Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - August 18, 2009

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:06pm From: Danne D

Yay it's funk time!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:08pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

How 'bout Dutch rock for $200--some Gruppo Sportivo perhaps?

Tue. 8/18/09 11:16pm From: efd

Michael, not a bad suggestion but not feasible at the moment. Maybe some "beep beep love" will come your way next week.

Hi, Danne!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:19pm From: E.L.

Very excited to be listening in live from the beginning tonight.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:19pm From: Laurie

You're obviously going to play "Get Metsmerized, y/y??

Tue. 8/18/09 11:21pm From: Michael from the Left Coast

One listen to Timmy Thomas records dispels the notion that drum machines aren't funky

Tue. 8/18/09 11:22pm From: Danne D

Yeah things are getting wacky. Last week we had Ted Leo on Evan's show and this week we have baseball talk on Tom's show!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:23pm From: Amanda

What's up, dudes. Was just Gchatting with a friend and we agreed how great this set was... sorry I ever betrayed the playlist for Gmail, though. E.L., I'm glad you made it too, since I need to go to bed soon!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:25pm From: Danne D

Hiya Amanda :) Hello other Funk Friends as well!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:28pm From: john

Hey everyone....great opening set, Evan! But gosh, baseball talk earlier? Almost enough to make me listen.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:28pm From: deaconlight

who man, who did that song originally. It wasn't April Wine.. uh...

Tue. 8/18/09 11:29pm From: Danne D

Aw man, homework! :(

Tue. 8/18/09 11:30pm From: Danne D

(sad reality: Danne D actually working from home right now while he listens)

Tue. 8/18/09 11:31pm From: deaconlight

Yeah it was April Wine.1971 - So April Wine covered the Hot Chocolate song? dang, I never knew that.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:31pm From: Amanda

I love that April Wine version AND I OWN THE 45 so I'm wondering if I can get extra credit.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:32pm From: Danne D

Amanda, ever the teacher's pet. *kicks rock*

Tue. 8/18/09 11:32pm From: E.L.

Thanks, teach!

Hey Amanda. Can't wait to chat! <-- Everything went great!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:33pm From: deaconlight

Man I always called him Herman BROOOD. I have two of his albums on vinyl. The things we learn listening to Evan!!!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:34pm From: deaconlight

yeah per Mike form Left Coast how about some Gruppo Sportivo! http://deaconlight.com/music/records/1979/grupposportivo_mistakes.html

Tue. 8/18/09 11:35pm From: Amanda

"Brood" in Dutch means "Bread." That I know for sure, though I can't always roll my R the right way, and I see little connection between Herman Brood and the band Bread.

E.L.!!!! Tell everyone what happened! Will you??? Please???

Tue. 8/18/09 11:36pm From: Danne D

I'm like the D-minus student in the Funkiversity hoping I don't flunk out <<<<<<:(

Tue. 8/18/09 11:37pm From: Amanda

Perhaps you will FUNK out

Tue. 8/18/09 11:37pm From: E.L.

Me = Married.

I'm sorting photos while listening to this sweet R. Pollard track.

Yay!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:38pm From: Sybil

Mazal tov, E.L.!

I'm sick :(

Tue. 8/18/09 11:39pm From: Danne D

lol Amanda :)

Congrats E.L.!

Hope you feel better soon Sybil :( :( :(

Tue. 8/18/09 11:40pm From: Sybil

One reason to love Herman Brood: he named his band after a Mose Allison song.

Thanks for the wishes, Danne. I'm going to go collapse on my bed again.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:41pm From: efd

E.L., congratulations!!

actually, pretty much ditto to what Danne just posted.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:41pm From: E.L.

Sybil,

Thank you AND I'm sorry. I'm hoping knowledge of my wedding has not caused this condition. Like a gag reflex. I'm sure that's not what you meant.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:43pm From: Amanda

Million billion gazillion congrats to E.L. and Ann yaaaaaaaaaayyyyy. I hope you let us know which EFD-inspired songs you played at your reception.

Sybil, feel better! There is a nasty summer cold going around, looks like you gots it.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:43pm From: Sybil

Not at all, E.L.... I just wouldn't work up the energy to post two separate comments.

Goldurned arithmetic.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:45pm From: Danne D

Sybil needs some soul stew, that oughta make her feel better :)

Tue. 8/18/09 11:45pm From: E.L.

Summer colds are the worst colds. Hang in there! We all feel for you.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:49pm From: Sybil

Thanks, all. And thanks to efd for "music to gargle salt water by"!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:54pm From: kateandshake

Oh darn, I fell asleep. I had a question for Patton Oswalt.

Tue. 8/18/09 11:55pm From: DJ Terre T

Heya Evs, thanx fer mentioning the IMPEDIMENTS and BUZZER live sets on my show this coming Saturday! It should be soooo good and i'm psyched!
Also AWESOME show so far tonite!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:55pm From: batgpenetar

There's a bloke watching TV, and he hears a knock at the door. When he answers, there's no one to be seen! Just as he's about to close the door, he hears a small voice say "Excuse me sir, could I interest you in a set of encyclopaedias?" He looks down and sees a snail on his doorstep. Angered at being dragged away from the NSW v Qld State of Origin Match on the tube by a snail selling encyclopaedias, he kicks the poor snail off his front steps and into the garden, before returning inside. Six months later, there's a knock at the door. When he answers, there's no one there again. He looks down and sees the snail, who asks "What did you do that for?"

Tue. 8/18/09 11:56pm From: Danne D

Woohoo Hiya Terre T!

Tue. 8/18/09 11:58pm From: Amanda

That is probably the best snail joke. All the elephant jokes I can think of are WAY too blue for this crowd.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:00am From: efd

never gets old, batgpenetar.

TT, you're welcome!

kateandshake, I'm afraid Patton's helicopter picked him up some time ago.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:00am From: Terre T

Word Up Danne D!!

Wed. 8/19/09 12:00am From: E.L.

I've always liked duck jokes. I guess we all have our comedy spirit animal.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:00am From: Danne D

Yeah you got impressionable youngin's like me here!

E.L. - Got any grapes?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:02am From: E.L.

Danne D,

Seriously: DO I KNOW YOU?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:03am From: Danne D

Nopers, I don't think you know me. I was just alluding to the one duck joke I know...

Wed. 8/19/09 12:06am From: Laurie

It's not Evans in the News?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:07am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Damn you Deaconlight--pointing me to that page about 1979 albums--now I'll be looking at that all night!

Wed. 8/19/09 12:07am From: E.L.

That joke and I have a long history— a long, boring history.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:08am From: Terre T

How the hell does Evan do all this (DJ, Acu-playlist, tix and gig announcemnts) without an Ass Prod*?

*Thats ASSociate PRODucer, ya pervs

Wed. 8/19/09 12:12am From: Michael from the Left Coast

EFD--what label released this Felix record?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:12am From: Danne D

Evan is Multi-Funktional :)

Wed. 8/19/09 12:14am From: Joshua K

I came here to dance?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:14am From: Amanda

All will be revealed on the playlist soon enuff.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:15am From: E.L.

Actually, DJ Terre T, until I read the final sentence of your post I thought Ass Prod = Ipod. So I guess I'm sort of proud to be stupid and not a perv. Yay.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:17am From: Kelly

ass prod...iPod, all the same kinda

Wed. 8/19/09 12:17am From: Danne D

Haven't you heard, E.L.? That's the latest app available for the I-phone...

Wed. 8/19/09 12:18am From: Amanda

But E.L., you're a cartoonist! You must be the perviest of all of us! <--Callback to a joke from like a year ago

Wed. 8/19/09 12:18am From: The Numero Group

Hi Evan, glad you are digging the Pisces record. Thanks for the support!

Wed. 8/19/09 12:23am From: E.L.

Amanda, all I can do is try. Until Larry opens his perv college, I'm out of luck.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:23am From: efd

my pleasure, Numero Group! Nice to have you here.

Laurie, thanks for the Evans In The News reference.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:26am From: Danne D

I'd probably have better grades at the Perviversity than at the Funkiversity, sadly.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:26am From: Danne D

Rowland Evans' old partner Bob Novak died today. That's sorta tangential Evans in the News.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:27am From: efd

quite a stretch, Danne.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:28am From: E.L.

You should have gone for the double major, Danne.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:29am From: Danne D

Wow, Tell Me When It's Over :)

Wed. 8/19/09 12:31am From: Danne D

Saw Steve Wynn join my friend's band (Elk City) on stage during one of their shows as they were covering a Dream Syndicate song during their set on their tour. One of my favorite concert moments ever seeing my friend Renee get to play with one of her heroes. :)

Wed. 8/19/09 12:33am From: Tim K

Awesome show, Evan! It's rare that I get to tune in live, but tonight was a nice exception.

Hey - has WFMU gotten the new Drug Rug record yet? Not sure if their label Black & Greene is doing much in the radio promo department, but it's worth checking out. Gotta give props to my Boston peeps...

At any rate, keep rocking!

Wed. 8/19/09 12:34am From: Danne D

(show was at the Mercury Lounge some years back)

Wed. 8/19/09 12:41am From: Danne D

That guitar part on this song is cool, sounds sorta like a dolphin in that one part.

Wed. 8/19/09 12:43am From: Michael from the Left Coast

EFD--No Harry Harrison tonight?

Wed. 8/19/09 12:47am From: efd

Michael, funny you mention that - I know I'm overdue for some "In" Sound, and I quickly grabbed one of the LPs but it turns out I've already played all of the episodes on it! Next week for sure.

Wed. 8/19/09 1:03am From: Danne D

I creeped within 10 points of the 'Goober in the Happy How Do You Do Baseball Standings with CC's win, but hope is starting to fade...

Wed. 8/19/09 1:04am From: efd

for some of us, hope faded a long long time ago.

Wed. 8/19/09 1:06am From: Danne D

Yeah I'm amazed my team's gone as well as it has. It's been very fun, Evan, and I'm glad you put the invite out to your listeners :D

Wed. 8/19/09 1:06am From: Brian

I remember hearing and loving that Sharon Tandy song on WFMU some years back. Still grabs me. Keep it rolling!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:11am From: Danne D

Signing off the board for the night but will keep the tunes going until 2. Have a good night Funk Faithful!!!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:12am From: john

Sadly, my hope is off having a beer with Evan's...good luck, Danne!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:12am From: efd

goodnight, Danne!

and hi Brian! Congrats on Open Ed '09!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:17am From: Sybil

There was once a snail that was sick and tired of his reputation for being so slow. He decided to get some fast wheels to make up the difference. After shopping around a while, he decided that the Datson 240Z was the car to get. So the snail goes to the nearest Datsun dealer and says he wants to buy the 240Z, but he wants it repainted to read 240-S

The dealer asks, "Why?"

The snail replies, "S’ stands for snail. I want everybody who sees me roaring past to know who's driving."

Well, the dealer doesn't want to lose the unique opportunity to sell a car to a snail, so he agrees to have the car repainted for a small fee.

The snail gets his new car and spent the rest of his days roaring happily down the highway at top speed. And whenever anyone would see him zooming by they'd say "Wow! Look at that S-car go!"

(I had to use all my google skilz to retrieve this half-remembered shaggy dog tale from the interwebs. Now I wonder if it was worth it. Well, I'm not good for much else at the moment. ;P)

Wed. 8/19/09 1:21am From: efd

i say it was worth it! thanks Sybil, and I hope you're feeling better soon!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:38am From: Sybil

"froy-lines" is correct. Danged if I know why. German.

Wed. 8/19/09 1:40am From: efd

should have trusted my instincts!

Wed. 8/19/09 1:41am From: Sybil

Actually, come to think of it (not that I can think right now), "frauleins" is probably not the right word for the plural in German anyway.

I hope someone who knows what they're talking about chimes in about now.

Wed. 8/19/09 1:49am From: Brian

OpenEd 09 got some serious surplus WFMU mojo. Sorry not to reply sooner, was walking the dog and listening via the FetishPhone... Absolutely killer, one track after another... and I even missed the new Pollard earlier.

Thu. 8/20/09 10:37am From: Mister Ray

Evan, regarding the Crucials album title...it's a line from "Teen Wolf."
