I got lost in the back hallways and ended up here. I'll just take a seat, if I may.

@Brian: Oh shit! Really? Is that why Durr Trumpscum was having an extended private sulk yesterday?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 12:06pm Funky16Corners:

Hey PRB! That seems to be the conventional wisdom.

At the very least, let us hope Don-Don Jr. has the pleasure of starring in his first perp-walk.

When I first met friend Keiko (friends of David Weinstein), and I told her I knew some Japanese (and told her I mostly remember profanity), she asked what I knew and after telling her, she slapped me (we're still good friends).

Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 12:55pm Funky16Corners:

Why do you suppose so much rudimentary knowledge of other languages starts and stops with profanity? Universal feeling?
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 12:55pm Funky16Corners:

Hey C!
  Tue. 11/13/18 1:02pm Dean:

In my experience, the first steps toward new language acquisition involve ordering beer.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:02pm northguineahills:

Considering I was 10-13 years old in Japan, I think it's rather obvious in my case. (first words you learn, the last you forget)
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:03pm Funky16Corners:

Also, when you're a kid, cursing in another language is a kind of secret code

Good moody pieces for a moody day! And yes, the first Italian words I leaned on landing were swear words oh and food! I was hungry and angry
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:06pm northguineahills:

Of course, I picked up my Mexi slang from when my wife is less then happy w/ me.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:07pm Funky16Corners:

My brain is swimming in Italian and Yiddish slang from my mother-in-law (born Italian, converted to Judaism later in life)
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:08pm northguineahills:

NYC gave me the Yiddish lexicon, unfortunately, no here really knows Yiddish.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:18pm Funky16Corners:

Having grown up in the NY area, and in a neighborhood that was almost exclusively Catholic and Jewish, I think there are s many linguistic things that I take for granted that someone from the midwest might never know

  Tue. 11/13/18 1:31pm Dean:

I picked up the Monk complete Riverside LP box on a close-out at Tower Records, probably early '90s. Same for the complete Bill Evans Riverside LPs.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:32pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Dean! Yeah, also great stuff. I could listen to Monk all day long
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:32pm northguineahills:

So jealous of Dean....
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:34pm Passaic River Blues:

@Dean: Man, the Evans set must be fantastic.

this entire show is great ♫
  Tue. 11/13/18 1:36pm Mark R:

It's cool hearing all this Monk & Miles. I have most of these songs already, but it's fun knowing other people are digging them at the same time!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:36pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Michael, Mark!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:37pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:38pm Funky16Corners:

But of course!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:38pm Michael 98145:

Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:40pm northguineahills:

I have to admit, Bill Evans was the first jazz I got into (when I was 16). I imagined it was what NYC felt like on a rainy night in the 60s.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:40pm Cal Zone!:

Thank you NGH! It's been a great career for me!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:40pm northguineahills:

I have Mile's "On the Corner" Sessions in my car right now.....
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:41pm Funky16Corners:

I have to get out my electric Miles and spend some time with it. It's been a while
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:41pm northguineahills:

@Cal Zone!: I worked at the uni library when I was in grad school.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:42pm northguineahills:

(I mean undergrad)
  Tue. 11/13/18 1:42pm Dean:

My experience echoes yours, northguineahills. I heard Evans' "Peace Piece" on the radio in my mid- to late-teens, ran out and bought The Bill Evans Album (which doesn't in fact include "Peace Piece"). Been enjoying him every since. Another jazz LP I simply had to have after hearing it on radio was Jack Wilkins' Red Clay. Special ordered it from the record store where I'd worked.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:45pm Passaic River Blues:

Not too long ago, I read the 33 1/3-Bloomsbury book about "Bitches Brew" by Greg Gella, the Brooklyn Rail's music editor. It's a short, excellent examination of the recording and unorthodox editing of the album. Sent me on a McLaughlin and Zawinul/Shorter/Weather Report tailspin, which was awesome.

@NGH: That's kind of what Evans sounds to me, too. A rain-cooled night in Manhattan of the mind.
  Tue. 11/13/18 1:47pm Dean:

Leo Smith's Yo Miles with Henry Kaiser is a fun updating of electric Miles.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:51pm northguineahills:

Haven't heard Don Cherry sound so conventionally hard-bop this late!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:51pm Funky16Corners:

This is a great session. Recorded in 1960 but in the can until 1966
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:54pm Passaic River Blues:

@Dean: I will have to investigate!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:59pm Michael 98145:

... anyone else remember when Forest Flower-era Charles Lloyd was touring? with light show accompaniment.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 1:59pm Doug Schulkind:

Focus on Testify!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:00pm Funky16Corners:

hey Doug!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:03pm northguineahills:

If one is to fill the aural void that is Tony, Larry is sure doing it correct!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:03pm Funky16Corners:

Thank you sir!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:04pm Doug Schulkind:

On my lunch break at my new job. Eating with Coltrane, Cherry and Grogan is a damn good deal.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:05pm Funky16Corners:

It's interesting, the first track the rhythm section is Percy Heath and Ed Blackwell, and on this one it's Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell, and as much as I dig Charlie, I think Heath was really working it out
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:11pm northguineahills:

Congrats Doug, glad the job is going well!

I somehow missed this Sonny Rollins album

going out to lunch in about 10 minutes, if I don't get back, thanks Larry! (episode faved!)
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:12pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks NGH!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:14pm Michael 98145:

Thank goodness all these recordings were preserved. Really.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:15pm Funky16Corners:

Yes indeed. So much brilliant music that you can reach out and grab any time.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:16pm CTEmpress:

great show Larry. Consistent and clean, Daddy-O!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:16pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Connie!

Thanks Larry, hear ya later this week!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:23pm Funky16Corners:

OK NGH! On to tomorrow night!
  Tue. 11/13/18 2:32pm Mark R:

Really loving the show today--I have to get me some more Sonny Rollins. The only older Sonny I have is the Village Vanguard stuff--which is fantastic, but you're playing some of the great studio stuff I HAVE to have.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:34pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks Mark! Are you talking about the trio stuff? I love those records.
  Tue. 11/13/18 2:36pm Mark R:

Love the early Freddie Hubbard albums, too. Maybe you're gonna play something from "Hub Tones"! Freddie Also played on some great Blue Note albums by Eric Dolphy and Grachan Moncur III.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:37pm Funky16Corners:

I am indeed! Closing the show with a Hub Tones track!
  Tue. 11/13/18 2:39pm Mark R:

Nice, not that I'd tell you what to play--you have a very good handle on that, indeed. And yes, I was talking about the Sonny Rollins trio stuff, which, believe it or not, was the very first album ever recorded at the Village Vanguard. I guess Max Gordon was upset that he was losing two tables right by the stage for the recording equipment!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:39pm Funky16Corners:

Those sessions are so great. The idea of a sax-led trio is so cool
  Tue. 11/13/18 2:46pm Dean:

I see a Stan Getz album with tracks recorded at the VV in June '57, five months before the Rollins record. Difference is the Getz was only partly recorded there, and it's an Italian issue, which likely means it's a bootleg: https://www.discogs.com/Stan-Getz-Quartet-Live-At-The-Village-Vanguard/release/5812780
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:51pm David D:

Thanks, Larry for the great sounds today!
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:51pm Funky16Corners:

Thanks David!

My pleasure, Michael! Distracting myself as well.
Avatar Tue. 11/13/18 2:55pm Funky16Corners:
