Morning Jeff. | Yes, things are much clearer now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Howdy, @Rock Ridge Chess Club!
Good morning, @TDK60!
Avatar 9:11am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Hi, all! So much for napping before my extend-o show today! Hoo-ray for William!! Woo-hoo-ray for Jeff!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Jeff Golick:

@Stork! I will mention this later, too, but y'all should know that it's also Max Roach's birthday, and Stork has cooked up a fitting feast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am fred:

Good morning Jeff and all. And I agree, it's nice to hear a celebration of someone who's still alive
Avatar 9:14am Listener Gregory:

Don’t celebrate me then, cuz I’m not sure I qualify.
  9:15am Artie:

Good morning, Outies! So looking forward to today’s show.

The Rick Lopez sessionography page for William Parker was very helpful in putting this show together, and is itself a remarkable achievement: www.bb10k.com...
Avatar 9:23am hyde:

dang, i might need this recording
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

Are you physical formats-only, @hyde, or are you also fine with digital?
Avatar 9:26am hyde:

i swing both ways!
Avatar 9:27am hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

Hiya, @Mx. Granny!
Hello (& sorry about the earbuds), @northguineahills! At least you still have your ears (right?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Mx. Granny (e/em):

yeh, don't earbuds blossom into ears?
Avatar 9:48am Listener Gregory:

Sounds a bit Song-for-Che-ish.
Avatar 9:49am northguineahills:

Gotta walk to a store and get some new ones. A little exercise is healthy, anyways....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Jeff Golick:

I hear that, @LG. I was wondering what Parker thinks of Haden.
  10:03am Linda Lee:

love hearing you today, Jeff! good morning!
  10:06am Linda Lee:

let's have self indulgent! please! self indulgent made FM radio great.

@northguineahills: you have stores open where you are? We are locked-down but good here in Deutschland.

"Arrayed?" Or "a raid"?
  10:19am Doug Schulkind:

Tzotzzy Sunday, everyone!

@Wolfgang dude, we can't even lock down our Capitol building
  10:20am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am doctorjazz:

Wolfie, total lockdown? I don't think we were ever total, even during the strictest Spring lockdown.
  10:21am Linda Lee:

how do they figure people will eat? virtually?
Avatar 10:22am northguineahills:

@Howling: I'm in FL marooned in Tourst scheisseland, so, yes, stores are open (no public transit, no car).

hi Granny! how are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am WR:

hi Jeff and all. Have been listening since beginning, was shopping as usual. back now. somehow have not known about Tzotzil Taylor album until now. Strapped in and ready for the full set.
  10:25am Listener Robert:

Thanks, Linda Lee. Liner notes?
  10:27am Linda Lee:

spelled out in the piece ~ tho that was just once. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @WR! Geez, shopping. We need to do some of that.
Avatar 10:28am northguineahills:

I randomly played at the same show as Raphe Malik at ABC No Rio (I literally played the kitchen sink that night).
Avatar 10:29am duke:

Morning Jeff. Enjoying Cecil Taylor
  10:29am Linda Lee:

@ngh ~ beautiful! cast iron?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am doctorjazz:

I'm fully back, in Downward Facing Doc.
  10:30am Linda Lee:

those have a great tone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Linda Lee, life is not boring. i have some freshly steeped tea and a purring kitty, so all is well in the now. How 'bout you?
Avatar 10:30am northguineahills:

Uh, I used drum sticks and my recorder, and bricks...(it was totally improvised, didn't plan it).
Avatar 10:31am northguineahills:

Tzotzil is the language of the Maya in Chiapas. I have shirts, of the neo-Zapatista insurrection my partner made of it....
Avatar 10:31am DJpeterDE:

Good morning all! How can we get Leo Feigen to join Bandcamp!
  10:32am Linda Lee:

@Granny ~ so glad all's well! life isn't boring here either! i've left the catskills! 35 year trip complete. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Mx. Granny (e/em):

@LL: that's right! you're right back where you started from!
  10:33am Linda Lee:

@ngh ~ that sounds like real fun. was that a cast iron sink?
  10:33am Linda Lee:

not really, love. i'm in texas! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am doctorjazz:

Texas sounds like it's in an uproar right now.
Avatar 10:34am Listener Gregory:

Not enough of an uproar if you ask me, so please don't.
  10:35am Linda Lee:

is it? not where i'm at. calm as milk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @duke and @DJpeterDE! Given the process I went through to order this Leo CD, I don't see that label showing up on Bandcamp any time soon.
  10:36am Doug Schulkind:

Jimmy Carter embracing Cecil: https://images.app.goo.gl/ub9wEE65tvmKERD5A
  10:38am Linda Lee:

i was lucky enough to see Cecil play in 76 or 77. really superb.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

Ooof, Doug. A photo from another country.
Avatar 10:38am northguineahills:

ABC No Rio was basically a squat upstairs, w/ an actual venue downstairs, in Loisaida. We were given any room to play in, and, I picked the kitchen (the place wasn't too pretty).
  10:39am Linda Lee:

haha! got it.
loved it there. also loved the squat theater! ;-)
Avatar 10:39am northguineahills:

I saw Cecil in 2002 and 2005....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

@Linda Lee, was that 76/77 gig solo or with a group?
Avatar 10:40am northguineahills:

It was usually a punk/hardcore venue, but, every once a while, they'd let jazz/improv shows come in...
  10:40am Linda Lee:

solo, as recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am doctorjazz:

Man, Cecil can really play (I know that's no big revelation, but check out how fast his right hand is. It bellies the canard that free jazz takes no technique)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am doctorjazz:

Glad I got to see CT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Mx. Granny (e/em):

@LL Texas! i guess i did lose track of your adventures!
  10:43am Linda Lee:

i move fast, love. :-) i did speed through n y to catch a plane! had to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Jeff Golick:

This Carlos Ward solo marks the halfway point of the piece, btw.
Avatar 10:44am northguineahills:

@dr jazz: I've studied Cecil's work for years. If notated, there would be 248th notes clustered together....
  10:44am Linda Lee:

that was really interesting. the city seemed .. subdued. mellow. the last words you'd use for my home town before now.
Avatar 10:44am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Glad I got to see CT too, Doc. Jus once, at Colmbia with: Max Roach! Max Roach playled a solo on the wingnut of his highhat for about 9 minutes. Unfuggedable!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am doctorjazz:

Carlos Ward! Love his Abdullah Ibrahim time, he can also really play that gotten!
NGH, I believe it, and I don't think it's actually acknowledged all that much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Jeff Golick:

Was that the big outdoors festival at Columbia, @Stork? If so, I was there, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Ah, Howlin', I believe a cd was released of that performance (which I have).
Avatar 10:48am northguineahills:

Never got to see Max Roach, such a regret...
Avatar 10:49am northguineahills:

Mummers, are usually traveling actors in the Middle Ages....
  10:50am Linda Lee:

we've all got those regrets. there was always plenty of time & opportunity to see what we wished to see. 'cept there wasn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i was too young to fully appreciate the time i got to see Max Roach, at Yoshi's in Emeryville, probably 1992?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am doctorjazz:

I got to see Roach, but when he was close to passing, and was a shadow of his old self. It was sad, but still glad I got to it.
  10:51am Linda Lee:

wow! how cool that you saw him, tho!
Avatar 10:51am Martinibomb:

Hello Jeff! hi Granny!
Avatar 10:51am Martinibomb:

More Cecil Taylor! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Mx. Granny (e/em):

hey, Martinibomb!
  10:51am Linda Lee:

hey MB! love the new haircut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @Martinibomb!

This is a write-up of the 2000 Max/Cecil throwdown that I saw: www.columbia.edu...
Avatar 10:53am Martinibomb:

I really connect with Cecil his work it's like what the inside of my head feels like most days heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Mx. Granny (e/em):

i was just barely old enough in 1992 to appreciate that Max Roach was one of the greats, but i was so new in my musical education that older me wishes i recalled more about it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Mx. Granny (e/em):

and, wow, this CT track is thrilling!
Avatar 10:54am Martinibomb:

@gran same here! I moved to Pdx around then and worked graveyard at Kinkos and this dude from Chicago totally schooled me on all music. Did me a huge favor. Wouldn't be here without him
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

I attended Cecil's (second) historical concert with Max Roach at Columbia, too. [Note for Jeff Golick: I went to that show with old friend Ivan Moses!] Speaking of which, today is Max Roach's 97th birthday. Expect a mega-celebration on the Stork Club, coming up in just over an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Mx. Granny (e/em):

@MB: i often think of those kind souls who put a record in my hand or told me a name to look for in the bins
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Jeff Golick:

I often feel the same, @Mx. Granny. I lament my terrible memory for musical experiences.
Avatar 10:55am northguineahills:

I got Graham Locke's account of the classic Braxton quartet (in the early 80s) in 1998, and then sought anything record he was on....
Avatar 10:55am DJpeterDE:

I got to see the Roach group with Bridgewater and Pope in 1988-ish, I think at the Village Gate.
Avatar 10:56am DJpeterDE:

@Doug was the Columbia concert hall packed? (Did people realize then what a big deal it was?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Mx. Granny (e/em):

can i double-clicky-star this?
Avatar 10:57am northguineahills:

ok, everyone, including Doug, is making me jelly. The one master I never saw live when alive.

@Granny: triple star (three tracks).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Jeff Golick:

It was outside on Columbia's main green or whatever, @DJpeterDE. Part of that June's jazz festival. David S. Ware Quartet also played. And Ron Carter (as I recall) really phoned in a duo perf.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

I did also get to see M'Boom, and his group with Ocean Pope.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

Oops, Odean Pope...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Tome:

!<>!Hey Cecil!<>!
  11:04am Linda Lee:

y'know, i think the important thing about seeing great art is the exposure. doesn't matter how much we appreciate it or even understand it. we'e been exposed & we then know what's possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Tome!
  11:05am Linda Lee:

this is why folks play music to pregnant women's bellies! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

And @Linda Lee: totally agree.
  11:06am Linda Lee:

thank you Jeff.
Avatar 11:06am northguineahills:

@LL: Sometimes it takes me years, to appreciate mucic/art/literature of what I witnessed/took in. That's why memory is what I value....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

The vocal section is Tzotzil, it seems.
Avatar 11:07am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeterDE, I heard that group too, I'm going to say in 82?? It made a huge impression on me. Max Roach's dignity somehow permeated the entire club. Cecil Bridgewater is a very underrated player and composer.
  11:08am Linda Lee:

sure! we love to remember consciously. we also remember subconsciously.
Avatar 11:08am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Yes, Jeff, Doc, et al. It was a beautiful night outdoors, and I got unbelievably close to the stage. I had no idea that was recorded! Or that Dougie was there! Speaking of Our Father Who Art in Pittsburgh, Mr. Schulkind, for those who haven't heard it, did his own tribute, the day after Max died in '07. It must be heard by you and you you, and he did a wonderful INTERVIEW(!!) with Max, besides. Link to it here: wfmu.org...

Morning Linda Lee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Tome:

Hey now Jeff and all good mornings , Scott McDowell used to have a "hey Cecil" segment on his show, now and then, , another nice new discovery for me at that time just kind of into the "jazz" thing ,, and for this woonderful Station bringing here too of course !
  11:09am Linda Lee:

hi chresti!! good for you! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @Tome! I shamelessly copied Scott's thing for a recurring Anthony Braxton feature for a little while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

Yes, I remember the Roach/Taylor reunion as being a BIG deal, appropriately attended. I, too, saw Max's -80's group with Bridgewater and Pope. Saw them many multiple times. Some of my greatest ever experiences of live music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Yes, @doc. There is a form!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am doctorjazz:

I'm in on the place, Jeff! Seems like a bargain!
Avatar 11:13am northguineahills:

@dr jazz: yep, Not that I know a word of Tzotzil...(native languages of Mexico are not my forte, unless the they enter the Spanish lexicon).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am doctorjazz:

This Moondoc track is lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am doctorjazz:

Did Cecil (know Tzotzil)?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Artie:

Oh! Loving this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

Ocean Pope is my new all-time favorite typo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Jeff Golick:

Not sure, @doc, but I do think he knew a lot about certain ancient cultures and their artforms.
  11:20am Mark R:

It's encouraging to know that Cecil lived in a $2 1/2 million brownstone. Starving artist, my ass.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @Mark R!
Avatar 11:22am coelacanth∅:

that does seem like a good price for Cecil's home, considering that, but especially the location.
5 levels + a garden!
i'd put a garden on the roof too
  11:22am Linda Lee:

where we live isn't always a reflection of our wealth, tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am doctorjazz:

Bern Nix on guitar- mellow, not at all like I think of him From his Ornette dates.
  11:23am Linda Lee:

some of us are what's called 'cash poor' & won't sell off the only asset we have.
  11:23am Linda Lee:

even if we're broke! :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am doctorjazz:

I'm guessing CT for there before Brooklyn became BROOKLYN, and it wasn't a "desirable" neighborhood at the time (everything on the "wrong" side of Flatbush Avenue was inexpensive until relatively recently).
  11:25am Linda Lee:

fort greene was ghetto for a long time, for sure.
Avatar 11:29am northguineahills:

@LL: I got held up at gunpoint in Fort Green in 2003 (I was jumped five times that summer in Bed-Stuy and Clinton Hills as well).
Avatar 11:30am coelacanth∅:

does anyone say Cecil was a "starving artist" in the latter 1/3 of his life?
i should hope not, by then. he worked constantly and was world-famous, eventually given some degree of the recognition he deserved. i hope he was very comfortable by the last few decades of his life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am alanr:

Excellent show! Nice curating of this period of time in our musical life, and recordings that are new to my ears. Thank you!!!
Avatar 11:30am northguineahills:

(Most times, I talked my way out of it, as being a poor grad student [I was])
Avatar 11:31am chresti:

Same in LA "doc, in the east and northeast neighborhoods like Highland Park, Echo Park..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @alanr! Means a lot.
Avatar 11:33am Howlin' Wolfgang:

WHOA!! This reminds me of a solo that Wm. did on the old Stork Club - in the control room with just a humble mike on his bass - sawing away, blowing my mind! He didn't even want to bother with the studio. What a great guest, what a great player!! Thank you Jeff!!
Avatar 11:33am Listener Gregory:

Wasn't Cecil ripped off by an assistant in the last years of his life? I remember reading an interview about it, and reporters kept asking him about the money, and he would talk about combining poetry with music or something. He wouldn't say a word about losing the money. It was priceless.
Avatar 11:34am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Hard to believe you barely got out of the 80's with this show!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Jeff Golick:

The contractor ripped him off, @LG, to the tune of almost $500,000 -- prize money from a Japanese award he'd received for lifetime achievement.
Avatar 11:34am coelacanth∅:

yes i remember that Gregory
  11:35am Gerry from Miami:

Cecil, a starving artist? Maybe eons ago when he was a young man, but in his final years, he must have been comfortable, at least for a while. He did receive one of those very generous MacArthur "genius" grants, as did Ornette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am doctorjazz:

I read he lost $500,000 to a contractor working on his house, ripped off.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Jeff Golick:

Is there an archive of that perf, @Stork?
Avatar 11:35am chresti:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Hey there, @Gerry from Miami!

Yes, t-tape archive somewhere in Jersey City, I'm gonna get serious about salvaging some stuff.
Avatar 11:36am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, once we buy the house, we'll have to come up with $400,000 to repair and renovate it. I just cannot live with that backsplash!
(I have been waiting my life to use that line after hearing it in hundreds of real estate shows.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Jeff Golick:

Maybe if we all sell some of our LPs, and CDs...?
Avatar 11:38am Listener Gregory:

Well, I would calculate that is about 3,000 items and we would get... (sound of adding machine)... $225 for them. It's a start!
Avatar 11:38am Howlin' Wolfgang:

That last comment really got garbled - again: if I ever get my hands on that old dat-tape archive again, i'm gonna damn well start to rescue stuff.
Avatar 11:40am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Wow, this piece has me levatatin' !!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

I'm sad looking at what is not going to make it into this show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

LG, currently, it would depend on the mix of LPs to CDs. LPs right now can sell for a bit of cash. CDs now, pretty much have to give away (until the upcoming "CD revival").
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am doctorjazz:

(you also have to be willing to sell one by one, not to a dealer, of course)
Avatar 11:45am chresti:

Yeah, the kitchen has the contractor's work written all over it, like when they flip a rental property @Listener Gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am doctorjazz:

I may have to start thinking about that, if I ever retire and downsize. The LPs and CDs would be the limiting factor (probably why I'll wind up staying where I am).
  11:46am Gerry from Miami:

The ripoff story is true. But I think he was doing OK before the grant was awarded. Maybe other listeners have more detailed information. Saw Cecil at Royce Hall, UCLA, late 70s. Raphe Malik, David Ware, forget who on drums. No bassist, I think. Too long ago. But I attended this concert with my friend, many-time Down Beat Magazine Critics' Poll and Readers' Poll winner on flute, James Newton. We got to go into the dressing room afterward where Mr. Taylor was desperate for a menthol cigarette. The whole band was exhausted from a very intense set. I can attest that most of the audience was as well.

Also wanting to multiple clicky star tracks and the show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Dave in VT:

VT Knit Girl and I had our first date at a David Budbill - William Parker performance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am doctorjazz:

Love James Newton, at least I did, haven't seen anything released by him in many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am WR:

the bandcamp page doesn't credit the reader but it sounds like William Parker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Recitation by Parker, yes.

Very cool, @Dave in VT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for that remembrance, @Gerry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am doctorjazz:

(my 1st date with my wife, went to see Abdullah Ibrahim/Ekaya-with Carlos Ward-at Sweet Basils, NYC)
Avatar 11:54am Listener Gregory:

In terms of likelihood of date success, I have to give @doctorj the edge over @Dave in VT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

I dragged then-girlfriend/now-wife to see Space Is the Place in an overheated NYU screening room. She fell promptly to sleep. It's a wonder we're still together.
  11:56am Gerry from Miami:

Great show, Jeff! I will try to tune in again next week.
Avatar 11:56am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Doug, Jeff, and everyone for their "on the scene" reports of the Columbia concert.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, Gerry! Give our best to James Newton!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am doctorjazz:

That was about 30 years ago, @LG, so I guess it worked (but I maintain she should have known what she was getting into from then on).
Avatar 11:58am Howlin' Wolfgang:

Sweet sweet William-ing, Jeff!! See y'all down the Club next? Max'll be happy to see yuz!
Avatar 11:58am hyde:

thanks for the cool tribute show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am doctorjazz:

Thanks, Jeff! Loved the show!
Time for some clubbing!
Avatar 11:58am Listener Gregory:

As I'm looking at the photos of Cecil's place, I'm getting excited. The fourth floor would be perfect for holding loft concerts. Jeff, you come up with the $2m, I'll come up with the $.5, and Doug will supply the renovation costs. Deal? Call me when you're ready. Also, fantastic show! Thanks.
Avatar 11:59am coelacanth∅:
