Honestly, back in 2008-11 I went months at a time never ever posting as G. I can handle it :) In writing and other things too, I make up rules or constraints now and then to see how they work, and/or for various reasons.

Jeez, were they *trying* to get Mason W to sue them?

[fn] Both puns in my last post derive with adaptation from actual Finnegans Wake diction.

It's still under copyright, and Joyce's grandson is an IP/money nut, so gotta cover myself.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:42pm Alison Porchnik:

Droll, please don't encourage him.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:42pm Roberto:

I hate people too, only exception being anyone who would name an album "I Hate People...No Exceptions!"
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:43pm rrg:

Wow, a SUPER mash-up.
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:43pm pierre:

@G : yes, the Octopuss is not available on my phone.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:43pm G:

Why make exceptions? If you don't hate someone, you just don't know that person well enough yet.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Irwinistan sounds good - but too Muslim
...wouldn't wanna be too stream-of-consciousness or word-playish around Joyce...
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:44pm Robert:

More of a medley than a mash-up.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:45pm G:

@pierre: You wuz rooked. Isn't there an EC regulation out of Bruxelles mandating octopus displayability?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:45pm pacific standard simon:

So true, G. Applies to self-knowledge, as well.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:45pm rrg:

No, it's a mash-up. The keys, cadences, etc., all match up.

Kind of.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:46pm Caryn:

The Lulu reminds me that "To Sir, With Love" was just on tv about a week and a half ago.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:46pm John McCabe:

they don't make songs like this anymore
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:46pm G:

Yes, pss: Except no one, including that odd person in the mirror
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:46pm pacific standard simon:

Plus a medley is a series of tunes, one after the other.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:46pm rrg:

Where, Caryn?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:47pm northguineahills:

What, no Wing version of Superstar?
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:47pm Robert:

They match up pretty well, but the way they're put together makes it sound more like a medley -- probably because the original material fit so easily.
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:48pm jan:

Lulu vs. Zombies vs. Ringo Starr vs. Supremes vs. Beatles (ccc mix) is the ultimate mashup!
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:48pm Flubby:

This song is bringing tears to my eyes. Cards Against Humanity is amazing.
Love you.
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm Robert:

Some of the original material COULD probably have been mashed up tight, with more overlap so less running time.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm rrg:

Leon Russell wrote this song. And sang it.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm Rich in Washington:

oh my god, Irwin!
This is amazing!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm Caryn:

@rrg: here, on our equivalent of PBS, I suppose. Weekend before last. Then, last weekend, it was all music, with documentaries about people from Lemmy to George Martin. This weekend, it'll be a night of Lenny Bruce. Looking forward to it already.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...all similar era - had each other's ears - Beatles & Zombies even both AbbeyRoadStudio2...
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:49pm pierre:

@ G : I beg you pardon ? wuz ?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:51pm Droll:

G, IP, like guns and happiness, are right there in the US Constitution, it's important and people aren't giving it up anytime soon. I think guns and IP are required in Irwinistan.

I like how covers actually interpret a song, a mashup often just plays two songs at once.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:51pm rrg:

"Psychesmellica" is on YouTube:

www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:51pm G:

@pierre: that's jocular phonetic spelling for "was". they usually correct that when teaching English, rather than teaching it :)
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:52pm ChrisB.:

I think Andy Partridge has released more demos than actual records.
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:52pm Robert:

That's right, both at once, not sequentially or alternating unless they alternate very fast.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

OMG Caryn! Can we stream that in the U.S.?? (BBC blocks a lotta stuff for Yanks...)
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:53pm rrg:

Andy Partridge keeps singing "fucking brandy in that big brass cup." That's what I'm hearing.
  Wed. 5/1/13 3:54pm pierre:

@G : ahah ! okay.
well the Octopuss doesn't need Bruxelles,
'm not sure it works the other way around.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:54pm rrg:

Caryn is not in Brit-land. I don't think. But she's familiar with the place. I think.
Wed. 5/1/13 3:55pm david from ks:

Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:56pm Caryn:

@RRN63: Yeah, not the BBC, but hmm, will have to look into it. Live streaming is rare with them, but a lot is available for a few weeks on their archives. Some stuff is not streamed online for copyright reasons, and some is only available domestically. But will find out for next week.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:56pm rrg:

Time for another station ID again. And as usual 91.9 will get all the explicit frequency on-air ID love, and 91.1 will get nothing. It's not fair.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thx, rrg: Was wondering if FinnishTV was dif. from BBC this way.
- Mongoes are excellent! Lassi rules!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 3:59pm Caryn:

Well, Lemmy doc is available on their archives for 26 days more, so I have high hopes the Lenny Bruce stuff will be too.

Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:10pm rrg:

Also, I haven't been able to play it yet, so I may have been premature in claiming that it's not blocked in the US.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:10pm Droll:

If these are the reject drum tracks for the throwdown, I'm really looking forward to hearing that show.

- BBC presumably blocks because they're funded by taxing natives - & I shouldn't be too surprised by same elsewhere...
- I can't even get on Hulu 'til I switch to this Mac @ my feet here...
  Wed. 5/1/13 4:34pm common:

i agree with you, irwin, about phil.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:34pm Caryn:

@RRN63: yeah, I suspect YLE is blocked because a) it's tax-funded, and b) the broadcast deals they have with the programme suppliers allow domestic streaming for a limited time, but not international streaming (copyright issue).
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:36pm Alison Porchnik:

Don't tell Erwin, but Amos has the biggest crush on Beans.

Some BBC vids are blocked on YT for those reasons; BUT, YT (at least a couple years ago) was so stupid and easy to trick--that if you typed in google.co.uk, instead of .com and searched for a Brit-only YT video, it would let you watch it! Satisfied that the UK must be your country of origin!

Ah - lotsa talk - no conversation...intimacy w/out intimacy - my favorite...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:45pm Droll:

Tony Thompson is always written off as some disco drummer, but he did play with Zepplin at Live Aid and was in rehearsals for a new Zep album. Even if nobody else did, the Zep guys though he could replace Bonzo. I sure thought he could, and he sounds great on Madonna and Bowie and CHIC records, too.
  Wed. 5/1/13 4:46pm Ralphine:

Ginger Baker's name on the label is what led me to buy an 8-track tape of Fela Ransome Kuti and the Africa '70 way back in the early '70s.
  Wed. 5/1/13 4:48pm So:

You did it now, mister
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 4:50pm Caryn:

  Wed. 5/1/13 4:53pm jan:

And apparently the music is meh. And for some reason, Snoop seems to be trying to sing in a Jamaican accent. Huh. And has forgotten to change his name on his bling.

Ella Fitzgerald is to Irwin as James Taylor is to Ken Freedman.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:07pm Alison Porchnik:

Beans loves Ella though. I heard she's an icon for gay cats.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:08pm Parq:

. . . as "Putamayo" World Music discs are to Doug Schulkind.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:08pm rrg:

I don't like Soca.

There, I said it.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:08pm Caryn:

I've had a visceral cringe reaction to some performers.

Irwin, I wonder if your subconscious has been somehow traumatised by that Ella Fitzgerald ad where he shattered the glass with her voice? For some reason you fear hearing her will make you shatter...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:09pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- Was it not Hal Wilner who did liner notes to Carl Stalling & called it the 'music of our subconscious'? I love that...
- Wow - this Ella thing!...Lady Day tops for me
- I kinda know what you mean - but you are interesting Irwin...I love how Ella'd jam like a musician w/ guys, & smoke 'em, & they'd love it...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:10pm Alison Porchnik:

I think you're on to something, Caryn. Perhaps it's a sonic permutation of the vagina dentata.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:11pm G:

watch out boy, she'll eat you up, she's a maneater.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:11pm rrg:

Oh, I don't like to even think about that.
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:11pm Otis J. Flywheel:

You don't like Ella Fitz, yet sometimes, you choose to play some of the worst 'music' I've ever had to endure...I'm glad my app lets me switch over to Ichiban so fast.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:12pm rrg:

That's why there's vanilla, and there's chocolate. So we can choose.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:12pm Carmichael:

And strorberry. Don't forget about strorberry.
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:13pm Laura L:

I don't like Poco.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:13pm Droll:

Don't forget the third way: Chocolate Swirlie
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So what are we saying here - Irwin's an opinionated intellectual type? Stop the presses...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& Citrus Mongoberry...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:15pm Matt from Springfield:

The "Third Way" tries to please both flavors, co-opting into a false compromise, and ends up pleasing no one!

Except me. And rrg. And others too, I'm sure.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:15pm G:

Some people want freedom to choose, and other people also to be free to choose anything as long as it's what they themselves would choose. The short term for this phenomenon is "not getting it"
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:16pm Carmichael:

You're not talking about evil Neopolitan, are you Matt? The chocolate section always seems to escape 1st.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:16pm Caryn:

@Alison: and now the vagina dentata issue is making me second-guess the judgment of the people who produced that talking vagina porn movie. Seriously, one concept could subconsciously so easily lead to the other that it would seem like a really bad idea for turning men on.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Devo: Freedom of Choice is what you got. Freedom *from* Choice is what you want...

Choo choo, baby
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:19pm Alison Porchnik:

@Caryn - In moments like this I just ask myself, "what would Freud say?" and I feel more at ease, even if I don't know the answer.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:19pm rrg:

This sounds like that Dave Mason/Cass Elliott album. Which I like a lot.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Bravo RRN63! I myself have quoted that, on Clay's playlist.

@Carm: It always escapes first for Homer S, in fact chocolate's the only one that escapes with him around. But seriously folks, chocolate+vanilla scoop on the same spoon, eat a bit, then continue by scooping up some strawb. My way to begin neapolitan ice cream.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:20pm Droll:

Chocolate... Vanilla... If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:21pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Is it Irwin ...or is it Memorex.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:22pm Matt from Springfield:

And if you're lactose intolerant, well your choices are few and not-so-pleasant.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:23pm fleep:

I don't understand lactose intolerance. Some of my best friends are lactose.
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:23pm Ralphine:

Alison and Caryn: Have you seen the movie "Teeth"?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Damn, now I'm craving ice cream. Good thing I'm about to leave work! See some of you later @7SD, otherwise have a good evening!

What are Ken & Andy going to fail at tonight?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:25pm G:

Inter alia, they will fail at not cancelling the show, most likely :p
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:25pm Irwin:

I hope Ike is listening. He deplores Midlake.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...then again - I know one Jazzbo - & I suspect there are others - who has little time for Vocalists @ all! Mind you - this same Jazzbo doesn't much like bass guitars, either...He's okay w/ Johnny Hartman - he's human, after all...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:26pm rrg:

Sock it to him.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:26pm Carmichael:

This opening was copped from Penelope Houston's Qualities of Mercy.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:26pm Irwin:

I don't actually play music I like. My whole shtick is playing music other people hate.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:27pm Caryn:

@Ralphine: yep. Rather good, actually. And if anyone wants to see the porn, look for "Chatterbox". Sigh...

My timing to go get some ice cream seems to have been most fortuitous.
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:27pm So:

You don't understand lactose intolerance? Don't grow up.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:27pm Matt from Springfield:

If not, Ike will find something else to deplore soon enough :)
Failure at not failing, in a half hour!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:28pm Droll:

Irwin, We know... and AGM counts on it.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:28pm Carmichael:

Ya know, I'm reading Crime and Punishment currently, and this comments board is delving seriously into the whole *choice* thing they discuss.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Green Tea ice cream for me. pls. Coffee - mint chic.chip...I'm uptight like Obama: gimme a spoon....
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:30pm rrg:

This is, well, beautiful.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:30pm G:

@IC: And what's your success metric on that? :)

I don't think anyone's ever played anything on WFMU I actually hated. I used to hate things in my teens. Now I just try to 'get' them -- some times more successfully than others. But if I can't get something, I suppose if I hate anyone it should be me, for lacking sufficient cultural or musical insight...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:31pm Irwin:

thx 2 rrg 4 sw

World Champion Whistler? I hope that's a verifiable claim.

It's a credible claim, though.

It's very 'musical' whistling - not some OlympicsGames GameShow whistling...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:42pm Droll:

Is this a double-A side self-response single?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:42pm Caryn:

I wonder if Geert's lips are insured for some huge amount?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:43pm Sem Chumbo:

What's the premium on losing your embouchure?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:44pm Carmichael:

My friends ask me to describe the music on FMU. I usually end up telling them that I've never heard of most of it, and like most of it.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:45pm G:

@Sem C.: Every listener to this show knows that some companies are going to price that differently.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:45pm Droll:

G, I did not know that. Can you give me an example?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:46pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hey! If yer a musician, it's serious.
Patronizing woman to Segovia:
- 'Is Guitar of the head - or really of the Heart?'
Segovia (Spaniard): 'The feenguhz, Madam, the feenghuz!'
- I'm a David...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:46pm G:

Sure!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:47pm Sem Chumbo:

Yes, actuaries are surprisingly inaccurate in such calculations, it seems.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:48pm Oscar Brand:

Meh. Sea shanties are so 2011.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:48pm rrg:

I'm not a David, but I know some. Oh, and I saw that big marble statue thing in Florence a few weeks ago. That old thing.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:49pm Sem Chumbo:

@rrg: in line long?
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:49pm East David:

Here I am. Listening and enjoying from the east of Germany.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:50pm G:

@rrg: Marble, huh? Yeah, he looked pretty hard when *I* saw him.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:51pm Carmichael:

Von Osterreich, David? Wilkommen zu ... hmmm?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:51pm Parq:

The idea of an effort to "bring back sea chanties" inevitably brings to mind that Bill Murray and Christopher Guest bit for the Lampoon in the 70sk with a late night dee-jay doing a segment with an A&R man "breaking" the latest thing, whaling songs.
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:52pm East David:

Thanks - not Austria, though - but what used to be East Germany.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:53pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'The David' is known for his modest endowment - which some say explains the funny look on his face...Actually, Michelangelo wanted our focus elsewhere, it is said...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:54pm Carmichael:

My German is rusty. How's East Germany - Osten Duetschland? Anyway, howdy.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:55pm Carmichael:

@Parq: I love that sketch: "4 guys. Sweaters. Singing. Like birds!"
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:55pm rrg:

No line for me to see that statue, but that might be because the vacation-planners in my family had arranged a private tour of the museum(s) with a tour-guide person.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:55pm Rich in Washington:

Is this from the compilation album The Night of 1,000 Bands That Sound Like Godspeed?
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Seems to me SeaShanties are relevant FolkMusic - & FolkMusic is relevant to all Peoples & Musics descended from their antecedents. [Furrows brow in seriousness...]
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:56pm Rich in Washington:

Oh great! The office nerd will come running in here thinking I'm listening to Hitchhiker's Guide!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:57pm Ike:

Hey, it's the only good Eagles song! (That I know of.)
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm Wretch:

Rich, I think you just admitted to being the nerd in the office. (I recognized it as that theme, too)
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm East David:

Ostdeutschland had a nice cool spring day today, thanks! Mostly harmless, one could say...
  Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm So:

Fly Eagles Fly, on the road to victory
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm Caryn:

I love the doctors who suggested that the model for the David must have had this or that disease because the hands on the sculpture are oversized. It had to be explained to them that as the David was originally going to be on a building, the hands were made bigger so that they would look normal-sized from the perspective of a person on the street. Simple artists' trick.

And yay, the HGTTG theme!
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm Irwin:

Andy walked in the studio and DID NOT RECOGNIZE THE SONG.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah Rich: Here's an Eagles' tune I have *positive* associations w/ - !
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm rrg:

The tour guide said stuff about whether David's endowment indicated that this was pre-slingshot or post-slingshot. Stuff like that.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 5:58pm Parq:

Whoa, this had an existence apart from"Hitchhiker?" And it's an Eagles song? Damn, learn something new every day.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:00pm rrg:

All right, there's an Eagles album in my future.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:00pm Droll:

Looks like we're all being kicked out of Irwinistan and put on a train to neighboring 7SDistan. Remember, Ken is not a customs officer, he's just trying to score some free drugs.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:00pm Caryn:

@rrg: and here was me thinking it just had to do with the fact that smaller genitalia used to be considered the ideal for men. How times change...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:00pm Nick the Bard:

Journey of the Sorcerer, excelent, yay
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:01pm rrg:

I guess the show is over. Ah, well.

Bye, persons.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:01pm fleep:

And with that, thanks Irwin.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...now I hear DougAddams dialog in that announcer voice about 'The David'...
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:01pm Jeff:

I totally didn't know whose song that was. I only knew it from its association with HGTTG.
Avatar Wed. 5/1/13 6:01pm G:

Andy only know 123 songs enough to recognize them...
