Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from October 19, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Listener comments!

  3:04pm
Xavi:

g'afternoon music lovers
  3:11pm
MD:

TODAY WE LIVE A 7" DAY IN A ONES AND ZEROS WORLD!!!!! WFMU IS MY HIGHER POWER!!!
  3:14pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

hey dudes
  3:17pm
Matt from Springfield:

Ah, really spacing out to that "Crash".
  3:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Toyfish? I thought they were singing "dogfish". Tod-fisch (dead fish) would be a good German choice. Great, now I can't stop thinking of the phrase "Toyfish Head Ale"...
  3:24pm
ED_NYC:

WFMU Tuesday lineup is all stars, they could beat the Yankees.
  3:26pm
bennett4senate:

nice placement with this You are So Precious To Me - (Folerio?)
  3:26pm
Matt from Springfield:

What is this Hearts Pursuit, a neurotic cover of Mark Turns?
@ED: Hells yeah! And for less than the price of ONE Yankee! On WFMU we're always "ready for another one"!
  3:27pm
ED_NYC:

I hope he plays the Algebra Suicide single
  3:27pm
NO:

oh Brenda, oh dear...
  3:30pm
bradpeers:

meeuw muzak single are the best singles!
  3:36pm
dc pat:

EVAN JOHNS?! That guy was great... I haven't seen him in a while...
  3:37pm
Matt from Springfield:

DUBS!! Play King Tubby if you got it!
Or at least Sly & Robbie...
  3:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

This sounds like it could be a King Tubby production, this is from '77.

Oh wait, Lee "Scratch" Perry! Just as good! Thanks Brian!
  3:41pm
BT:

Tubs is up!
  3:41pm
BT:

Thanks to Mark Morgan BTW for these dub jams
  3:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

And thanks to you again for playing them! You're the best, Brian!

With Singles Going Steady we've been hearing a slightly different side to all the DJs, I'm enjoying it a lot.
  3:43pm
dc pat:

love singles going steady
  3:44pm
max:

is there any genre of music, where the name of that genre is inserted into song titles more than dub?
  3:45pm
dc pat:

blues?
  3:45pm
Cecile:

Reggae? Funk? Country?
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

"Talkin' Blues"?
"Boogie"? (old school jive and 70s versions)
"Rag"?
"Rock" in the rock 'n roll days?
  3:47pm
max:

touché
  3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

I think Slave Master had that Beau Brummels riff in it.
  3:49pm
DTB:

Polka is pretty common in polka song titles. As a ratio that could win!
  3:49pm
dc pat:

DTB: yeah I think polka is the winner.
  3:49pm
Cecile:

Yes, DTB. That would probably be the winner.
  3:50pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

ve has a weeeeener
  3:51pm
DTB:

I'm currently dancing the Victory Polka.
  3:51pm
dc pat:

oh man, I musta ate about 106 little pretzel nubs. My stomach hurts. Why is work so fekkin boring that I have to eat pretzels? Meaning, even pretzels are more interesting than work....
  3:54pm
dc pat:

in case anyone's interested, Bayern 2, CFR 1 and CFR has scored all 3 goals.
  3:54pm
Cecile:

they are great, but I feel you. Yesterday was Danish day. Yes, please put food next to my desk. It's as sensitive as someone putting a keg by an ex-boozer's office.
  3:55pm
dc pat:

Man! I could use a keg next to my "office."
  3:56pm
DTB:

Can't say I was expecting updates on the Cluj/Bayern game here.
  3:59pm
paul:

i love "break-in" records.
  4:00pm
dc pat:

as I said, bored.
  4:02pm
BSI:

christ, it's taken me over 30 years to get DISCO DUCK outta my head, and then......
  4:03pm
PKNY:

The B-side of that John & Earnest single ("Problems") is banging! Give it a spin if there's time in your set!
  4:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

Gosh darn it, I seem to have missed novelty classic, "Disco Duck". The only other thing I'm aware of by Rick Dees is the Meatballs soundtrack song "Meatballs" (the one that sounds like "be bold").

Say, wonder if anyone at 'FMU has played that somewhat obscure soundtrack LP.
  4:06pm
DTB:

This Kosmonautentraum is pretty special. I can see where AH Kraken got a bit of their style from.
  4:09pm
Matt from Springfield:

Fascinating Kosmonautentraum...I can't find lyrics (or a CD copy) yet, so I'll have to listen carefully in the Archive. (All I caught amidst the screaming was "keine Ruhe" -- no quiet/peace.
  4:12pm
Rodri:

Nice Echo song!
Thanks from Chile!!!!
  4:12pm
NO:

Here's a link to a Kosmonautentraum re-issue download. http://dreamsandvoices.blogspot.com/2009/02/kosmonautentraum-ungehortes-unerhortes.html
  4:12pm
BT:

Yeah, Vinyl on Demand should get on the Kosmonautentraum!
  4:16pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks NO! But what is a .rar, a RealAudio file?
  4:17pm
Jacob:

Hey BT, what's the name of that Lee Hazelwood tribute comp you played 3 or 4 weeks back, i think it was an Ann Margaret track.
  4:17pm
Cecile:

this is way better than Let's Active's version
  4:17pm
Parq:

Oh MAN, do I remember this "Blue Line" -- what a great chorus to sing along to!
  4:17pm
Rodri:

.rar is a compress format like .zip
  4:18pm
BT:

Its actually a new Ace Compilation of Lee projects....called Kalifia: Songs of Lee Hazlewood
  4:18pm
zanila:

wasn't the song before this (blue line) by Les Rallizes Denudes? Is it some of the same members?
  4:18pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Cecile: which came first? I'm loving this version!
@Rodri: Thanks--if I can't get it open on my computer I'll search for freeware that can decompress it.
  4:18pm
Chris from DC:

Is this Outskirts a Let's Active cover or is it the other way round?
  4:18pm
NO:

to expand rar files you need to download this (free) application. http://rarexpander.sourceforge.net/ rar is just a common compression format
once you expand it with the app, it opens as an mp3 file or wahtever.
  4:19pm
bradpeers:

vod (re)did a kosmonautentraum record didn't they? great stuff for sure
  4:20pm
Matt from Springfield:

N, O, now we know!
  4:20pm
dc pat:

3-1, Bayern. Finally a legitimate goal...
  4:20pm
BT:

damn, did they? I gotta keep tabs on that site more...that stuff flies by! If they do, its not in print as on now, I was lookin' this week
  4:20pm
NO:

@bradpeers: say more..
  4:22pm
Derek:

Cool, I used to love this song.. The Great Unwashed original. Thanks, never heard this version
  4:23pm
bradpeers:

2005, jsut a single lp http://www.discogs.com/Kosmonautentraum-Ungeh%C3%B6rtes-Unerh%C3%B6rtes/master/118080

wish they would do more single lps.. that one and taas 1, and a few others very good. Looking forward to this German Wave box upcoming
  4:24pm
DTB:

This is probably the least annoying Rusted Shut song I ever heard (don't get me wrong, I love 'em)
  4:24pm
dc pat:

he saying "Bring out yer dead"?
  4:24pm
NO:

@ bradpeers danke!
  4:24pm
Matt from Springfield:

Brian's Noise!
Was this Rusted Shut on a 7" in any way? Usually you don't find material like this on singles.
  4:25pm
NO:

@bradpeers ah, that's the one i posted a link for.
  4:29pm
bradpeers:

@NO: ha! didn't realize that! also, the other one I was thinking of is actually tass 2 (dunno if there is a connection, probably not, but I remember really liking both those records)
  4:32pm
paul:

nice lock-skip
  4:33pm
Matt from Springfield:

I remember the Fat Boys 900-number from an old video--they actually seem to have quite the discography.

Seriously Brian, about ten more minutes of this skipped groove and it will start to get annoying!
  4:34pm
Unclear on the concept:

This is awfully scratchy -- don't you have the CD?
  4:35pm
Dave:

boy am I glad I chose this exact moment to 'tune in'
  4:40pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Dave: Perfect timing!
@BT: This is a great song now, why haven't I heard of Timmy Thomas before! What other songs of his do you rec?
  4:45pm
Dave:

You think these 7" are scratchy; check out alien mutilations:
http://www.reocities.com/aliengrip/Mutilations/Guarapiranga2-En.htm
  4:47pm
jneilnyc:

Nice to hear the cleaned-out comp, it's been a while!
  4:59pm
victor:

the fall great, the sequence
  5:00pm
bradpeers:

why are they controversial?
  5:03pm
Matt from Springfield:

I know, bradpeers! If anything I want to hire them for parties! Speaking of which, Screamin Mee Mees are also kickin' ass.
  5:06pm
BT:

White Boy: http://www.metafilter.com/94494/So-straight-Im-so-straight
  5:11pm
bradpeers:

ugh.. .. thanks for the link though, BT
  5:15pm
Chris from DC:

Yeah, Wolf!
  5:23pm
Matt from Springfield:

Whoa shit! More old Dio!
I found Diane's RJD tribute to be very informative, as I was unaware of the Prophets and other OLD Dio songs!
  5:28pm
Matt from Springfield:

Slovenia rocks, be it bands or its concert venues!
  5:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

Bee Gees and whatever else is mixed in rocks my world!
  5:42pm
Xavi:

this sounds like Glorium's self-descript: like the warble of a distant radio station fading. ♥ it.
  5:45pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Xavi: I agree. With all the 70s and 80s pop, on scratchy 45s and wavering sound balance, this is probably a lot of listeners' childhoods right here, all mixed together for their convenience.
  5:58pm
Xavi:

great show BT!
  5:58pm
Matt from Springfield:

Thanks especially for all the Dubs!
Singles Going Steady has been excellent so far, you should do singles-based shows even on other weeks as well.
  6:00pm
Parq:

What Matt said. The was a freaking *great* SGS show.
  11:48pm
Ben Dover:

the lathe cut is from "Bring out your Dead" (AA label) ... a different mix i thinks than the one on "Dead"
  4:20pm
sKent:

"Prolifi Kurds"?? Sounds like the Homosexuals to me
