Richie Havens used unconventional 'open' tuning, I believe
- & fingering; like Hendrix he fingered w/ his long thumb *over* the neck of the guitar - which is pretty uncommon...

I think of in some Rockumentary
- prob. TimeLife's 'History of Rock'nRoll' in the 'Folk' installment
- where Roger McGuinn talks about early days in the Village in the 'basket houses' - where performers passed the basket for their only pay
- & how no one wanted to follow Richie Havens because the audience would always give *him* all the cash...

Hey, it's Richie Havens day! Will you play some of his commercial voice-overs, Irwin?

I've heard about Klaatu - everyone thot an album was The Beatles?
...But I was sure this was Sesame Street/Muppets!...
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 3:54pm Carmichael:

Don't know that one, Irwin. But he did the Folgers coffee thing, cotton (the fabric of our lives), and an Amtrak ad. I'm sure there must be more.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 3:54pm ChrisB.:

Klaatu. What kidders.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 3:55pm Caryn:

Seriously, I thought this was a Sesame Street track! Like Oscar the Grouch or something. WTF, Klaatu?

I wouldn't BE so condescending, if everyone else wasn't so STUPID!!
Now, where did I leave my crayons...

I think it's also the first time I've heard a song about a coat on Irwin's show.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:05pm Irwin:

@rrg: lots of prior airings, esp. before online PLs.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:05pm rrg:

Not so, LL. He's played songs about that Famous Blue Raincoat.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:06pm Irwin:

Laura, your profile photo is the exact same color as the playlist background.
  Wed. 4/24/13 4:06pm Laura L:

I stand corrected! But actually, I am seated. So I sit corrected.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:07pm Irwin:

@rrg & LL: Does My Morning Jacket count?
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:07pm rrg:

I used to like The Roches a lot. I became disenchanted. Not sure why. I don't like the Three Stooges anymore either.

But I'll revisit. I have all their albums.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:08pm rrg:

Not the Stooges' albums...oh, you know what I mean.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:08pm Matt from Springfield:

"No plurality, without necessity".

@Irwin: Now for that to count, Laura would have to be logged in to the FS, with an avatar the exact same solid color as the playlist. In the early weeks of the FS, some commenters were trying to do just that.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:09pm rrg:

I've seen them perform this in concert a lot. It was really long. Just like now.

But it's fine! I like it. Really.
Avatar Wed. 4/24/13 4:09pm Droll:

My Morning Jacket is not a song, only a band name, so no points. This song is long enough for me crank up The Answer Machine again...
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:10pm rrg:

Yes, My Morning Jacket counts. Are you trying to make me do a playlist search for Irwin-played coat and jacket songs? It won't work!
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Some Artists I max out on - prob. possible w/ most any. On a thing called 'LaunchCast' (Pandora precursor??) I Rated Dina Washington highly & just burnt out on her, but I'm over it.
...I even used to max out on The Beatles sometimes - but then they Remasterd them four years ago - & I haven't got over that yet!...
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:11pm rrg:

All right, they don't count, then.
Avatar Wed. 4/24/13 4:11pm Droll:

RRG, With stakes this high, I think a bigger fight should ensue. Try again.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:11pm Carmichael:

But there's never been a song about a windbreaker. I'll bet ya ...
  Wed. 4/24/13 4:12pm Laura L:

Irwin, you can't see me because I don't even know what the FS is. @ rrg, a revisit to The Three Stooges is in order! Get busy!
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if yer gonna have a Manhattan Rumble about it
- we'll hold your Coats...
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:14pm rrg:

Laura, FS is the WFMU Friendship Society. The thing you don't belong to yet. So we could be sure it's really you.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:16pm rrg:

I meant to put a comma there, not a semicolon. And now it's too late!

If only there were someone who could correct that.
Avatar    Wed. 4/24/13 4:16pm Matt from Springfield:

@Carm: Spinal Tap, "Break Like The Wind"?

@rrg: I have several VHSs worth of Three Stooges if you want to get reacquainted with them.
Wed. 4/24/13 4:16pm Listening Out There:

Laura, you and I could continue to be FS holdouts: the outsiders' outsiders. Worth considering! :)

...ahh fleep...always thot there was some part of this I'd missed...
  Wed. 4/24/13 4:29pm Laura L:

I don't mind being an FS holdout--that's probably better proof that it's me than whatever the FS has that I am given to understand would theoretically prove my existence, apparently through a Tonetta endurance test?

Avatar Wed. 4/24/13 4:49pm G:

Yes, totally unchanged as far as I heard, Droll, but I came in in the middle of it. (Sometimes they change something when they drag old ads out again, but not when THEY ARE CHEAP AND DONT GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT PRODUCTION VALUES.)

Caryn: back during High School times I joined the Cricket Club, partly because at the time it seemed like a fun affectation... but also because I thought that maybe if we were all starting fresh with an unfamiliar game, I wouldn't suck as badly at it as I'd gotten accustomed to relative to the baseball-obsessed other kids.

What I learned (and no surprise in retrospect) was that natural athletes are natural athletes, no matter what game they're taking up; and that bookish nerds remain bookish nerds, and are as likely to drop or fear a new type of ball as an old.

Oh, also: if someone invites you to stand at Silly Mid On, beware.
