Avatar 9:36am Chris Albertyn:

Listener Gregory, find a napkin quick, the upcoming segment involves some cockroach crushing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

The J.F.K. Quintet was a combo of prodigious players from the DC area. They release two albums in '61 and '62. Stopped gigging under their name after the assasination.
  9:38am Irene:

Maestro Doug! Loved that answering machine message. Thanks for this tribute.

Andrew White majored in oboe at Howard University. He was the principal oboist with the American Ballet Orchestra.
Avatar 9:42am Listener Gregory:

@Chris Albertyn, I have done cockroach crushing in my time, believe me.

@Irene
Peter knows all!
Avatar 9:42am Chris Albertyn:

Thank you Gina, lovely to be with you all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

Andrew White was a wonderful and odd bird. The walls of his home office were legendarily plastered from floor to ceiling with pin-up photos. A ribald streak ran parallel to his bountiful sonic achievements.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Doug Schulkind:

That tune Adagio was from an album White dedicated to a French Lady named Jocelyn. That was his wife, the former Jocelyn Uhl, who predeceased him several years ago.
Avatar 9:47am Listener Gregory:

"Ribald" is a word seldom heard on the comment board these days. Good one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Doug Schulkind:

Listening to Give the Drummer Some helps cure male pattern ribaldness, Listener Gregory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

I dedicated a set to Andrew White just over a year ago, just because I loved him. Check out the third set on this show from September 2019: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Irene Trudel:

FYI, Andrew White's obit in the NY Times: www.nytimes.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

You beat me to it, Irene! That photo of Andrew says almost everything you need to know.
  9:52am Ramblin' Ray:

Had the good fortune & privilige of stumbling upon a gig by Andrew White in '95. Phenomenal intensity, technique & fun-tastical. Recognised him again through hearing him on Doug's show some time back. A rare diamond. The obit is well worth a look.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Irene Trudel:

@Doug, love those holiday socks White is wearing in the photo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Andrew White played lived constantly in Washington, D.C., and he recorded himself incessantly and released dozens of his performances as LPs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Doug Schulkind:

Another stalwart player in D.C. was (is) the bass player Steve Novosel. He appears on almost every one of Andrew White's records. Novosel was Roberta Flack's first husband.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

White once presented a marathon live concert at the Top O' Foolery Club in Washington. It lasted 12 hours and different rhythm sections jumped in at different points to back him up. He released the entire performance on a series of recordings.

Thandi Ntuli is the niece of Selby Ntuli, founding member of the Beaters and then Harari in the 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Chris
It's just a particular quirk of mine. Generally on the playlist I try to post the original recording/date. Most DJs just present whatever source they are playing from. My style is probably confusingly unnecessary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

@Chris A
Starting off my next set will be the South African group The Black Hawks. I believe one of the members (was it Charlie Ndlovu?) went on to found or at least join Harari.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am doctorjazz:

OK, getting to listen for the final hour. Really like The Healer!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Mx. Granny (e/em):

Doug: i think a lot of folx appreciate that. Uncle Michael does that, too, including the format in which it was released; like shellac! Such a cool education.
Avatar 10:58am Chris Albertyn:

Thanks all for listening in, it has been fun sharing these selections with you. Next time December 25? I promise nothing Christmassy, but certainly upbeat and cheerful. Peace! Stay safe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am dutchtheo:

Thanks, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Mx Granny
I just prefer presenting original source material and info whenever possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Irene Trudel:

Beautiful music as always, @Chris! Thank you, and I look forward to next month.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am doctorjazz:

Yup, I was confused early on by the way UM listen tracks ("you really have that 78?"), But I got to like it once I understood the system.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

@Chris A
You can spin anything you desire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am dutchtheo:

Spring in Durban!
Avatar 11:00am Chris Albertyn:

doctorjazz - in this case, yes, I really do have those 78s (If I understood your question correctly)
Avatar 11:00am Listener Gregory:

It's a sad commentary on my own expectations that I am always surprised by the incredible diversity of the music Chris brings here. Thanks for opening my (our?) eyes, Chris. Also, ears.
  11:00am Dean:

In fact you can hold back spring. But when you release it...B-O-I-N-G!
Avatar 11:01am Chris Albertyn:

Thanks so much listener Gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Artie:

Thanks, Chris. That was lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Mx. Granny (e/em):

enjoying this so much, thanks, Chris!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am doctorjazz:

I believe you do, @Chris A!
Avatar 11:03am TDK60:

Thanks Chris.
  11:03am Ramblin' Ray:

Thanks Chris. As satisfying as a Durban bunnychow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am chresti:

Thanks Chris.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

Hello and howdy, Dean and Artie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am doctorjazz:

Definitely a show to catch-up on in the archives...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
You need more ears, Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am doctorjazz:

But the baby had great pipes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

This Zambian band is named WITCH, which is an acronym for:

We
Intend
To
Cause
Havoc
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Franco Twinkie:

Havoc now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Doug Schulkind:

Have another havoc, Franco Twinkie! And another!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Irene Trudel:

@Doug, I just realized I have a 4 CD set by WITCH, which I acquired from my workplace before the pandemic hit and haven't listened to yet. Now I have no excuse!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene Trudel
You will dig it! My fave LP of theirs is Lazy Bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

I tried Googling for more info on the Les Rross orch. and came up with bupkis.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Doug Schulkind:

I ascertained that they recorded for Decca West Africa, and that's about it.
Avatar 11:14am Listener Gregory:

I looked for Les Rross and came up with Nnada.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Doug Schulkind:

Les is more, Listener Gregory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am dutchtheo:

Les Rross orch from Benin is the only information i can find, (now)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
The Original Music compilation Money No Be Sand identifies Les Rross as being from Nigeria. Original Music were wonderful, but honestly, they made a lot of mistakes in what little discographical info they provided.
Avatar 11:20am Listener Gregory:

Eh Bien Mon Ami is all right--it's outa sight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Uncle Michael:

Join me for Hinky Dinky Time at the top of the hour and I promise you no one will judge you for wearing your stretchy pants.

Avatar 11:24am Really Lisa:

Beneath the Les Rross vid posted on YT.. there is one comment, correcting the poster re the band's country of origin. Perhaps try reaching out to the person who knew they were from Benin? Ya never know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

@Really Lisa
I gotta check that out. I am now officially on a mission. Must get to the bottom of the Les Rross mystery. (A mystery in my mind only.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Oh my freaking God do I adore this Wrinkar Experience track!!! All-time fave!!!!!!!
Avatar 11:26am Really Lisa:

It will be quite a mission, Doug.. that comment was from 4 yrs ago. But anyone who has a YT channel just might be reachable!
Avatar 11:27am TDK60:

Uncle Michael, you assume I have and wear stretch pants. Of course I do; now and then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am ParUbi:

Did I just hear the phone ring?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am ParUbi:

Also, good morning Doug, hey everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am dutchtheo:

that was not a 1972 phone:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am ParUbi:

Those marimbas almost work, though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

That was my fucking phone. Which rang even though I have it on Do Not Disturb. It paired with the computer that is running the show. Veerrrrrryyy embarrassing.
Avatar 11:30am TDK60:

Doug, a show with such havoc is unacceptable, except on Fridays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am ParUbi:

Now you know we're listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Mx. Granny (e/em):

robot overlords can be such bullies!
Avatar 11:33am Listener Gregory:

Cell phone no be sand, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Doug Schulkind:

So glad you're out there, neighbor ParUbi! So glad you are all out there and right here with me!
  11:36am Irene:

@Doug, agreed. Your Friday morning show is indeed a sanctuary from the crazy.
Avatar 11:37am Listener Gregory:

Doug, if you can play "Watching the Rainbow" when the other side is "Miss Frankenstein," you have greater self-control than I do. I have to leave to get in my walk while it is still cloudy and gloomy. See you next week, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up next on your 24-hour Drummer Stream is fan favorite Uncle Michael aka DJ Sweatypants! All manner of mayhem and (continued) havoc are in store for all who stay tuned for HINKY DINKY TIME.

More havoc here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene
Or at the very least, a wholly different crazy.
  11:38am Andy S.:

Was "Watching The Rainbow" (great track) recorded by the same George Jackson who wrote "Old Time Rock and Roll" for Bob Seger and wrote/recorded "Aretha, Sing One For Me."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Doug Schulkind:

Always a thrill to have you at the party, Andy S! Yes, Mr. Jackson was a hugely talented fellow.
Avatar 11:42am hyde:

i like looking up these people, and finding that Lillian Dorr was in the Vonettes. But NOT the Vonettes that recorded on Cobblestone. Easy mistake to make
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Seems I put together a rather doo-woppy soul set to close the show. Mostly just so I get to use the phrase doo-woppy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Doug Schulkind:

So many Vonettes!
  11:46am Andy S.:

I don't know who "Pete Cooke" is or was, but he could really HOLLA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Doug Schulkind:

@Andy S
Meet Pete Cooke: sirshambling.com...
Avatar 11:47am david w:

I Will Drum Some. Thanks, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

Thank YOU, david w!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Mx. Granny (e/em):

it CAN be challenging to find an excuse to use the phrase doo-woppy. i am enjoying this!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Mx Granny
Always remember. Once you doo-woppy, you can never undoo-woppy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Doug Schulkind:

Cry Baby Curtis = Curtis Payne
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Doug Schulkind:

Yeah yeah yeah!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Franco Twinkie:

Grrrrrr aahhhhh neeeeeee !!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

I'll be so glad to see your smiling ears again next Friday!
Avatar 11:55am TDK60:

Thanks, Doug and Chris.
Avatar 11:56am Really Lisa:

Thank you, Doug. A lovely soundtrack to Fri morning.
