or should I be sayin "Top o the marnin ta ya boyo"
  9:08am Irene:

Looks like there won’t be mistletoe or a tree in this house unless I can find something cheaper outside NYC. Yesterday we passed by a typical street vendor, whose small-ish trees were in the $70-$90 range.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Spinning Giant:

now that's one lively goose, I'll say!

  9:11am mauri:

Jig is in the air. Hey there Doug and drummahs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Brian in UK:

Irene that is shocking, we managed to get one for half that price and as tall as fifteen leprechauns standing on each others shoulders.
Avatar 9:11am Listener Gregory:

My local news said that Christmas trees are selling faster than usual. The suggestion is that more people are digging in at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Spinning Giant:

Brian - whats the standard ratio for conversion of leprechauns to imperial (or metric) - just wondering how many could stack themselves comfortably in my lil sapin...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Maggie B.:

Bill just said he's picturing you Riverdancing, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Brian in UK:

  9:14am Irene:

Those prices seem to be typical. The trees bigger than tabletop sized were $125 and up. I always wrestle with the idea of not putting one up (no kids in our household) but this might be the year I stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am coelacanth∅:

i sometimes decorate with lights and green garland but have never gotten a tree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Brian in UK:

Irene, cheaper to buy a chain saw and head out to the woods.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Maggie B.:

Irene, years ago we got an artificial "pencil tree" at some tiny outlet in Kingston - it was $1 a foot. I paid $6 for it and it's nearly 20 years old, still looks good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

We used to live in an Italian neighborhood in Brooklyn. The tree-seller at the end of our block was an aging wise guy who saw them fall off the back of a truck. He used to give us a discount because he liked my wife's hats.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am coelacanth∅:

(buy the chainsaw, and plant 5 fast-growing pines or firs in your yard, and then 1/year)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Maggie B.:

things are always falling off the backs of trucks in - let me guess - Carroll Gardens?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Brian in UK:

Not heard fall off the back of a lorry/truck in the longest time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am coelacanth∅:

they just don't make trucks like they used to
  9:20am Irene:

Maggie B, sounds like a good idea. Some years ago I had a Ficus tree that I used to decorate. Maybe it’s time to get another.
  9:20am Funky16Corners:

In the NY/NJ area things are falling off the backs of trucks constantly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Brian in UK:

Must be very hilly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Maggie B
Carroll Gardens indeed!
Avatar 9:22am Really Lisa:

So many trucks in my NJ area they seem to be falling off trees.

<sits back down>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

VERY safe neighborhood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am coelacanth∅:

a quick look at pencil trees (which i'd never heard of) says $66.-$263.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Maggie B.:

also, "fell off the back of a truck" central
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am coelacanth∅:

Lisa hahaha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Webhamster Henry:

I'm enjoying this set! GIVE THE FIDDLER SOME!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Maggie B.:

coelacanth∅ - WOW! I really got lucky, I guess. It's a really pretty tree and resembles the evergreens you see in Oregon and Washington.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Brian in UK:

Looks like we are leaving the European Union with no deal, bugger all trade agreements and increasing tariffs. 'Take back control', my arse.
I hear Canada is cold this time of year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Doug Schulkind:

The wise-guy tree seller on my block was also part of the operation selling armloads of whatever the hottest toys of the Xmas season were that year. They sold them in the back of the bagel store next to the lot with the trees. People dashing in for the Everything with a shmear, and a Cabbage Patch Doll. Hilarious!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am coelacanth∅:

i see some for 40 bucks now. it doesn't say how tall it is but looks like about 5-6"...unless they're using miniature furniture for the display
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am WR:

The fiddlers of Sligo are known throughout the world because they've traveled around the world in search of a good day's pay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Brian in UK:

Sounds a bit like Spinal Tap's Stonehenge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am coelacanth∅:

i'll agree you're lucky Maggie!
Avatar 9:28am TDK60:

True story, long ago an older relative of mine dismissed a great grandparent of Irish extraction whom I was curious about, as "just a fiddler."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Webhamster Henry:

My father famously stole a tree off a lot on Christmas eve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Webhamster Henry:

I like that these were all fiddle solos and not buried in a mix.
  9:29am BillD:

Greetings from Orange County, NY, to Allegheny County Ireland!

My Dad would always blast The Grey Goose loud on the weekend mornings to wake us kids up

My spouse snagged a beautiful fresh tree outside a law firm some years ago. Their party as early and they pitched it afterward. That was a coup.

She was like a triumphant beaver returning from the kill.

Has there been a country song about alternate side parking yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am coelacanth∅:

Lisa i can relate. i use "christmas" lights year-round though, so one could say i've pre-decorated!

probably wont do that this year though.

Sad songs with spoken recitations in the middle. The best!

dutchtheo: the best!
  9:52am prudy:

this set is weirdly soothing...
Avatar 9:52am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff g, a friend of mine was moving into a Manhattan apartment. His moving truck took up a number of spaces. Someone drove up and asked how long they would be unpacking: over 2 hours, probably. "OK, thanks," the guy said, and double-parked next to the truck and opened up a newspaper, waiting for the space to be released. That was my friend's introduction to NYC.
  9:53am BillD:

Country music the way it ought be and should be.
  9:53am bigplanetnoise:

I could go for a set (show? week?) of country tunes about coffee.....
Avatar 9:53am Really Lisa:

Exactly, coel. Plus this year I seem unable to not be annoyed, particularly at extended family members who post on social media, 'life is good, I'm sitting here enjoying <such and such meal or holiday treat>'. I'm not past the pandemic. My dad is gone from covid (that post was his only surviving sister) I'm not loaded with good tidings and cheer.
Not meaning to be a downer. Just not good at 'tis the season 2020.
  9:53am prudy:

but then again, I'm an aging white girl...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Doug Schulkind:

@prudy
I agree completely. A nice infusion of "someone else has always got it worse" energy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Irene Trudel:

Jeff g., parking has gotten pretty sad in NYC lately. A sad Country song is def needed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
Make if coffee with suds and you've got a deal.
  9:55am prudy:

Really Lisa: sorry for your loss...I've always hated the often fake cheer of the holidays...
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

Is Covid Country a sub-genre yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Irene Trudel:

So sorry, Really Lisa! Family can sometimes be insensitive.
Avatar 9:57am Really Lisa:

Thank you, prudy! From one aging white girl to another.
Thank you, too, Irene! Yeah I wonder how one can seem so disconnected. Maybe it's her only way of coping? But think before posting, right?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am coelacanth∅:

Lisa i know you've had it particularly rough this year i can easily understand all of that being processed into anger. it's better than falling apart.
Avatar 9:59am βrian:

I think we need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission where the Covidiots can step up, come clean, and make amends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Spinning Giant:

"Mopeytown" ...always a choice destination...
Avatar 10:00am Really Lisa:

Thanks, coel! I realize anger isn't necessarily productive, but yeah, better than the alternative. I have thought of not getting out of bed.. but need my income!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

I'm so so sorry, Really Lisa. Just awful. We, your radio family, love you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am coelacanth∅:

your aunt's seeming attitude is understandable but her behavior is insensitive -in my opinion.
- i say understandable not because i'm okay with it - it's sad...but because of how many times i've witnessed siblings that didn't even communicate with each-other for years, or for the last decades of their lives.
(ie) my father didn't seem to give a crap when his twin sister died. (also his only sibling)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am coelacanth∅:

TDK i certainly don't have a war on xmas! i love certain things about it. every 2-3 years i think okay i'm decorating this year; then time slips away and i don't.
- but not because of humbug!

Avatar 10:14am Listener Gregory:

From Wikipedia, re: Angola revolutionaries: In 1971, while on tour with the Ornette Coleman Quartet in Portugal (at the time under a fascist dictatorship), Haden dedicated a performance of his "Song for Che" to the anticolonialist revolutionaries in the Portuguese colonies of Mozambique, Angola, and Guinea. The following day, he was detained at Lisbon Airport, jailed, and interrogated by the DGS, the Portuguese secret police. He was only released after Ornette Coleman and others complained to the American cultural attaché, and he was later interviewed in the United States by the FBI about his choice of dedication.

What a chilling story and what a huge middle finger of a song from Mr. Haden.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Doug Schulkind:

I believe this music style from Sao Tomé is called puxa.
Avatar 10:21am TDK60:

Sorry, it was C. Haden's "Closeness" album, a record of duets. "Free Portugal" was with drummer Paul Motian.

Angola, Indiana was named after Angola, NY, which was named after ... Angola.
Avatar 10:26am Listener Gregory:

Doug, Sonny knows you only talk over the greatest. Also, has anyone heard this new Sonny Rollins release of a trio concert in Holland, 1967, w/Han Bennink on drums?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Uncle Michael:

I can't find the mylar bag I was going to wear today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Gina Bacon:

No, I'm in an actual house now! Thank you, Doug!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

I cling to the image of you in your attic, Gina! But I'm glad you're back on terra firma.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Here, you can use my lar bag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

I wanna start a band called Lardbag.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I just wrapped a white-knuckle, vice-like grip around my digital copy of that new Sonny Rollins! And I've got the new Mingus, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Donald Byrd is your trumpetist here!
Avatar 10:35am βrian:

I once flew Aer Mingus.
Avatar 10:35am TDK60:

Happy Hannukah. And in Geneva, happy Escalade Day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Jeff Golick:

@βrian: where cats who can use the lavatory fly free.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

Phil Woods on this cut does nothing to dispel the impression most formed that he was a big fat Charlie Parker imitator.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Irene Trudel:

@Doug, I've been enjoying the show as I putter around this morning, but now must drop off to do work. Carry on!
  10:42am Funky16Corners:

Who’s playing organ on this Braith session?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

@Irene
Put down your putter and pick up your wedge. #golfhumor
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, please give us a review of the Rollins when you hear it.
As to Phil Woods, I think he had his own recognizable style, albeit heavily indebted to Bird. Many *tried* to imitate Parker, but few actually succeeded well enough to make good music. In my humble opinion!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

@Funky16Corners
Billy Gardner was on organ. Grant Green on guitar!

Now everyone, without Googling, try to guess who is on alto sax here playing alongside Gene Ammons' tenor sax!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
I generally give Phil Woods a break, but I thought his Parkersonian imitation on that cut was absurdly unabashed.
Avatar 10:47am Listener Gregory:

I've been listening to a lot of Oliver Nelson big-band projects, and Phil Woods is usually the best player in them. They're not so straightforward be-bop, so that may help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Doug Schulkind:

Rudy Van Gelder going heavy with the reverb on Jug's tenor sax here. I LOVE it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am chresti:

Morning Doug and drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

@LG
Those Oliver Nelson dates are chockfull of surprises.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Guess the alto sax player here!!!

Good morning to you, chresti!
Avatar 10:49am Listener Gregory:

Is it John Coltrane??????????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Jeff Golick:

So sweeeeeeeeet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Yesirree!
Avatar 10:51am Listener Gregory:

Incredible. I don't think I've heard this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Coltrane is playing in alto here, but he's dreaming in soprano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

And get this...

MAL WALDRON

on piano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Jeff Golick:

Ammons + Coltrane represents a whole lot of history in one cut.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

This record was cut in 1958, but Prestige held it for release until Ammons was released from prison (for a drug offense) in 1960.
Avatar 10:59am Listener Gregory:

Anyone who knows some jazz history is faced with the massive racial unfairness of the "war on drugs," via how it ruined the lives of mostly Black artists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

That's a good music bed right there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Doug Schulkind:

Super high thread-count on that talkover track, Jeff Golick!

Our first LP was titled Number Two.

Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

@βrian, oof! That suggests a band title... Captain Dirt and the Night Soils? Have to work on it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

There is little truth to the rumor that Emma Swift paid $300 million for the rights to release this album of Dylan covers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Doug Schulkind:

Bless you Emma for covering all 11-plus minutes of this one. Very few have attempted it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Brian in UK:

Robyn Hitchcock paid for it!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Uncle Michael:

Only about 20 covers of this. Not many for a Dylan classic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

Robyn Hitchcock also has the most wonderful cat sitter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
Exactly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Brian in UK:

Been enjoying Lucinda's music for close on thirty years but here voice is getting between me and the songs nowadays.

Interesting that she also covers a song from Dylan's most recent album: I Contain Multitudes.

Avatar 11:45am TDK60:

That Diamond Joe track, kind of 45 that would jump out of those big old jukeboxes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

Lucinda could have absolutely released an album called Good Soils.

Diamond Joe was one of the great New Orleans singers.
