![]() Morning Meghan (and to all and future attendees in the Park) |
![]() |
![]() Hiya, Meghan and good morning. And away we go! |
![]() |
![]() Good morning all! Let's try to warm up via music..... cause damn it's cold out there! |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:03am
C.S.:
Djibouti, Uganda, Rwanda...oh my. |
![]() |
![]() Hi Meghan! Africa forever! |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:03am
Chuck:
Greeting one and all! |
![]() |
![]() Shake your Djibouti..... Yep, I totally had to do that.... |
![]() |
![]() Hi Meghan - enjoying the recent archives - glad to take part of the journey live today... |
![]() |
![]() @"Shake your Djibou" *LOL* |
![]() |
![]() glad you are enjoying our journey. Not many left! |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:07am
C.S.:
With all this travel through Africa, it's a good thing you're not a movie star because they'd make you adopt some kids or something. |
![]() |
![]() Hi, Meghan! So this is Djibouti? |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:11am
Incredulous:
Hi Meghan! Nice start, and I really dig that "Come to Africa" poster. Feeling warmer already...
![]() |
![]() Let me ask yoy guys and girls, how many of you still use Winamp? I didn't know it was shutting down neither that it was owned by AOL, but I've already seem that I'm the only one of my social circle that still uses it. |
![]() |
![]() Hi Doca: Used Winamp on my vintage WIN2000-system. It was very slow strting. |
![]() |
![]() WinAmp... wow, not since the early naughts.... |
![]() |
![]() Meghan: But if you ever wanted to make it a world tour (someday) I'm sure nobody would be disappointed... |
![]() |
![]() I hear Winamp is going away.... |
![]() |
![]() Hi, Guido and Dave. Yes, it's been a while I guess since everybody used it, but I never grown used to iTunes or any other music player, specially because I've never had an iPod and other music players seem all heavy and slow |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:15am
C.S.:
What davex said. This has been a great series of shows. Learned a lot. |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:16am
P-90:
Actually, I didn't realize that Winamp was still around.
Thu. 11/21/13 6:17am
KP:
Hey Meghan. | |
![]() |
![]() Good Morning All |
![]() |
![]() A few more Dave's and we'll have the alphabet covered. I should tell my good friend Dave W to join the crowd! |
![]() |
![]() I use the media-Player since I'm lazy. Suggestions for better choices welcome. Quit I-Tunes long ago because of annoying updates. |
![]() |
![]() The VLC player works pretty well for me. If you have iTunes, that also works for .pls files. |
![]() |
![]() Yarf...nice reading comprehension. You quit iTunes already. |
![]() |
![]() I use VLC for Video. But I'm still too dump to use it as an audio-Tool (managing albums, etc.) |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:25am
fred von helsing:
I'd rather have my teeth pulled out than try to use iTunes to manage anything |
![]() |
![]() @fred: that's a sentence Snake Plissken would have said |
![]() |
![]() I was stupid enough to introduce my mum to iTunes and she found that useful. Now on repeated occasions there come coplaints "where is my menu? why doesn't it load?" |
![]() |
![]() I haven't jettisoned iTunes yet. 166k songs and growing. |
![]() |
![]() hey Meghan, when you reach South Africa, I think these mixes are helpful: www.okayafrica.com... |
![]() |
![]() I'm kinda tired of downloading music, I only keep up to some blogs I like. Other than that, I download and then delete it almost right away |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:34am
fred von helsing:
gonna try beets.radbox.org, have heard excellent reports |
![]() |
![]() Does downloading make music meaningless? |
![]() |
![]() May I download my fruitcup? |
![]() |
![]() I think the maraschino cherry got stuck.... |
![]() |
![]() @Guido: I don't think so as m musical "upbringing" was all through the .mp3, but I've got tired of having too much music stored in my computer that I'll never listen. If I want to have quick access to a song, Youtube can do just that. |
![]() |
![]() I wish I could buy most of the new stuff I listen to, but conversion rates don't do no good for Brazilian reais. |
![]() |
![]() Allright: too much, too quick, all attention is gone. It's kind of discipline in "digesting". |
![]() |
![]() my goal is to have enough music available offline so I can hit play and let it go for a year. I'm at 324 days worth at the moment. Once I hit that goal, I can fall off the grid. |
![]() |
![]() exactly |
![]() |
![]() @doca: I read on a Matador Records blog that they stopped shipping to Brazil because half of their sales were reported stolen. :-( |
![]() |
![]() In discussions with my fellow local music nerds we often come to the point, that we old vinyl-collectors learned to appreciate anything, even the bad albums, just because the albums were too expensive. we had to like them and had to listen to them somehow. |
![]() |
![]() @Dave: on that day, please upload the playlist here for us! @Spatulator: really? But that seems appropriated, it must have happened when the albums came because the customs police is know as kinda corrupt. I have already thought about starting a small company to make Brazilian vinyl releases, but I don't have the money neither the legal expertise |
![]() |
![]() I'm still using winamp at home. It's lightweight and does what I expect from it, which is playing the WFMU streams and archives. I guess I'll have to give VLC a try |
Thu. 11/21/13 6:59am
Andrew:
Hi Meghan & everyone ^_^ I came in on Elly Wamala, nice track. aww, missed Djibouti, again O_O hope everyone is good ^_^ quite a reggae flavour to these tracks (or maybe more so reggae is influenced by music from these countries) (just noticed you mentioned winamp, i'm using VLC, because i had to load up my browser (too many tabs) so I listened to the stream before I got here O_O)
![]() |
![]() I heared from a repeated Brazil traveller & record collector that decent vinyl is pretty rare in Brazil. Is that true? |
![]() |
![]() @fred: Ah! Winamp! I remember them. I haven't used them for ages because I only use VLC now. When I last used Winamp, its interface seemed a bit too I really hated the bad old days when you'd have to download every new codec. @doca: I hate corrupt people who steal parcels. I've only had one missing parcel in many many years and it was because the courier claimed it was signed for by a complete stranger and that's acceptable according to their own policy. |
![]() |
![]() You could Panda-suit-stuff do that in Cologne as well. we have a real lot of those "living statues" in the inner city. |
![]() |
![]() and then we gotta get ready for the Underwater Death Race 2013 |
![]() |
![]() Most parcels i miss get lost in the staircase. In the mid 90ies the entire mail to an certain adress in Kiev (Ujraine) got lost. Obviously the mailman expected to find money in the envelopes. |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:06am
nuno:
are you familiar with simentera, band from cape verde?
![]() |
![]() For the panda suit lovers: www.youtube.com... |
![]() |
![]() @Elwyn: a coworker had a parcel disappear that way, the courier claimed Igor Stravinsky had signed for it |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:08am
Andrew:
Tanzania=Tanganyika & something there was Basutoland too
Thu. 11/21/13 7:09am
Andrew:
ooh wow O_O love this first one from Uganda O_O
![]() |
![]() @Guido: vinyl wasn't good in the 70's and the 80's, but I guess the same happened in the US and in Europe. When vinyl was the thing to listen music to, music executives lowered its quality to make more of them at lower costs |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:12am
Andrew:
sorry, Rwanda ^_^ | |
![]() |
![]() @Spatulor: mail is actually good in Brazil, but the customs can be temperamental, to say the least of it. And any imports that costs more than 50 dollars are expected to receive a 40% tribute upon it, so the value doesn't only double because of the currency as it triples because of that. But this is is not an obligatory tribute, it's just something that may or not happen. |
![]() |
![]() @Andrew: there was Biafra too in the 70s |
![]() |
![]() Vinyl-quality German pressings: depends on. 60ies & early 70ies is all in all better. Late 70ies: EMI & WEA were OK. Polygram & BMG were only good in the first runs and afterwards crackling horribly. |
![]() |
![]() @fred: I'm still pretty angry and depressed about it because PayPal should have refunded me. I still haven't read the latest emails about my complaints because I've given up hope in a just outcome. @doca: Yikes! In Australia, they don't tax our important unless they cost $1000, I think. However, a few retailers want that lowered because Internet sales are so much cheaper than local retailers that the local retailers are struggling. |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:16am
Andrew:
just saw the bit about Winamp O_Q Used to love it, before it became bloated & slow. the Equaliser was really useful & milkdrop is a pretty good add on.
![]() |
![]() I always thought the oil crises of the 70s and 80s had something to do with shitty runs of records. those flimsy thin pressings you could make foley thunder with if you shook it.. |
![]() |
![]() @Andrew: I never understood why people cared about visualizations while listening to music. That might be because I normally listen to music while doing something else. And you know how back when we were all kids, we just read the liner notes. |
![]() |
![]() Elwyn - sometimes visualizers are needed: media.screened.com... |
![]() |
![]() @Dave B: Yeah but did that lead him to marry Madonna? |
![]() |
![]() Meghan and listeners, I'm heading off the comment board so I can really start my day. Good Africa to you all |
![]() |
![]() yup. Musta been some killer bud |
![]() |
![]() good africa to you too Doca! |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:26am
Andrew:
(just read Dave Bs comment) maybe you can get a days worth of African music? But then we wouldn't get to see you O_Q I have enough music on CD/record/tape to last some months I'm sure O_O I don't care too much about them either, as I also listen while doing other things (or reading/leaving comments here)
![]() |
![]() RCA-dynaflex were thin but pretty good. But in general 70ies-US-pressing don't have a good reputation. |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:26am
Andrew:
have a good one, doca ^_^
![]() |
![]() Some fun video about vinyl-packaging: www.youtube.com... (Do it the Geram way ... hehe) |
![]() |
![]() ... only typos from me. Have to continue working. But still enjoying the show. |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:33am
Andrew:
Loving this music from Rwanda ^_^
![]() |
![]() What year did this song come out? They have that overused voice tech! |
![]() |
![]() Andrew - I do have a few days of African stuff, but its just lumped as African. |
![]() |
![]() 2012 elwyn. If you like that, check out some contemporary stuff from Algeria and Tunisia. They are the auto tune masters |
![]() |
![]() I used to work for Deutsche Welle for a couple of years. They had the biggest collection of African music in Germany. When it startet with digitalising African stuff for broadcast from vinyl, one of the engineers almost went mad. "Entire LP-sides, one song and it sound s all the same!!! I cannot stnd it anymore!" |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:43am
Andrew:
rather have black rhinos than a boner O_O
Thu. 11/21/13 7:45am
Andrew:
or when you get back to the stall, you see someone else buying it O_Q
![]() |
![]() Sounds great, Meghan. |
![]() |
![]() It doesn't make things easier that they were the Dem. Rep. Congo until 1971 before becoming Zaire. |
Thu. 11/21/13 7:51am
Andrew:
thought it sounded Cuban...were they influenced by Cuban music there? or the other way round
![]() |
![]() Influenced by Cuba |
![]() |
![]() Wow, what a poster (Zaire 74)! |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:19am

![]() |
![]() awww, thanks JD! |
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:23am
JD:
And the poster art is equally great but, different kettle of fish alltogether |
![]() |
![]() So, does this include Congo-Brazzaville as well as Congo-Kinshasa (aka DR Congo). |
![]() |
![]() duh, the last poster posted! |
![]() |
![]() It's both..... It was hard to differentiate between the two |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:27am
KP:
I agree. | |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:28am
KP:

Thu. 11/21/13 8:46am

![]() |
![]() There is no way to be in a bad mood listening to African music. |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:54am
Marmalade Kitty:
love this by Amandine, Adia
Thu. 11/21/13 8:55am

![]() |
![]() great to start my stupid day with this great music! Thanks Meghan |
![]() |
![]() Joyous, Meghan, Thanks! If you made this a trip around the world, the song would never end! |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:59am
Andrew:
The worst part of the show...the end O_Q Thanks Meghan, another great African themed show! ^_^ Hey, it's not Thanksgiving here...so I can enjoy as per usual ^_^ Wish I could go to the record fair.
![]() |
Thu. 11/21/13 8:59am
JD:
time to listen to the archives |
![]() |
![]() It's too bad that millions of people would probably love this if they only got to hear it. They're stuck in the world of commercial radio. They don't know what they're missing. Nice work with the African musical tour. |
Wed. 11/27/13 11:32am
