I must be in the fron row! Great seats, huh, buddy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:04am WR:

Hi folks, busy day here, partner's birthday celebration day. Will be listening.

Ra! Ra! he's our man,
If Sun can't do it, nobody can.
Hello, Jeff, D:O-ers, and the D:O curious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am doctorjazz:

Going to brave a live Kol Nidre service tonight (outdoor, parking lot of the nearby Jewish Community Center.
  9:06am DJpeterDE:

Good morning! Tones for atoning.
Avatar 9:06am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, fellow bots!
  9:06am Rock Ridge Chess Club:

My neighbors can't seem to get to church soon enough whenever my Destination (is) Out in the front yard. Cheers
Avatar 9:09am Wolfgang von Storch:

Be safe, DrJ! Folks masking and distancing there?
  9:09am DJpeterDE:

Wouldn’t the first repetition be the second chorus?
Avatar 9:10am Listener Gregory:

I would like to retract all my comments last year, which have offended so many. Also, any in which I promised to do something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Jeff Golick:

Oh man, we got a minyan now.
Welcome welcome welcome, @DJpeterDE! @Listener Gregory! @Rock Ridge Chess Club! @Wolfgang von Storkle! Stream papa @Sem! @hyde! @WR! Wotta crew.
  9:12am Doug Schulkind:

I’ve got the whitefish. Who has the bagels?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am doctorjazz:

Wolfgang, thanks for the concern; it's outdoors, socially isolated seating, masks required, and I'm sure they'll follow through (and we'll leave of they don't).
Avatar 9:14am Wolfgang von Storch:

@Doc: that's the ticket!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Jeff Golick:

Happy birtday to @WR's partner, btw!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Jeff Golick:

@Doug! Smoke 'em if you got 'em.
Fish, that is.
Avatar 9:17am Wolfgang von Storch:

Joyous tidings to your SO, WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am doctorjazz:

Amen, @LG!
And Happy Birthday to your partner, @WR!
Avatar 9:18am Wolfgang von Storch:

This is gorgeous sound I am hearing!
Avatar 9:19am Listener Gregory:

Tried to make some comments in Aramaic, but the spell-check keeps messing them up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am WR:

Zorn sounding a bit cinematic.
Avatar 9:22am Listener Gregory:

As I read up on this, it seems that Jeff, as our leader, must ask the Lord to pardon our iniquities. That could be a pretty heavy lift.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am doctorjazz:

Went out for a birthday dinner with my SO last night, the immediate family, and her brother at a table 6 feet away.. Nice to celebrate with a real person we don't live with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am WR:

What, the Zorn arrangement was a quartet? All that texture from 4 musicians?

Thank you for the tidings, will pass them along. We are opting for high end take out tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Jeff Golick:

The Zorn had 83-odd musicians going, @WR! I will not be reading them aloud at the next break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am doctorjazz:

Link to the 3rd Kik Notre, Voigt/Braxton...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am doctorjazz:

(Think Braxton carried the melody mostly...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @doc! Added the link to the playlist.
Avatar 9:35am Listener Gregory:

Looking forward to hearing you pronounce this title, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Jeff Golick:

I'm open to suggestions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am doctorjazz:

And a link to the musicians on the Zorn Kol Nidrei (he's recorded it a number of times, there is a quartet version)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am doctorjazz:

(Which is also a purchase link).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am coelacanth∅:

good morning Jeff, OUTies
  9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Danke for this gorgeous number, Jeff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Jeff Golick:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Jeff Golick:

My pleasure, @Doug; all thanks to Patrick Shiroishi and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

(Oh, wait. That was a pun.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Jeff Golick:

Thanks for the links, @doc!
Avatar 10:00am duke:

Hi Jeff and everyone. Nice sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am Jeff Golick:

Yo, @duke!
Avatar 10:04am Listener Gregory:

Idea for a future show: Play only cuts you have never heard. Then, a few minutes into each one, stop it, saying, "What IS this shit? I'm not playing this another second!" and then put on the next one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am doctorjazz:

Just got this box (haven't gotten to it yet), do have the LP of The Bunch album (I think there are 2) which are fun.
Avatar 10:09am Listener Gregory:

Sounds like the Louvin Sisters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am doctorjazz:

Trying to decide on what to get of Kirk Knuffke's music. Loved his show with Dave Sewelson yesterday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am doctorjazz:

Irene Trudel played a some Duck Baker, and had him on her show a while back. He's amazing! (I'm into finding links this morning)
  10:22am DJpeterDE:

This song is not making me feel great about 2021

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am ParUbi:

Giant Sand! They were my first indie "discovery." I was so smug and proud of myself. Still love them (him)!
Avatar 10:28am hyde:

i had sort of forgotten about Giant Sand

Morning Jeff and outies! On my first coffee..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am doctorjazz:

Coffee, that's what I need now (drag out of bed...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

I saw Bo Diddley open for the Clash in '79. It was a most pleasant evening.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Jeff Golick:

@chresti! You just reminded me that I haven't had any coffee yet! Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Jeff Golick:

Where was that, Doug?
Avatar 10:40am hyde:

i did a full relisten of Sandanista awhile back. it didn't hold up as well as i'd hoped
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Jeff Golick:

Yeah, @hyde. Too much of a muchness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

The promotional poster for that tour proclaimed the Clash to be "Wholesomely Violent."

It was at the Ontario Theatre in Washington, DC.
  10:41am Martinibomb:

Hey Jeff, Doug, chresti! Fellow listeners :)
Avatar 10:42am hyde:

@JG there's a lot of stuff on there that i used to love, but is really just filler
  10:42am Martinibomb:

Hah jeff! It's a jazz show and you can't improvise the set? LoL just givin ya hard time hee hee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am WR:

The set worked for listeners, just made you work harder.
Avatar 10:43am Listener Gregory:

Wait! The Bunch = Richard & Linda Thompson????
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Jeff Golick:

Hey-o, @Martinibomb! I make no claims re improv ability. That's what the records are for!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

@LG: apparently they were both part of the Bunch, yeah?
Avatar 10:53am hyde:

The Bunch is them with Trevor Lucas, the dude from Fotheringay
Avatar 10:59am DJpeterDE:

"[the movie] Personal Problems was the result of a collaboration between Ishmael Reed, Bill Gunn, and Steve Cannon." Quite the team!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Jeff Golick:

Yup, @DJpeterDE! Never seen the film, though have been enjoying the record.
Avatar 11:03am hyde:

i think this is the part of the show where i am contractually obligated to say that John Abercrombie is underrated
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Jeff Golick:

I'll second that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Brian in UK:

Hello Jeff.

Doug, sounds most efficacious.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Doug Schulkind:

His premature Gary Peacock RIP aside, Jack DeJohnette's arrival on Twitter has been a joy to behold.
Avatar 11:06am DJpeterDE:

I haven't seen it either. Knowing what I do about independent film in the late 70s, my sense is that it's one of a number of films between filmmakers and writers of color -- with the writers bringing an interest in film as a mass media form. But the market at the time wasn't particularly receptive to rough-hewn movies commenting on mainstream tastes, that's the kind of movie that is "rediscovered" later -- if by "rediscovered" you mean "still not very widely seen but the artsy types celebrate it now"
Avatar 11:07am DJpeterDE:

@doug agreed, although the RIP was not premature we now know
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Jeff Golick:

Hello, @Brian in UK!
Avatar 11:09am DJpeterDE:

I hadn't realized Don Byron intersected with this era of Hemingway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Jeff Golick:

@DJpeterDE: I still haven't seen Ganja and Hess.
Avatar 11:12am Listener Gregory:

To me, Don Byron is the most inexplicable major musician in the business. He is so talented, yet he has disappeared more or less from view, even while having major label releases, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am chresti:

Hi MB!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Jeff Golick:

Hi, @Uncle Michael!
Avatar 11:18am DJpeterDE:

@LG that's interesting, now that you mention it he doesn't perform in public that often. I share your sense that he doesn't get mentioned in the jazz press that much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am doctorjazz:

For a long while Byron was omnipresent, @LG. But he did seem to fade from view after a while.
Avatar 11:20am DJpeterDE:

@jeff I don't subscribe to Criterion Channel because there aren't enough hours in the day, but i believe they're showing Ganja & Hess and maybe other Gunn movies right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Jeff Golick:

Have eyed the Criterion Channel for years, but never went for it, for the same reason you mention, @DJpeterDE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am doctorjazz:

Google days Hanja and Hess are also on Amazon Prime, off you get that.
Avatar 11:26am Listener Gregory:

For what it's worth, this is very good music to wash socks by.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am doctorjazz:

(My error earlier, The Bunch did one album. I was thinking of another project, Morris On, with some of the same English folk crew.
Avatar 11:30am Listener Gregory:

@DJpeter, it seems his last album as a leader was in 2006 (a tribute to Jr. Walker, which I never saw), though he has a duet album from 2018. I think he must have consciously withdrawn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am WR:

Way back: thank you for the Fisher treatment of Coxhill. Doubt if i would have recognized Coxhill but having been forewarned could discern his phrasing in some of the lines.
Avatar 11:33am Hams:

glad i got to hear that, jeff. good morning.
  11:34am ?:

Byron's hanging out at MIT: https://arts.mit.edu/artists/don-byron/
Avatar 11:34am DJpeterDE:

@LG I do wonder how much the pressure to keep producing affects artist's creativity. (thinking of that dumb Spotify guy.) Byron was with Blue Note, and those days they were putting a lot of pressure on everyone to put out albums with "concepts." I wonder if the Junior Walker album came out of that.
  11:34am Dean:

  11:34am Dean:

That Junior Walker album is killer.
Avatar 11:37am hyde:

Dean, I just saw that MIT announcement about Byron last week. I'm hoping maybe by spring they get to do one of those Kresge auditorium things live again. that would be quite a space to see him in
  11:39am Dean:

Don't know the space, hyde. I saw Byron with Uri Caine outdoors at the Skirball Center in Brentwood, just up the freeway from the Getty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am doctorjazz:

Not sure about that @DJpeterDE, Byron was doing all sorts of projects before that (Mickey Katz, Bug Music, A Fine Line, more)
  11:40am Dean:

Nu Blaxploitation with Biz Markie. Friggin' hilarious.
Avatar 11:41am hyde:

@Dean Kresge is an Eero Saarinen building. It's super cool www.archdaily.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Jeff Golick:

Good morning, @Hams! Glad you're here, hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

And hello, @Dean!
Avatar 11:44am DJpeterDE:

Bley & Peacock really had this "playing a form together out of tempo" thing down! If Milford Graves hadn't already existed, Paul Bley would've invented him.
  11:44am Dean:

Unmistakably Saarinen! One of the few pleasures of flying into Dulles.
Avatar 11:45am Wolfgang von Storch:

Slight correction on the Stork club dress-code as just announced by Jeff G.: "Shirt", "shoes," as well as "pants" are after all cultural constructs, and can be loosely defined by the wearer. And yes, that means you can come in the buff. Comfort is the Club watchword, after all. Hope to see you then - here's your keycard: wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:46am Listener Gregory:

After last week's show, I got out Peacock's 1982 Voice from the Past album. I had totally forgotten that it had Jan Garbarek & Tomasz Stanko, neither of whom I would associate with him now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am doctorjazz:

Uri Caine, another of the great project organizers.
  11:48am Dean:

In the buff, and yet, not being a cultural construct, a tie is de rigueur.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

@Stork! My bad. You've clearly updated the guidelines. Plus I remain as steadfastly uptight as ever.
Avatar 11:49am DJpeterDE:

@doc yeah sure. my point is that record companies in general and blue note in particular pushed that approach. in those days, blue note wanted everybody to do "standards" records. they even pushed James Newton to do standards after all those records with his own compositions, and his response was: if i have to do standards, i'm going to do obscure Ellington and Mingus.
Avatar 11:52am Sem:

Head down in wok for the duration of D:O, but whistling along. Thx, Jeff. See you and all again before long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Jeff Golick:

Thanks, @Sem! Take care, until next time.
Avatar 11:54am DJpeterDE:

@sem don't get burned
Avatar 11:54am Listener Gregory:

For the third time in three days, I have noticed that there is a headless bird on my deck. I think a neighborhood cat comes by to snack on it from time to time. I always think, "I can't dispose of this right now, but I definitely have to tomorrow."
Well, I can't leave Paul Bley to dispose of a headless bird, but I certainly can tomorrow.

Clear the decks, Jeff? OK! I'm going to do it! Thanks!
Avatar 11:58am DJpeterDE:

@LG i've found headless bunnies too. i also guessed that a cat had been snacking on it but now i'm worried about bird and bunny zombies
