Evening, Mark and all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Webhamster Henry:

Sheesh! I just spent an hour and a half waiting for a tech consultant from Spectrum who was super clueless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm ultradamno:

I've noticed the phrase 'you tube star' is never attached to anything good.
Avatar 6:01pm TDK60:

Hi Mark, haven't been here in a while..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi Mark! Techtonicwalkies! Listening whilst on the move.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm ultradamno:

No one write a parody song called that! It would never go away! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm Handy Haversack:

Helicopter, helicopter, paying your bills.

A bit of a side issue, but does anyone know who enabled/authorized the Google LinkNYC spy towers to display the names of those murdered by cops lately? A pacifying maneuver from the city? A hack?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm queems:

hello mark & all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm mariano:

Wouldn't it be grand if everyone who participated in the demonstrations boycotted FB till Suckerberg took his lips off of Trump's ass?

Mariano, wouldn't it be a thing?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, queems. How did your work day go? Minimal stress, I hope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm ultradamno:

Kind of like the major sports teams I heard posted black squares.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Mark Hurst:

(actually April was his most recent appearance, sorry, not Feb)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:08pm Megaroni:

All talk and no action from big tech, who cares that they claim to say BLM? What have they done to show it? Thanks Techtonic!
Avatar 6:08pm craplivion:

hey mark.allways loved your shows.i had to stop watching the cops show back in the day.i looked at it as a profiteering show on class and racial wars.i started thinking of how much money the cops show made on the advertising chemercials must have made.must have been crazy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm queems:

@handy howdy! @kfhp it was uneventful! thanks for asking! i will say that even though we're all wearing masks, social distancing of 6 feet is pretty much impossible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Corey:

Hello Mark and everybody! Glad to be able to tune in today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm Mark Hurst:

Hi Megaroni, craplivion, Corey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Handy Haversack:

queems, if you need a respite at any point, we have a back yard in Greenpoint where you can be 7+' away, sit in the sun (or shade), have a beverage, and recoup before the drive back to NJ. Just say the word, and hospitality is yours!

Hey, Corey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Webhamster Henry:

You say "All Things Considered", I say "Weakened Edition".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Mark Hurst:

@craplivion good point - I believe the Cops TV show is discussed in "Thin Blue Lie" by Matt Stroud, see July 2019 episode www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 6:11pm sbw:

Hi from Venice, California!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Mark Hurst:

Hi sbw, thanks for joining
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm queems:

@handy that's so nice of you!!! thank you! i'll definitely let you know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Handy Haversack:

"Black-power washing": hell yeah. Tell it. So sick of vague statements of solidarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm WR:

Great that Fast Company is shining some light on duplicity of big tech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy see the statement from [BRAND] in the playlist (image)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm melinda:

Hi friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Mark Hurst:

Hi melinda, welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm ultradamno:

I'm a little surprised one of these companies haven't come up with something called Antifinder to help the white house track down 'terrorists'.
Avatar 6:15pm TDK60:

They insulted him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Mark Hurst:

@WR agree
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Corey:

Hey Handy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm Handy Haversack:

I think I've seen it a hundred times, Mark -- and I don't even use social media!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm queems:

oh i read an article on gothamist about this gentleman!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy me too - I really appreciate those sentiments from [BRAND]
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm WR:

Oh yeah, equal opportunity smearing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm melinda:

Just say no to Ring.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm Handy Haversack:

I have redoubled my commitment to the [BRAND] lifestyle. In these ongoing troubled times, we all need it more than ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:18pm Mark Hurst:

...because we care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm ultradamno:

I don't want any technology named after a movie/novel about a vengeful ghost using technology as a conduit to commit murder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm melinda:

Next Door is good for home repair recommendations.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm melinda:

@ultra-d me neither
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Handy Haversack:

"Sure, you know, you could have a regular doorbell. I'm sure *some* people have them without being murdered by people from outside the neighborhood. But I'm a cop, and I have seen a lot of stuff ..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy "be a real shame if you weren't cooperative with your local PD"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Webhamster Henry:

How about that creepy Facebook Portal that has motors to look around in a room .. or wherever else it's mounted.
  6:22pm P-90:

“porch pirates” what a playful, Disney-fied nickname for package thieves... apparently we’re all living in Amazon’s theme park of the mind, it’s all just a big computer game
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Handy Haversack:

"It's just, you know, we have to prioritize resources, what with these budget cuts, so you just never know ... But it's your family!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm queems:

next door is a really good place to write racist shit about people in your neighborhood
  6:22pm Sam:

Does the algorithm actually call the police on dark skinned people? I find that hard to believe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm queems:

source: every next door post i've ever seen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Webhamster Henry:

This kind of even harks back the the phrase "Untouched by Human Hands" referring to manufacturing white bread. slate.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Handy Haversack:

"Some of them are using free internet to deal drugs!" -- Nextdoor.
  6:24pm David in London:

I’m promoting KnockR, my new front door innovation. A large metal ring with a brass knocker on it. All venture capital welcome...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm listener james from westwood:

Mark, this is still in production, but you might want to put "Predict and Surveil: Data, Discretion, and the Future of Policing" by Sarah Brayne (Oxford Univ Press) on your radar. She studied the LAPD's and other forces' adoption of technology like Palantir and other predictive, surveillance, and data-harvesting tools, including interviewing cops and civilian LAPD workers, and went on ride-alongs. Scary stuff that all seems Techtonic adjacent. (Due disclosure: I'm proofreading it at the moment.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm Handy Haversack:

David, do you accept spork money?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm melinda:

@queems that sucks. My Next Door group is pretty good, the biggest controversies are about unleashed dogs (with no racial overtones).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Mark Hurst:

@James great idea, would be happy to take a look - hit me off-list with an agent/publisher if you know them
Avatar 6:26pm craplivion:

sam.im having alot of trouble believing in what im whitnessing in the past few years.and it so relates to 1981 orwell and alexhuxley brave new world combinned inro a one
  6:26pm David in London:

Handy, yes indeed. Your business nous and early investment are both very welcome.
  6:26pm GC in South Slope:

Awesome conversation. So extremely important!
I suggest you distill the key points into some memes or sentences, then start sharing on Tw and FB.....guaranteed they will be shared widely and virally.
Now is a fertile time for folks to be making the connections between racism and exploitation and inequality and complicity of the tech monopolies etcetera.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Handy Haversack:

@james: One UP worker to another: nice one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm Mark Hurst:

@melinda I think it's akin to the conversation about Facebook. there do exist some benign groups, but the underlying business model (in ND's case, to become the mediator w/local gov't) is toxic and dangerous to civil society.
  6:27pm Dave Miss:

Howdy all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Mark Hurst:

Hi Dave, hi GC in SS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm WR:

I think Dr Gilliard just coined a phrase, Avoid Amazon. LOL. Guess the alliteration is too tempting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm Webhamster Henry:

Can you hack the Ring's DNS so it goes to your own server ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm melinda:

@Mark I get it. It feels less manipulative than social media platforms to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29pm Webhamster Henry:

One way you can Avoid Amazon, Get offa Google, etc, it to stick their domain names in your host file to route to 127.0.0.1
Avatar 6:30pm craplivion:

1984 .sorryfor the the misstype.im typing in the dark.and im typing challenged with typing with one finger.im no trained typer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm WR:

There are many alternatives to Ring. They are not tech innovators, just implementors and marketers and opportunists. The electronics are available widely and can be set up to call you etc without being in their cloud and community control.
  6:31pm JJ NY-SC:

I'm on NextDoor for my neighborhood because I WANT to know what my neighbors and the police are saying/doing, thinking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:31pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I like that idea, WHH. Is there a Wikihow or other website that shows the method to do that?
  6:32pm Mr. Palchepo.:

There’s also an element of hyper competitiveness in regards to the Central Park woman. She needed to win the confrontation so badly she was willing to use racism to get her way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm WR:

I too find it of interest to be in NextDoor, but I am in a predominantly brown neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm listener james from westwood:

@Mark: Email sent via the FMU email contact form!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm Mark Hurst:

@James thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm ultradamno:

Like boycotting oil companies?
  6:35pm Sam:

It’s easy to boycott Amazon. I haven’t bought anything from them in many years. Google is tougher I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm melinda:

So true, we are encouraged to think of ourselves as consumers rather than citizens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm brainiac:

@melinda: word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:37pm olivia:

Dark matters is a great book. Highly recommend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm coelacanth∅:

right. there's almost never a reason to support scamazon. they're generally more expensive than ebay so saving money isn't an excuse...
convenience?
i don't think there's any reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Mark Hurst:

@olivia thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm Mark Hurst:

@coel agree. for books, go to bookshop.org
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm coelacanth∅:

yes, or thriftbooks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm Mark Hurst:

@coel good pointer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Handy Haversack:

Or order direct from the publisher, who often give discounts for direct orders. If you don't have a local bookstore that will order for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy yes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Handy Haversack:

LOVED this interview, Mark. Thanks. Thanks. This is so important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm Mark Hurst:

@Handy thanks, sir
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm listener 126464:

Thanks Mark. Thanks Chris. Delete Facebook. Boycott Amazon.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Mark Hurst:

@listener126464 @P-90 thank you both
  6:43pm ignatatus666:

I find it difficult to believe that FB promotes White groups. Mark Zs filters are ludicrous. I called Honey Boo Boos mother straight white trash when she was busted with crack, heroin and drug paraphernalia. I was banned for 30 days.

@igna please read any of the sources I mentioned in the intro

I wish I could prove my NYC residency again, so, I could stream movies from the New York Public Library (but alas, I don't want to pay New York State taxes anymore [part of the reason I'm getting an economic divorce])

@ngh unfortunately I think NYPL ended its partnership with Kanopy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm ultradamno:

What We Do In The Shadows is the one big one I look forward to now. Staten Island vampires!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm chris:

great interview, great recommendations. thanks to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Handy Haversack:

(I thought it was at least partly because Kanopy wasn't up to library privacy standards.)

Kate also says: Atlanta! Watch Atlanta!

And no worries, Mark.

@chris thanks!

That British Baking Thing is what my family has been watching together lately. Good choice, Mark.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm Mark Hurst:

I have to find it, I can send it to you, he basically said it was about the same or less then driving to a red box kiosk.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Webhamster Henry:

@dale yea, Criterion's print was found in a closet in a Norwegian asylum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm ultradamno:

What I liked on the girl scout cookie one is they would always have a public sale challenge and all the judges would try the offerings at the table in front of the cook and say really complementary things and then immediately sidebar and start tearing the treats down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Ike:

There's a peculiar, expensive-looking Korean historical thriller on Netflix called Kingdom. It's about the royal line of succession (with amazing costumes), starvation, and a pandemic... that turns people into zombies. So I guess it's a mash-up?
  6:56pm David in London:

Handy, right, gotcha.
Avatar 6:56pm dale:

pandora's box with louise brooks is mind blowing.
  6:56pm P-90:

I’d be very interested to hear more, I’m a little skeptical that a single user streaming a single item on Netflix (or whatever) actually has a disturbingly huge carbon footprint...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Folsom:

@mark found the show www.bbc.co.uk...
