Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

@TDK60
Not so unusual. In the old days early record companies were hardware stores and auto dealerships and such. Stores that had room to begin selling records jumped into the record-making business so that would have something to cash in on.
  9:17am Irene:

Love those blood harmonies! The blend is sublime. Some sweet sadness to start the day.
Avatar 9:17am StringOFperils:

Stanley Brothers. Lever Brothers. Joyce Brothers......

"Blood harmony" is quite the evocative description.
  9:21am Irene:

The Haden Triplets albums are great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Gina Bacon:

Nice, Pedro!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Pedro in Arlington
Do you hear the echo of a particular Carter Family tune in this current selection?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Pedro in Arlington:

Fun fact: Sara Carter didn't like "Single Girl, Married Girl" and iddn't want to record it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Doug Schulkind:

Can you tell what they're saying? They wouldn't bring their WHAT along?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Pedro in Arlington:

Hi Doug. Hi Wendy. Hi everybody. Jimmy Martin was a great performer but apparently a horrible husband. I think he was also illiterate. His ex-wife wrote a book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

If they'd let him bring his WHAT along?! I can't make it out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Wendy del Formaggio:

Pedro, is Sara on lead vocals on the track? If so, that may explain her delivery, which always struck me as trying to communicate something subliminally. I may have mis-read her all these years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Pedro: i'm sure he was glad he couldn't read it?
Avatar 9:29am Really Lisa:

Hello Doug and drummer people.
Morning fires to put out.. lost track of drummer time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Brian in UK:

Doug, you could do a whole show of misheard or not understood lyrics.
Avatar 9:31am TDK60:

Hi Brian in UK. UK metal heads could get albums from ironmongers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Stanley:

Doug are you accompanying yourself on the banjo, here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Pedro in Arlington:

Hi Wendy. Yes, generally Sara sang lead. She had a pretty rough life with AP, having to raise the kids and work the farm as AP generally went out on the road hunting down songs. I guess that explains the divorce even though they kept the act together along with Maybelle for several years. Even moved to Texas/Mexico as a group to be on border-blaster radio.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Brian in UK:

TDK60, does that warrant a rim shot!!!!!
Avatar 9:35am TDK60:

(Not that The Holy Modal Rounders were metal, hee..)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Brian in UK:

They were nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am fred:

Hello Doug and drummers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Wendy del Formaggio:

Hello Pedro: That's great background. Thank you. I think we can "read" Sara's delivery on "Single Girl" a bunch of ways, and still be mindful of the constrictions on female thoughts and behaviors. She may have been conveying something even she wasn't free to articulate or even imagine. And that's why I love that song, but it's not the only reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
My inner banjo.

Good afternoon, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Hello hello hello, Really Lisa!
  9:37am bigplanetnoise:

Morning, Really Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
A whole show of unintelligible lyrics sounds like some good clean fun!
Avatar 9:38am bobdc:

I'm joining late--"Woman at 23-Hour Love-In"? What hour are we up to so far?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Brian in UK:

Doug, s'funny I was just about to ask if we will 'see' Mayuko again and this came on.
  9:38am zzzm:

wow, it's japanese feminism manifest song
Avatar 9:38am StringOFperils:

Shiokaze before Shoegaze.
Avatar 9:39am Listener Gregory:

@Wendy del Formaggio, Levon Helm also covers "Single girl..." on his excellent album Dirt Farmer. I don't remember if he daughter does the lead vocals on that track, but I think he does.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Doug Schulkind:

@zzzm
Loose translastion of that song title was "Woman's Declaration."
  9:39am zzzm:

Are you sure this minami saori singing? she wasn't enka singer tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Pedro in Arlington:

Wendy - Permit me to recommend the doc "American Epic," especially the part about the Carters. It's really well-done and avoids a lot of the documentary cliches. No Clapton interview! No Bono interview!It's on Amazon Prime, for those of us who can't escape Bezos' clutches. www.americanepic.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Pedro: no Bono interview? Doesn't that break international laws?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Doug Schulkind:

@zzzm
Wow great ears. I typed in the wrong song. But Saori is coming up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Wendy del Formaggio:

Thanks, Pedro! Haha, I love that there's no Clapton or Bono. All done with their talking heads. I don't do Amazon anything, but maybe I can get it from the library.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Doug Schulkind:

Now THIS is Saori Minami.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Brian in UK:

zzzm, respect. Sounds like strings by John Barry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Brian in UK:

Think we all agreed on Bono, he was in the Fame Studios film for some reason.
  9:43am zzzm:

i thought the previous enka song was sung by Keiko Fuii
  9:44am zzzm:

Keiko Fuji
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

One of the absolutely thrilling things about doing radio for the WFMU audience: There is always at one person out there listening who knows 10 times what I know about any given artist/style.track.

@zzzm
If it was Keiko Fuji, then the compilation I have is mislabeled. (Keiko does appear elsewhere on it.) I do not know my Japanese female pop well enough to spot such an error.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

If this isn't Morita Doji, I'll eat my hat. With a big lump of wasabi.
Avatar 9:47am Listener Gregory:

Morita Doji is sounding French here to me. I hear the Japanese, but still, the style strikes me as similar to French chanteuse-y.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Brian in UK:

Check with Sheila B.
  9:48am zzzm:

shiela B may be the better person to verify them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Maki Asakawa is singing here a Langston Hughes poem set to music. It's one of at least three Langston Hughes songs she performed.
Avatar 9:51am Listener Gregory:

I had no idea any of this existed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Pedro in Arlington:

Long live Jambi, @Mx Granny. Time to watch Christmas at the Playhouse and not just for Little Richard at the height of his ubiquitous Reagan-era presence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
How very existential of you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am fred:

I didn't know Jun Togawa had covered this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am listener james from westwood:

Killer Togawa cover of this classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Old-time FMU listeners will recognize this as a cover of the Brigette Fontaine tune that DJ Ray Franks used as his opening theme. For newer listeners, this is a cover of the Brigette Fontaine tune that DJ Ray Franks used as his opening theme.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Doug Schulkind:

There is a whole subset of Zoom transgressions that should be given the name Toobining. (Google "Jeffrey Toobin.")
Avatar 10:28am Listener Gregory:

Toobining while tobogganing can be dangerous. (Seasonal warning.)

Avatar 10:37am Really Lisa:

Hello bpn :) Good Friday morning to you.
Avatar 10:38am βrian:

Good morning. I hope you aren't as cranky as I am this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am WR:

Hello all on this Friday. When I first connected this morning I heard Doug say something to the effect of "it's great to be alive" and then proceeded to play music that has added to my conundrum of what selections will I make for this reputed last bandcamp Friday.. there are many many worse dilemmas to have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Brian in UK:

They say that Trump did not like music. He had no MP3.

Cheerful greetings, Cranky βrian! WR! dougseidel! Ramblin' Ray! bobdc!
Avatar 10:45am Listener Gregory:

@Brian in UK, discogs credits it to Mingus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

@bobdc
Can't wait to hear that AND the newly unearthed Sonny Rollins material, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Please don't use profanity on this comment board.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am doctorjazz:

Nice Mingus (one I don't recall), hi Drummers!
Avatar 10:46am TDK60:

Wow, never heard much early Mingus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Brian in UK:

Listener Gregory, I was being somewhat lighthearted, meaning Woodpecker.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Hiya, doc!

I shouldn't have said the bass is "featured" on these tracks. Really, the point is that the bass seems more up front in the mix than is typical with this tunes. At least, in my ears.
Avatar 10:47am Listener Gregory:

@Brian in UK, ack! You got me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Brian in UK:

Doug, apologies but you triggered it by your comment at 10:20.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Are you saying that my having a large MP3 library is what makes me a good social worker?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I should have issued a trigger warning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Brian in UK:

It's a hair combover trigger.
Avatar 10:52am StringOFperils:

That's how Roy Rogers used to call his horse.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

I wonder if Hair Combover ever met Harry Conover.
  10:53am Andrew in Toronto:

This sure is superior to television.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Matt Fiveash:

Doug! How serendipitous to tune in right as you announce this bass-in-front set. You're gonna make me leave late for work with this one, just like in the old days when I listened over the airwaves in my Jersey City hovel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Next up, something sweetish.
Avatar 10:54am βrian:

"Ukulele."
I bet Sugar could spell it correctly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am listener Rey:

This set is fantastic. Bert Dahlander and Henry Babasin go on my list of artists whose work I must explore further
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

It's from the LP "On a Date With Red Callender." No it's not, I made that up.

Clarence Jones is on bass here with Harold Land.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

Clarence Jones sounds much like Mingus to me.

Harold Land had a Blue Note album?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Uncle Michael:

Avatar 11:11am Listener Gregory:

Clarence Jones is pretty much a nonentity on the web except for multiple album credits. Strange! He sounded quite good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I had the same experience searching for info about Mr. Jones

@Uncle Michael
Go back to sleep, kid. I got this.

@Mr C
Blue Note released it, but it was probably just a licensing deal or something. Harold Land played on some Bobby Hutcherson Blue Note dates.

@Doug, have to go now, but thanks very much for a great show that violated geometric axioms with its 180º turns.

Doug, you nailed it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

The crappy stand-up piano on this cut is freaking perfect.
  11:43am Mark R:

Doug, your knowledge of should 45's never ceases to astound me. Week after week you play great tunes I've never heard before, usually by people I've never heard of. I picture you as a kid, hunched over a crappy little record player with a stack of 45s, absorbing this music, storing it in the deep recesses of your mind for the year 2020, when you'd lay it on us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Brian in UK:

Think this fella could add 'de' in the middle for full effect.

@Mark R
I don't deserve half that credit. I mostly rely on the work of other voracious collectors who hunched over their crappy little record players as kids. Then as adults, they shared their killer tracks with the universe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:
