  6:11pm David in London:

Mark, you may not necessarily be up to speed on student grade assessment here in the U.K. this summer, but an algorithm was very publicly applied and it ended up as a spectacular clusterfuck of epic proportions sufficient to force a rapid government climb-down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm Mark Hurst:

@DiL I actually got the audio of the protest chant - muting every third word makes it not really usable on-air - but YES i'd like to talk about that situation at some point

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Webhamster Henry:

BTW the intelligent Robot Takeover and subsequent slaughter of humans is the central plot point of DC Comics' Superman villain Braniac.(back in the 60s)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm chris:

but the changes to the night sky will be kinda cool for the final humans on earth.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm iiibeat:

If we don't redistribute wealth and put AI into subservience for the benefit of all . . The oligarchs will exploit their dominance toward the chance of a Matrix like subservience. Human batteries.

Hi all!
Mark, have you ever read anything by Greg Egan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm (Murakami Whywolf))):

Sure, but what about one-loop instability in the very metric itself?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm Mark Hurst:

@Chud not yet! Is there something in particular by Egan you'd recommend?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm iiibeat:

David Bohm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm Bas NL:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm iiibeat:

The film "Infinite Potential" about him is on YouTube

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm coelacanth∅:

hahaha the universe will not ever end! what a silly idea! the idea contradicts the definition of the word "universe".

...our little world, as far as we can imagine it may end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm PaulRobeson1920:

In regards to The Bomb- Einstein cautioned that "we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe." Nuclear armament is madness... And so it goes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:34pm ultradamno:

Reminds me of the initial theory that the atomic bomb might set the atmosphere on fire.
Avatar 6:35pm northguineahills:

thanks for addresseing (con)CERN conspiracies....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm Carmichael:

The universe may not ever end, but mankind can make it stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36pm PaulRobeson1920:

What The Bomb will do is kill every women, man, and child east of the Mississippi river in the first ten minutes of a nuclear conflict! (To paraphrase Kennedy)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:38pm coelacanth∅:

and a "parallel universe" would be just part of the universe.
they really should come up with a term that makes sense.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39pm ultradamno:

@paul Well, sure. There are upsides.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm (((Murakami Whywolf):

Yeah, many-worlds is basically useless for science fiction because all these universes are causally disconnected from each other, with no communication or travel between them possible—the hypothesis doesn't give you anything useful otherwise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:40pm coelacanth∅:

ultra d haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42pm coelacanth∅:

"mars colonizers" are more foolish than "flat earthers"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Carmichael:

We can always just shift to another universe ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm ultradamno:

Venus may have once been more habitable than Mars ever was but for global warming www.nasa.gov...
Avatar 6:44pm northguineahills:

If quatum foam actually shows anything (according to theorists), there are other 'universes' w/ different physical properties, (not to be confused w/ the multiverse theory)>
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:44pm coelacanth∅:

i guess "everything" could end, as long as it remains true that the entire universe revolves around humans. (particularly humans who reside in the united states)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm PaulRobeson1920:

Buckminster Fuller wrote about spaceship earth. We have enough on Earth for 100% of humanity. We must move from investments in Killingly towards livingry... Where is that vision today?
  6:50pm Sporadic Disturbance:

But .... humankind isn't of any importance in the grand scheme of things. We are simply irrelevant. Let's not kid ourselves. Enjoy what you have for now. It isn't so bad.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm (((Murakami Whywolf):

Well, they (and other rich people) have long been pushing the line that they are the Great Guys From Whom All Blessings Flow. That is to say, Randroidism, to one extent or another.

However, I must say that I am a transhumanist. Why? Because I've met humans, and I know one of them from the inside, and I don't think a Serengeti Mark II brain is adequate to the level of power we've got.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bezos and the gang probably want to start a Rollerball league next year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm ultradamno:

Though it seems to me if you put your consciousness in another body/robot/'puter whatever and your body dies, you're still dead.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm PaulRobeson1920:

I wonder if the Mars folks have read Any Ray Bradbury?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm Carmichael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm (Murakami Whywolf))):

If you like Niven, just imagine that Pournelle wrote most of that book. They've also got one, "Fallen Angels", written with Michael Flynn, in which Global Winter has happened, and environmentalists who wanted to limit carbon emissions are the villains.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm coelacanth∅:

Paul they've already arranged a "welcoming party". barbecue and everything
  6:53pm Listener Robert:

"Lucifer's Hammer" was also the most hilariously politically incorrect novel imaginable! I won't spoil it, but by the time you get to the last pages, you'll know. I'm pretty sure Jerry Pournelle did intend the satire.

Think Exploration is definitely in our nature

Terraforming another undeserving planet is so far out ahead of us @ present it's essentially Captain Nemo pathology to consider it within our foreseeable grasp in any probable way.

Thanks, everyone! I have lots more to read now.
  6:56pm David in London:

When those Thai kids were trapped in that watery cave, which came damned near becoming their watery grave, Musk was babbling on uselessly about mini submarines. It actually took a couple of highly skilled divers, who managed to effect the rescue. That was a classic corrective to the tech myth, there no substitute for a skilled, brave person with a desire to help others in the physical world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm Mark Hurst:

@coel agreed!

@DiL good example
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm (Murakami Whywolf))):

Listener Robert:
No, I think Pournelle might have hammed it up to better troll decent folk, but I think he devoutly (he was some sort of Catholic, I gather, even though there's this story I heard in which he was bent on adultery) believed in the opinions of the 'Good' Guys in that book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm ultradamno:

Those of you who migth want to know, I'll put in vertical spoiler space re Lucifer:

The heroes use nuclear power, fight with poison gas, and wind up enslaving the bad guys, who are mostly black.

end
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm PaulRobeson1920:

Good stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm (((Murakami Whywolf):

Yup, I still say Pournelle was laying it on thick to troll, but basically believed all that stuff might be appropriate. Note that from the early '80s on he was on one or two 'defence' advisory boards.

As an example, I'd say that he would firmly deny being racist, but blame their culture and White Liberals for making those black people the bad guys not up to Saving the World.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:05pm Bas NL:
