Thanks, @listener james! You've been there since show #1, I think!

Hey, @UM! Glad to hear it.

@Storkendorfer! Is gut?
Avatar 9:12am Storkendorfer:

Perfectly timed, Uncle Michael! We're fresh outta that Yuletide crap down at the Stork Club. Drafts and shots only! OK, and very dry martinis. And Manhattans. And Sidecars. But none 'o that mulled wine!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

It's Mx. Granny! Hello to you!
Avatar 9:20am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, all. I love these Williams records. They capture the spirit of Christmas AND Ayler perfectly.
Avatar 9:21am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

XmasAyler
...well - yes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Jeff Golick:

'mornin', @Listener Gregory! Yeah, what started off as something of a lark (I'm guessing) has quickly turned into a holiday tradition.
Avatar 9:28am Storkendorfer:

Loving it here in The Church of Alice Coltrane.
  9:29am DJpeterDE:

Good morning everybody! So many musicians salute the creator: are there any jazz musicians who are avowed atheist? Just curious, since so much music draws on the Baptist, Jewish, and Islamic musical traditions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Heya, @DJpeterDE! That's a really interesting question. I have no idea. I suspect there are atheists out there, but it's not much of a musical tradition, is it?
Avatar 9:34am Sem:

Hello, Jeff, and Outies here, there, and everywhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

Wassup, @Sem!
Avatar 9:35am Listener Gregory:

BTW, Jeff, I have to say you don't look a show over 350!
Avatar 9:36am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

An Agnostic Rhapsody
...oh hey I like this other Coltrane too...
  9:36am DJpeterDE:

I'm sure there are non-believers. But I'm also sure that the foundations of jazz harmony and western music generally mean you have to master church music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Jeff Golick:

Aww thanks, @LG. I've been working out. (By which I mean listening to records.)
Avatar 9:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Speaking of Soul, did anyone watch that Disney movie over the weekend? Ethan Iverson went on at length about it in the Nation.

Avatar 9:51am Listener Gregory:

@RevRab, it knows you're driving.
Avatar 9:52am Listener Gregory:

How did this album not become the biggest selling jazz album of the decade??? This is baffling to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Jeff Golick:

It's still pretty weird, despite also being awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

LOVE when Tony Williams breaks out there.
Avatar 9:55am TDK60:

Hi Jeff, al et.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @TDK60!
Avatar 9:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Never have driven !
Yeah this three disc box educated me on a few things... Like the road to BitchesBrew was not so abrupt - that Miles really was into Hendrix & Sgt. Pepper - that Zawinul invented Ambient not Eno...
Avatar 9:55am Listener Gregory:

There was still jazz radio in 1969, but I guess the tracks would have been too long for most stations to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

I think there was a single edit of this, believe it or not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Ah yes: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:00am TDK60:

Listener Gregory, in '69 WRVR still existed, being non-commercial mighta played Silent.
Avatar 10:01am TDK60:

..and was probably also on WKCR and....WFMU, that's the one..
Avatar 10:04am Listener Gregory:

Yes, I'm sure there were stations that played it, but I checked the Grammy winner of that year, and it was Wes Montgomery. I would guess that cuts from his album were played a couple dozen times on a mainstream station, in contrast to these long and abstract tracks. Nonetheless, I believe that if people were exposed to it a couple of times, they would start tapping their foot to Tony Williams and then say, "Hmmm, there's something *to* this record."
Avatar 10:06am hyde:

this version is *almost* as good as the Flamingoes version
Avatar 10:07am TDK60:

..yeh L.G., those stations I noted didn't reach a big part of "the record buying public."
Avatar 10:07am Storkendorfer:

I love the hell outta this L. Bowie version.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Jeff Golick:

Agreed, @hyde.
Avatar 10:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nicely recorded brasses.
Avatar 10:14am Listener Gregory:

I don't care if it's in a garden, or in a crowded avenue. Really, I don't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Jeff Golick:

I swear to god/dog, if you gave any random soul the names on these records and asked them to program a radio show, there is NO WAY it would be a bad show.
  10:16am Mark R:

Jeff, you're really hitting all my sweet spots this A.M.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

(That's my secret for reaching 400 shows.)
Avatar 10:17am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Mx. Granny (e/em):

mesmerized as usual—it wouldn't occur to ME to play all of these titles, so i gotta give YOU props, Jeff!
Avatar 10:19am TDK60:

Is this your show No. 400, Jeff?
Avatar 10:21am Listener Gregory:

I actually think I played that Lester Bowie cut to go to sleep to back in the day.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Mx. Granny (e/em):

what RevRab said!
Avatar 10:31am hyde:

actually, in trying to find out when that Dot show was (i think it was 1979) I saw a clipping of the jazz stuff in Boston that same time. in a one month period there were shows from Bowie, Leroy Jenkins, Anthony Braxton, Ran Blake, Jaki Byard and the World Sax Quartet. Geez.
  10:36am DJpeterDE:

Ornette's tone makes me cry on this tune
Avatar 10:37am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Verily it is good to hear Ornette.
Avatar 10:38am Listener Gregory:

Welcome back, @WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am WR:

Or maybe better way to say is tossing you way out and leaving up to you to find your way between out and back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

I really did not know what to make of this record when I first heard it some 30 years ago. And the same is more or less true now. Though I like it more, now.
Avatar 10:59am Storkendorfer:

Congrats on your milestone, Jeff! 4000 more!
Avatar 11:00am northguineahills:

30 Years ago, I had no idea what a Cecil Taylor was. Glad I got to see him a few times before he passed.
Avatar 11:02am TDK60:

Only got to see C.T. briefly, at O. Coleman's memorial.
Avatar 11:03am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, I am glad to hear you say that (about this album). I thought maybe I was the only one.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

My normal state of being is "comfortably housebound," so I have to give it up to my brother Jeff Jackson for getting me out to see Cecil Taylor every chance we got.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

Comfortably Housebound is a good name for a radio show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

In the year of our trane 2020 it certainly is, @Doug.
