Irwin killed my nephew.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:27pm Matt from Springfield:

You should drive around VA after it snows; in fact once the black asphalt roads are melted, I shovel sidewalk ice and snow onto the road during a sunny day. It absorbs heat and melts it quicker, especially as cars drive over. As long as you do it before 3 p.m. it won't re-freeze during the night.

Wed. 1/5/11 3:36pm Matt from Springfield:

@L&A: WTF?
Wed. 1/5/11 3:38pm Denise in DC:

Now *that* was bizarre -- I came back to my office just now to find the player looping the Petula Clark tune that closed Kurt's show.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:39pm Flyover Wack Job:

@Matt@L&A: WTF? -- 4:20 ain't that far off...

(Triple point internet scrabble score for the double @ )
Wed. 1/5/11 3:41pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: Wow, how long was the loop? Like a CD skip, a longer record skip, or a coherent 2 sec or more segment, looped over again?
Wed. 1/5/11 3:41pm Denise in DC:

Damn, I wish I had this volume of the Archives. I don't own any of Wooshie's oeuvre.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:42pm Parq:

God, I never noticed before, but Wooshie Spkamoto sounds a bit like Ian Curtis.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:42pm AnAnonymousParty:

In this state you can get arrested for loving like that.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:43pm Dick Clark:

What'th inc'rrect about thish?
Wed. 1/5/11 3:44pm Denise in DC:

@Matt: it was several minutes' worth of the song -- enough that I got confused, thinking that Irwin was playing it also. Then it bumped back to a point in the beginning of the song and played two or three minutes again.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:45pm Matt from Springfield:

Dick, the brain's a delicate machine--none of us are really that far off from that point. All it takes is one accident and a few millimeters of brain, so watch yourself.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:46pm Denise in DC:

And now, for something completely different: I was researching organizations to which I could contribute through the Combined Federal Campaign and came across this worthy group: http://www.christianbowhunters.org/
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:48pm Dead Corporate I's:

haha! Denise...John 3;16 superimposed over a picture of a guy stretching his bow!
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:48pm Parq:

'Nise, go for it. You'll get the deduction *and* you'll get into Heaven.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:50pm glenn:

you could contribute to my organization - glenn for supreme leader of the universe.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:51pm Denise in DC:

Please note that Independent Charities of America has named the Christian Bowhunters one of America's Best Charities.

I thought Irwin needed to know about it immediately.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:51pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: Interesting loop, I've had a similar problem with other streams, usually if it has trouble after a minute, it will repeat that minute or so.

Well, CBHA is a "non-denominational ministry to the bow hunting world." Why should bow hunters be bound to denoms, or stay away from non-denoms? And what better way for a Christian to stay on the "straight and narrow"!!! Actually the path curves, but, y'know...
Wed. 1/5/11 3:53pm Dead Corporate Ryes:

what about the Hindu bowhunters? don't you feel that they feel a bit left out?
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:54pm Hindu Bowhunters:

Beef. It's what's not for dinner.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:54pm trs:

Good sounds Irwin. Irwin sounds good.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:54pm Matt from Springfield:

Denise, what Dept are you in? I'm a contractor so I don't have the CFC.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:55pm Denise in DC:

DCR, I suspect the Christian Bowhunters would be happy to evangelize the Hindu Bowhunters, to bring them to Jesus.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:55pm Denise in DC:

DOL, Matt. Which contractor are you with?
Wed. 1/5/11 3:56pm Matt from Springfield:

What about Buddhist bowhunters? They would never shoot at animals, and instead meditate on the motion of a arrow firing.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:56pm Dead Corporate Lies:

ooh ooh look who's coming up
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:56pm jewish bowhunters:

we use bagels for target practise.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:57pm Matt from Springfield:

ManTech--sitting in a VA SCIF doing maps and geospatial database work. Do you work for the BLS? Better still, do you run the Inflation Calculator? I LOVE THAT!!
Wed. 1/5/11 3:58pm Dead Corporate Ties:

put a little schmear on the tip of that arrow before you aim
Wed. 1/5/11 3:58pm Denise in DC:

Noooo, no connection to statistics. I would have had a meltdown within the first 15 minutes of a job like that.
Wed. 1/5/11 3:58pm Prissy the Hen:

I don't taste just like chicken.
  Wed. 1/5/11 3:59pm ted nugent:

what's up dudes?
Wed. 1/5/11 3:59pm Denise in DC:

@Matt, what you do sounds interesting.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:00pm Matt from Springfield:

Hickety Prissety, Mimi's black hen.

Now THAT'S what I call steampunk!
Wed. 1/5/11 4:02pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: I'm a cartographer doing [6 paragraphs redacted] stuff for the Army. 95% of cartography now is computer based, GIS. So I end up screaming at dysfunctional computers much of my day! How 'bout yourself?
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:02pm drewo:

2011: The Year Steampunk Broke
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:04pm Ron Clanky:

I'm getting into the bath, friends.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:04pm trs:

I did GIS stuff for the environment at one time. It disturbed the hell out of me how much more data/detail military got and weren't available to environment studies involving water quality and wetlands. "What Assholes," I thought.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:05pm Ron Clanky:

perfect temp.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:07pm Matt from Springfield:

To outside-DC commenters: We talk in DC-acronym-speak not to confuse you all, but because we DESPISE you!

If you wish to complain about this, please mail a EO complaint form 09-196b(3) to PO Box 666, Washington DC 20005. We will laugh at your form for 28 days, then inform you we don't have the jurisdiction to handle your complaint. Enjoy!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:08pm trs:

What Assholes!
Wed. 1/5/11 4:09pm Matt from Springfield:

@trs: All right! Didn't know you were a GISer! Do you still use that?

The Army Corps of Engineers is a big organization that conducts all kinds of studies, domestic as well as foreign, but really doesn't release much of it, despite that they aren't actively working much of it and don't have the manpower to do so.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:10pm Jimmy Buffet:

I wrote a song about assholes.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:11pm Matt from Springfield:

The WaPo has been on their case for years. I actually have a bunch of [foreign] hydrologic and other data from them on our servers, but obviously I can't just email forbidden fruit. So, here's to the assholes! Not just USACE but a HEAP of orgs are FAR, FAR worse in that field...
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:11pm Ron Clanky:

do you gys use barsoap or liqid?
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:11pm OM:

El Wiki says Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer who was the first to reach Tasmania and New Zealand.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:12pm trs:

Nope. Not as such. No.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:13pm Matt from Springfield:

@OM: THAT'S the play on words! The "Able" Tasmans!
@Ron: Bar soap, with washcloths I wash and bleach every other week or so.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:13pm Lungs and Ass:

Fletch hurts snow ---and bird evidence is crunch grown
Wed. 1/5/11 4:14pm Matt from Springfield:

@trs: Different job, or did ArcGIS drive ya nuts?
@Irwin: Evil store? Do you get coupons in the Sunday sales papers for the Evil Store? Or a website to order and redeem discount codes?
Wed. 1/5/11 4:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Great jazz riffs, really enjoying this!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:23pm Parq:

Oh man, this Silver is nice!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:24pm mark:

Listening from ireland on my new internet radio - great programme - how about another phil lynott? 'old town'?
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:27pm Aharon:

I never know why your playlists work, but they do.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:32pm Irwin:

Absence of server malfunction.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:32pm Government worker:

Unionized civil servants are the new Worst People In America. It's in the New York Times, so it has to be true.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:33pm Server:

I gotta pee.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:33pm Pee-er:

I gotta serve.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:34pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, songbird Leona Rose! A welcome addition to your mellifluous playlists!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:34pm Laura L:

There can be no mistake about it, Leona is in love!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:37pm Host:

I gotta serve the peas.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:37pm Wooshie:

I blame it all on Leona.
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:40pm Carmichael:

Well I'll be a suck-egg mule ... Howdy Irwin and all you frequent flyers. Amanda and Stereolab in the same show. I'm so happy I could spontaneously combust.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:44pm Matt from Springfield:

Bartender, a Flamin' Carmichael please! What, you never heard of it? Mix Amanda and Stereolab and a chemical reaction should cause a flame to break out.
Wed. 1/5/11 4:52pm Matt from Springfield:

There's still an hour left to go but I gotta hand it to you Irwin, the music selections this show have already been out of this world!

(sneer) But keep it up, or else I'll have to retract this early praise!...Nah, Kelly De Martino is good enough for the rest of this fine program!
  Wed. 1/5/11 4:56pm glenn:

thanks irwin - the hidden cameras are awesome. mississauga, not so much.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:06pm Matt from Springfield:

Jan AND/OR Lorraine!
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:07pm ScottC:

King 'O tha Dollar Bin!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:14pm Richard from Venezuela:

Hi friends.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:16pm Matt from Springfield:

Hi Richard -- did you just arrive? I highly recommend the first 2 hours of the show for later!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:18pm Richard from Venezuela:

I saw the play list. The Bad Plus song, I miss it.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:20pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh well, at least you made it for this AWESOME Syd Barrett mash up!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:22pm Richard from Venezuela:

I saw last night a documentary about pink floyd. Syd, a true genius.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:23pm Matt from Springfield:

Oh hell yes Bud! See ladies, it is proper of me to grease my hair with 10 pounds of lard before a date! And like Ol' Dan Tucker I think I'll wash my face in a frying pan!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:25pm Matt from Springfield:

@Richard: Was that the Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story? I bought that shortly BEFORE Syd died, it was a marvelous glimpse of Syd and his effect on Pink Floyd long after he departed.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:27pm glenn:

clem cattini played with both johnny kidd and chris spedding
Wed. 1/5/11 5:29pm Matt from Springfield:

Now this is a great Phil Ochs. Despite production maybe a bit excessive for Phil, it does complement him well.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:30pm Richard from Venezuela:

The avantgarde side of PF is all because of Syd. Dark side of the moon has their music shadow. He was the soul of PF in my opinion.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:30pm Richard from Venezuela:

Phil Ochs. An underrated singer-songwriter
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:31pm matt:

this song is craptacular....
Wed. 1/5/11 5:31pm Denise in DC:

I actually stopped dead in the middle of typing a sentence because I realized, "This is Phil Ochs!" I don't know this song, and am very happy to hear it.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:31pm ScottC:

Oh gawd! if I was in the CIA I'd want him dead too!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:32pm Matt from Springfield:

Slogan nomination: "You, Sir, ought to take an excursion to Hell, and remain there henceforth!"
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:33pm ScottC:

scheeesh!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:34pm Matt from Springfield:

@ScottC: You already said that before! And personally, this one wasn't nearly as bad as "The Crucifixion".
Wed. 1/5/11 5:34pm Denise in DC:

And Matt: sorry I didn't answer your question earlier -- I was actually (gasp) *working.* I do civil rights policy.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:36pm Lizardner Dave:

Someone should do a mash up of Phil Ochs and GG Allin. Wait a minute, no they shouldn't.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:37pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: Well done! Everyone enjoys not being harassed for who they are.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:37pm Parq:

For my money, the solo "Crucifixion" on one of the live Ochs albums (included in a 2-LP compilation ca. 1979) has it all over the vaguely creepy orchestrated version.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:39pm frenchee:

As Professor Irwin instructed, I started doing my homework re: Bruz Fletcher. He's a Hoosier! One of THE Fletchers, dontcha know. I Fletcher National Bank...holy crap, I can't believe this hasn't been made into a movie or at least a Charles Ludlam play.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:40pm Matt from Springfield:

@Denise: Glad you came back, I was going to tell you of an idea: there are several reports (classified and open source) I read produced by the government with really obvious conclusions ("A lot of development money given to Iraq has disappeared", "Kim Jong Il is REALLY crazy", etc). I was thinking of moving all those people into one central dept--D.U.H., the Department of Duh. Leaving everyone else to do more serious thinking!
Wed. 1/5/11 5:42pm Matt from Springfield:

@Parq: I agree--I haven't heard the live one yet, but the lyrics and Phil's voice are quite powerful. I'm sure they would stand on their own strongly.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:43pm glenn:

as it happens, jan and lorraine recorded a song by a guy i know, named richard "papa k" keelan. http://time-has-told-me.blogspot.com/2006/10/jan-lorraine-gypsy-people-uk-folk.html
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:44pm megabro:

partch r-r-r-remixx
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:50pm Corwood:

He sells off my back catalogue for charity, then plays cuts from my tribute album. He's loonier than I am.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:50pm Syd:

Got to keep the loonies on the path.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:53pm Roger:

No Syd, I said that when we went downhill, remember?
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:54pm Syd:

You're nuts, dude.

Did the paperboy bring more today?
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:55pm FCC:

Mr. Chusid, we believe that this Mr. Carter you are playing intends a double meaning in his firearm references. You're on thin ice, buddy.
Wed. 1/5/11 5:55pm Matt from Springfield:

@Syd: The paperboy brings more to me everyday.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:56pm Mrs, Carter:

My oh my oh my!
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:56pm AnAnonymousParty:

Didn't Frank Sinatra cover 'Ram Rod Daddy'?
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:57pm Alan Parsons:

Now now boys, do try to get along.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:57pm glenn:

harry partch, bo carter and sinat in one set. yowzah.
  Wed. 1/5/11 5:57pm David:

Was that downhill into the dark side ?
Wed. 1/5/11 5:58pm Matt from Springfield:

How classy of you to end with Frank again, Irwin. It's like a smooth, fine cognac to wash down our sugary dessert! Thanks for another great show!

@AAP: Psst! Stay tuned for next week!
Thu. 1/6/11 8:37am listener monica sparrow:

i never listened to linkin park. it sounded very um vervish. i didn't know if i liked it, because it was so seductive in that shoegaze stoned way. irwin, i have been listening to fmu for 40 years and your show has elevated to my #1. always happy to have radio on and find you there.
