Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

S.C. Lizzie, are you kidding? such a gorgeous voice. the arrangements are schmaltzy but KC's singing makes it good. (imo)

Avatar 12:32pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Karen's voice is pretty but... the songs are so awful. I was in high school and they were beloved by all the Jesus freak girls because they were so squeaky clean. Not like those nasty Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:33pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

I love I Gotcha, so happy to hear it!

I will also confess that I thought Treat Her Right was Elvis. I wasn't paying much attention it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Uncle Michael:

The songs are not awful. We have counterbalancing opinions.
Avatar 12:35pm βrian:

I saw a documentary about Tourette's Syndrome, called "Twist and Shout."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Funky16Corners:

Paul Williams and Roger Nichols were brilliant songwriters. A Veritable sublime melody factory.
  12:37pm frenchee:

@UM & @SCL: I do hear sadness, but yeah, probably hindsight. I have some trouble with the arrangements and yes, the "good" girls and a few boys in my h.s. also flattened my appreciation. But as I acquire years and wisdom, I hear the beauty. #contralto
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Funky16Corners:

The flipside of the Toys version of 'Can't Gert Enough Of You Baby' is another classical lift, but unlike this, it's terrible.
Avatar 12:37pm Sweet Corn Lizzie:

Brian I believe that documentary was actually called "Twitch and Shout". It was great.

Paul Williams.... don't get me started. We'll agree to disagree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 12:37pm Roberto:

Paul Williams appeared at a benefit for my daughter's high school a few years ago. He wasn't even the guest of honor -- that was Tony Bennett. Paul confessed that singing around Tony made him very self conscious.
  12:39pm still b/p:

Carpenter hits of the day were regarded as squishy, saccharine, treacly and thin by many back then, including me and plenty of people around me. But I’ve moved on to some respect and appreciation, as with many other — not all — music that was grating and mockable in my younger ears.
  12:39pm Dean:

Carpenters were okay by me at the time mostly because they covered Bacharach, and since they also performed Williams tunes, he passed muster, too.
Avatar 12:40pm βrian:

Ah, so it was. Saw it many years ago.

Naw, I heard Steppenwolf qua Steppenwolf, pre-Easy Rider, when I was just a tad older than my daughter is now. (Shudder.) That song is ageless, sounds as rockin' (mandatory apostrophe) now as it did then. The PSY, OTOH, sounds quaintly from another time.

I didn't see if somebody answered this, but it was indeed the Jackson 5 who kept "We've Only Just Begun" out of the #1 slot. The Jackson's dominated the Billboard charts that year--they had 4 or 5 #1s, or at least top 3's. Pretty impressive.

Drumming on my desk while this plays!
  1:28pm Dean:

How can "Wipe Out" not have made no. 1?! I thought it was the only record released that year.
  1:29pm still b/p:

I like to play this solo with a plastic coat hangar whipping back and forth in the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm coelacanth∅:

still, they probably assume her "chocha" is some kind of mexican rodent pet or something
  1:32pm Dean:

Darn, Big Jay McNeely's "Deacon's Hop" struck no. 1 in '49. Woulda been cool to hear that. BJM turns 91 on Monday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm The Oscar:

There's a LOT to unpack in this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm Parq:

These Gary Puckett lyrics sound so much sweeter than "Jesus Christ, I could go to jail for this!" would have.
  1:34pm Dean:

Not a little bit of victim blaming going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm coelacanth∅:

haha yeah....or "5'll get ya 10"...
Avatar 1:35pm Dominick:

before he had the time to change his mind
  1:36pm Dean:

Part 2 kept Part 1 from the top?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm doctorjazz:

Hard to imagine Purple Rain, which also couldn't be gotten away from, didn't make 1.
  1:37pm Dean:

Heh, a "part 2" *did* keep another tune from the top! Not being able to overtake Stevie is nothing to apologize about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm The Oscar:

Honestly, it's even hard to believe "Crazy" didn't make #1. It was certainly the only song that year it seemed like everyone could agree on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm annie:

sorry i'm late, i'm in the middle of a sewing gig; taking a break.. "Radio rethink" is the new pop-up??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Hey Hinky Dinkyers, Unc , you're doing an "Avis" of a shew!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm coelacanth∅:

you're playing it for that angelic background vocal
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Uncle Michael:

Annie! Kevin!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm annie:

i always try to figure out the theme of the show before i get here, i was close, but not on the money
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm coelacanth∅:

(now i am curious what kept "26 miles" from the peak)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm The Oscar:

True fact: Weird Al wrote a parody of "Live and Let Die" called "Chicken Pot Pie," but Macca blocked it on vegetarian grounds.
  1:45pm Dean:

I'm curious what was no. 3 when "26 Miles" peaked.
  1:46pm still b/p:

Heard Canadian Sunset start then had to take call from the guy fixing my exhaust. Talk about preempting pleasure with pain!
  1:46pm mauri:

hey there uncle michael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Parq:

Has anybody ever tried to mash up "The Horse" and "Gangnam Style"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Uncle Michael:

Get right on that, Parq!
Avatar 1:48pm Jeff Moore:

Because of a quirky way my brain is broken / special, words I hear or see written tend to hook into song titles or lyrics floating around in the back of my head and lead to the song associated with those lyrics making an appearance as an earworm, usually without my knowing consciously what the proximate cause was.

Back when people were saying and writing "YOLO!" a lot, Live and Let Die kept reappearing in my head.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Parq:

Nice job, Dee Dee, getting a plug for yourself in there.
  1:50pm still b/p:

Actual mashed potatoes are just like some music! Repulsed as a child, love as adult!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm Parq:

Do they still make mash-up software available? Jeff, I bet you'd know.
  1:50pm Dean:

A Scottish punk group, The Prats, copped this Stomp tune for their "Disco Pope."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Uncle Michael:

Jeff, you are strange.
Avatar 1:51pm Jeff Moore:

@Parq - nothing I've paid attention to, sorry.

Fire up Audition in multitrack mode and have at it?
Avatar 1:51pm Jeff Moore:

Michael, right back atcha!
Avatar 1:52pm Roberto:

Spinning Wheel was one of my favorite songs when I was a wee lad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm Uncle Michael:

Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56pm coelacanth∅:

boy my family hated the 'stones when i was little. i remember the first time i heard this -listening to the radio by myself in a closet.
Avatar 1:58pm geezerette:

Hey-Hey, it's the Hinkies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:59pm coelacanth∅:

the who?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm The Oscar:

It still blows my mind that "I'm a one-eyed cat peepin' at a seafood store" made it to airwaves.
Avatar 2:01pm geezerette:

Guess Who...YES! Bread with small faces...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:01pm coelacanth∅:

were you wearing a bright red onesie?
  2:02pm still b/p:

Each of these is a 2-peaker. Like a certain Kansas City.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02pm annie:

any one else got a new pop-up player today?
Avatar 2:03pm Roberto:

You should be able to find a replacement bulb without too much trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm coelacanth∅:

Oscar i loved that song when i was little (as i still do) and never imagined anything besides a gnarly old ally cat! what a genius line!
Avatar 2:04pm geezerette:

The Oscar,me too.

Annie,it appeared yesterday on my screen and it doesn't work!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm doctorjazz:

Be My Baby may not have made #1, but that drum beat sure did...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm coelacanth∅:

you're right UM. if i hadn't heard it from you i may not have believed it if someone said this didn't top the chart.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07pm The Oscar:

Okay, I'll bite: What song made it beyond "The Valley of the Dolls?"
Avatar 2:08pm geezerette:

Great song from a truly terrible movie that I've watched like ten times...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm coelacanth∅:

g - "bread with small faces"...is that like turtle pancakes, or santa cookies?
  2:08pm Dean:

Didn't know Andre and then-spouse Dory Previn wrote this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm KevinfromBayRidge:

If BMB was charting in '64, there would've been a shitload of Beatles hits to break through.
  2:09pm Dean:

When I think Andre Previn, I think Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet and a really kinda odd gospel record, What Headphones?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm annie:

@geezerette: it works fine for me, obviously, but wow.. is it a permanent thing?
Avatar 2:10pm geezerette:

coel, either will do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:11pm coelacanth∅:

but - if there WERE such a thing as "guilty pleasures"...
Avatar 2:12pm geezerette:

Annie, I need to connect from show page pop-up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm annie:

aahhh... i used the link on the home page
Avatar 2:14pm geezerette:

Loving this set. Like a day spa for the brain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:14pm coelacanth∅:

i've heard from more than one person how they hate this song. i don't get it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm annie:

you don't even want to know the awful song in my head lately.. ..tough thing is it's a GOOD song, but man.. those same 2 damn lines..ask me this evening when i'm falling asleep, right now it's out of the web
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm annie:

... Really??? this one??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Uncle Michael:

Uh huh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm coelacanth∅:

>6 minutes...not too surprising. (+ the folk people and their hate!)
Avatar 2:19pm geezerette:

UM!!! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Just because a song is one of the most historically significant ever, doesn't mean it's a #1.
Avatar 2:21pm geezerette:

Warhol Factory anthem.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Parq:

Gotta go. Meeting Mrs. Parq for lunch at Court Square and then heading to the Record Fair. Will be on the ticket booth tonight, so stop by and say hi. I'll be the old balding guy with glasses.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:23pm Parq:

Kind of remarkable how many of these #2 hits have become what Michael Shelly would call number one hits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm coelacanth∅:

have fun Parq - wish i could go
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm coelacanth∅:

Uncle M according to wikipedia, Mike Vale played bass on that Tommy James album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm KevinfromBayRidge:

@Parq. Unless they need a last minute volunteer tonight,I'll be there tommorow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm coelacanth∅:

(makes sense)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Uncle Michael:

Bye Parq!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm coelacanth∅:

! -then what the hell was #1?!
Avatar 2:30pm geezerette:

Go cats,go!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm coelacanth∅:

Um if one doesn't know what week(s) a song reached #2 in how does one find out what was #1, without scouring the whole year?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm coelacanth∅:

(that is, looking at every week's billboard chart)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Uncle Michael:

One leans on others that have done just that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm annie:

oh no, !! cher alert! cher alert
Avatar 2:34pm geezerette:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm annie:

i loved her before she changed her persona..
Avatar 2:34pm geezerette:

The Sonny years.
Avatar 2:35pm geezerette:

He was some kind of genius.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm coelacanth∅:

one of his best
Avatar 2:37pm Dominick:

The singing walrus!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Rich in Washington:

I can't help but think of the SCTV/Rick Moranis bit about this song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm coelacanth∅:

i like the Terry Reid version...and Nancy's...and...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm listener Rey:

There's a Billboard Hot 100 chart for the year
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm The Oscar:

@Rich Yes!! It's unbelievable how great Moranis was in those days.
Avatar 2:39pm Roberto:

Do I detect a backing Doobie on this track?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm listener Rey:

Did I hear Micheal McDonald on the chorus in this Chris Cross song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

@The Oscar: He brought a real music nerd element to the show. Amazing.
Avatar 2:40pm Roberto:

Michael McDoobie, to be specific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm listener Rey:

Just thinking the same thing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Rich in Washington:

It is Michael McDonald. The SCTV skit plays off his backing vocal segments. It's worth tracking down. I won't post the youtube link because I think it's rude during a show.
Avatar 2:42pm geezerette:

wah wah wah...ooh-wah-ooh-wah ooh...
  2:42pm Dean:

Had to take a break (no. 1). Consequently, and fortunately, I missed Christopher Cross. No song, other than "Sailing," perhaps, more deserves no. 2.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm listener Rey:

That sounds hi-larious! Oh I gotta go find that SCTV skit right now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm coelacanth∅:

Rey @2.38 i saw that -Thanks, but it doesn't help.
Avatar 2:44pm Dominick:

all right!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm annie:

i just never felt comfortable with cher's treatment of sonny on teevee... she ridiculed him unmercifully and he ate it up.. strange relationship, to be sure
  2:45pm Listener Robert:

I saw that SCTV bit when it was 1st run, too, though not high. It's not lampooning the singer, it's lampooning the structure of the song.
  2:46pm Listener Robert:

Annie, that was an act -- probably written by Sonny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm annie:

well, all the more strange, i say LR... there has to be a straight guy but that was brutal.
Avatar 2:49pm geezerette:

Love Everlys.
Avatar 2:51pm geezerette:

UM,if I smile anymore my dimples will meet in the middle. I may have to smile all day.
  2:52pm Dean:

K.D. Lang's only made it to 28 on the BB charts. Her "Constant Craving" peaked at 2.
  2:53pm Listener Robert:

What was brutal was his fatal skiing accident, because just like the cartoons would depict a doofus. So he died according to the image he'd constructed for himself.
  2:53pm still b/p:

I thought the SCTV bit was having fun with McDonald’s busyness as a presence all over the place in pop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Uncle Michael:

That's idiotic, Robert.
  2:54pm Dean:

As brutal is the law enacted in his name by our doofus Congress.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm KevinfromBayRidge:

Talking about #2 "hits", howze about the 2016 popular vote results. On "2nd" thought, let's not talk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm coelacanth∅:

constant craving is a good song. not much of a KD Lang fan aside from that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm annie:

.... i preferred him over cher.. he seemd to want to say so much
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm annie:

KD is ok, i love the love songs.. not that there's anything wrong with that..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm coelacanth∅:

nothing wrong with that. people who "can't" relate to Love songs actually just "wont". it's sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:58pm annie:

it's funny about sentimentalism.... i sometimes seek out the things that make me all weepy..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm doctorjazz:

Awww, all done, thanks UM! really great fun, what an idea!
See ya all next week!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks for hanging out, my friends. I'll see you next week for an anniversary party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm coelacanth∅:

...like this incredible song?
Avatar 2:59pm geezerette:

Thanks,UM! Think I'll have to be happy all day!
Happy weekend to all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm coelacanth∅:
