System Preferences > Sound > Sound Effects ... Clear the three check boxes for play user interface, play feedback, play front row", and kill the "alert volume" slider...

@Elwyn - in all seriousness, if this is a personal computer (not under the control of I.T. policies) just turn off Automatic Updates from the Control Panel (I can't recall where at the moment). Then just set a personal reminder to apply updates at your leisure.

Microsoft releases them monthly, on the first Tuesday of the month, so plan accordingly.
