloo:

He's Animal on the drums, but Scooter on the vocals.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:23pm glenn:

  Tue. 3/6/12 4:24pm Cheri Pi:

that's perfect AW!
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:25pm Caryn:

@AW: hah!
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:25pm Carmichael:

I did find the image of the Montrose concert, although its TINY: http://www.angelfire.com/rock3/deliverin/Schmit/redwing1974.htm
Tue. 3/6/12 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

E.G. Daily dammit!! (quaaaaaake)
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:30pm BSI:

Poor misunderstood Scooter.
He probably had a very dark soul.
Tue. 3/6/12 4:33pm Matt from Springfield:

Scooter was certainly listening to death metal on headphones when not working on the Muppet Show. I betcha.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:36pm Carmichael:

The muppet with the dark soul was Beaker. You know he was ready to go postal, being pushed around by the lab professor all day long.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:37pm BSI:

@Matt: Death metal, certainly. But SOMEBODY had to talk Gonzo down from his more extreme chemistry experiments. "too much too much, you took too much..."
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:39pm Caryn:

I'm worried Matt is going to lose it waiting for that Night People show...
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:42pm Cecile:

if we're talking 70s/80s Muppets - in the 70s Scooter probably was listening to the Residents, and in the 80s, the Swans.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:42pm Andrew Waterloo:

Scooter may have been into death metal but his eager to please nature wouldn't have had him singing it anywhere but inside his bedroom when the house was empty.
Tue. 3/6/12 4:45pm Matt from Springfield:

@Caryn: I'm fine, so long as I don't accidentally stumble across voiceover work of E.G. Daily, plunging me into an unexpected anticipation....OH NO I NEED IT SOON!!
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:45pm Cecile:

what is this about E.G. Daily?
Tue. 3/6/12 4:47pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: Sounds like a good evolution of Scooter's taste. Though I also was thinking really hard acid rock into Swedish death metal kind of metal--blar the headphones out and sulk imagery.
Tue. 3/6/12 4:47pm Matt from Springfield:

E.G. Daily is an actress and voiceover artist who's been in a lot of movies and TV, and she's going to be a guest on Night People...the Thu after this, I think.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:48pm Ernie:

Here come those crazy honkers!
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:48pm BSI:

I must see a video of swans' song COWARD with moody-lit face of Scooter puppet-sync'ing the words. Jeezoflip, that would be tremendous.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:52pm Carmichael:

What is this about Night People?
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:53pm Cecile:

I know E.G. Daily - I was just wondering why she had wiggled into the board consciousness. Cool that she's goign to be doing Night People.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:53pm Cecile:

BSI - All you need is a Scooter puppet and you can do it...
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:53pm BSI:

not ashamed to admit, i own a Eurythmics record. It's actually pretty consistently decent.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:54pm Cheri Pi:

Wonder if Connie Plank was banging Annie?
Tue. 3/6/12 4:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile--cool! Didn't know you knew her.

This is very interesting Eurythmics. Now I want to find out more about their really early stuff.
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:59pm PKNY:

Synthpop Mascis = genius!
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:59pm bill:

WTF!!!1! Looking foward to hearing what this drjr is
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:59pm BSI:

also: dave stewart (eurythmics) has some kind of prog pedigree, methinks. I know there's that KHAN record he did with Hillage ... "space shanty" or something. Brain hurts, memory fading...
  Tue. 3/6/12 4:59pm jk:

discogs credits Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox with all the instruments on that In the Garden album, were the germans uncredited?
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:00pm glenn:

i may have to shift my celebrity crush from rene russo to e.g. daily.
Avatar Tue. 3/6/12 5:01pm BT:

Must be, they're pretty prominentaly listed in the breakdown for this. Maybe initially the record company wanted to pull a Bowie and make the Germans session cats....they were more than that.
Tue. 3/6/12 5:01pm Chris from DC:

Well, there was National Health. Is that what you were thinking of re: Dave Stewart?
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:03pm BSI:

Dry & Heavy: i approve of thine record label.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:05pm Cecile:

hahahah, BSI.

Now if J Macsis was really bold, he'd get some house superstar singer like Jes or Chris Willis to sing the songs. Bet they would be hits on Ibiza!
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:06pm jk:

oh duh, everyone is credited on the LP version in the song breakdowns. reading is hard.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:09pm moose:

i had a crush on eg daily from when she was in the 'young turks' video when i was a kid
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:11pm Cecile:

I remember her record album, and her great performance in valley Giirl. And she's Buttercup on the Powerpuff Girls!
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:12pm Andrew Waterloo:

She's also Tommy from Rugrats?
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:14pm Andrew Waterloo:

wow, this is very awesome Thin Lizzy
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:15pm Cecile:

yeah this is from their first record, which is very weird. and quite cool.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:15pm fatty:

this Thin Lizzy song sounds like Saccarine Trust
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:22pm Caryn:

She's also Babe in the second Babe movie...
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:25pm Danne D:

Congratulations, Brian, on a great fundraiser - and thank you for all that you do and have done for this great radio station! Folks can't say that enough to you.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:26pm Mike East:

We tried to watch the second Babe movie last week and my daughter would have no part of it.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:27pm Ben:

Well that Jeff Fuccillo record fucking slayed me. Long live FMU!
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:27pm Ben:

Well that Jeff Fuccillo record fucking slayed me. Long live FMU!
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:27pm Cecile:

Mike East, it's not my favorite, either.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:28pm glenn:

that's enough, pig. that's enough.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:31pm Mark T in VT:

Unpacking the bag from the train trip down to the sinfonia at Maxwell's and pulled out the BT t shirt I was wearing that night. I realized i am listening to BT right now and put the dirty shirt back on.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:33pm Mike East:

speaking of entertaining a 6 year old...does anyone know what games/apps kids like these days? I have to load up my old ipod touch for my kid, but all I know is Angry Birds.
Avatar Tue. 3/6/12 5:36pm BT:

Hey Mark, were you the bearded dude. I saw you on the webcam - I didnt realize that thing was on between sets at Maxwells and people started sending me pics of me sitting behind the drumkit drinking and staring. Very Big Brother
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:39pm Cecile:

Here are some fun ones:
Mega Jump
Mechanic Panic
Ninja Jump
Jetpack Joyride
Cut the Rope
Sleepy Jack
Air Penguin

Some of these might seem complicated to an adult, but having my 5 year old niece kick my ass at Ninja Jump, even if the kid struggles at first, he or she will make up the slack.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:41pm Cecile:

Other fun apps are:
Pickup Stix
Annoying Orange Kitchen Carnage
and Doodle Buddy
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:43pm Cecile:

Oh, and Tap Zoo and the like are cute for kids.
Just do not let them get sucked into the whole "freemium" trap...
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:43pm glenn:

teach her how to play cards. i learned how to play cribbage and euchre when i was 5.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:43pm derp derp:

(Can anyone skip parts of the ustream of the hoof and mouth? I thought this was possible but can't seem to do it, or pause even)
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:44pm Cecile:

Tiny Tower is lots of fun - and it rewards you quickly for a freemium game.
Tue. 3/6/12 5:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Sounds like the Strawberry Fields rhythm remixed.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:46pm Mike East:

@Cecile - Thanks so much!! That is a huge help.

@glenn - I taught her backgammon - but she has a problem losing - we have issues we need to work on.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:46pm Caryn:

@derp derp: that's my issue with ustream too. But usually, individual hoof & mouth performances are eventually loaded onto youtube, so it will be easier to watch single performances then.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:47pm derp derp:

okay thanks Caryn - I tried Internet Explorer (ugh) and it works O_O
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:48pm glenn:

losing's a tough one for kids. not easy for parents either.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:48pm Cecile:

Mike East, also check out the app store. Their recs for kids are good. i've also found some great games by having the Genius look for games for me based on my past downloads. Lots of very playable games from little companies that would fall in the cracks show up in these searches. Just read the comments carefully.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:53pm Mike East:

@glenn - its true. She gets it from her mother. For a while I was letting them both win just cuz its easier, but decided that that doesn't teach a good lesson either.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:53pm Mike East:

Thanks, Cecile, I will.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:54pm Andrew Waterloo:

There are times when it seems to take more talent to lose.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:54pm glenn:

my parents were ruthless. they never let me win anything.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:55pm Cecile:

Some great games for grownups who like whimsy and puzzles are:

World of Ynth
Cover Orange

Sneak 'em on there for yourself!

I am a bit of an iPod game junkie.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:56pm other david:

great show BT
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:57pm Mark T in VT:

@BT yes I was the bearded guy wearing your shirt and I think I have a beer belly right now over the winter.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:57pm Andrew Waterloo:

I found my daughter didn't really hit a real interest in video games till about 7. But it was Nintendo stuff like Mario Kart and Drawn to Life
Tue. 3/6/12 5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

Spooky remix with Decimus--but why would you want a tame version of that spooky role-play narration? ;)

Great show BT!
See everyone later!
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:58pm Cecile:

OH! There is a ridiculously fun Sega race game with Crazy Taxi guy and Sonic and whatnot. It's called Sonic Racing.
  Tue. 3/6/12 5:58pm Andrew Waterloo:

I wish there was more games like First Frights where the second player can drop out and get taken over by the computer.
