Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02am fred:

Good morning Jeff and out headed people
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am WR:

Ok, I'm awake. Getting ready to go out with DO in my ear. Hello all.
Avatar 9:07am holland oats:

yo d:o! peeps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am fred:

It has now been over 6 months since I last went to a live show. But I have bought 55 tickets for the coming season. If it happens
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Jeff Golick:

Greetings, @fred!
Out out, dear @WR!
Wassup, @holland oats!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Jeff Golick:

I saw footage on social media of some cool live music events happening around Brooklyn, outside, but I wasn't aware of them ahead of time.
  9:14am DJpeterDE:

Vibes and clarinet duet doesn’t count does it @ListenerGregory?
Avatar 9:15am Listener Gregory:

Good morning all. I love the title of that A Trio cut.
  9:15am DJpeterDE:

Avatar 9:15am Listener Gregory:

Close, but Adolph Sax would not approve, @DJpeter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Hey, there, @DJpeterDE and @Listener Gregory!
Perhaps not counting in that duo configuration we were discussing, but that's definitely how I got here.
Avatar 9:16am Listener Gregory:

I saw your tweet! It was a high moment in my day. (I think Jeff retweeted it.)
Avatar 9:16am holland oats:

there were a bunch of really loud motorcycles circling my block at 2am, does that count as a live event?
  9:18am DJpeterDE:

@LG Didn’t know your handle or I’d have @‘d you
  9:19am DJpeterDE:

Brown-Hampel cd just arrived in mail late yesterday
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am ParUbi:

Hey all, hi Jeff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Jeff Golick:

I'm not sure if it's pandemic related at all, but I have noticed an overall increase in the number of vehicles in the city that operate as though their main purpose is to annoy with loud sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Jeff Golick:

Great to see you, @ParUbi!
Avatar 9:22am Listener Gregory:

My Twitter account is closed to everyone but a few close friends and colleagues, because my remarks are not sufficiently curated. As readers of this comment board will not be surprised to hear.
Avatar 9:22am holland oats:

this weekend was bad - no cops, nothing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Uncle Michael:

good morning
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Uncle Michael!
  9:26am DJpeterDE:

@LG I get it. My Twitter is public, my IG is private
Avatar 9:28am Listener Gregory:

I think the "A" Trio should do a series of songs based on different conjugations of the Ornette title: The Shape of Jazz that Had Come, that Was to Have Come, that Would Have Come, etc.
No, I am not a professional record producer!
  9:28am DJpeterDE:

Evans to Ceccaldi... great segue
Avatar 9:30am hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am Jeff Golick:

@LG: "A" Trio is good with titles. That same record I played contains a tune called "Tomorrow, I'll Make Breakfast."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @DJpeterDE!

Howdy, @hyde!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am fred:

Not much live music coming here though: we've done such a shitty job containing the virus that anyone playing here has to quarantine for a couple of weeks after leaving. Musicians already tended to avoid France, this isn't making it any better
  9:44am DJpeterDE:

I’ve been saying his name Heh-LI-us all this time
Avatar 9:44am holland oats:

worchester! (joe kennedy iii spelling)
Avatar 9:46am Der Stork:

Well, Hi!
Avatar 9:47am Listener Gregory:

Yes, I've been pronouncing it the DJpeter way too. Not based on any direct knowledge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Jeff Golick:

Don't trust me on Helias! I have no direct knowledge, and it's two against one.

Hi, @Stork!

@holland oats: definitely a low point in Kennedy/Mass. relations.
  9:52am Doug Schulkind:

Hi hi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Jeff Golick:

This is @Doug, this is!
Avatar 9:57am hyde:

this tune is dynamite
  9:58am Doug Schulkind:

Make it 3 against 1, Jeff. Looks like you could use some 3-in-1 oil.
  10:02am tranewreck:

Ha! Al West got the “festival” up and running. We shared a small cottage on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester and some of the artists stayed with us or at least dropped by before the performance.
Marty Ehrlich(my childhood friend) played while still at NEC.
Jeanne Lee and Gunter Hampel spent the night
I didn’t know that there recordings of these performances that included Byard Lancaster, Max Roach, Joseph Jarman and Famoudou Don Moye- (we went and saw an action film the night before they performed)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Jeff Golick:

Fantastic, @tranewreck. Thanks for the full picture, and recollection!
Avatar 10:10am Listener Gregory:

This Toshikuki Miyama recording is impressive. It certainly slipped under the radar in 1976, even with the Columbia release.
  10:13am tranewreck:

Leroy Jenkins brought his sons with him for a visit to the “country”
Byard borrowed my sax neck strap and mailed it back with a very kind note
Jeanne Lee wouldn’t let her son eat the biscuits that we made with dinner - concerned about the processed flour
Avatar 10:16am Der Stork:

That is indeed some first-class recollectin,', tranewreck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, I'm agog over here, @tranewreck. Agog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Jeff Golick:

Meanwhile, @tranewreck, while you're here: do you recall how the announcers said Mark Helias's last name?
Avatar 10:23am Listener Gregory:

If I can make it past the Covid, I'm going to let the processed flour have its way with me. Only fair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Jeff Golick:

Yes, I'm pretty much 90% processed at this point. I do respect the hell out of that level of concern re what we put into our bodies, though.
Avatar 10:30am Der Stork:

You can never have too many Gogs, JG.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Jeff Golick:

Gary Sullivan doing a proper Toots send-off on the main stream of WFMU right now, fyi!
  10:33am tranewreck:

I don’t recall how Helias’ name was pronounced but I’ll reach out to Al for details.Al West was the driving force for the series and deserves all the credit. John Vocci did some fantastic black and white photos of the performers but not sure if they were ever released. Some of the funding came from Meet The Composers Arts grants.
Marty came a couple of times, once with an ailing Julius Hemphill
Roach gave a master class on how to listen to drumming
Al was ‘CUW’s station manager
I did a cooking show which was fairly novel in ‘77-78
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am fred:

A DJ actively hinting that another show airing at the same time is worth listening to. Only on WFMU
Avatar 10:34am duke:

Hi Jeff and Sunday and other day listeners
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @tranewreck. Cooking, eh?

@fred: I was considering playing some Maytalls this morning and then thought to check over at Gary's place, and it's wall-to-wall Toots.

Greetings, @duke!
Avatar 10:42am hyde:

yeah, i'm sure gonna go back and listen to Gary's Toots tribute
Avatar 10:46am Listener Gregory:

Thanks to @DoctorJazz, wherever you are.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am doctorjazz:

Hi, @LG, JeffG, and you all. Been lurking, haven't posted in over a week. Lost a close family member (brother in law, sister's husband), services, Shiva, sadness. Have Been here from the start, loving (and clicky starring) everything today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

This past Friday John Allen and I both played tracks from Alan Braufman's new record within a few minutes of each other. Apparently.
Avatar 10:53am Listener Gregory:

Condolences, @doctorj, and thanks again for all you have done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

So sorry to hear that, @doctorjazz. May his memory be a blessing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Jeff Golick:

@Doug, your comment reminds me why I'm also not playing any Alan Braufman today: Scott MacDowell is sitting in for Jeff Conklin & The Avant Ghetto this evening, playing Braufman, including an interview he did with him. 10pm ET.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am WR:

Somehow knew nothing of this Lowell Davidson Trio recordings. Thank you for choosing this one. With Milford Graves too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am fred:

Condolences doctorjazz
@Jeff: Is your son's college still doing in person classes? Hopefully there was no outbreak there
  10:57am DJpeterDE:

@DJ I’ve forgotten the Hebrew words, but the sentiment is the same in English: so sorry to hear your news, condolences to your sister and her family
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am WR:

Condolences doctorjazz. Thank you for letting us know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am doctorjazz:

Thanks, all.
The Japanese set was very interesting, all new to me. Midorikawa track reminded me of the Strung Trio of NY, butt predated them. Wonder if they heard the Japanese group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

@fred: thanks for asking; his campus has been handling it very well so far, and they're down to zero active cases (given current levels of testing, anyway). Most of his classes are virtual, though, except for one that is meeting outdoors, under a tent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Doug Schulkind:

Dear and deep condolences to you, doctorjazz.
Avatar 11:02am Listener Gregory:

An elementary school near me set up stumps in a circle outside, so that students could get out of the class and (I assume) take off the masks for part of the day. That can only go on for so long, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am doctorjazz:

Our families are very close, holidays, vacations together. Cancer, age 62.
Sorry if I'm bringing down the thread...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Jeff Golick:

Gonna have to make some painful cuts in this GP set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

Not at all, @doc. Glad you can share here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
More Alan Braufman is the very best reason to play even more Alan Braufman. Ooh, I just thought of a great name for a radio show: Heavy Rotations. STOP! No one gets to use it so I can when I'm reincarnated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am doctorjazz:

One good thing, younger daughter graduated college and was starting her 1st teaching job (teaching secondary ed, biology). It was originally in person, made her (and us) very nervous, but changed to alli online. 1st 2 days went well.
Avatar 11:07am Listener Gregory:

The obituaries of Peacock reminded me of the strange marital entanglements of Paul & Carla Bley, Gary and Annette Peacock (+ Steve Swallow). They all seem to have remained on good terms.
  11:07am DJpeterDE:

I’ll pick up your slack, Jeff.
Just realizing that GP exemplifies this quality of deliberation and spontaneity (that for me also describes Altschul, Bley, Steve Lacy but GP in particular).
Of course “free time” has something to do with it
Avatar 11:08am hyde:

this is a trio of people i tend to think of as somehow underrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

...and yet they still went with "Virtuosi" for this one, @hyde.
Avatar 11:09am hyde:

@jg i know i think of them that way!
  11:10am DJpeterDE:

LG, yes I’ve wondered often whether Swallow met Carla during the Giuffre years, likewise if Paul met Annette through Gary or independently
  11:11am DJpeterDE:

I have Amy Beal’s Carla bio on my bedside table but haven’t really cracked it yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Jeff Golick:

The next number features Annette, Gary, and Paul all together. Weird vibes, but all seemingly comfortable with it?
  11:12am DJpeterDE:

I mean it was the 60s. Why assume that the pairs were just pairs?
  11:13am DJpeterDE:

(No inside info, I should stress.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Jeff Golick:

Welp, I made the coffee too early this morning and now the pot has turned itself off.
Avatar 11:22am Listener Gregory:

I don't think this cut is going to keep you awake then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Jeff Golick:

I don't know what you mdljkffaldjkgljkg....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am doctorjazz:

Peacock also was part odd the very "inside" Standards Trio with Jarrett, went both ways...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

Heading off to the yoga studio (i.e., the living room floor). Will have Downward Facing Peacock continue to serenade. Thank you, Jeff. Peace and love to all.
Avatar 11:27am Listener Gregory:

Jeff, I have unsuccessfully tried to guess the clarinetist on this cut. Can you give a hint?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

He's a jewel in the lotus, LG.
Avatar 11:28am Listener Gregory:

Emerald Flower! I never would have guessed!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: will continue to play music to bend to.
  11:37am DJpeterDE:

I can report that yoga music is also effective when reading Hegel
Avatar 11:37am Listener Gregory:

I would never have bought this record in a hundred years, but it is actually quite good, IMHO.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am alanr:

@Doug: sorry if my imagination went crazy imagining you in the dog position with the added image of the beautiful plume of color emanating from the highest point in that position.
  11:39am DJpeterDE:

Ah, add Motian to the list of spontaneous-deliberate!
  11:41am DJpeterDE:

@alanr that’s the sum given the drummer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am doctorjazz:

Man, talk about reflective...
Avatar 11:42am Listener Gregory:

I often felt that Peacock has been underrecorded (e.g., in the Standards Trio), but he is right up front here. Very nice recording as a whole (Tethered Moon).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

@LG: Richard Williams wrote about that record recently, brought it back to mind.

Hey, there, @alanr! How goes?
Avatar 11:43am spodiodi:

good morning, Jeff and everyone!
glad to be catching the tail of the show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Jeff Golick:

Morning, @spodiodi! Glad you're here for it!
  11:48am DJpeterDE:

Koglmann’s trumpet (and I Fall in Love Too Easily) has just made me realize that Annette Peacock is an abstraction of Miles Davis balladry... itself an abstraction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am doctorjazz:

Great show, Jeff, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

My pleasure, @doc. I hope you and your family are getting some good support during this time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Jeff Golick:

Interesting, @DJpeterDE!
