Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Options December 11, 2013: Annual show dedicated to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack. Plus, a special salute.

Back in October 2006 I dedicated my first show on the regular WFMU weekly schedule to Jim McIntyre, a/k/a Jimmy Mack, who was one of my best friends in high school. He was also the person who turned me on to a TON of new music that was coming out at the time -- Cheap Trick, The Dictators, The Ramones, The Stranglers, Ultravox, and Television are just a few of the bands that I first heard of because of my friendship with Jimmy. Imagine being in your teens and having a friend turn you on to just ONE of those bands. Now increase that impact tenfold, or more, and you start to get an idea of the importance of Jimmy's friendship. OK, not every band he turned me on to was super-cool -- I definitely remember him giving me the first couple of Foreigner albums -- but stilll, Jimmy had a great ear for cool music that wasn't yet -- or, sometimes, ever -- part of the mainstream.

Fortunately for me -- and for you -- Jimmy's excitement, enthusiasm and passion for discovering and sharing new music was matched by his generosity. Nearly every time I saw him he'd present me with a bag of extra (or rejected) promo records from his job at WBCN, the leading rock radio station in Boston, where he started working while we were still in high school.

In the summer of 1985, Jimmy learned he had AIDS. A year later he passed away, at the age of 25. As you can see from the obit at left, he was as generous with his time as he was with records. Regrettably I had lost contact with Jimmy by this time, and didn't hear of his passing until a few years later.

In the fall of 2006 I dedicated my first show on the regular WFMU schedule to Jimmy. I wanted to acknowledge his impact on my life, and especially on my own musical tastes. Since then I've dedicated one of the first shows of the WFMU fall schedule to him, since his influence is never too far from what you hear me play on my show. Thanks for taking a moment to read about him, and thanks for listening to WFMU.

Ah, the annual bittersweet Jimmy Mack tribute.

Thanks for sharing, EFD.

LOVING THIS SET.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 9:07pm Alex of Chicago:

The Sweet threw me off for second. Will miss Scharpling, but he turned me on to WFMU. There are a lot of fans in Chicago since we don't have a free form station quite like this (CHIRP is trying to get something similar started). My support will continue. Also, that's a sweet tribute to your friend, Jim.

Ha! At first I thought it was a tribute to The Best Show theme songs. Nice start!
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 9:08pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...relish that transition from the last program, whatever the intention - great Sweet track; someone should do a block of Sweet & Slade & a bit of good early Queen & other things to go w/ them you would know that I don't...
- WBCN Boston: grew up in smalltown New Hampshire trying to pull it in on a battery-operated radio plugged into bigger speakers - which tended to work better @ night...

We're gonna miss the best show in nashville, Evan. This is a nice surprise. I'm getting misty.

Hi Evan and all other friends! Always love the Jimmy Mack tribute, particularly glad it's tonight this year, as it's my birthday. Sweet (ha) soundtrack!

Thank you Stevel & RRN63!. I feel I'm aging quite nicely, like a fine wine. Sag's rule. Though since I was born 2 months prematurely, I always wonder if I'm actually an Aquarius or even Pisces.

I recently finished reading VJ: The Unplugged Adventures of MTV's First Wave, a very fun read. ** Best part - Martha Quinn states that when she was approached to audition she RECOMMENDED EFD to be a VJ rather than herself!!!!!!!! *** Maybe y'all knew that already. I did not.

"Stuffin' Evan's Muffin" does not have the same ring.

@efd - Free Fall reminds me that I also just finished reading an AC/DC biography that includes many pithy & wonderful Angus Young quotes, I need to go back & collate the most choice.

Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:49pm Holly in NC:

Hi Danne!!! Seems tonight I'm sharing much of my recent reading material. Have you read Rick Wakeman's Grumpy Old Rock Star? That's what I'm reading right now, and it is laugh out loud gut-bustingly funny. Everyone else - one doesn't have to be a prog fan to enjoy.

@EL - work or drink a gazillion bloody marys while cooking endless pans of bacon.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:51pm Droll:

EFD knows Martha Quinn?!?! I had the hugest crush on Martha!

Happy B-Day Holly! I'm gonna hazard a guess DD is familiar with Rick Wakeman _______.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:54pm steve:

"drink a gazillion bloody marys while cooking endless pans of bacon" is maybe the best new years advice i've ever heard
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:54pm Holly in NC:

@Droll - could you imagine if you grew up watching EFD rather than Martha? I so now want to see the "Dog Police" video...
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:56pm nanantatee:

this is cool man totes diggin
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:56pm Droll:

Holly, EFD on MTV is a smaller leap than MTV to FMU.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:57pm Holly in NC:

I also find it funny that Nina Blackwood was supposed to be the "hot chick", and every single guy I know was crushed out on Martha, not Nina.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:58pm JakeGould:

Nina Blackwood was the blonde. Martha Quinn is the brunette. There ya go!
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 10:59pm JakeGould:

Dog Police. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:00pm Holly in NC:

@Droll - but MTV to FMU no larger than, say, Tommy Boy to FMU (sniff I miss Monica)

@JakeGould xoxoxo
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:01pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nina - hot
Martha - cute
MTV - charitably, a mixed blessing
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:02pm nanantatee:

i have to shout out to the thanksgiving substitute who played "looking for the magic" it blew my mind, and then another song about magic afterwards. i wish there would be a show with all songs about magic.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:03pm Holly in NC:

btw Evan, thank you for 'Lady Orange Peel'
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:03pm JakeGould:

Holly, I barely remembered that until now. 25+ years of crust has been released from my brain. I don’t know.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:03pm Danne D:

@Holly I haven't read that Rick Wakeman book - actually I need to catch up on my reading in general (right reading an old book about how ridiculously influence the NFL is/was(?) by gambler/gangster types. And still trying to plow through the Making of the President 1964.
Wed. 12/11/13 11:05pm Eddy in Australia:

Joining the broadcast a little late today. Happy birthday, Holly! Down here they write today's date as 11/12/13, which is kinda cool.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:06pm Danne D:

(Re MTV some of us didn't mind seeing Nina Blackwood as well y'know - you could like 'em both. Just sayin' :)

And Jake Gould wins the day by posting the first MTV Basement Tapes winning video (and a song that later would fall into the category of songs like Living in a Box where the Band, Album, and Song are all titled the same).

Actually I don't think that Dog Police won the whole thing - it just won it's week, but was easily the only Basement Tapes song I ever remembered.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:08pm Danne D:

Never realized Irwin coined the term, Droll :) Thanks for the site.
Avatar Wed. 12/11/13 11:27pm Danne D:

Dog Police does not appear on the list. However, I'm not 100% certain that they went beyond a single. I do distinctly remember MTV playing the video with a trifecta format though.
