Enroute, on the stream, Destination Out is expected to arrive soon.

Just like waiting for your stop on the subway
Avatar 8:59am Listener Gregory:

Or just like waiting for the train to arrive. It will take you somewhere... but where?

Oh, man!! I played a tune from this album just last Sunday. So sad to hear of his passing this week. Thank you for your eternal beauty, Stanley Cowell!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am doctorjazz:

Odd mix, did he do himself on the right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am doctorjazz:

*dub, bad typo...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Doug Schulkind:

Stanley Cowell graduated from Oberlin about 15 years ahead of my arrival, but his presence was still felt. I feel it to this day. Love him dearly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

I think so, @doc.

@hyde! Late arrivals get the beanbag chairs; sorry, I don't make the rules.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am WR:

Oh. Man. I wanted to slump on a bean bag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am doctorjazz:

Obit for Cowell. I don't get the cause of death, but we'll let it ride. Sad.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am WR:

doctorjazz, I think you should let the autocorrect "typos " stand and leave it to us to interpret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am doctorjazz:

Astral Spirituals is very cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am doctorjazz:

@WR, isn't this shopping time?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Doug Schulkind:

Cowell's daughter, Sunny, is a singer and musician (and lawyer!) living in Baltimore. She performs on one track on one of his LPs as far as I've come across.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

Y'know, @LG...I did think about Christmas music for this show, but then I was in the car for about four hours yesterday and heard more versions of "White Christmas" than I cared to, and here we are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

Cowell's in-person private memorial service will be live-streamed for all to attend at 12pm (ET) on Wednesday, December 23. There will be performances in his honor.

The link given to access the memorial is here: www.torbertfuneral.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Uncle Michael:

Good morning.
Avatar 9:55am Listener Gregory:

Thanks to Sem and doctorjazz! Long may the typos reign.
Avatar 9:55am Listener Gregory:

The Cowell biography is interesting. I guess if you had Art Tatum play on your home piano when you were a child, it would make an impression.
  9:57am Stork:

That was some choice Charles Tolliver on that Live@ Slugs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Jeff Golick:

Hi there, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Jeff Golick:

This Ethan Iverson post remembering Stanley Cowell informed some choices today: ethaniverson.com... -- worth a read.
Avatar 10:01am Listener Gregory:

There is a good Mosaic box set of Clifford Jordan's Strata-East recordings, fyi. Out of print now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

That Mosaic box of Jordan's Strata-East recordings is fantastic. Notable is its inclusion of some previously unreleased material from the drummer Ed Blackwell. Incredible stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am WR:

doctorjazz @935, went shopping early, wife is going out and wants early lunch for her, brunch for me. All groceries sanitized and stowed and brunch on table in a few minutes.
Avatar 10:08am Listener Gregory:

I sanitize my groceries using the hydrochloric acid in my stomach.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am WR:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Marion Brown?! Now my cats will never get fed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Mx. Granny! Sorry, cats!
  10:11am DJpeterDE:

Four for Trane. Three for Shepp. Why didn't Impulse put out Two for Brown?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am doctorjazz:

So, of course I searched for the Mosaic Box, not to many of there, and fairly expensive on eBay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
Email me, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am Mx. Granny (e/em):

holy wow, i might just forget to feed myself, too, this is gorgeous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Artie:

...lowering myself gracefully into the remaining mocha brown velvet beanbag in the corner...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Doug, I will.
Not sure if I should post this, but what the heck. I'm currently in quarantine-I tested positive for COVID-19 this past Friday (so, wear a mask when posting, and stay 6 feet from your screen). I'm actually feeling OK; no fevers, cough or other symptoms. I got tested because quite a few people in my office were testing positive, and 2 people I work fairly closely were positive as well. Holed up in spare bedroom, only leave to use the bathroom across the hall. Just hoping my wife and daughter (who ironically fled Manhattan to avoid exposure) don't pick it up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Oh, damn, @doc. So sorry to hear, and wishing you a speedy recovery.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Mx. Granny (e/em):

hey, doctorjazz, glad you're feeling ok. hope the family stays well.
Avatar 10:20am hyde:

geez, good luck @doc. hope it all works out ok.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Mx. Granny (e/em):

meanwhile, the daughter-of-doctorjazz posts are amusing the folx in my house!
Avatar 10:22am Listener Gregory:

Wow, good luck, @doctorj! Keep up the asymptomaticism.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am doctorjazz:

Thanks, all. @Granny; she really appreciated your following her. Not much out there for an actor to do except try to get noticed on the internets.
So far, the worst aspect of this is boredom. And anxiety. Of course, got miles to go...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Stanley:

Hope all goes well with you doctor j and that you get through this without problems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am doctorjazz:

Get to listen to lots of FMU Drummer Stream...could be worse.
Avatar 10:28am TDK60:

Good luck Docjazz.
Avatar 10:30am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Schizzle docjazz glad you're feeling symptomless. My self-diagnosis is I'm a long hauler who had it mild but hasn't felt the same since ! But I don't even know... There were so many lifestyle changes with isolation !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am doctorjazz:

There are definitely long haul people out there, quite a few, from what I've read. It's the oddest illness ever.
  10:35am DJpeterDE:

@doc take care f yourself!!! Sending good thoughts
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Thanks for all the good wishes-DJpeterDE, your shows have been a regular part of office music, enjoy them very much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Ike:

Hi! Sounds good!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Yay, @Ike! Hiya.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Artie:

Best wishes for a speedy recovery @doctorjazz. Take good care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

PS. Thanks for sharing the news here, @doc. I realize it's an odd forum for that kind of thing, but I'm really glad you felt comfortable doing it, and glad to learn what's up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am doctorjazz:

On a different subject, been listening quite a bit to the Webber-Morris Big Band's "Both are True", (which I heard 1st on FMU, of course, and they were guests on Dave Sewelson's show), highly recommended (I see it on some "Best of" 2020 lists as well).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Jeff Golick:

Oh, @Artie! You slipped so casually into that beanbag chair I forgot to hail you -- welcome!
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

Webber is really up and coming.
Avatar 10:46am hyde:

i like this record
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am chresti:

Morning Jeff and D'OUTies! Was listening while making coffee. Now I'm listening while drinking coffee with steamed chocolate oat milk.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Hang on to your Santa hats...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am doctorjazz:

Thanks. I took a rapid test,; there is actually a (small) possibility of a false positive (I have a more accurate test pending, but I'm probably stuck quarantining however that turns out.)
Avatar 10:57am Listener Gregory:

Here we go! Ho ho ho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

Reminds me of Yes, We Have No Bananas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am zivilars:

relaxing show, thanks Jeff! Have a great sunday everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am chresti:

See you zivilars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @zivilars! You, too!
Avatar 11:00am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes - We Have No Bananas
- a song about Prog lovers who hate the Velvet Underground...
Avatar 11:00am Listener Gregory:

My favorite jazz Xmas album is God Rest Ye Merry Jazzmen (sorry for the sexism!), 1981. It includes a Heath Bros "Our Little Town [of Bethlehem]" that Cowell plays on (including kalimba!). Best is McCoy Tyner's "I'll Be Home for Christmas." He wrings every note out of it. And more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

Cowell was apparently the only non-Heath in that band.
Avatar 11:01am Listener Gregory:

Also Dexter Gordon and Arthur Blythe on that album. I mean, come on!
Avatar 11:02am hyde:

I've been getting Covid tested weekly since the summer (props to my employer for that action) and now I have two plus weeks off with no testing and it seems sort of weird to me. Maybe I'll jam a qtip up my nose on tuesday just to feel normal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am doctorjazz:

Saw The Heath Brothers back in the day, mighty hand!
Avatar 11:02am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, I think Tootie left the drum chair later in the group's history.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am doctorjazz:

Avatar 11:03am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  11:04am DJpeterDE:

@doc I saw that you were following me on Mixcloud! Glad to hear you've been enjoying shows. No new show this week (Xmas) but Tuesday of following week is Joe Lovano's birthday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am doctorjazz:

@hyde, : )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

@LG: Tootie was lazy that way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

There's actually another group called The Heath Brothers, a gospel trio.
Avatar 11:12am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Tender without schmaltz - how fine this is. (It is for Hodges...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am doctorjazz:

Hodges could get a bit schmaltzy...
Avatar 11:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

If he owes a great deal to McCoy Tyner - I have a negative amount of trouble with that...
Avatar 11:16am Listener Gregory:

Not sure Brown's playing is up to that of his supporting cast here.
Avatar 11:16am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just a lovely & capable (best sense) ensemble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
"A bit schmaltzy"! I am now honor-bound to command you to a duel at dawn.
Avatar 11:19am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hm. Well - I like his voice & say no more...
Avatar 11:20am DJpeterDE:

@doug I'll be your second
Avatar 11:20am hyde:

Mmmmmmm, schmaltz
Avatar 11:20am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My favorite Beer to cry in.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

@LG: I hear you, though I also think that recording production doesn't serve Marion Brown well -- and/or it's a bad rip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

"Effi" is a Cowell composition.
Avatar 11:21am hyde:

Not sure how schmaltz ever came to have negative connotations, because that stuff is *delicious*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

My wife has started keeping jars of schmaltz in our freezer, for...whenever, and I'm all for it.
Avatar 11:22am hyde:

@jg it is so good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

My aorta might disagree, but...screw that guy.
Avatar 11:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Schmaltz - Wikipedia
en.wikipedia.org...
Schmaltz is a noun derived from the verb schmelzen, meaning "to melt". The verb can be traced back to the Germanic root "smeltan", which survives in the Modern English verb "to smelt".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am doctorjazz:

Ahhh, schmaltz-Sammy's in Manhattan used to put it on the table to smear on your bread, so good!
Avatar 11:24am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...who smelten it dealten it...
Avatar 11:25am hyde:

@doc yeah, that's the stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

If "schmaltz" mean melt-inducing, then the word fits PERFECTLY for Johnny Hodges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am doctorjazz:

Those Thumbscrew albums are really good!
Avatar 11:27am DJpeterDE:

Just found that Buddy Terry "Awareness" on Bandcamp
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, DJpeterDE. Yeah, someone has been bringing Mainstream LPs back into circulation.
Avatar 11:34am DJpeterDE:

More than on someone it appears? This from "we want sounds" (Paris) but there's also a "Mainstream Records" (Los Angeles)
Avatar 11:37am Stork:

Just awoke from a long winter's nap. I was gonna take a power nap, but power corrupts, they say. I will catch up with the missed Cowell later on.
Avatar 11:38am DJpeterDE:

@Jeff I can get you "Brilliant Circles." There's a on-demand Black Lion CD that is really imbalanced (you can barely hear Tyrone Washington), but I did my best to balance the channels (still doesn't sound great).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

Jazz Got Strange would be a good name for a radio show.
Avatar 11:42am Stork:

Thank, Jeff! I got this one. This way lies the Stork, at the top 'o the hour:
wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:42am DJpeterDE:

Aha! Just looked it up: the Richard Davis that you played was recorded at the same session as another Richard Davis album (in my collection) that also has a track featuring that vocalist (Dolly Hirota), about whom i know nothing, and can find nothing online. Hirota is a Japanese surname, FWIW.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE! I will be in touch...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am doctorjazz:

This BirdSong Ensemble is tempting-digital only, though, usually try not to do that.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Uncle Michael:

Which musician was playing the vuvuzela?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Jeff Golick:

Anyone with an interest in South African jazz would do well to tune into Doug Schulkind's program on the last Friday of the month, as he has a series going with a superb guest that is can't miss radio.
Avatar 11:50am DJpeterDE:

Everybody is preparing the piano these days! I'm not hating it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am doctorjazz:

These South African tracks are killer! (don't sound like Abdullah Ibrahim, though, guess he hasn't had "coattails", as they say in politics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

@UM: I do not know the answer to that question!
