The anticipation is building.

Happy Chewbacca / Happy Thanksgiving to those that celebrate
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 6:59am Guido (Cologne):

Thanks for the tip, Meghan!
As for the US-map, I might immeadiately find Texas, Florida, California, Alaska, Washington ... but ask me for NY, NJ, which one is Illinois, which is MS ...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:02am Meghan:

I love that almost no one has a hard time finding California or Texas!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:04am Chuck:

The bigger uniquely shaped stated are easier to find...
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:05am Dave B:

The home page of the African map thing had some other good ones. Nailed the manhattan neighborhood map right quick.

This track opened like a lost track from "fear of music/remain in light"

I like it!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:05am Chuck:

Oops... states....
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:05am Guido (Cologne):

Recognizable silhouettes.
That's it!
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:06am Dave B:

Shit, even Zira nailed the square peg/square hole test in "Escape"
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:07am Chuck:

That's why folks have a harder time with the rectangular shaped states. They all look kind of the same...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:08am Guido (Cologne):

I remember, it was a fun game asking Amercans to show Berlin during the cold war times. Is it GDR or FRG? Where the hell is the iron curtain?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:10am Sem Chumbo:

Good morning, Meghan and all. Seriously considering changing my name to Semba Ritmado.
Loving these sounds.
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:10am Dave B:

So I missed the past few breaks. Do we continue to share our Thursday mornings for another year?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:11am davex:

@Guido: That divide is still in the minds of many people in Germany, I'm afraid.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:11am Meghan:

Still in the same slot Dave! Good Morning Sem!
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:13am Dave B:

Now if THIS is the one you were thinking, you are CORRECT!

Buraka Som Sistema is cool!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:18am Chuck:

And just as fucking WRONG as other religions, Meghan...
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:18am Dave B:

@Guido: Hi, Guido, I'm trying to keep up a one translated lyric per day pace on the blog, it has been fun to do it. Today I'll upload a Raul Seixas translation.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:22am Guido (Cologne):

@doca : I have to check this!
I was about to send you my wish-list.
But that would become all too long!

Suffolk is in Yankeedom, though. Interesting choices.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:28am David L.B. is RRN63:

I subscribe to the Carl Jung / Joseph Campbell Comparative Religion/Mythology point of view. Everyone wants to think their Religion is the One True & historically Factual religion - but the more you look @ them, you see the similarities - & influences they had on each other. Campbell says we are, basically, the Storytelling Monkey - it's what we do - but @ this time of great Change, it will be awhile before we can get a Story together that makes sense for us...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:30am davex:

Meghan, lest I forget to mention again, great series - looking forward to revisiting it on the archives!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:30am Meghan:

awwww, thanks davex!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:30am Guido (Cologne):

@RRn63 I've read J.J.Frazer's Golden Brough, if it tells you something.
Maybe a bit dated and much too long.
But much more fun to see the Wicker Man movie (which i did quite recently).
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:31am Andrew:

there is definitely different areas of the US, like spanish/mexican, dutch, german, french, english.
here it's just all english O_O
apart from you know, the natives that were in both before...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:32am Guido (Cologne):

Let's call it "Meghan's African Theme Park"!
;-)
as for my taste, the series could go on and on and on.
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:33am Marmalade Kitty:

& convicts..
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:37am Dave B:

They're in Australia MK
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:38am Rob W:

Good morning dear listeners, good holiday (if it applies) and thanks Meghan for more African musical travels! I know we've moved on now... but hearing Bonga's classic reminded me that Meghan's old Bay State stomping grounds is a hot-spot for Lusophone African music thanks to the large Portuguese-speaking community. A few years back my better half Katie and I saw Bonga, an icon in Angola, perform at Restaurant Cesaria - an excellent Cape Verdean eatery in Dorchester MA. That's our US travel tip for the day...
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:39am Dave B:

I kinda wish archives were downloadable, but that's what audio hijack is for
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:40am Andrew:

well, the convicts were mostly english

another great show meghan ^_^
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:41am Andrew:

hyah, i was just thinking that Dave B, how it would be good to listen to these on my mp3 player, the whole show ^_^
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:42am Meghan:

Did you see my car that was stolen and found in Dorchester Rob? ha! If you go back up to MA, go to Lowell, there is a huge Cambodian community there.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:43am Rob W:

Dave B or Andrew (or anyone else), email me - robw AT wfmu DOT org or via wfmu.org... - if you wish, and I can give you some useful info regarding your musings about the archives.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:45am doca:

@Guido: Gil and Caetano's albums you're saying those from the sixties when they were at their most tropicália moment?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:47am Chuck:

HUH? 60s garage from Africa? Really, Meghan?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:48am Meghan:

Really Chuck..... this band was HUGE in Zambia. There is a box set out there of their stuff, check it out.
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:49am Andrew:

love this one!

they're so fantastic!
"Who the hell is Sgt. Pepper", i use to say.

Just went through the Veloso-Trilogy yesterday evening.
Glberto Gil's secont album is one of those 5-star++ ... best albums ever to be published in the world.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:53am doca:

@Guido: haha "White Album? You mean the one from Caetano Veloso?"
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:53am Rob W:

Ooh - sorry about the car Meghan! Believe it or not I've never made it to Lowell, though it is indeed Cambodian mecca for the east coast. However - we have been to Revere, MA (closer to Boston) where there is a strip of Cambodian restaurants and shops on Shirley Ave. We've enjoyed eating at Floating Rock restaurant there.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:54am doca:

The blog has been a way of getting to know better especially Gil and Caetano and the tropicália moment. I always listened to it from my parents, so it has always been something quite domestic and related to some artists which aren't usually considered the big geniuses, like Alceu Valença for instance. It has been cool to regain a taste for Brazilian music
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:55am Guido (Cologne):

"white Album" by Veloso, yes ...

Yeah, African garage rock.
Great track. Have to like this. which one was it?
  Thu. 11/28/13 7:55am Marmalade Kitty:

Zambian cheeze! :)
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:57am Guido (Cologne):

Of course you have the better insight, doca.
My dear Brazilian friend startet to listen to Tropicalia just because of me!
(she's more into motors and gardening, not music.)
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:58am doca:

@Guido: yes, she must get same feeling I have of being foreigner to your own tradition.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:58am doca:

@Guido: but motors?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 7:59am Guido (Cologne):

She comes out of a mechanics family.
Her brothers and cousins do car-racing.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:01am doca:

Really? What's her name or family name? I'm very into car racing, though I used to keep track of the Brazilian championships more earlier.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:02am doca:

I guess it's my most incoherent personality trait, because I don't drive, I don't like cars, nothing in my personal tastes indicates that I would like racing, and still I do. Blame it on a F1 and IndyCar dad
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:02am Guido (Cologne):

@Meghan: Wich one was the "garage"-track.
have to "Like" it!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:04am davex:

Interesting track (Burundi Black)!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:04am Meghan:

Which one was WITCH! ha!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:05am Chuck:

You could have turned that into an Abbott and Costello routine, Meghan... hehe...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:06am Chuck:

Is "We Intend to Cause Havoc!" the comp title?
  Thu. 11/28/13 8:06am Andrew:

love this burundi black song

good thing you didn't forget burundi this time ^_^
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:07am Meghan:

That is the one Chuck!
  Thu. 11/28/13 8:07am Marmalade Kitty:

Something about Burundi Black makes me think o Madness..The piano?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:08am Guido (Cologne):

@doca
family name is Ramon.
Out of Curitiba-area. Her cousin#s name is Wison Ramon.
It's a special kind of racing. Modified cars slipping over wet ground.
Don't know what it is called.

Hello Meghan. Great work on the African theme.
Give the Drummers some. Go see them if you ever get the chance.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:11am David L.B. is RRN63:

- of course - that Burundi sort of double or multiple (?) drum sound was influential on Malcolm McLaren-related artists like BowWowWow & AdamAnt...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:11am Guido (Cologne):

Thank you Meghan!
Great pun fitting my typos.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:13am Brian in UK:

Stay away from Burundi Steiphenson Black. Real World released a solid album.
  Thu. 11/28/13 8:13am Andrew:

so many good/great F1 drivers from Brazil O_O
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:15am doca:

@Guido: don't know it either, but sounds kinda crazy/wild thing.
  Thu. 11/28/13 8:16am Dave B:

I've been conscripted to help my sister out. Headphones on. Happy thanksgiving everyone
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:16am doca:

@Andrew: yes, it makes me proud in a certain way, and in Indy too, but as other aspects of Brazilian sports, motor racing is also going backwards or almost killed.
Anyway, I always end up talking mostly about bad things in Brazil, so I guess I'll shut up about it here eheh
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:18am David L.B. is RRN63:

- driving on wet ground - it'd be good skills for driving in a New England Winter !...
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:18am Guido (Cologne):

@doca it is crazy/wild/dangerous.
Her cousin was in hospital several times with serious injuries.
Her brother so to say lives in an mechanics workshop. One fridge, one bed, one TV, the rest is car-parts and stuff. Crazy family. Her father was innovator in car-heating.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:19am doca:

It's Speed Racer's family...

cya next time Dave B, have a good one ^_^
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:21am Guido (Cologne):

... really! they are! Completely in love with motors!
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:26am doca:

Guido, do you know Itamar Assumpção, Luiz Tatit, Arrigo Barnabé and others, those guys in the so-called "Paulistan vanguard" in the 80's? It's a bunch of guys experimenting in the same way as in tropicália. I was thinking about translating something of it just to call attention to it
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:29am hamburger:

heyo - tuning in late.. guessing the surprise being.. an AFRICAN RUSH COVER BAND!?
  Thu. 11/28/13 8:30am Dave B:

That African metal band?
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:31am Meghan:

ha! Hamburger, if I had found an African RUSH cover band, that would totally have been played! hahaha

Dave, I totally forgot about the metal band. I think they were from Angola
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:32am davex:

Interesting traditional track - sounds like a Middle Eastern influence.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:32am Guido (Cologne):

@doca:
maybe it's an idea even to write about the artists and give tips what exactly is worth listening. Not fimilar with any of the names. For sure they deserve attention. Who would expect, Brazil dried out after forst wave of Tropicalists? I have a few insights from DJ-mix-tapes, but these mix-tapes were made for the dancefloor.

@Dave: great articles you posted there.
@Guido: Good idea to write about it. Brazil has not dried in the 80's, but unfortunately I'm not much into what's going on right now. But those guys are worth checking out, especially Itamar Assumpção.

Wild turkeys, once eliminated in Massachusetts, are flourishing from Plymouth to Concord and - to the surprise of some wildlife officials - making forays into densely populated suburban and urban areas, including parts of Boston, Cambridge and, most recently, Brookline.
Avatar Thu. 11/28/13 8:51am doca:

A friend of mine in Minas Gerais always complained that the metal band he played (they opened for Bling Guardian in Belo Horizonte) lacked "local colour". Their release used to say the band was created in a freezing night in Governador Valadares (their hometown), but in Valadares is always warm as an oven.

looking at your blog doca, it's some good work. Will look properly after the show ^_^

Siti binti Saad was a nice song, seems old, 1930? but her voice didn't sound 'old' style
