Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from July 20, 2010 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Unrest  Live in the WFMU Studios   Favoriting Engineered by Jason Sigal and David Van Dokkum    Certainly one of the cornerstones of U.S. 90's indie rock, Washington DC's Unrest evolved from schizophrenic postpunk roots into finely crafted, texture-heavy, Brit-reverent, and even experimental pop music. Records like Malcolm X Park and Imperial FFRR earned them a heavy fan base and eventual gravitation onto 4AD records by 1993 after a huge discography of homegrown releases on leader Mark Robinson's Teenbeat record label. They disbanded in 1994, did one reunion show in 2005, and return with the lineup of Robinson, Bridget Cross, and Phil Krauth for a Teenbeat 26th Anniversary tour. Unrest makes a stop by Brian's show for what's sure to be a killer live set. Setlist: So So Sick / Make Out Club / UFO (ESG cover) / Isabel / June / West Coast Love Affair / I Do Believe You Are Blushing / Firecracker / Cherry Cherry. UPDATE: You can now download MP3s of this session via the Free Music Archive.    2:04:39 (Pop-up)

J-Mar:

Saw Unrest play in DC a couple weeks back -- and got to see three different lineups of the band play in the same night. The first lineup (the original high school lineup) hadn't played together since 1986, and the second lineup (Malcolm X Park/KKB) hadn't played together since 1989. Then the Phil-Bridget-Mark lineup. As an unabashed Unrest geek, it was a momentous occasion for me. Versus were also totally awesome.
  5:47pm
sugar:

KISS!!! clearly the best song they have played yet
  5:51pm
J-Mar:

Tim Moran actually performed "Chastity Ballad" at the Unrest show in DC -- wasn't expecting them to pull that one out.
  5:54pm
Mike East:

Great show today! Thanks Brian!

BT:

Thx Mike!

  5:56pm
paul b.:

They also do a cover of "Black Diamond" , There is an earlier mix of "Can't sit still" in existence too. I used to like that one better, Don't know if I still would. Mark was a big Can fan at one point. Thanks, Brian, for playing their version of the Cath Carroll song earlier I really liked that.
  5:57pm
J-Mar:

That earlier version of "Can't Sit Still" is on the Fuck Pussy Galore CD.
  5:58pm
Lou:

So good today! Great stuff even without the Mr. Mom soundtrack
  5:59pm
Barry S.:

My daughter is all tuckered out from rockin' out BT!!!!
  6:00pm
Matt from Springfield:

A splendid time was had by all (mark m's gripe aside). See ya next week Brian!
