Family of God is the one known Quadfecta, but this is not that Family of God... unless they went industrial later.

@djelrock: perhaps of interest, perhaps not, Irwin got me hooked on WFMU with his Incorrect Music hour, way back in the day. I'm the sort who find his show, and WFMU, so hard to resist. I expect I'm not alone.

Joe is so totally right about this "culture memorizing without understanding" point -- the culture world is full of them
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:32pm mariano:

@common & @chris: It's funny, since I work from home I usually have FMU (or KFJC or WWOZ) on in the background, and the weekly schedule has become something of a liturgical calendar!
  Wed. 4/23/14 4:32pm Robert:

That was my favorite Joe Frank, and I'd been waiting for it to come up.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:33pm Whooda:

@Longtime Listener Back in Joe's day we still had enough critical thinking skills to 'memorize'. Now we simply communicate in superficial 'image' that require only the intended meaning behind the image as symbol
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:36pm mariano:

But the thing with teleportation is that the real you is destroyed, then a perfect copy made at a remote location.
  Wed. 4/23/14 4:37pm Longtime Commenter:

@Whooda -- superficiality ftw.
  Wed. 4/23/14 4:37pm djelrock:

@mariano: I am in ur same situation. Talk radio is fine for some people but not for me. It makes me sleepy. I like me some weird tunes. Like Miley Cirrus, right Irwin!
Wed. 4/23/14 4:38pm sean from ia:

@mariano The perfect copy however will not realize that. If the copy is truely perfect it is actually the real you.

The problem you seem to have is that the original you experienced destruction.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:38pm chris:

My son says Joe Frank is scary. I was describing how Joe's vocal cadence, and his looped and layered sounds, is kind of a signature of his art. Then teleporation happened. I didn't convince him to keep listening.
  Wed. 4/23/14 4:40pm djelrock:

Well zed Chris. I dont like Irwins show too much but it's better than that noise garbage on Friday afternoons. God that's awful!
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:40pm mariano:

@sean: I do in fact have a problem with the original me experiencing destruction, not to make too big a deal out of it!
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:41pm ironybread:

Just FYI, the female singing voice during the breaks is Judith Owen (Harry Shearer's significant other) - a performance commissioned by Joe just for this episode. www.judithowen.net
  Wed. 4/23/14 4:42pm Longtime Commenter:

But what do you -really- think, djelrock?
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:42pm chris:

I hear that, @djelrock... Fridays are hard for me, too... until BillyJam, that is.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:42pm Carmichael:

Tell me something djelrock: Why do you listen to FMU? All your posts are negative rants about the very program you're listening to, but you never seem to turn it off. Why do you continually put yourself through the pain?
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:44pm common:

@mariano from 4:32: I wish I worked from home. but if i didn't get to listen to fmu at my horrid job, i would not be here.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:44pm chris:

When I find the music difficult, I'm still completely, jaw droppingly impressed with the DJ. I figure it must just be me that doesn't get it.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:45pm common:

i love the friday programming! whatever floats your individual boat.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:47pm Stevel:

Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:48pm Carmichael:

@Chris: thanks for the information. I know her from Richard Thompson's 1,000 years of popular music DVD. She and Debra Dobkin accompany RT live.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 4:48pm mariano:

I actually like the Friday noise stuff, same as Brian T and Fabio's stuff: it's really good work music, something about the abstractness of it.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:50pm Carmichael:

My Fridays consist of Doug Schulkind's Give the Drummer Some, Bryce, Kurt Gottschalk and Shut Up Weirdo. That is a huge rainbow of styles in 8 hours.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:51pm chris:

OK, I'll give Fridays a try again, damnit... I knew it had to be me. :-)
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 4:56pm Carmichael:

@Carmichael I'm a sadist.
  Wed. 4/23/14 5:07pm nate:

I seriously just heard a local college radio station censor the word "bong" from that Courtney Barnett hit song, which I originally discovered via Irwin. How many angry calls do you think Ken got about it?

Friday night's Partch show: www.montclair.edu...
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:09pm mariano:

I love Partch's interpretations of Ancient Greek music. At one time I had to study AG and since then I've always been really interested in what ancient music sounded like.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:16pm Whooda:

@Mariano It would be an interesting study to learn the history of the 'language' of musical sounds. For example why we associate certain sounds as 'sad', or 'introspective' or even 'psychedelic'.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:21pm Matt from Springfield:

Yeah! Harry Partch!
Hey there, Irwin and Irwineers!
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:22pm Carmichael:

Matt, you just missed a Simpsons discussion. Thought your antennae would alert you.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:23pm Whooda:

Heydee Ho Matt from Springfield.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:24pm Matt from Springfield:

@Whooda: The "heaviness" of Minor chords is probably what makes them feel "sad" on a primal level. Some of that goes all the way back to the beginning of Western music's Renaissance codification; for if Minor chords weren't "sad", they wouldn't be "Minor"...
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:25pm Matt from Springfield:

And, a Hi de hi de hi de ho Whooda!

@Carm: Aww man! Was that on the Scenario? I don't see one here.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:25pm mariano:

@Whooda: Oh, there was a lot of philosophy and religion associated with the different modes in AG. Plato refers to the wild youth of his day who listen to phrygian mode music that excites their passions. Can't remember much, but he and others also ascribe different moral qualities to other modes.
  Wed. 4/23/14 5:25pm lardo:

He sounds like Jello Biafra on valium
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:27pm Droll:

Whooda, I've often wondered about that, I think it's all in the microtonal parts of music -- stuff western music constrains. Microtonal music often evokes responses ordinary 12-note music does not (ie: the current music we hear).

Accurately mimicking the sound of musicians often involves noodling with microtones -- Paul McCartney's Hoffner bass has awful intonation (that we've come to associate with the sound of hit records).
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:28pm Matt from Springfield:

Giorgios Klintonides of Samos: "We Want The Phryg!"
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:28pm Whooda:

@mariano I've always wondered who gets to decide that 'marches' inspire patriotism, or who proclaimed classical music as 'uplifting' or Joe Walsh as ass-kicking guitar work. OK, I guess the Joe Walsh thing *is* pretty obvious.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:33pm Carmichael:

@Matt: Yes, lots of fun Amanda today, including a Simpsons recap.
  Wed. 4/23/14 5:33pm Laura L:

And "Picture Mommy Dead" too! Harry Lindgren did a lotta work!
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:34pm mariano:

@Whooda: Some of it's in the Republic (theoryofmusic.wordpress.com...), but if you Google Plato and musical modes you should get a lot of hits. Funny thing is, because of Medieval misreadings, our current modes and their AG counterparts don't correspond perfectly.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:35pm Matt from Springfield:

I do enjoy her Simpsons recaps! I listen to her Archives more frequently since that segment started. (AND I'm wicked envious how much Simpsons NYC's syndicated broadcaster apparently gives their fans! Since DC's moved over from Fox to My20 they only show them after prime time on weeknights!)
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:37pm Whooda:

@mariano Thanks for the link. Thinking (over thinking) this idea, I would guess Harry Lindgren is widely responsible for how we interpret sound to image as he was, pardon the pun, instrumental in combining which sounds we see associated with which (moving) images.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:40pm Matt from Springfield:

Lee Morgan twin spin! How I love these.

(Irwin must be vacuumin' about now...)
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:42pm Carmichael:

Great trumpets there. I need to listen to more Lee Morgan.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:43pm Irwin:

@Carm: short life (dead at 34), but a tremendous catalog. He helmed something like 25 sessions over a 14-year span.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:43pm mariano:

@Whooda: I'm embarrassed to admit my ignorance, but I don't think I know Harry Lindgren. I Googled it but got an Australian mathematician!
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Chin Up, Chin of Britain!
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:45pm Whooda:

@Mariano Here the philosopher claims which melodies match which emotions, but gives no empirical evidence why, ". . . but rather to discover what rhythms are the expressions of a courageous and harmonious life; and when we have found them, we shall adapt the foot and the melody to words having a like spirit, not the words to the foot and melody."
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:48pm Whooda:

@Mariano I only know of Harry Lindgren what Irwin just told us. He was at the forefront of 'talkies' and worked for another 30 years or more as a movie sound engineer. So, by logic, we owe our interpretation of sound/film associations largely, in part, to him.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:50pm mariano:

@Whooda: Plato's the wrong place to be looking for empirical anything. He more or less felt that all you needed was pure reason to explore the mysteries of the cosmos, but he usually confused pure reason with his own opinions and prejudices. Sorry I didn't hear Irwin talking about HL, downside of listening while I work!
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:50pm Carmichael:

Thanks, Irwin. I'm comforted that he's not making more music while I'm trying to buy up his back catalogue.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:51pm Whooda:

@Mariano forgive me, I just made my first champane from a bottle of dry wine and a C02 bottle of compressed gas. I'm a bit tipsy. I mean to refer to the sound engineer that Irwin mentioned from his wikipedia search. Whatever his name is. Sorry, I'm not much of a stickler for details while I'm lit :)
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:52pm Matt from Springfield:

God Damn it! This SUUUUUCKS sooooo muuuuuuuuch.
Avatar    Wed. 4/23/14 5:54pm Carmichael:

You probably wouldn't like Amanda either, I'm guessing.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:54pm mariano:

@djelrock:
Sure you're a sadist, not a masochist?
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:54pm Whooda:

@Mariano I was being a bit ironic in that it's impossible to associate emotion with any specific melody or scale or composition. Like Plato, someone just has to say it is so. My question is *who* got to say it's is so. In this respect I have equal authority as Plato to say so.
Avatar Wed. 4/23/14 5:54pm Mr. Lowry:

@Whooda: Yeah, in the end it boils down to someone's personal opinion. Plato is usually thought of fondly these days, but he definitely had his more unsavory, authoritarian side, as in his musical opinions. The closest thing we have to his Republic today would be North Korea, and that's hardly an exaggeration!

@Mariano I just think that whoever claimed minor keys were less pleasurable as whole keys fucked up music appreciation for everyone.

Listening a day late on podcast, but just have to chime in that the vocalist riffing at the end of the Joe Frank piece, the fantastically talented Judith Owen, is the wife of the great Harry Shearer ... which (to add to the Simpsons references here) sort of makes her Mrs. Montgomery Burns...
