Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

"What Is Life" really *is* "The Best Of" his stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm coelacanth∅:

i don't agree with that! but i can say that when i was little and one of my older siblings brought home this 45 -and the flip was up there with the a side, i knew i'd get the album soon, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm coelacanth∅:

...one of the first albums i ever bought. $5.00 from the rca record club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:21pm Parq:

Coal, the RCA was responsible for most of the records I acquired in my high school years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm coelacanth∅:

nice Parq! they were great! when i joined up even at the age of ...8? i knew the scams; but rca gave me 3 albums for $5. with no further obligations. by the time i was 12 i had as many albums as my older brother, just from leaf-raking money.

  12:25pm dan:

Hey UM. You should have done an all No. 5 show. All the songs have "five" in the title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm coelacanth∅:

(or all the songs that reached #5)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Uncle Michael:

dan, you have a great idea there for your fifth anniversary show.

Thank you Jeff. It's only going to take me five more years to sound this good!
  12:31pm own crabapplesatellite Johnzon:

The one and only... as far as I know... because I've intentionally avoided googling it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm coelacanth∅:

i just remembered that my brother's my sweet lord 45 was backed with "isn't it a pity", not "what is life".
my brother got the what is life single (a-side, b/w "bangla desh") later on, after i got the album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Parq:

Speaking of not bothering to google, what was the name of the singer on this JA album? Singe something?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

Signe Ansderson
Avatar 12:35pm Roberto:

This sounds like Mott the Dylan.
  12:36pm own crabapplesatellite Johnzon:

I love that album(all things must pass) apparently what Phil Spookter was blown away with how many songs GH had stashed away because P&J didn't want them
  12:36pm own crabapplesatellite Johnzon:

My favorite track is Wawa... Wah Wah?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Ian Hunter was always sounding like Bob...but this is Mott the Bono.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm coelacanth∅:

i think the title track must be my favorite on all things must pass. i also really like "apple scruffs" and about 12 others...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm doctorjazz:

Actually reminds me more of Jakob Dylan...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm David D:

Happy, happy anniversary, UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

I was sort of surprised upon learning that Sonny only had one solo outing, as Sonny. I've had that LP for eons and just assumed he did more solo work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm doctorjazz:

Of course, Jakob didn't INFLUENCE Hunter...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Uncle Michael:

David! Thank you.

You read my mind. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song by The Strawbs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:57pm Uncle Michael:

I was really disappointed that with the trope of popular music at the beginning and end of the MCU films, they used AC/DC...but not "Thunderstruck" for Thor.
  1:02pm Mark R:

Nice of you to remember Paul Butterfield today, and especially this track. "Screamin'" has to be one of my favorite instrumentals ever--two giants, Bloomfield and Butterfield, just blowing away!
  1:04pm Mark R:

Boy, looking back on the playlist, you've played a lot of my favorites already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:04pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks, Mark. Those two PBBB albums are monsters...and I don't even consider myself a blues guy. They were so far ahead of the "british blues revival."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm Uncle Michael:

Really digging these instrumental tracks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Parq:

UM, I've noticed that too. I haven't seen a ton of the MCU movies but on each of the ones I've seen, they seem to have brought on a Univ of Fla undegrad as the music editor.
  1:09pm own crabapplesatellite Johnzon:

Wish I could play guitar like this lol
  1:11pm Mark R:

Well, actually I consider the first Butterfield album and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton like two sides of the same coin. Two of the best guitar players in the world. On Cream's first American tour, they shared the bill with the Electric Flag at the Fillmore, and they jammed together. I'm surprised a recording of that night has never surfaced, because Bill Graham recorded every show off the soundboard, so I don't know why he wouldn't have recorded that one, but if there's a recording out there, I've never heard it.

i do vaguely remember Carter deregulating the airline industry. he didn't deregulate much, in general. Reagan did that...what got us into the heap of shit we're in now.
and Carter's involvement with the soviet union (not russia) was to increase the trade embargo on them, which i'd stand behind now, as i did then.

According to Wikipedia deregulation of transportation industry started under Nixon and "President Jimmy Carter devoted substantial effort to transportation deregulation, and worked with Congressional and civil society leaders to pass the Airline Deregulation Act (October 24, 1978), Staggers Rail Act (signed October 14, 1980), and the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 (signed July 1, 1980)."

I'll just recommend Horwitz's The Irony of Regulatory Reform, which describes the history of the deregulation of the telecommunications industry, the irony being that it was the industry that sought the regulation in the first place to protect monopolies.

  2:02pm own crabapplesatellite Johnzon:

America has always been great in terms of being a cultural powerhouse but in most areas we never have been. I am in agreement with Gerald Horne when he calls the Revolution of 1776 a counter Revolution, an effort to protect land owners "right" to own slaves against the growing threat of the abolition movement in England. America was founded on hypocrisy and has never managed to transcend that fully. We are not and haven't been number one in much of anything good for a while... then again all our trouble and strife has led to some great music and art so... that's nice.

crabapple as i said i do vaguely remember the airline deregulation. i don't know the details and didn't back then...and i have to catch a bus soon so i don't have much time to (turn on my other computer, then) click that link. i'd like to converse with you and i'm thinking we agree on the vast majority of political matters. you do know, though, that a president often works very hard to accomplish something that he doesn't necessarily agree with, because of pressure or threats. also, we've all had moments we're not proud of, and if i think this was the only decent human being in the presidency in my lifetime, i'm saying this *in relation to* other presidents.

...and people in charge rewrite history, so... (for instants if you look at ronnie reagan in wikipedia there's almost nothing negative - as if he was universally loved while he was in office, and didn't set this country up for all-out corporate takeover. ...but then it wasn't really him, it was the bush empire pulling reagan's strings)

Strange cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Parq:

I've had the They Might Be Giants cover of Tubthumping in my mind for a couple of days now, but this is much stranger. I dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Parq:

Is there a "Like A Version" album? I think I'd like that a lot.
Avatar 2:46pm barrett785:

Way to go on the anniversary! Walked in to my boss playing some of your archives this morning in the office. Hinky Dinky all/every weekends long here at the Merc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Uncle Michael:

Yes there is, Parq. It's a various artists cover comp. The songs may have all been recorded for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Uncle Michael:

Hey Pat, is that you? Thank you. I'll be in tomorrow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm doctorjazz:

That's me and I'll be here. Working up a little cult amongst us cashiers. Thanks for all the tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:48pm The Oscar:

Anyone ever hear that old "When Pigs Fly" comp? Similar premise-- it had such recordings as Lesley Gore doing "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," and Ani DiFranco and Jackie Chan duetting on "Unforgettable."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Parq:

Turns out the Like a Version comp tracks are all taken from an Australian radio show by the same name:

didn't Lennon & McCartney penn this for 3 dog night?
  2:55pm SeanG:

Georgie Pie!
  2:55pm Mark R:

I think "Long Long Long" is one of George's best (and most overlooked) songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Uncle Michael:

YW,Pat. Thank you for making sure present day grocers are down with the Hinky and the Dinky!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm The Oscar:

@coelacanth0 At first I read that as they wrote it for their dog, and I really wanted that to be true.
  2:56pm dan:

The Beatle song du jour. Very nice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm KevinfromBayRidge:

  2:57pm Mark R:

  2:59pm Stevel:
