Listener comments!

  9:03am Rock Ridge Chess Club:

Good morning Outsiders.
Avatar 9:03am DJpeterDE:

So the other night I had a dream where it was 8:59am and Stanley Cowell hadn't yet come on the stream, and then Doug's voice came on and said "I'm not sure where Jeff is" and he started spinning his own selections.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am WR:

a few seconds late connecting but seems that I missed Tatas-Matoes. Shopping done. Time for chai & oatmeal. Ah there's the Tatas-Matoes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am Jeff Golick:

Goooood morning and happy new year to you, @Rock Ridge Chess Club, and you, @DJpeterDE, and you, @WR!
Avatar 9:05am TDK60:

Good morning Jeff! I just took down my 2020 calendar, three days into '21. A snapshot of my laggardly life.
  9:05am Doug Schulkind:

@DJpeterDE
No Jeff? That’s a nightmare.
  9:07am listener james from westwood:

Morning and happy 21
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @TDK60! @Doug! @listener james! The millennium can finally have a legal drink, and boy could it use one.
Avatar 9:08am Sem:

Hello, Jeff and Outies everywhere.
Avatar 9:09am Listener Gregory:

HNY.
There, I said it!
Avatar 9:11am hyde:

gooooood morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Uncle Michael:

Happy New Year, everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @Sem!
Someone had to, @Listener Gregory. Thanks, and to you.
@hyde! 'tis good and getting better now that you're here.
Avatar 9:12am Listener Gregory:

At the end of Charles Mingus's disastrous Town Hall concert, the producers told the hall workers to start taking down microphones and music stands while the musicians were still on stage, to avoid paying overtime. The musicians and audience was baffled, and no one knew what to do. Clark Terry started playing "In a Mellow Tone," and the entire band joined in to end the concert on a positive note. (I believe.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

Happy happy happy to you, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar 9:17am Wolfgangadanga:

Who loves Duke and the Rabbitt? Wolfgangadanga, that's bloody who! Daring of me, I know. Slappy Brew Gear, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

Love ya, @Wolfgang!
  9:20am DJpeterDE:

Has anyone heard from Doc?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

I think I saw him pop up during a show or two in the past week, @DJpeterDE...
Avatar 9:23am Wolfgangadanga:

Rich "Inflatable Squirrel Carcass" Hazelton turned me on to that Takase/Mahall rekkid. Clap hands for the Squirrel Boy!
Avatar 9:24am TDK60:

Hi Uncle Michael. Fun show the other day. Thanks.
  9:24am DJpeterDE:

Was it last week that he shared his diagnosis? Wanted to make sure he was recovering!
Avatar 9:25am Wolfgangadanga:

Doc was commenting last Sunday, DJPeter - he reported a false positive on his Covid test, praise Coltrane!
Avatar 9:27am Listener Gregory:

@doctorjazz was on the comments Friday night for Acid Jazz Hands, if that's who you mean. He seemed alive and well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am doctorjazz:

Hi, I'm IN to OUT!
Avatar 9:31am Wolfgangadanga:

YAY!!! Burned yer ears, Doc!!!
Avatar 9:32am Wolfgangadanga:

What an ingenious set, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am doctorjazz:

Hi DJpeterDE, I'm fine, the test was a false positive (had a positive rapid test, then 2 negative PCR tests, which are more accurate but take longer). The worst thing was quarantining in a small bedroom for a week (but I did get room service left outside my door, had it's advantages)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Jeff Golick:

Hooray, @doctorjazz!
  9:36am DJpeterDE:

Is this from “The River”?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Wolfgang! Praise Duke!

Yes, @DJpeterDE!
  9:37am DJpeterDE:

Doc Great news!
Avatar 9:37am hyde:

good news Doc!
Avatar 9:38am Wolfgangadanga:

On the Hemingway: That's Wolter Wierbos on the 'bone, folks! New Dutch discovery for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am doctorjazz:

This Hemingway is lovely! And it was nice to hear James Newton (does he still play? He had a great band work Anthony Davis aside from solo stuff, was all over for a while).
Avatar 9:40am Listener Gregory:

I have so many Halvorson albums, yet this one escaped me. Beautiful piece.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

Does Halverson put out an album a week? (This is gorgeous...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am doctorjazz:

Her approach to solo guitar is a bit like Joe Pass, in that they are basically pick players, not finger style, and use single note runs alternating with well voiced chords. They sound quite different, of course...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am doctorjazz:

New Year, new links to follow to Bandcamp...
Avatar 9:47am Wolfgangadanga:

@Doc: Mary H. Is on Susan Alcorn Quintet's new one (Pedernal) - played by Jeff G. a while back. It is GAW-juss!
Avatar 9:49am Listener Gregory:

Yes, @Wolfgangalongodingdong, that Alcorn album is not quite anything I've ever heard.
Avatar 9:52am Listener Gregory:

Piano tuner demands extra after a Pat Thomas concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am doctorjazz:

I was waiting for Part Thomas, love this album (heard it here, followed the link and got it).
I've seen that Alcorn record on "Best of 2020" lists, haven't gotten it yet. Saw the Halverson group with her in it at the Village Vanguard a few years back. Wotta sound they had!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am doctorjazz:

LG, :-)
Was thinking along similar lines, figured they needed a piano repairman on standby...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

I could enjoy a Sunday's worth of this song.
Avatar 10:00am TDK60:

Jeff, I have to leave early. This New Year Duke idea is great, will look forward to dipping back in via archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Jeff Golick:

Take care and be well, @TDK60!
Avatar 10:01am Wolfgangadanga:

Phew! I'm worn out by the wowiezowie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am doctorjazz:

Smithsonian Records had a great series of 2 record sets, featuring the Ellington band of that era. Don't think they're still in print, though.
Avatar 10:09am Listener Gregory:

As with so many master plans, the execution did not live up to the imagination.
Avatar 10:14am hyde:

yeah, the shoddy materials the creator used at the outset really didn't hold up
Avatar 10:15am Listener Gregory:

He blames the contractor for not following the blueprints exactly. The courts will have to sort it all out.
This Linda Caitlin Smith is nice.
Avatar 10:25am Listener Gregory:

Louth appears to be a small city in England, vaguely near Hull and Sheffield. Good for them to have a Contemporary Music Society!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am listener james from westwood:

Digging the heck out of this Smith.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am listener james from westwood:

Goes well with the snow that's rapidly sticking outside over here in NE NJ.
Avatar 10:33am chresti:

Morning Jeff and d'OUTies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

You're getting snow, @ljfw? Rain here in Brooklyn. Possibly the dread wintry mix. Dog so far not interested in going out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Jeff Golick:

@chresti, the besti! HNY!
Avatar 10:35am chresti:

Happy New Year!
  10:36am DJpeterDE:

@Ljfw, all this time I thought Westwood referred to the neighborhood in Los Angeles
Avatar 10:39am Listener Gregory:

It was slush city in southern VT yesterday, and now it is freezing, leading to... ugh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am listener james from westwood:

@Jeff: Yep! Almost immediately began covering the grass and now it's doing a job on the roadway across from my complex. Big flakes, too!

Also, "wintry mix" has always sounded pleasingly like a mint-themed mix of candies I'd put out in a bowl on poker night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am listener james from westwood:

Also also, I'm guessing COVID has dropped the shithammer on shared bowls of unwrapped candy for a good spell. The Mars family will have to muddle through somehow.
Avatar 10:42am Listener Gregory:

My earlier statements about Louth were completely correct. However, the Louth Contemporary Music Society actually comes from Louth, Ireland, outside of Dundalk, just below Northern Ireland. So, even more kudos to them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am doctorjazz:

LJfW got me out of bed to see if Central Jersey (Westfield) was having the same weather. There's a light dusting of snow on the card and the road here, but none falling now. Not have the show on the stereo, and the coffee brewing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

today's theme appears to be music to make myself cry by
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Sounds really old-timey, those harmonies...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

"Feat. Alasdair Roberts" is an awful fine thing to come across in this universe.
  10:49am Linda Lee:

'morning & happy new year to all! so love the music this morning. thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Yeah. Callahan and Oldham have been releasing a bunch of digital singles with different collaborators; I went straight for the Alasdair Roberts one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Jeff Golick:

Happy new year to you, @Linda Lee! Lovely to see you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am doctorjazz:

Again, I'm ignorant of Alasdair Roberts, someone else to check out, I see...
Avatar 10:56am DJpeterDE:

With apologies to Stork, there's another virtual event happening when D:O ends: Jason Moran got his hands on a radio interview with Herbie Nichols, and Moran is hosting a "listening party" on YouTube
www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:57am northguineahills:

I have an Alasdair Roberts record. I chose poorly, as IMHO, it wasn't his best effort.
Avatar 10:57am Wolfgangadanga:

Dang, I missed that Callahan/Oldham/Roberts thing. Fam damly! Will listen laytah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @northguineahills! How goes?
  11:03am Linda Lee:

how beautiful is this bit o pop right here?
  11:04am Linda Lee:

thanks Jeff!
Avatar 11:05am northguineahills:

Could be better. Trying to figure how to get my stuff out of my repossessed car (should have brought my suitcases into the hotel).
Avatar 11:05am chresti:

Hi LL! Happy New Year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

Some of these album covers are amazing! And disturbing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am doctorjazz:

NGH, man, I thought things had settled a bit...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Oh man -- so sorry to hear that, @ngh!
Avatar 11:11am northguineahills:

Yeah, and I sort of need my car if I'm to make it to my second interview next week.
  11:12am Linda Lee:

Happy New Year Chresti!! :-)
  11:13am Linda Lee:

so sorry to hear it's rough, ngh.
  11:17am Linda Lee:

thankfully these rough patches always end.
always.
Avatar 11:20am northguineahills:

I know that Daniel Carter sound anywhere (played w/ my band dozens of times).
Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

You seem very contemplative today, Jeff. Please share any deep thoughts.
Avatar 11:23am Wolfgangadanga:

Sorry to hear it, ngh. All the best and speedy delivery from your woes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Jeff Golick:

I am contemplative, @LG. If I had any deep thoughts, I'd share 'em.
Avatar 11:25am northguineahills:

thanks, I'm going to have to swallow my pride, and ask my brothers to help me get my stuff back at least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Jeff Golick:

That can be difficult to do, @ngh. Asking for help takes strength.

  11:31am Linda Lee:

is that you, Sir Stork? happy new year! :-)
Avatar 11:32am Listener Gregory:

Sad about Frank Kimbrough. I have a friend who played with him back in college, years ago. We went to see him play in NYC once. I had to tell my friend the news.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

The outpouring of love for Frank Kimbrough FROM OTHER PIANISTS has been something to see.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am doctorjazz:

Saw him as part of the Jazz Composers Collective, Ben Allison's groups, Maria Schneider Orchestra, don't think I saw him in his own groups, but always really liked his playing a whole lot. One of those players who's "got his own"...
Avatar 11:37am northguineahills:

I've pretty much have just been in bed all day since NYE, and coming out to maybe watch something on my laptop (or listen to wfmu). I'm starting to feel better.
Avatar 11:37am Listener Gregory:

Now that you mention it, @doctorj, I must have also heard him as part of other people's groups in the Jazz Composers Collective. They used to have concerts at the New School regularly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am doctorjazz:

Have the LP he put out on the Newvelle label not too long ago, will pull it out.
Avatar 11:39am DJpeterDE:

I like the familiar beds!
Avatar 11:39am DJpeterDE:

Don't change things on us! Not until lockdown is over!
  11:42am Linda Lee:

how great is this rock steady 'pata pata'? a lifetime favorite tune made new! beautiful. :-)
Avatar 11:42am Listener Gregory:

I vote to get rid of Mouse on Mars. Too sleepy. But keep Booker T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am doctorjazz:

Don't change a hair for me, not if you care for me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am WR:

jeff @11:24 curious you write that. I'm finding that it hard to shape thoughts and impressions into comments I'm comfortable with putting into the world, even in this small welcoming corner of the drummer stream. not out of fear of other reactions, out of concern over incomplete and possibly misleading due to fragmentation. There, see what i mean.
Avatar 11:45am northguineahills:

I actually love that MoM's album, so i'd say stay w/ it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

Have to say, the Pata Pata didn't do it for me (?SQ? Maybe too familiar with Makeba?), But love these. Derrick and Patsy tracks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am doctorjazz:

And her other collaborations.
Avatar 11:50am Listener Gregory:

We will all have to agree to disagree about everything. I hope we can find consensus in that.
Avatar 11:52am chresti:

You are calling name with these tunes!
  11:52am Linda Lee:

every new take on a familiar work enriches our sense of the work & biggens one's ears. that's the main thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am doctorjazz:

I somehow un-clickystarred everything I had clickystarred. Didn't know you could do that, not sure what I did, just re-starring the show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am doctorjazz:

(now they're back, mysterious...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Doug Schulkind:

With D:O Radio, clickystarring should be the default.
Avatar 11:56am hyde:

thanks!
