Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm Julie:

Sylvia I've been hooked since Mosquito & Marilyn & John. Her baby years.

it wasn't serious, i don't think. just harrassment.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Julie:

Oh well, just the once
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm David (in London):

I think Ken's Fury comes from being so busy. He's stretched a bit thin these days.

Rod McKuen is so preposterous but so great at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Linda Lee:

yes! i have seen that one. can't recall where.

Dark Night of The Who.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Handy Haversack:

But _Ken Fury Does (and Does and Does): So Can You!_, his book on multitasking was a paradigm shifter, David
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Linda Lee:

amazing. a visionary who basically saw the functioning of the material world clearly & recommended a way through with integrity, but.. we all remember his shooting Joan drunk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:32pm Rich in Washington:

Rod McKuen's had quite the career. He even recorded a (fake) highbrow experimental electronic music album as Hans Hofmann-Richter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Linda Lee:

not good or bad. just funny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm David (in London):

Could you send me a copy Handy? My time management is poor, so I feel I might benefit from the wisdom of a master.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Revolution Rabbit Nov63: a friend of mine is working on a bio of Joan Vollmer (the one Bill shot). Fascinating revelations are emerging!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Oh Burroughs was / is an Aquarian Prophet - everybody knows this.
Mercy - to be a Whofan in 1975. Oh me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Rich in Washington:

That sounds fascinating, Granny! Joan was an interesting figure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Phillippe Bastille:

Hey coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:35pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Linda Lee: the more my friend digs into the history of this, the weirder it gets. Just to clarify: i ain't worshiping Old Bill here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Linda Lee:

brava darling. worship is bad for the psyche!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Rich in Washington: you may not be surprised to find that she was the kind of gal who wrote school papers for her boyfriends (uncredited, of course) and there's reason to believe she wrote things for other men out there in the world (uncredited)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Handy Haversack:

David, I'll send eight! Ken Fury is also my parcel carrier.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm Phillippe Bastille:

There's a fine line between worshipping and adoring
Avatar 12:37pm still b/p:

I lightly envy a world and circumstances in which Burroughs' adult allowance from parents, 200 bucks a month, reportedly "was enough to keep him going, and indeed it guaranteed his survival for the next twenty-five years, arriving with welcome regularity. The allowance was a ticket to freedom; it allowed him to live where he wanted to and to forgo employment."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:37pm David (in London):

Handy, damn, he's nothing if not versatile.
Avatar 12:37pm Daya:

Ahh Tori, I saw her on this tour in August of ‘98 :)

they've just come out with a book on Anita Pallenberg, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Phillipe: i wouldn't say i adore Old Bill, neither! ;-) My favorite work of Burroughs is his "Advice to Young People"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Rich in Washington:

yeah, I remember reading that she and Bill shared a love of literature and he looked to her as an intellectual kindred spirit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Linda Lee:

still b/p ~ even in the early 80s we could make in in new york city on a 3 day workweek, if unlucky..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Not the only Lady crucial to the Beats. Oh no Sir.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Linda Lee:

'make it' meaning you could make art, move around, have a life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Linda Lee:

that's right, Rev!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:40pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Linda Lee: from Joan Vollmer's murder to the Joan Anderson letter, women didn't have it good in the Beat scene. The reason i told the owner of the Beat Museum that his place was sexist is because he had a little nook in a corner called "Women of the Beat Generation."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:41pm Linda Lee:

i know.
honestly, patriarchy sometimes goes barefoot ..
  12:41pm elwyn:

Avatar 12:41pm still b/p:

I've wondered how regular (and irregular...?) working people can live in Manhattan in recent couple of decades. Certainly many can't and many forced out, but in that large residential population there's still gotta be some achieving it.

do you see / me with my sandals and / fortuitous bluejeans / the color of your eyes / my eyes / at sunset
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:48pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

i take Shel Silverstein more seriously as a poet than i do Rod McKuen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

David (in London): oh, i can't wait to hear your cover of "She's Lost Control"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Handy Haversack:

It's in a medley with "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?"
  12:51pm sim:

Yeah, I did my taxes in a last minute panic last night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm David (in London):

Granny, you don't want to be in the front row when we play that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Linda Lee:

yes, a really lovely photo of David. i dressed the same way! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:52pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

David (in London): noted. I'll send someone else up front, heh!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm Linda Lee:

off to work now, children of light. enjoy!
Avatar 12:54pm still b/p:

McKuen gets a pass for the song "Jean" -- because of its associations and for generically doing what it needs to do adequately on its own -- but not for much else I've read or heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:54pm Julie:

bye bye Linda good to see ya!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Who By Numbers' 1975 was the tail end of The Who.01 - as Keith Moon was still not entirely dissolute & they were still the mighty power they were Live - yet Pete is already into his midlife 'I hate Rawk' writing. Moon died in 1978 just after being propped up enuff to finish 'Who Are You' - & that was that. Then they had a long period when they essentially failed to replace the Fire element Moon provided - until Ringo's son Zak was brought in to Drum - but as Who crazy as I am I haven't much picked up on anything Pete writes anymore I'm afraid... I'm fine with them being their own Tribute band. They deserve it...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:58pm David (in London):

Hilary, I salute you for that fine track.
  12:59pm ?:

I'm a fan of the first stanza of McKuen's "School":

Before the Palmer method
taught me how
to write my name,
I'd learned to read _love_
in the salesman's face.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Julie:

Why DOES he get such a bad rap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:00pm Julie:

how is it already one? I feel like I JUST started.
  1:01pm ?=Dean:

Once again, I mess up the Name field.^
Avatar 1:01pm still b/p:

I was underwhelmed when Who By Numbers started getting airplay on its release. Some of it grew on me. But I think being underwhelmed by new material from prominent or even favorite artists was a standard mode back then for some reason. Expectations, judgement and the brain....go figure, huh?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm Handy Haversack:

So do I, Julie! I say we finally take a stand against linear time. If that revolution doesn't start in the Dark Night of the Soul, where's it gonna come from?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Julie:

haha Hi Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm Julie:

Larry is doing a Doors thing today after me that's gonna be a good one!
Avatar 1:03pm Hubig Pie:

Rod McKuen's bad rap-
My big sister listened to his records
and then there was that Luna song
  1:04pm ?=Dean:

G'morning! I have to listen off and on as I'm now "attending" a conference originally planned for NOLA.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:05pm CHUCK ROAST:

My mom's baby sister went to high school with the Lizard King.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Often have thot all of Punk was about doing what The Who *should* have been doing by then. They mattered that much.
Even in his contradictions Townshend represented that Rawk could be an energetic vehicle for Anything you wanted. Maybe even Growing Up? But Depression? There's nothing like being a Performer who doesn't want to be there.
'Hope I die before I become Pete Townshend.' - Kurt Cobain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Handy Haversack:

I can't tell if that album cover implies that that's god with the guitar ... or that maybe it's time to take god's Caddy to replace the band's currently sunken one?

Either way, I'm in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Julie:

I really like these guys.. they kinda scratch that itch that the Sundays left
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm David (in London):

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Julie:

@brian what's in the lockdown food?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

McKuen just fell between the Loungey old school in form & the turned on new school in content. I think maybe he didn't take himself as seriously as everyone presumed. He was perhaps PostMod in a Mod time...Or maybe a little just went a very long way in fact...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Julie:

He was just right though for a teenage girl finding his books.
Avatar 1:13pm βrian:

Today, it was shrimp braised in miso broth with baby squash, alongside quinoa and a blueberry-basil coulis.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wow this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm David (in London):

And Rod also did a lot to translate Brel's material and get it popularised around the Anglophone world. That wasn't nothing, by a long chalk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Julie:

which I guess brings us back to Bowie?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:16pm Julie:
