Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - August 11, 2009

Wednesdays 9pm - Midnight on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

August 11, 2009: Mink DeVille tribute, with guests Ben Edmonds AND Ted Leo! Plus, the best Midnight Ticket Oasis ever.
Willy DeVille, leader of the band Mink DeVille and a critically acclaimed solo artist, died late last week of pancreatic cancer. While they wouldn't be considered a "punk" band today, Mink DeVille were regulars at CBGB in the early/mid-'70s, alongside the Ramones, Television and Talking Heads. Ben Edmonds, a former editor for Creem, signed the band to Capitol Records in 1976 and subsequently paired them with legendary producer/arranger Jack Nitzsche. Ben shares his memories of Willy and provides his unique perspective on how a soul-blues-roots-Latin band fit in -- and didn't -- with the dawn of the NYC punk rock scene.
PLUS, as if that weren't enough, the wonderful Ted Leo pops in to perform a heartfelt version of Mink DeVille's "Let Me Dream If I Want To."

best Midnight TIcket Oasis ever. Hi Danne!

Wed. 8/12/09 12:22am randy in NC:

EFD- To continue from last week, I thought the live version Mitch Easter did of Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' was hotter than either his recorded version or the original IMHO...

Wed. 8/12/09 12:24am KC:

Thank the gods for archives. Friends wouldn't shut up during Willy's set! This is a great show, keep it up.

Wed. 8/12/09 12:28am Danne D:

Outsets!

Wed. 8/12/09 12:51am randy in NC:

Vinny played with the early Feelies and with Richard Lloyd among others...

Wed. 8/12/09 12:52am Danne D:

So Evan, I'm starting to feel like my Barre K's are the Red Sox to Ubergoober's Yankees this year. *sigh*

Wed. 8/12/09 12:54am Danne D:

Wed. 8/12/09 1:00am Danne D:

Stingy - alas I just gotta pre myself. No FMU app for that I'm sure

Wed. 8/12/09 1:01am randy in NC:

This Bare Wires has to be on a top ten of the year list, right?

Wed. 8/12/09 1:02am efd:

Randy, absolutely. Pretty sure it's currently the single of the year, we'll see if anything topples it between now and December

Wed. 8/12/09 1:08am Sybil:

So, because I'm drifting off...

Thanks for the great Willy deVille tribute, efd! (And the great Ted Leo cover, and the best Midnight Ticket Oasis reading EVAR!)

I'll be listening as I fall asleep but I'm too tired to stay upright.

Night, all!

Wed. 8/12/09 1:09am Danne D:

G'night Sybil - sweet dreams :)

Wed. 8/12/09 1:11am Danne D:

I bet a Funk family picnic would be a real blast :)

Wed. 8/12/09 1:15am Danne D:

A band that plays both King Crimson and Grand Funk - pretty impressive range :)

Wed. 8/12/09 1:17am Pete:

EFD;

You can get the Bare Wires record @

http://www.tictactotally.com/

Unfortunatly, only vinyl (this is starting to make me mad) It's 13 bucks which may be cheaper than emusic but at least you will have the record

Wed. 8/12/09 1:17am MD:

Aw crap. RIP MINK. And I'm just tuning in. Couldya one more Mink D play? Thanks amililon !

Wed. 8/12/09 1:19am MD:

Did you buy this Leroy Stevens at Dope Jams, any chance?

Wed. 8/12/09 1:22am efd:

MD, it's the station's copy so I'm not sure where it came from - might have been sent as a promo.

maybe i'll spin one last MInk track to end the show.

Wed. 8/12/09 1:22am Danne D:

That Leroy Stevens reminds of those old Rock Station contests where they'd mash up like 10 snippets of a song real fast and if you could name them all you'd win like $10,000

Wed. 8/12/09 1:41am Rarus Avis:

Follow Wire with The Bachs?

Wed. 8/12/09 1:42am Rarus Avis:

Or, Willy Nelson?

Wed. 8/12/09 1:43am efd:

i was thinking miss kittin & the hacker

Wed. 8/12/09 1:47am Rarus Avis:

Works for me. It's definitely your show. Thank you for good a good experience. Or, following Miss Kitten, Discrete Encounter. Ears just wandering.

Wed. 8/12/09 1:51am MD:

Ah, so good of you to play more Mink (time permitting of course.. and unfortunately as these RIPs relentlessly teach, Time doth little permit..).
Now re: Leroy Stevens, I found that same scream record at Dope Jams over weekend, thought you were mining the same vein. (NB scream collectors, they had a few more copies in stock I believe..

Wed. 8/12/09 1:57am Danne D:

Night, everyone. Another great show, EFD!

Wed. 8/12/09 1:58am efd:

thanks Danne and all - this one was special. see you all next week.

Fri. 8/14/09 4:52am chuck:
