Today: On Elon Musk's Twitter takeover – with Paul Bradley Carr, author, 1414º

Paul Bradley Carr's newsletter

Paul Bradley Carr on Techtonic (Nov 15, 2021) talking about his novel 1414º

Twitter: to the loon! (by Paul Bradley Carr, April 7, 2022): “I’m out. I hard-deleted my verified account on Tuesday morning and also the 2FA so I can’t reactivate it during the grace period even if I wanted to. I’m a recovering addict, and I know when something is dangerously unhealthy. ... How was it? Well, it took me a full six hours to hear about the Will Smith Oscar slap vs six seconds for everyone else. I had to wait until 6am every morning to find out the latest covid rates or the death toll in Ukraine. For this terrible sacrifice of immediacy, I regained HOURS of my day.”

Elon and on (by Paul Bradley Carr, April 13, 2022): “This is a man who has made a career out of promising the earth (/Mars/the hyperloop/cave rescue pods/robot trucks) and then not quite delivering.”

• From McSweeney's, I like free speech so much I decided to buy it (by Eli Grober, Apr 26, 2022): “Hi there, I’m Elon Musk. I’m mostly known for rockets and cars, but what I really care about is free speech. I can’t get enough of it. In fact, I like free speech so much I’ve decided to buy it. That’s right, it turns out free speech isn’t free—it costs exactly $44 billion. That might sound like too much money for one person to be allowed to spend, but that’s only because it is. And I’ve decided free speech is worth the cost. I’m going to make sure some board full of rich guys doesn’t get to define what counts as free speech. Instead, just one rich guy will get to decide what counts as free speech: me.”

• Jack Dorsey weighs in on Elon Musk: “I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness.” (Dorsey also linked to a Radiohead song.)

• Why NYT Book Review editor Pamela Paul left Twitter (Apr 28, 2022): “I left because I was terrible on Twitter. I may not have been the only one, but Twitter Me was petty, insecure, desperate to please, angry, narcissistic and needy.”

• Robin Sloan describes getting off Twitter: “The speed with which Twitter recedes in your mind will shock you. Like a demon from a folktale, the kind that only gains power when you invite it into your home, the platform melts like mist when that invitation is rescinded.”

• Charles M. Blow on his Twitter experience (May 1, 2022): “There were clear positives. But the negatives were real and grinding. Social media is full of hate speech, bots, vitriol, attack armies, screamers and people who live for the opportunity to be angry.”

• Edward Ongweso Jr pointing out in Vice that billionaires already own all of the media and platforms: “The world’s richest man will soon own Twitter. The second-richest man (Jeff Bezos) owns the Washington Post. ... Two of the 10 richest men (Larry Page and Sergey Brin) own Google. Mark Zuckerberg, one of the richest 20 men in the world, owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. ... There are, of course, alternatives we should aspire to, and they don’t include billionaires. ... there are an abundance of proposed models (public utilities, cooperatives, protocols, etc.) but that our options, at the moment, are limited to ‘broaden[ing] our conversations about how platforms should be designed, financed, and governed.’”

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:05pm joe mulligan:

i think Musk wants favor of politicians who will bring forth less regulation in manufacturing batteries in the US. Those are republicans who need a voice (Twitter) and will drop environmental restrictions for us growth
Lots of batteries lots of jobs lots of us manufacturing
Republicans in office and ruining the planet
He doesn’t care he’ll say let’s go to mars

Webhamster - shhh! Don't give him any ideas!
  6:06pm Kathy:

Good evening all! My husband & I love Techonic and have been waiting for tonight’s Twitter show! Is it OK to ask an off topic question here? My husband recently got locked out of his Yahoo email account and can’t get back in because he doesn’t have his cellphone anymore. (We both work from home in a rural area with spotty cell service at best so he had ditched his cell a few years ago.) But it’s getting to be that having a cellphone seems mandatory for things! Yahoo customer service has been a nightmare but we’re still hoping he can at least get back on to retrieve some important info. But can anyone here recommend a good (and free?) email service to start up again with? I know Google is out! What do you guys use?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm Webhamster Henry:

"Free speech" libertarians are always revealed as being just like all the other libertarians -- the important freedoms are the ones they have been handed that others' haven't. The freedom to be the loudest, most amplified by privilege must not be risked. Because WHO KNOWS what lesser people might say if given the chance.

I do scroll through twitter as a newsfeed and a sampler of people's thinking and agendas -- never post myself. It's the most antisocial of the major antisocial media sites. I thought it was figured out, P-90. You make algorithmic amplification illegal, you enforce monopoly laws, and you force "platforms" to acknowledge their responsibility as publishers to not spread hate, falsehood, and lies for profit. Both bada and bing.

@Franco Twinkle - seasoned users can enjoy it, as they see past lots of the noise and bot/automated trash, but whenever I show a post to a non-Online person, they start reading the replies aloud and I seize back the phone, so it's awful for those who aren't recognizing the noise
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm chris in the redwoods:

what Handy and Mark bada binged and zing zoomed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm _Ike_:

@Dean@6:26, one of the whole points of Techtonic is that it doesn't matter if *you're* on Twitter or other social media driven by algorithmic promotion of hate, conflict, and polarization for profit -- what matters is that *society as a whole* is participating in it and being driven by these algorithms.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Handy Haversack:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm PaulRobeson1922:

@Handy @6:33 Yes. These platforms have to be regulated as publishers!!!!

  6:36pm P-90:

See? Critics like Carr start to veer close to the solution, than veer off again without getting it. He just did it, so did Mark. They always do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm YETI BOB:

As much as we need to keep encouraging people to get off social media, there have to be regulatory changes as well. It's like plastic recycling - it's good that we do it, but we need to reduce the amount of plastic that is produced in the first place. The burden has to be shifted from end-users to producers, or we'll never see the necessary changes happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm _Ike_:

(Or at least that's my interpretation. Not that participating in it yourself can't make things worse for your own brain in particular, but refusing it won't save society as a whole.)
  6:37pm Rolando:

As far as I know Mastodon has a linear timeline.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:37pm Handy Haversack:

twitter was pretty wonderful in 2006, it was a social media hug-fest till maybe 2009
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm DanFA:

Has anyone on here used Discord? It's a chat room-based social media site like the comment section where you have to be invited to join it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Webhamster Henry:

Is someone going to unroll this chat after the show?
  6:46pm P-90:

Did Carr mention “Twitter before Musk took over”? Who said he’s already “taken over”.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm joe mulligan:

DanFA I've used Dischord for chats during indoor virtual bike riding on Zwift. it's nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:46pm ultradamno:

I might quite twitter if I get called "sheeple" too many times in a week, that's my threshhold. I can usually ignore seeing Bill Maher, James Woods, Joe Rogan, Piers Morgan etc trending at all times. It's just a matter of not taking the bait too much.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:46pm Franco Twinkie:

Checking my game stops at looking at my teeth in the mirror before I leave the house.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:47pm Handy Haversack:

Discord is ... well, imbricate in the same Silicon Valley VC world as all the others, DanFA. It seems like a terrible method of communication, but then I think all social media seems like a mere pretense of communication. I use it just for in-game chat and record keeping for our D&D game since we went remote for the pandemic.

Sheila took the leap. She’s a pioneer.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:48pm Handy Haversack:

SheilaB is a hero! Mad respect!
  6:48pm Rolando:

Paul Bradley makes a lot of sense 👍 Thank you. Now we need to talk about alternatives to Twitter, and ways of approaching this problem in order to allow FreeSpeech.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm ultradamno:

So it could be a "dog catches car" situation...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:49pm joe mulligan:

good points Handy! there's also Twitch which has been used for gamers but has been used by musicians and dj's for live stream concerts during pandemic lockdown
Avatar 🤖 6:49pm MarciB:

Three cheers for @SheliaB! And this playlist is so full of gems - just signed up for PBC's newsletter.
  6:49pm Quinn02:

I ditched Facebook. Don’t regret it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm DanFA:

@Handy- some podcasts I listen to have Discord servers and I've been able interact with other fans and the people who run those shows. So far I've had a good experience.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm ultradamno:

Never having Facebooked, Instagrammed or What'sapped IS something I can brag...
  6:51pm P-90:

You guys are talking about Twitter as if Elon has already had some influence on Twitter’s daily operations. I don’t think he has? Isn’t that just an anxious (and slightly silly) assumption?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm solo mon:

This CVS receipt length comment board.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Franco Twinkie:

Alternatives ultimately create a new raft of problems. Talk to people in the park and go to parties. It's enough, believe me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm ultradamno:

(not cause I'm above it, mind you, I just found Facebook's format ugly and dumb)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm joe mulligan:

I've stopped using twitter for years, logged in much less to facebook but cant quit so I have a "no post/no like/no comment" rule for myself
but I can't quit instagram - yet
  6:51pm Dean:

Glenn Greenwald has been hammering away at this fact, the routine ownership of social/news media by insanely wealthy people. I can only agree with him in this respect.
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Handy Haversack:

I tried for a while to participate in some maker communities there, DanFA, but eventually found it ... empty? Either empty or overloaded, I guess. And the channel format seemed just to make it impossible to organize conversations. But I have no real drive for communication outside pretty much what Franco just said. So I use it for some record keeping, and it's OK for that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm ultradamno:

(and Insta just seemed like knockoff Flicker and I'm still not sure what What's App is)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm DanFA:

@Handy yeah, I pretty much agree with that. None of these social media platforms are perfect for social interaction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm joe mulligan:

I've been using two main platforms instead of social media
1) Slack for my bike people (a work collaboration tool that can be used for a closed group in a social way)
2) wfmu comments board
  6:54pm P-90:

Elon’s blind spot is that he really has no idea how rapidly Twitter will become obsolete. He thinks he’ll be able to “innovate” his way out of that obsolescence. He’s overly confident about that. Blinded by his narcissistic character.

I'm kidding of course Handy. But typing culture is like eating sugar - taste good, but empty is so many ways.
Avatar 6:55pm Jeff Moore:

My absolute favorite social network was Google+.

No, not joking (even though a bunch of jerks made fun of it throughout its all too brief existence).

It was a beautiful place for long-form, nuanced conversations with remarkable belly-up-to-the-bar access to legendary tech figures.

Hey folks. Great show, Mark. Have said this before, we don’t have democracy in this country. It’s Inverted Totalitarianism (www.truthdig.com...)
  6:55pm Dean:

I also think our reception of toxic discourse these days is blinkered. I spent part of today poring over issues of a student newspaper from the early '80s. The vitriol was boundless. Technology or not, we haven't changed that much.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Webhamster Henry:

“Inverted totalitarianism is different from classical forms of totalitarianism. It does not find its expression in a demagogue or charismatic leader but in the faceless anonymity of the corporate state. Our inverted totalitarianism pays outward fealty to the facade of electoral politics, the Constitution, civil liberties, freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary, and the iconography, traditions and language of American patriotism, but it has effectively seized all of the mechanisms of power to render the citizenry impotent.”
Avatar 🤖 Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Handy Haversack:

Mad respect, Mark Hurst. Mad respect.

Word, Zinn!

And Jeff Moore, that's where all the DIY D&D stuff was happening. It's the only SM platform I ever used, and I even kind of miss it. It was really useful for the maker community. But also: Google.
