Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Phillippe Bastille:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Can almost hear Freebird @ the end...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:12pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Julie and dark citizens. I remember RCB's "Don't Misunderstand Me" getting airplay back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Julie:

hiya Ken!
Avatar 12:17pm Roberto:

Yeah there's one Rossington Collins song that was played somewhat regularly on classic rock radio in the '90s. Maybe it's that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm Julie:

that whole album is really good I listened to it a lot. I believe the band produced it themselves.
Avatar 12:18pm Satyric:

Oh wow, I spent like a solid year listening to Dead Can Dance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ooof. Picture of Hope.
Loves Mazzy.
Avatar 12:20pm Satyric:

Julie, have you heard the Andy Prieboy/Nopalitano version of "Tomorrow, Wendy?" It's on my 'I'd like to get choked up' playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:23pm Julie:

No, I have not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not waiting for anyone to Write & Record anything better than Lennon on 'Rubber Soul'.
Avatar 12:26pm Roberto:

Oh jeez I didn't know about your sister. So sorry, Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Julie:

Avatar 12:38pm Hubig Pie:

If my vote counted, I vote this best Pretenders song.

hi Julie and everyone!
Avatar 12:50pm Daya:

Oh no! “Voices Carry”
Remind me to tell you my Aimee Mann/‘Til Tuesday story, you will NOT believe it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Julie:

hiya coela! Hi Spodi!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Julie:

Daya I really expected you to have a Dale Krantz story
Avatar 12:51pm Daya:

Well, yeah, I do, but... We need to talk in depth sometime ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm coelacanth∅:

i'm sorry to hear about your sister.
rest in peace Diane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Julie:

thank you Coela
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Andrew Waterloo:

Voices Carry reminds me of the time I was at a comedy show and a guy sitting near the stage started getting rough with his girlfriend. Thankfully half the people in their section worked security in other clubs, but the comedian still had to stop the show and confront the guy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Just dig Jackie DeShannon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Ike:

Hello. I echo the condolences. Hope you're hanging in there. Great photo. For just a split second until my brain figured it out, I thought that it was you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm spodiodi:

sorry to hear about your sister, Julie. i wish you peace
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm Julie:

thanks Spodi, thanks Ike.
Avatar 12:58pm Roberto:

This set sounds a lot like what my covers band was into.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Julie:

yep we have similar faces although as she got older she looked more like mom and I look more like dad
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So also the last of five. Father gone 15 years - Mother is 87.
Lost friends of course. Pretty sheltered from loss early in life - not true for everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Julie:

my dad is 87 too!
Avatar 1:01pm Daya:

Heh, my mom is 87 as well :)
Avatar 1:04pm Daya:

Yes, Linda recorded a few of Karla’s songs, I LOVE Karla! Always had her albums :)
Avatar 1:07pm Roberto:

Middle of the Road.
  1:10pm Mr Nobody:

Aww I was just wondering if you had ever been able to get ahold of some of her song recordings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Julie:

I won't give up! I just need to get ahold of her cassettes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Sending you lots of love, Julie.
  1:13pm Mr Nobody:

I'm sure they are out there somewhere.
Avatar 1:13pm Daya:

Live at Guliford HS? CT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:14pm Julie:

thanks S&M&S Yes Daya, Morris went to school there and she sang at a benefit there in 2016
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Julie:

She went to UConn in Storrs so that's where most of her local playing was.
Avatar 1:16pm Daya:

I have lots of friends in Guilford (I lived in Madison, the next town over) for 15 years, will ask them if they have any recordings.
Also: will check with friends up near Storrs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Julie:

thank you! It would've been between 1978-1982
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm brainiac:

Julie, your sister and I evidently had a lot of cross over in our record collections, including Karla Bonoff. She was my age.

But here's the kicker: I'm a graduate of a Guilford HS! (Not the one in CT, though.)

I'm very sorry for your loss, Julie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Julie:

wow brainiac. and thank you.
Avatar 1:21pm Really Lisa:

Julie, my heart goes out to you. It's a beautiful tribute.. I've been listening while working.
We chatted about this in May I think.
Cheers to big sisters <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm Julie:

thanks Really Lisa, good to see you.
Avatar 1:24pm βrian:

I miss my sister, though I never actually had one. That's what I miss.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm Julie:

just like in Julilana's song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:25pm listener james from westwood:

Sheila B. would call this "the occasional man."
Avatar 1:25pm Satyric:

It's a really great list.
Avatar 1:25pm Daya:

Perfect segue/transition into “Wish You Were Here” <3
  1:26pm Mr Nobody:

This song always hits deep. Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Julie:

hey I was playing the occasional man back in 2010. My playlist is usually more mixed these days then I really had to work to find male artists I liked.
Avatar 1:28pm βrian:

@Listener James: Good name for a cocktail.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:30pm listener james from westwood:

@Julie: True! More in the context of today's playlist, I should've added!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Roger Waters is much abused - but if I wrote that I'd then put on comfortable shoes & have an extended vacay...
Avatar 1:31pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

one of the things that makes this show worth listening is how it gets deeply personal at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:31pm Julie:

indeed!
Avatar 1:32pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Yes, Julie, don't give up, there must be more recordings from her!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Julie:

maybe a little too much, cha cha but sometimes I just gotta
Avatar 1:35pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Even if it is only a promo pic, that is still a beautiful picture on the top of this page.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36pm Julie:

she was very photogenic. My sister who was two years younger than Diane studied photography in HS and did a whole photo album of Diane pictures. I'm hoping that still exists as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Freddie makes more sense to me fully Melodramatic than when Queen...well I'll sit on my snark today how about that.
  1:39pm Mr Nobody:

BOOBIES!!

Blue-footed ones!
  1:41pm Mr Nobody:

Those too!

Avatar 1:44pm northguineahills:

It's Julie time!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm coelacanth∅:

... that's how it was back in the day -when i was little, before recorded music. we'd just buy sheet music and play the song, or throw it in the player piano when times were good
  1:46pm Mr Nobody:

Karaoke and drag bars. Sounds like some good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Julie:

heya NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Julie:

yes, Diane is to blame for my ONJ obsession
Avatar 1:51pm βrian:

Oh, I just love Annie's voice.
Avatar 1:51pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

aww, that's nice she gave you ONJ
Avatar 1:52pm βrian:

I suggested to Matt WW that he forsake Felder in favor of ONJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:54pm Julie:

I told this story before but she brought me into her room and played it for me and was like do you like it? You can have it it's too country for me.
Avatar 1:57pm Daya:

Annie! Saw her in a local club the same year, ‘77
She was SO tall!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm Julie:

Solo or with Renaissance?
Avatar 2:00pm northguineahills:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm Julie:

they really do. she's even godmother to his kids.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:05pm Julie:

Definitely Dork Night of the Soul!
  2:06pm Mr Nobody:

@Stanley I feel your pain. I feel like I was beginning to look like Cousin Itt but thankfully I was able to sneak out for a haircut about a month ago. Starting to get shaggy again but I'm not sure if I will be risking it right now. I am fine with being the guy with the long hair in the office.
  2:07pm Dean:

  2:09pm Dean:

Saw Annie with Renaissance, LA's Greek Theater. Opening act was Jean-Luc Ponty.

Oh, just seeing the awful news about your sister. I'm so sorry.
  2:09pm Funky16Corners:

Hey Julie!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Julie:

thank you, Dean. I saw Renaissance last year I think it was? Amazing.
Avatar 2:10pm Malcolm:

sorry to hear about your sis, Julie.
Avatar 2:10pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I feel guilty for having seen one of Kate Bush's London 2014 performances - so many did not get a ticket and I did. And yet i did not like it as much as I thought I would, as it was mostly based on A Sky of Honey (Aerial disc 2) and The Ninth Wave (Hounds of Love, side 2), neither of which are my favorites from her brilliant work. Also all the mighty visual were lost on me, I was at the very back of the balcony and my first ever specs arrived the same day the concert took place, only that I was some thousands of miles away.
Bah humbug.
Avatar 2:10pm βrian:

@Dean: That same tour, I'm sure, I saw them at Pine Knob near Detroit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Julie:

Gosh Larry you're so early I'm scared I lost track of time! Thank you Malcolm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I don't cut my hair cause it doesn't grow. Or vice versa. Don't remember anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10pm doctorjazz:

Avatar 2:12pm Malcolm:

i love eighties cohen, he was at his most jaded and hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm Julie:

Larry -- with heavy equipment?
  2:13pm Dean:

I've said it before on various comments boards, but I'll say it again: ONJ is Max Born's granddaughter. A history I read last year of the evolution of quantum theory used "Let's get physical" as an epigram to one chapter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Julie:

I enjoyed Kate's live show very much but yes I would've like to hear more early stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Democracy Coming to the USA?
Maybe not.
Avatar 2:13pm Malcolm:

lol nineties even! I was thinking of I'm your man, which has similar production values
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm Julie:

I LOVE I"m your man.
Avatar 2:14pm Malcolm:

so good!
  2:15pm Funky16Corners:

@Julie - If my ears can be classified as heavy equipment
Avatar 2:16pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

I'm no expert on Leonard Cohen, but I guess his writing was probably even better than before, but the music (meaning its production) became a bit more cheaper sounding if I may say so, at least when compared to something like Songs of Love & Hate for instance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Julie:

i was just quoting the B52's song...we're in the basement with heavy equipment!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This has been a nice celebration of your sister, Julie. My condolences.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm doctorjazz:

Love this Cohen too! (After he lost what little voice he had, and still manages to sound great).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16pm Julie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Julie:

LC died election day 2016. Lucky bastard.
Avatar 2:18pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

what! is it so long ago.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm spodiodi:

reminds me of my old buddy, who made a copy of this album for me in ~'97 (and died unexpectedly while in the hospital for some kind of minor-ish procedure)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The 1960s Cohen had that intimate Folk thing - Classic. But the later stuff had bazouki & some interesting touches - magnificent back singers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:20pm listener james from westwood:

All the passings in 2016 were just the shit icing on a crap cake.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm spodiodi:

i agree with listener james from westwood
Avatar 2:21pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Cohen died on monday 7th November. And to directly quote Vicky Pedia (har. har):"The 2016 United States presidential election was the 58th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016."

What Cohen saw @ the end :

Edward G. Robinson had the right idea in Soylent Green.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:26pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

That is a thing - losing people who one shares entire cultural references with.
Avatar 2:26pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Revolution Rabbit Nov63 @2:20 : Cohen always used good backing singers, contrasting nicely with his, if more charismatic , well, less 'professional' voice.
  2:28pm Funky16Corners:

I had to sing this song in a 5th grade ecology assembly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Stanley:

Nice to hear some Joni, this eveing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Julie:

I feel like his death was announced after the election though, at least that is my memory of it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm spodiodi:

i was thinking that was likely the case, Julie
Avatar 2:30pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Even if it is a pity Joni Mitchell has not made any new music for ages, I guess it is what she is comfortable with. She said sometimes during 00s(?) she has said what she has to say and she prefers painting (not using those exact words).
Avatar 2:31pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

Anita Lane is one of the best singers who can not actually sing. Love her.
  2:31pm Funky16Corners:

She’s been sick for quite a while

JULIE!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:31pm Stanley:

Her 'Blue' album still is, for me, as perfect piece of work you can get.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

There's a fiim following young Leonard before Pop music around as he gives readings of his Writing. Very interesting. He already had all that going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm Julie:

hi Wendy!! Blue is my fave as well, Stanley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Stanley:

Goldfrapp brings me happiness
Avatar 2:33pm Daya:

I was waiting/wondering about some Joni! :D
(Yes, Blue is my fav too)
Avatar 2:35pm northguineahills:

There was a time Goldfrapp was an IDM group, before they got poppy...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Goldfrapp - unquestionably Summer's favorite. Thank you, Julie. Love, always.
Avatar 2:37pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

@2:31 Funky16Corners: yes, that awful aneurysm. But she is still alive, like she did attend her 75th birthday party in 2018 - there is a picture of her with James Taylor from that occasion (in Mojo Magazine for instance)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Julie:

I think there was a pic of Elton and Joni from not very long ago

Love Dennis Wilson! M.I.U. Album does not have the best reputation, but I guess I should give this one a chance. Also Light Album as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Julie:

I don't know the album at all I just picked it for the Diane song which was so much more than I expected
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - putting Civilization on pause may have some beneficial effects in the end. As may making Civil Rights a national priority again. Courage My People.

Avatar 2:52pm Sylvia (France-NYC):

@northeguineahills 2016 was very shit though, bad years aren't mutually exclusive sadly
Avatar 2:52pm Photocopy Cha Cha 2000:

speaking of KInks and Connecticut, it brought the Finnish version of Jack The Idiot Dunce ("Jerry Cotton" by Kontra) to my mind:
"Mä oon Connecticutista,
mut ei se mun mainetta kutista"

translation:
"I am from Connecticut
but it does not shrink my reputation"

High Julie. Have been listening for a while. Deep condolences for the loss of your sister. Thank you for sharing her with us. You have mentioned several times before about your discovering music from her.
Avatar 2:54pm northguineahills:

@Sylvia: 2016 was the worse year of my life, and w/ all our favorite musicians dying. 2020 is definitely beccoming the above contender for all of the above.

Hey Julie (this is Kate, not Handy...he's off in a canoe on the East River!)...your tribute to Diane today has been so moving. Thank you for sharing all of this with us! It's been really special to listen to...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Handy Haversack:

I'm going to go back and listen to the show, Julie. It looks wonderful, and Kate was very moved. She had a little trouble figuring out the commenting but says she loved it so much.

I am also just giving the Hairlympics gold to Linda Ronstadt, and this decision will brook no argument. Hotsie motsie!
