Listener comments!

  10:02pm Matt:

Good evening Julie
Avatar 10:02pm WR:

Well ok. I'll be listening as I drag my idiot self through finishing taxes. Dinner break now. All irrelevant to the music at hand.
Avatar 10:02pm Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey Julie! Sorry I just announced Kris but it's you!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Double-Dark Night week! Yes! Happy Tuesday, Julie... and everybody!
Avatar 10:03pm WR:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Julie:

that's okay Daya! I'm here till 1!
Avatar 10:21pm WR:

Since I am in no position to offer you a variety of samples, will not proselytize. ;))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm Julie:

the drink must be black though!
Avatar 10:23pm WR:

Double black.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nice with the melody this McCarthy fellow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm Julie:

oh yes. Hi ya Rev Rabbit!
  10:31pm Daya:

The Black Widow Martini sounds YUMMY!
Avatar 10:34pm WR:

But that would just be the start.
Avatar 10:35pm WR:

Lots of choices on that link Daya!
  10:38pm Daya:

Every one of them sounds delish, WR! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm chresti:

Hi long dark night of the home with Julie! Been listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Julie:

heya Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Don't remember this one - great little pastiche on an album I tend to mark as Queen's big sellout...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

& the 'good' early Genesis I remain ignorant of - so I become enriched...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Funny birds - my 1st guess...
  10:53pm Daya:

Piano played by Denis Haines
  10:55pm Dean:

I'm noticing that WFMU is lately paying a bit more attention to Genesis, all for the better.
  10:58pm Dean:

I have a ton of Genesis outtakes, bootlegs, etc., thanks to a buddy who is deeply connected to the library of, er, not legitimate recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm Julie:

Dean that's wonderful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

My impression of early Genesis so far has been of like a King Crimson before puberty - not as a knock as much as it sounds...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Kinks I don't know! Joy.
  11:05pm Dean:

I hear you, Rev, but my sense is the converse: Genesis is the matured KC.

On reflection, I have no idea what that means.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm Julie:

hmm I guess I need to check out some Crimson
Avatar 11:07pm northguineahills:

Julie! About to hit the store, will be listening in my automobile...
Avatar 11:07pm WR:

No you don't Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm Julie:

HAHA. Maybe stick to the video collabs with Toyah huh?
Avatar 11:09pm WR:

It is not to say that there are not some interesting King Crimson recordings but life is short.
  11:10pm Daya:

I loved the ‘Discipline’ era version of Crimson, saw them many times during those years.
“The Sheltering Sky” might fit nicely into your show, imo :)
Avatar 11:11pm WR:

And hey. I generally prefer dark beer so what do I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Haha Dean.
Well - the Crimson one has a sardonic aspect - & Genesis speak of forming in public school
...then there's Van der Graff Generator but I digress...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Guinness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm Julie:

I feel like I've played them a couple times but not in ages
  11:13pm Daya:

Van Der Graf... are we going to segue into Magma and Popul Vuh now? ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not sure about that but I can imagine some Venn Van Julie intersection...
  11:15pm Daya:

(Forgive my spelling, it’s late for me ;) )
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh who knows how to spell any if that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

*of :)
  11:16pm Dean:

My approach to Crimson is in terms of vague notions like "musicality" and "virtuosity." On balance, I think Genesis "wins" for the early work. Fripp seemed to dispense ideas, where Genesis delivered songs. Fripp did some masterful finger work, but then so did Tony Banks, without all the hoopla. I have tried hard for decades to appreciate VdGG... I really want to dig them, but I don't...so far. I suspect I will come around shortly.
Avatar 11:17pm WR:

I had stopped paying attention to them after hearing their 3rd album. Dipped into a couple id the later ones but will give Discipline a listen. Their 1st album ¹was a dorm favorite for my one semester of regular college.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Start with KC debut - great dynamics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19pm Julie:

I actually have a King Crimson concert ticket on my fridge that I had got for a friend (for cancelled concert in June I think?)
  11:20pm Daya:

IMO, ‘Discipline’ is the best of the lot during that time. It always has my 100% attention. ‘Beat’ also has some wonderful moments.
  11:20pm Dean:

I had all the early KC records before I sold them ~25 years ago. I know them more or less well.

The Belew period? No, can't stomach it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Julie:

every time you say KC I think sunshine band
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well yes, Prog's typical formal liabilities - & every genre has theirs - are virtuosic technique & big concepts over useful tuneage or relatable expression...I guess I regard KC & VdGG as gnarly enuff.
  11:23pm Daya:

It was fun watching the ‘out on a limb antics’ of Belew and Levin, contrasting with the technician aspects of Fripp and Bruford, that was a treat for me.
I did see Belew solo, and with The Bears not long after, always a bouncy guy on stage ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm Julie:

did Belew do stuff with Bowie? I feel like i heard his name a lot from my Bowie fan ex
  11:24pm CC:

High y'all!!!... this is kind of groovy!!!
  11:24pm Daya:

Exactly what I thought too, Julie! LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I mean - Syd's unit here be a total Prog foundation. Not entirely foreign territory.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm Julie:

hey there CC!
  11:26pm Daya:

I know Belew worked with the Talking Heads, and I think he did work on Bowie’s “The Lodger”, maybe?
  11:26pm Dean:

Oh, heck yes, he did, late '70s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes Belew with Bowie & Talking Heads too. That Guitarist who ... how does one characteristize...
  11:27pm CC:

Creativity has no boundaries!!!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

He brought a completely original approach to sounds & effects.
  11:28pm Dean:

I simply don't like Belew's work. Doesn't matter much whom he partnered with.
  11:29pm Daya:

Belew loved doing all sorts of stuff, neck bending, feedback techniques, animal noises, etc...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

en.m.wikipedia.org...
  11:30pm CC:

Well aren't you just an old Sourpuss Dean?!?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm Julie:

hey now it's okay not to like a musician.
  11:31pm CC:

Sorry Julie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm Julie:

though Crimson AND talking heads is pretty good range. No worries CC. :)
  11:31pm Daya:

Ah, yes, he did some stuff with Laurie Anderson too, but when I saw her on the “Strange Angels” tour, I don’t believe he was there, I just remember her being alone on stage
  11:32pm Dean:

Okay, I'll own it. I am a sourpuss. And I proud of it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Julie:

Old Sourpuss must hang out with the Old Codger
  11:32pm Dean:

I'm^
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It is. Though Zappa, Bowie & Byrne may be disappointed in your opinion of their judgement.
Avatar 11:32pm WR:

Julie, I trust you to stay the course undeterred by the prog tangent discussion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Belew is distinctive - & such is not always for everyone.
  11:34pm Daya:

Did he work with PiL, or am I mixing him up with Steve Vai?
  11:34pm CC:

My mind said might be a little deterred because I just listen to Jones and x-ray from October 16th 2005???
Avatar 11:35pm northguineahills:

Thanks for the ride w/ Ride, when I was in my ride (aas I went for a drive),
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm Julie:

nice!
  11:36pm Dean:

I myself have been responsible for derailing discussions of, inter alia, progressive rock debates on the comment boars. I really do not want to effect the same result just now. I'm fine with disagreement about Belew or Crimson or whomever. I only claim my unfettered right to be a sourpuss!
  11:37pm Dean:

Jesus: ^boards.
  11:37pm CC:

NGH... it's not advisable for you to go for a drive for no good reason these days... unless you take a pee bottle!!!...:)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

No if he did PiL I think we'd all be sure. Lydon probably liked the perversity of working with Vai & Ginger Baker... Belew probably too close to Heads & Bowie for Johnny...
  11:38pm Dean:

I saw PiL, first tour, Olympic Auditorium in LA. Openers included Los Lobos and the sublime Kipper Kids. Cred?
  11:39pm Daya:

It’s probably Steve I am thinking of, Rev. Thanks :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Dean it's typical with Prog. Besides you're informative. Apologies to Julie though. Playlists never fail of course.
Avatar 11:39pm northguineahills:

@CC: I just like to go look at the heat lightning, and which 'restaurants' (read: bars) are full of covidiots, and explore roads I've never gone explored...
Avatar 11:40pm northguineahills:

(restaurants full of cars in the parking lot, are not serving food) (I'm outside Jacksonville, so yes, it's what you think....)
  11:41pm Dean:

Ah, me. Once upon a time, it wasn't typical of prog. Thems was the days.
  11:41pm CC:

Well... if you got a chick on the back it's going to be harder to figure out a place to pee!!!...hehehe...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Julie:

I've done a lot of driving too. I can't take a walk here just too many idiots
  11:43pm Daya:

Yes, Julie, seems you did do lots o’ driving lately ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm Julie:

But yes the lack of a bathroom is quite noticeable
  11:44pm Daya:

I hear that! LOL
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm chresti:

Thanks Julie! Here I go into darkness..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm Julie:

thanks for listening, Chresti!
Avatar 11:48pm WR:

I've decided to proof my forms before work tomorrow, so I won't be here to the end. Laters all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Julie:

night WR! good luck with the tax stuff
  11:49pm CC:

The subject matter of this song makes no difference the notes are what's fine!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

WR I goofed ONE numeral on my return & waited & waited...don't be me. Night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Julie. Kind of muggy out, but it's cool and dark.
Avatar 11:55pm northguineahills:

Thanks for the bird and the sounds Julie!
Avatar 11:55pm northguineahills:

I remember that Dave Hill show!
  11:57pm listening out there:

This is pretty okay...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hullo creature! <3
...OK - gittar sounds on Bowie's 'Boys Keep Swinging' - that's Belew.
  12:00am CC:

I guess you're in competition with night owl???
Avatar 12:01am northguineahills:

+ there's a great mexican place nearby.
i almost stopped there yesterday, since it was (presumable, still) "meatless monday". i wish i had. i don't want them to disappear (though i don't think they will)
they have amazing tostadas and burritos and okay tacos.
...i just don't want to get out out of my rarely go out mode.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37am coelacanth∅:

CC see (@12.32) i like that and that's what i usually get at that place; but i generally don't keep or use any wheat or dairy products at home.

@coel: It's like a sandwich, especially if you use a wheat tortilla (and I otherwise prefer Oaxacan cuisine).
