It's the make-up birthday party for Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous's 83rd birthday. A healthy protion of today's show will be devoted to his colorful array of music over the decades. He's an alum of Miles Davis' mid-60's lineup, a Weather Report co-founder, and has appeared with loads of other great ones. Happy birthday (3 weeks ago to the day), Miro!

Scotch for the good doctor. Hell, scotch for the bad doctor, too! Yeah, Ray Anderson tickles my funny (trom)bone.
Avatar 12:22pm Stork:

That looks like a fine read, Jeff. Was just watching Weston playing for and being interviewed with an ageing Max Roach. Really touching.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm redkayak:

Honestly, if more people on this planet heard this music we wouldn't have half as many problems..... Just sayin'...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm doctorjazz:

I'm good, Stork! Turned out to be a false positive (the rapid test does that). a PCR done at the same time came back (4 days later) negative, and, to be sure, I had a 2nd PCR (which also has some false positives and negatives, but it's better than the rapid), which was also negative. But I had to quarantine for a week.
Avatar 12:25pm Stork:

adamdoesit! So glad to see you every week!

A neighbor we have, who's a very sweet woman, but she's a Trumpie (hard to have folks you've known for years who've taken into that rabbit hole). When she heard I had a false positive, she started saying the outbreak is fake news. Changing the subject is the only was to manage this-there's no point in logic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm adamdoesit:

Strange club. No sooner do I sit down than out comes the czech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm doctorjazz:

Spodi, she happens to be very sweet, but she fell into Fox/Trump world. A close friend's mom did the same thing, very difficult for him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm spodiodi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm doctorjazz:

What's interesting about my neighbor, and her husband, who's also in Trump world, is that they don't fit this caricature of the Trump supporter-you know, didn't finish college, underemployed, looking to "stick it" to the "elites". She's a retired teacher, he's a retired scientist (was involved in autism research, lectured). It's just mind boggling...

That's been the story with a lot of the folks in my wife's mid-western hometown: hard-working mid-tier professional people, who raised families and retired with their dogs in their nice homes… with FOX News on all the time. Folks she thought of as decent and kind, which they were, and maybe still are, except for the parts of them that aren't.

Avatar 1:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just reading about Eric Clapton's weird rightwing racist stances - & wondering about people's internal personality conflicts & repressed hates... I think people are screwed up & under pressure - & underneath there's turmoil & resentment & it passes over into bigotry & hate. That this is actually in people - but another part of them understands they can't be upfront about it - or even doesn't want to. When they get people who represent - or cater to this in Power - then they can rally around it - & point to it as validation & as an acceptable standard.... That both individuals - & society are on fact this conflicted & twisted. Yerknow even Hitler loved his dogs - maybe... The Banality of Evil.

Clapton's a right-wingnut? What'd he say?
Avatar 1:26pm Stork:

I notice this Green Line album was recorde on the last September 11th BEFORE the construction of the world Trade Center. From my NJ home, I could watch it slowly rising into the sky throughout that year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:27pm chresti:

Hi WR, we saw ARB and Tropicaza yesterday at the outdoor vintage swap meet. Wasn't crowded, we gave them tamales and Franco bought a record. I wore a WFMU t-shirt...
Avatar 1:27pm johnc:

Clapton? That seems a bit incompatible to a white man playing the blues!

Chresti, it is, we're big on Yoga with Adrienne (doing a 30 day series), and Zumba with The Fitness Marshall here. (I was a Yoga hold out, my wife and daughter have been doing it for a while. Started for back problems, have been doing it every day for the last week. I think I it's helping, even in just the week)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm spodiodi:

driving home on e night in philly, the car in front of me hit a deer and destroyed it's hind legs and pelvis. 2 other deer were with it and waited around for the hurt one, as it dragged it's bag of a body to the curb and tried repeatedly to get over the curb, but just ended up dragging itsel along it's side, further down the street. another car eventually stopped, and it's driver called his brother, and told him to bring his gun (to put it out of it's misery)... but after a couple of more minutes, that driver decided the poor thing couldn't wait, and decided he's drive over it's head
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm chresti:

Thanks doc, good for you!

Yikes! spodi!

coel, chresti, i don't think anyone will be trying to save an adult Buck with a problem that significant (when their flowchart will tell them to kill it)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Hello, Clubbers and lovers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm adamdoesit:

What an awful thing to witness, spodi.
Avatar 2:01pm StringOFperils:

That animal could feed a few people who are really gonna need it right now. But I know that will seem abhorrent....not like driving all over the last postage stamp of habitat the poor thing had, that's perfectly alright. Meh. I saw a doe near a roadside a couple of summers back, with its hind leg on backwards and its perplexed fawn half-concealed nearby. I hate seeing nature disappearing even faster than I am. It's a real drag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm spodiodi:

this is the third injury i've witnessed (all on bucks) -- first was a gimpy leg/hoof (but not as bad, apparently, as this one; second was a big open wound on one's back (near it's hind legs) -- both of those bucks seemed to have either healed or just went off somewhere else
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm spodiodi:

i agree with you SoP (even though i'm a strict vegan for nearly 20 years now)

Once I was riding in a taxi on a highway in Cambodia that tapped a deer-sized animal (can’t remember what it was exactly) at high speed. It was bizarrely inconsequential. The taxi didn’t even get dented. The animal skidded several feet and then got up and ran away, seemingly unharmed. I think I was more shocked than it was.

Hi Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm doctorjazz:

I went to see Shorter with his quarter a few years back, took my wife (I try to pick shows she may like to go to with her. Had 60s Shorter in mind...). The band wasn't "out", in the dissonant sort of way. But they were really abstract-no clear melody statements, no obvious "hooks". She wound up reading a book the whole time (good thing NJPAC is really big, you can do that and not be noticed. She couldn't do the same at the BassDrumBone set, in a small Manhattan museum, with an audience of about 20 people on for up chairs).
