"ft." Mala Rodríguez--i.e., "featuring," as in Prof. Elemental entry?
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:21pm Alison Porchnik:

Irwin sounds so smoove today, doesn't he? Irwin, you sound so smoove!
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:22pm rrg:

Yes, Laura, that's my take on "ft.".

Hey, whattya think, it should be "Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers", not "Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers", right?
Wed. 5/8/13 3:22pm Listening Out There:

He do sound mellifluously mellow. Of course, this is early in the program, o' course...

Wed. 5/8/13 3:23pm Listening Out There:

Ah. And I sound redundantly redundant...
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@LOT/rrg: That's the "Tangerine Rainfall" effect on a DJ..
Wed. 5/8/13 3:24pm Listening Out There:

Oh. It's the End of the World Machine again...
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:24pm rrg:

An unintentional click on the comments page popped up this for me (and now, for you):

Smoove
Smoove is a French company that designs, manufactures and markets products related to bike-sharing. The company produces lightweight bike stands that require virtually no civil engineering and no electricity. The lock is on the bicycle, situated in the fork. It secures the bike in the stations and outside the stations with an auto-winding cable.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...smoove move rrg...
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:27pm Irwin:

LL: I consistentized the "ft."
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:28pm Alison Porchnik:

rrg - what a coincidence. The city just annexed about 50 feet of parking space on my street to install a bike-sharing station. Since I am a fan of bicycling and don't own a car I shouldn't mind, but visiting friends have to park, and parking is already at such a premium here.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:28pm rrg:

Well...okay. At least it's consistent now.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:29pm rrg:

The band name "Peter Bjorn & John" bugs me. That's what they call themselves but there should be some commas in there.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Martin Newell!
  Wed. 5/8/13 3:30pm Laura L:

@rrg, do they ever play on their own as "The Jazz Messengers"? I think even if they do I would keep it lowercase, as it's a definite article that is part of a band title. Thank heavens for the consistentization that just occurred!
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:33pm rrg:

Yeah, I think that just about everyone (except Mr. Bloomberg and a few bikers) is pissed off at the appropriation of already-scarce car parking space for bicycles.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:35pm rrg:

We had this discussion before, Laura, and you more or less agreed with me. This flip-flopping hurts.

I'm sticking with upper-casing the definite (and indefinite) articles in band names for now.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:36pm Michael:

If the bike program there works as ours does in Boston, the bike racks will be gone in the winter and spaces will be back for a while at least. And howdy to Irwin.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Number Stations: become a favorite topic...
- Is there an 'END' key/command on Mac keyboards - ??...
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:39pm rrg:

On full-size keyboards, RRN63, but not on notebook keyboards.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:39pm Matt from Springfield:

@RRN63: Do a search on "number stations" on the WFMU website; several DJs have played portions of numbers stations!
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Besnarked Lakies, in Canada.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:40pm Alison Porchnik:

Laura - what's your feeling about The Bronx vs. the Bronx? Working in T/the Bronx, I have occasion to write borough's name often was taken to task by some Bronxites for not capitalizing the article, which is traditionally how the name was written. So I went back to The Bronx, even though it wasn't being written that way much at Lehman. But recently I've seen so many inconsistencies, and now it seems even some official Bronx websites and signage have made the switch, either intentionally or unofficially. Being a fan of consistency I've switched back. But I'm also a fan of tradition like the serial comma. What would you do?
  Wed. 5/8/13 3:41pm Laura L:

@rrg--I'm being inconsistent, it's awful, isn't it! Must be the dreary weather. I still read "ft." as "feet," and so I want to know how tall S. Jemmett and M. Rodríguez are.
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:42pm rrg:

Yeah, in my own library I usually abbreviate it as "feat." rather than "ft.".
Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...So where is this Key - ?!
...Too MS Words for 'em?

@LL/rrg: But, I always read it as "feet" mentally, whether ft. or feat.
  Wed. 5/8/13 3:46pm Laura L:

@AP, lowercase "the Bronx," unless at the opening of a sentence. Same goes for the Windy City, the Bay Area, the Village, etc.

...I figure Punctuation is *my* bitch - not other way around (to some extent): Close Quotation after a Period weirds me out...I like ' rather than " for Quotes anyhow, unless necessary for other reasons...

Avatar    Wed. 5/8/13 3:50pm Alison Porchnik:

Laura L - how do I explain this to angry Bronxites who insist that because the article is part of the name it should be capitalized (and they have the weight of tradition behind them)? They do have a point. But I like it better with a l/c L.
  Wed. 5/8/13 3:59pm Laura L:

@ AP, well, I guess you don't even try, because Bronxites sound like a stubborn lot! Just let them do what they do--the Live and Let Live policy has to go into effect sometimes.

Too-expensive used book solution needed? ILL it (interlibrary loan/borrowing) and xerox it. Has worked for me since about 1986. That's for if you covet the content, not the object qua object aesthetically or as a collector's item.

The Harry Stein book about Tiny Tim is findable from online book sellers but it's frightfully expensive.

I just have to report that "Powerhouse" gave me goosebumps. I don't remember that piece having done so to me in the past, and I don't know particularly why it did so now, but this rendition must've impressed me, considering I was concentrating on other things. Well done!

Finished the show this morning. Music was wonderful of course but hearing you two just talk was pretty fantastic as well. And coincidentally, reading Uncut and their feature on Jeff Buckley this morning on my train noticed Hal quoted about the concert and sidebar on Nick Hill and the “box set” he has ready to go. Interesting read.
