Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01am listener james from westwood:

Tatas! Matoes! Jeff! Jazzingtons!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am Jeff Golick:

It's on! Hey, @WR, hey, @listener james!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am fred:

Greetings Jeff, WR, james and others
  9:04am DJpeterDE:

Good morn, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am WR:

Hello Fred and those to come.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am fred:

Congrats on getting Justice Ivanka
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am WR:

Fred, don't scare me so early in the morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @fred1 Egad. The horrors nevers stop.
Greets, @DJpeterDE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am listener james from westwood:

Quoting someone on Twitter, why is it never Kissinger?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am fred:

Ted Cruz might get a lot of votes, just to get him out of the senate. Not a comforting thought though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Jeff Golick:

That was a good LOL, @ljfw.
Avatar 9:14am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, all.
Funny thing—I'm still writing 5780 on my checks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

@Listener Gregory, hi. I sincerely love that joke and regret that I haven't yet employed it this year. (My family, on the other hand, might not share that view.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

This Nate Wooley piece is going to take us on a trip, so get comfy.
Avatar 9:18am hyde:

hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am fred:

I haven't seen Nate Wooley in many years. Loosing streak looks like going on these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Jeff Golick:

I saw this piece performed last year, the day before they all went into a studio to make this recording; it really moved me.
Avatar 9:29am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, I used to wait for Letterman to do that joke every year, and now that he's off the air, I feel I have to do it myself.
Avatar 9:29am Listener Gregory:

Last night and again this morning, I had to turn on the heat. I feel so... dirty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

Was just starting to think about how it gets in this apartment when the radiators start steaming. Months of PSSSSHHTTTTT.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am fred:

@Jeff: Is your son still at college or did they close down?
  9:34am DJpeterDE:

Did Wooley explain the title?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Jeff Golick:

The Seven Storey part? Not at the performance, but I think he's written about it. I'll try to find a link...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Jeff Golick:

Here ya go: "ECSTATICISM: It's a term coined by Nate Wooley for the hoped achievements of his seven part song cycle for large ensemble, Seven Storey Mountain. Although named after Thomas Merton's self-referential religious tract, the project, now approaching its ten year anniversary has only an oblique connection to any sense of religious or mystical ephemera. Instead, the SSM compositions work to create a sense of ecstatic joy and emotional release that is purely human; made by people for people."

Avatar 9:37am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

(There have been five previous incarnations. SSM I and II are trios.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am doctorjazz:

Happy New Year! Git Yontif. Hoping for a better 5781.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Jeff Golick:

@fred: All continues to be ok at his campus, thankfully. I'm beginning to grow optimistic that they might make it through the semester.
  9:39am DJpeterDE:

Thanks Jeff! Still wondering about “storey”
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Jeff Golick:

Wassup wassup, @holland oats!

And to you and yours, @doctorjazz! Are you still sitting shiva?
Avatar 9:41am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeter, "Storey" refers to the floors of a building (or mountain, apparently), as opposed to "story." However, the latter spelling is getting more common for both meanings, sadly. I blame Millennials.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: I think it's just an alternate spelling (British) of "story."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am doctorjazz:

Shiva is done, thanks Jeff (a really poorly socially isolated Shiva; my daughter got a bit ill, we're waiting for COVID-19 test results for her. I don't think that was what it was, though).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Jeff Golick:

Btw, here's the band:
Nate Wooley - trumpet and amplifier
Samara Lubelski, C. Spencer Yeh - violins
Chris Corsano, Ben Hall, Ryan Sawyer - drums
Susan Alcorn - pedal steel guitar
Julien Desprez, Ava Mendoza - electric guitars
Isabelle O’Connell, Emily Manzo - keyboards
Yoon Sun Choi, Mellissa Hughes, Megan Schubert - voices
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

@doc: Ah, yes I'm sure it's difficult to come together nowadays. Hope your daughter is ok!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am fred:

British people might take exception to your calling their spelling "alternate". Always got a rise out of them celebrating Noah Webster's birthday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am doctorjazz:

She's better, thanks, little stomach bug. But These days we gotta test.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Fair point, @fred. I always loved the line, re US & UK: two countries divided by a shared language.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

...or common language. I am not a good joke teller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am fred:

@doctorjazz: the wedding went smoothly?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am doctorjazz:

Wasn't Dave Douglas going to do his Trumpet Festival in an on line version sometime soon?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Jeff Golick:

They did it online, @doc: fontmusic.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am doctorjazz:

Fred, it also was terribly isolated (but outdoors). My other daughter almost left-we were able to pull our table away from the crowded area, and she stayed. In the end, the Bride's dad (my brother in law) passed away a few weeks later; ir was good he was able to be there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am doctorjazz:

Ahhh, just happened a couple of days ago.
  9:59am DJpeterDE:

Thanks LG, I had the spellings reversed in my mind but that makes more sense. Although to my mind 10 storeys is a tall hill not a small mountain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am fred:

I'm going to test something soon. An intern who has covid will be in my office next week. We'll see how masks work. I'm vulnerable so it should be obvious if they don't (I'll die)
  10:00am DJpeterDE:

That last bit of engineering was like transporting the singers from a church to a living room
Avatar 10:02am Listener Gregory:

Because the people demand it, I looked up story/storey in the OED. They don't mark the spellings as British & American. The development of the sense referring to floors of a building is "obscure," but might derive from a row of painted windows or statures called "historia" in Latin, because it told a story or history (?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Jeff Golick:

Hey, @fred. Is there another way to go about that? Can the intern work remotely until not contagious??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Q: What building in Manhattan has the most stories?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Doug Schulkind:

A: The main branch of the New York Public Library

Good night everybody. You've been great. I'll be here all week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am Jeff Golick:

The library? (Hi, @Doug!)
Avatar 10:03am Listener Gregory:

@Doug, there are 8 million stories in the Naked City. This has been one of them.
Very dated TV show intro.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am fred:

@Jeff: The point of the test is to see whether I survive. Bosses all bailed out and won't be there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am doctorjazz:

The opening notes brought Dolphy to mind. Did your temple do an online version of local musicians playing, Jeff? (this is a great version of Eliahu, btw!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
Womp womp!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Jeff Golick:

(Thanks for the deep dive, @LG. Listener Dean would approve, I think.)
  10:04am DJpeterDE:

I love these “dark woods” albums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

@fred, that is barbaric. Please opt out, if at all possible!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Jeff Golick:

@doc: yeah, got to see (via zoom) and hear (same) Marty and Roy Nathanson. And a couple others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am doctorjazz:

Me too, DJpeterDE!
  10:08am DJpeterDE:

Fred this horrifies me! University of Michigan grad students are striking over similar concerns
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am fred:

@Jeff: only way to bail out would be to quit (with no health benefits). I'll just go on and trust my inner being to be repellent enough
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am listener james from westwood:

22nd for autumn. But tomorrow is Earth, Wind & Fire Day, so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am doctorjazz:

If your temple keeps the service posted, Jeff, I'd love to hear that part of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Jeff Golick:

Ah, yes, @ljfw -- first things first!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Jeff Golick:

@doc: will look for a link...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am listener james from westwood:

For a second I thought I was being Incepted there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, that really woke me up the first time I listened to this record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Jeff Golick:

I'd welcome being incepted right about now.
Avatar 10:23am duke:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Jeff Golick:

And @Stork! Nice hat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am doctorjazz:

Love the pic, Stork!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am doctorjazz:

Afraid to look at the Times front page...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am listener james from westwood:

Evergreen instinct these days. . .
  10:34am DJpeterDE:

Wait Albert Brooks also does avant jazz? (JK)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Jeff Golick:

"Nightcaller was originally released in 1978. With the exception of a handful of tracks on Bill Dixon compilations, this is the only officially-released recording documenting the Black Music Division at Bennington College."
Avatar 10:39am Stork Pie Hat:

Hey Jeff, the playlist looks great! Is the new Kenzo system enabling the extra spiffiness?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Yeah! Being able to pre-enter songs makes it much easier to load up some other elements, e.g., cover art. Hail, Kenzo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am doctorjazz:

The covers are nice to have posted, seems like more work, but appreciated.
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

Yes, it's a nice touch if you are able to do it.
  10:43am DJpeterDE:

Ah, Bennington
Avatar 10:44am Stork Pie Hat:

I'm tellin' ya! Kenzo has changed the world! Get Oslo on the phone! GREEN SHIRT!!! YAY! I love Hot Chocolate's version, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am doctorjazz:

Sharp turn! (Cool demo!)
Avatar 10:45am Listener Gregory:

Bennington College is *really* small, so it's impressive that they had something like that even for a while.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am fred:

Kenzo does so much to make the station what it is
Avatar 10:47am Stork Pie Hat:

Amen and amen, fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

RIP cellist and Bennington alum Beverly Dyer (she was on that Arthur Brooks LP). She died in June of last year. Also a graduate of Yale Law School. www.legacy.com...
Avatar 10:50am DJpeterDE:

I have a friend who was in the group of tenured faculty fired by Bennington's president in 1994 without warning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am chresti:

Hi Jeff and Outies!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am chresti:

Avatar 10:53am Listener Gregory:

Good words, Jeff.
Avatar 10:55am DJpeterDE:

^^ Hear here
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Jeff Golick:

Hellloooo, @chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Doug Schulkind:

Talk of Bennington leads to me to thoughts of Milford. I hope he is being warmed by some nice chamomile tea just now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am doctorjazz:

Tikun Olam, very well described, Jeff! If each individual moved the needle just a bit, collectively a big fix ("tikun") can occur.
Avatar 11:01am DJpeterDE:

I'm near Philly so I'm looking forward to visiting the Milford Graves exhibit at ICA. (will try to pick a time with low traffic, which for an art gallery is not usually that hard)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Jeff Golick:

A world in need of repair.

Yes, Milford needs some positive vibrations!
Avatar 11:02am DJpeterDE:

FYI, for a moment the web playlist showed the Togashi entry three times. When I refreshed it went back to just one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @DJPeter - got a little trigger happy when I saw nothing happening...then pulled back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am doctorjazz:

Another track with shades of Dolphy, nice!
Avatar 11:05am DJpeterDE:

'I mean, if the universe is vibration, and after Einstein who’s gonna deny it, energy sifts down matter and before it gets there it manifests as sound. So playing music—playing music well,” he corrected himself, “it’s like taking an active part in the future" -- The Bear Comes Home by Rafi Zabor
Avatar 11:06am Listener Gregory:

Did Einstein say the universe is vibration? I think I missed that.
Avatar 11:06am DJpeterDE:

Maybe not in those exact words
Avatar 11:09am Listener Gregory:

Ian Drury told us that "Einstein said that atoms are the littlest." (He also noted that Einstein could hardly count as witless.)
Now I don't know WHO to believe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am doctorjazz:

Going to catch a bit of the Zoom service from my Temple, thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

Take care, @doc! Shana tovah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

"This new Joe McPhee collection is utterly marvelous," he uttered.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Jeff Golick:

Poughkeepsie's own!
Avatar 11:16am DJpeterDE:

Okay I was joking about Arthur/Albert Brooks before but "Sarah Manning" only means "Orphan Black" to me.
Avatar 11:21am Listener Gregory:

Does anyone recognize the club depicted on the Manning/Ward record? It looks wonderful. Tell me it's really horrible, so I won't feel bad about not being able to go there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am fred:

@Doug: Aren't "Joe McPhee" and "marvelous" recognized as synonyms already?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am listener james from westwood:

ngl the daily GTDR emails have helped me distinguish what day it actually is more than once in the gray expanse of the past 6 months
Avatar 11:24am Stork Pie Hat:

Re: solo drumming/percussion albums: Andrew Cyrille's first one was a beaut. Don't know if Jack DeJohnette ever did a whole album of solos, but every time he takes a solo, I'm happy.
Avatar 11:27am Listener Gregory:

The classical repertoire has a number of good solo percussion compositions, and records from that tradition are not bad, IMHO. There was a solo William Winant LP a couple of years ago that I really liked (from the Downtown Music Gallery).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: same

@Stork: absolutely crucial names!
@LG: yes yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

@LG: re that club -- "the Hundred Years Gallery in Hoxton, East London. They descended underground into the long and narrow basement, where even the slightest sounds reverberated off the brick walls and concrete floor....All proceeds for the month of September 2020 will go to Hundred Years Arts, a not-for-profit Community Interest Company supporting experimental music and the visual arts in Hoxton, East London."
Avatar 11:32am hyde:

I have that Jerome Cooper solo drum lp, and it's aces
Avatar 11:33am Listener Gregory:

Thanks, Jeff. It looks great. Somehow I saw the pound sign in the prices and yet didn't conclude that it was in Britain. Need to turn the heat up more, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am chresti:

I love solo drumming, thanks hyde and stork pie, I'll check 'm out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

Another great one, @hyde!
Avatar 11:36am Listener Gregory:

Seems like Pavone lost her "essica."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Jeff Golick:

(Maybe I should give the drummer more.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @LG, she seems to go by J. Pavone for the string ensemble stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am fred:

Branca! Nice
  11:42am Dean:

I don't think that Manning/Ward cover depicts the venue where it was recorded.
shorturl.at/acuvJ
  11:42am Ike:

Hi Jeff, Fred, and all y’all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Jeff Golick:

I am intrigued, @Dean! Maybe there's a back entrance...in some woods?

@Ike!
  11:45am Dean:

There's an alley (a mews?), nothing resembling the wooded space on the cover.
Avatar 11:45am Listener Gregory:

@Dean, unless the picture shows the back door? But I suspect you are right.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am listener james from westwood:

I have no upper limit for tracks like this Branca or the Seven-Storey one earlier. It's making the dry-ass healthcare-management copyediting a lot easier.
  11:46am Ike:

(Now I’m wondering which other languages besides English have only a regional slang second-person plural pronoun.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am fred:

I almost died going to a Branca show: I tried to get on a train but my sleeve got caught and I couldn't get in or out. I finally got it out and bounced on the train and a railing as people were screaming. I survived, got on the next train and saw the show, which was amazing (Symphony #8)
  11:48am Dean:

Nearby is St. Mary's Secret Garden, which may very well be the depicted scene.
Avatar 11:49am Listener Gregory:

@fred, that is dedication!
Avatar 11:52am Stork Pie Hat:

I saw Branca's Symphony #6 about 25 years ago. My hearing returned last Thursday.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Jeff Golick:

@J! totheK!
Avatar 11:56am Listener Gregory:

It takes some guts to do your own big band version of a Duke Ellington song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am fred:

@Stork: they are rebuilding the place, no word about whether Branca tore it down, but it sure played a part
Avatar 11:58am hyde:

Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am listener james from westwood:

Thanks, Jeff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am WR:

Sun Ra could be amazingly tongue in cheek but loving in using old swing and dance strophes. Thank you Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Doug Schulkind:

My wife's previous boyfriend, Tom Miller, was in Branca's 100 guitar conflagration.
