Hi everybody! Always wanted to have this cool VW Bully record player in the GIF, but I am too afraid that the probably cheap needle could damage my vinyl ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am alanr:

well, well, well, good morning again to you, too, from the heat, humidity, and tropical storm remnants in south Brooklyn.
Avatar 9:06am hyde:

you need a wacky sound effect for the new show alert announcements. like a bicycle horn/pennywhistle sort of thing
Avatar 9:07am TDK60:

Good morning Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome back, zivilars! Be careful, it's habit-forming. (Especially if you're a nun.)

Hi there Summer Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Webhamster Henry:

This little record bus used to be in the WFMU catalog I think.
Avatar 9:12am Really Lisa:

Hello Doug and everyone.
Hi Gina Bacon, hope you're well.
Avatar 9:12am holland oats:

drumma! peoples!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

@zivilars
Did you know WFMU gave away a "vinyl killer" record-playing yellow mini-bus as a marathon premium. Probably 15 years ago. It came with lots of WFMU stickers with which to decorate it.

Good morning, Webhamster Henry! Really Lisa! holland oats!
Avatar 9:15am zivilars:

@Doug and @Webhamster Henry: Didn't know that it was a premium, nice gadget for sure! As said, I wouldn't put it on my more precious copies in my vinyl collection because of the fear of a bad needle, but this thing surely is fun for "normal" records!

NJ to TN, Gina! Quite a change I bet!
Wanting out of NJ for a while. Maybe soon.
Avatar 9:36am TDK60:

Brian in Shropshire is it? Happy pre-birthday? Okay.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Gina Bacon:

NYC > NJ > NYC > Westchester > LA > TN! My head spins. I can understand wanting to leave, but now when I drive through I'm struck by how beautiful it is...in places!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Gina Bacon
All those old songs were inter-related.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Linda Lee:

talk about changing worlds. just come out of nyc 100 miles into the catskills! it's just phenomenal ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Webhamster Henry:

@Linda Lee Welcome to America's Original vacationland!
  9:41am bigplanetnoise:

TN is indeed really beautiful, but even tho it feels physically “samey“ to upstate NY, there’s still a fair amount of culture shock to deal with. Once you’re over that hump, it’s pretty amazing. Not to mention my taxes being about 1/4 of what they were in my upstate world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Linda Lee:

..& the reason it stays so wild here is the proximity, since we provide new york's water. the state & city have repressed development here for a century now, to keep the water clean. i'm blessed to be at home here for 35 years! :-)
Avatar 9:42am hyde:

dang, i need to get both of these Folkways records. i love the cover of the Stoneman Family one
  9:42am bigplanetnoise:

Linda Lee - I’m from Coxsackie - born n bred - how about you?
Avatar 9:42am dougseidel:

Perfect set for the apocalyptic sky that is gathering upstairs- thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Linda Lee:

i'm in southern Ulster, only since '85. a newbie! born in manhattan. :-)
Avatar 9:43am Really Lisa:

Yes, definitely some lovely scenery in parts of NJ. But the cost of living.. oof!
Haven't been to the Catskills since family car trips in the early 70s! It was the place to escape to in summertime, from NJ anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Doug Schulkind:

Come gather under the collective umbrella of love, dougseidel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Linda Lee:

it still is the place, i think, Really Lisa & now it's 'hip' for the moneyed. not a nowhere backwater any more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Doug Schulkind:

One of our Drummer Stream shows is relocating to the Catskills region. You will hear the beauty of the environs come through airwaves for certain.
  9:45am bigplanetnoise:

Nashville and surrounding areas are such cultural melting pots these days, it’s fairly easy to assimilate. That said, it’s still a different animal compared to the North.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Linda Lee:

what's unfortunate about this is, the non-moneyed are being priced out. so the rift that's always existed between the 'townies' & the vacationers is just deepening.. reflecting american society generally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Linda Lee:

good to hear it, Doug! the gifts are many here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Gina Bacon:

All true, bigplanetnoise! And nashville is a blue dot in a vast red world.
Avatar 9:48am TDK60:

Linda Lee. I'm not "moneyed". Can I come pitch my tent in your yard someday /after/ the plague? Hee. Would like to do some Catskills hiking.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Linda Lee:

never mind a tent. there's an extra room! i'd love it! the cabin's under contract now, though. i may not be long for the state. i'll let you know!
Avatar 9:50am Really Lisa:

LL, I bet! Being priced out is a prob even for rental communities in NJ. If I had steady work that allowed for remote working from home, I'd be outta here asap.
But yes, catskiils do look lovely.
Avatar 9:51am fred:

@Doug: And Rego will testify to the host's cat skills
  9:52am bigplanetnoise:

I guess relocating also boils down to preferred climate. It was important to me to never ever shovel (or even see) snow again. Sunshine and margaritas from here on, please.
Avatar 9:53am StringOFperils:

@bpn: As a northern Ontario boy by birth, I share that sentiment deeply.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am dutchtheo:

Dock Boggs was born in 1898, .N Dickens in 1888, Banjo Bill Cornett in 1890, Dan Tate in 1896, Nimrod Workman in 1895
  9:54am bigplanetnoise:

Good morning, String! Yeah - I bet you do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Linda Lee:

interesting thing: lots of our vacation homeowners from the city are working from here now, since March. making adjustments. most of them seem to have the kinds of jobs that allow it. getting in on the ground floor of full technocracy ~ therefore seeing no issue with it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Linda Lee:

the rest of us, well ..
Avatar 9:55am TDK60:

I got to see Nimrod Workman at a folk fest in West Virginia in 1976.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Linda Lee:

i'm with you, bigplanetnoise! 35 years of catskills winters are really, really sufficient. where are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am JtotheK:

i would like to take this opportunity to bid Doug and everyone a good morning.
  9:56am Listener Robert:

Probably because "nim" sounds like "dim", and "rod", well...that's obvious.
Avatar 9:56am dougseidel:

My son told me that Bug Bunny originated the pejorative usage in reference to Elmer F.
Avatar 9:57am βrian:

I don't know the Catskills, but I spent some time in the Adirondacks. Beautiful.
  9:57am Listener Robert:

It's probably a pejorative only in English.
Avatar 9:57am hyde:

@doug that's what i was just reading about: dotandline.net...
Avatar 9:57am hyde:

@dougseidel, that is.
Avatar 9:59am βrian:

Fresh peaches for breakfast, oh my!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Linda Lee:

Brian, i'd say the catsills are just a bit 'gentler' weatherwise & a bit more densely populated, in parts. the proximity to the city matters.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am chresti:

Morning Doug and drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Linda Lee:

hi chresti!
  10:01am bigplanetnoise:

Linda Lee - I’m in beautiful Leiper’s Fork, TN these days. Artistic paradise. Gorgeous. But mostly unmasked.
https://suburbanturmoil.com/leipers-fork-vacation/2020/07/06/
  10:01am Listener Robert:

I don't believe it originated in "A Wild Hare". Those cartoons latched onto a lot of slang that was trendy, so I suspect it wasn't sarcasm but an insult that'd been around in the late 1930s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am chresti:

Hi Linda!
  10:02am Ramblin' Ray:

Hello to Doug and all!

i lived in western NC in the 90s & spent time in eastern TN, so i'm not totally unfamiliar with the culture. been thinking about heading back. thanks for the link!

no, they haven't. some of the bungalow colonies have, though!

Gosh, around 10 years ago WFMU visited a rock fest held at an old Borscht Belt hotel in the Catskills. Can't recall the details now.

@Brian - most have been leveled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Linda Lee:

I recommend roasting your own. It's quite simple and pleasantly mindless.

@hyde
If he hasn't done one already, the great Gaylord Fields would produce a gorgeous comp such as that.

I guess this is a different Los Lobos? I just finished More Fun In The New World and the Los Lobos in that book were pretty young when they were playing punk venues in Los Angeles.

yes, different Los Lobos.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Linda Lee:

yes. always a good idea to look around first.
personally, i'm looking at places that aren't so car-centered generally & those places appear to be outside the US.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Linda Lee:

the reliance on cars here is pretty nauseating to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Irene Trudel:

I've been lurking and loving this morning's sets, Doug. I especially enjoyed the Brazilian music set you just played. Great stuff!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am chresti:

Good coffee is a fundamental requirement when choosing a destination to visit.@Linda@10:12

I'm sorry I missed Doc Boggs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Gina Bacon:

Happy Move-aversary!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Linda Lee:

i do believe where there's a will, there's a way ~ but i grew up with a guy with no legs who piloted an 4 seater airplane.
Avatar 10:34am Erella:

Congratulations Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Irene Trudel:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Linda Lee:

chresti, i felt that way about coffee for most of my adult life. then i had to quit. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, ken krimstein! Thanks so much, Erella!
Avatar 10:38am βrian:

"Coffee, I can't quit you!"

@Linda I hate car-centrism too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Jeff Golick:

Happy Pittsburghaversary, Doug and fam.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Linda Lee:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Never enough essays about Bud Powell, ken.

Thanks thanks thanks, Jeff Golick!
Avatar 10:42am βrian:

Where have all the Buds gone, anyway?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Doug Schulkind:

Mary Lou quoting "Body and Soul" just then. Superb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Linda Lee:

they're with the Kays, Brian! :-)
Avatar 10:44am ken krimstein:

so wonderful, this mary lou. also, do you like the late piano work of earl 'fatha' hines, his 'return?' really amazing, almost monk-ish at times...i think
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Earl Hines was a favorite of my father. Especially his Hot Five work with Louis. (My father's favorite favorite.)
Avatar 10:45am ken krimstein:

check out the stuff from him in the 60's -- he did some things at the new school etc. really terrific.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Doug Schulkind:

Mary Lou Williams grew up about 10 minutes from where I'm sitting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am doctorjazz:

Nice tickling the keys set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

@ken krimstein
Thanks for the tip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Linda Lee:

the new school in the 60s was hot.
they invted John Cage to teach a class there, in the early 60s. he agreed on the condition that the class be about fungi. so they let him teach about fungi! that was the start of the New York Mycological Society. they had a blast traveling the tri state area, partying & hunting mushrooms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Attila Zoller on guitar here. Really deeply beautiful player he.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am doctorjazz:

Got to see Hines late in his life, definitely way past his prime at that point, but still gladi got the opportunity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Linda Lee:

yes. this is great.
  10:51am Dean:

John Cage was a fun guy.
Avatar 10:52am βrian:

Or a fungi, nearly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Linda Lee:

he really was! :-D always with a twinkle in his eye, according to a great friend of mine, who was part of the group.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Linda Lee:

he did poison himself once. even the experts do that sometimes. recklessly.
  10:53am Funky16Corners:

Good morning!
  10:53am Dean:

I'm a pun guy, but I do recognize that Cage was genuinely fun. Just listening to him speak, I can hear the twinkle in his eye!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Jeff Golick:

Never heard of that Ran Blake record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Linda Lee:

i can too, Pun Guy. (& Pun Guy sounds like something from a Thai noodle shop.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Are you at the pre-marathon spaghetti breakfast, Funky16Corners?! You gotta load the carbs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome to Dean, quite literally the dean of listeners.
Avatar 10:56am βrian:

A friend and I once found some *beautiful* oyster mushrooms while hiking in the Adirondacks. We were pretty sure ... so we fried them up, and gobbled them down!
  10:56am Dean:

I'm also a pun gent, but we don't need to go there.

Yes, I am a literal dean, but a figurative Audrey.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Linda Lee:

& you lived to tell the tale, Brian! happilly!
  10:57am Funky16Corners:

@Doug - Spam and egg biscuits, at the request of my sons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Linda Lee:

call me pun gent too. especially in summer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Doug Schulkind:

Good thing you didn't come upon some blowfish in the Adirondacks, βrian.
Avatar 10:58am βrian:

Yeah, my friend didn't make it, but those are the breaks.

[I'm lying.]
Avatar 10:59am βrian:

I've read they can now farm non-toxic Fugu. Amaze your friends!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Linda Lee:

glad you're lying about that. there are much better ways to go..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Doug Schulkind:

Non-Toxic Fugu was the name of my first band in high school.
  11:01am Dean:

Mine was Hootie & the...no, it wasn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am Webhamster Henry:

@βrian - most of the old resorts are in ruins right now. Every once in a while some skeevy organization claims to want to restore them and turn them into casinos. The HV resort in Kerhonksen was recently fixed up, but a kid drowned in the pool a few years ago. I dunno. It might be open, or just have no webmaster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Linda Lee:

the casinos they've worked up aren't doing so well at the moment, either ..
Avatar 11:06am hyde:

i've eaten fugu, and if you take out the toxins you'd just end up with a bland white fish
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Uncle Michael:

Do you know why I pulled you over? I clocked you doing 45 in a 33 zone.
Avatar 11:07am βrian:

I couldn't wait for 78, officer.
  11:07am Funky16Corners:

I like this Matthew Shipp. I knew his name but wasn’t familiar with his work.
Avatar 11:09am βrian:

That Mary Lou Williams! Damn!
  11:09am Dean:

I know that song, βrian. It's on either Live at the Roxy or Live at the Vortex.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Linda Lee:

autographs! how nice!
i only have one, because a friend went to Trinity with Jim Carroll. i have the yearbook!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Linda Lee:

he signed a photo of the basketball team.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Jeff Golick:

Matthew Shipp has also retired from playing several times.
Avatar 11:14am TDK60:

Schipp like Neil Young in one way, maybe.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Linda Lee:

what a great stream, Doug. honestly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
Matthew Shipp contributed several guest columns on your wonderful destination:OUT blog, if I recall.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Linda Lee
Can't wait for you to hear the new show! Your Boy Black Helmet Radio with DJ Black Helmet. Here is the description for his show:

"Your Boy Black Helmet journeys through genres, sometimes words, different continents and at best time spaces, focusing mostly on jams that are righteous and ready for wave surfing. The crates are bountiful and we all should partake in the eternal harvest."
Avatar 11:21am Erella:

When I was in my early 20's, I was an announcer at a college station here in Toronto. Someone recently found this recording of me and John Cage and sent it to me. It is pretty sweet.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Jeff Golick:

@Doug: Looking back (to another life, it feels), Shipp wrote generously of his teacher, Dennis Sandole: destination-out.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Stanley:

Hi Doug and 'vryone.
The gif made me dizzy, so I've been listening at a safe distance (as with everything, nowadays). Great to hear another track about goats. As I've said before, goats are big deal in the world, no kidding (geddit?).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

@Jeff Golick
And here's another Matt Shipp guest column from 2013: destination-out.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
GOAT = Greatest Of All Time
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Stanley:

You said it, Doug.
And tasty, too. I think I've eaten, almost, every part of a goat, on my travels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Doug Schulkind:

Behold the majesty of the sentence, "I think I've eaten, almost, every part of a goat, on my travels."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Stanley:

This Isaac Rogana Ottah is terrific. Looked up says he's Nigerian but he sure is influenced by the sound of The Congo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Doug Schulkind:

@Stanley
A little soukous guitar flittering above, yes. Solidly West African percussion and bass line, to my ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Stanley:

And sounding a bit like Samba Mapangala
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Stanley:

Loved it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Jeff Golick:

Watched the Muscle Shoals documentary recently. It's good. But not as good as the music?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am JtotheK:

It's been ... a while ... since I've played soul 45s out (or any records for that matter). And I don't recall, but I think I have this Attractions 45 in a box waiting to be spun. But I could be mistaken. Fascinating story, I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Jeff Golick:

Tell 'em what you do with rooty poots, @UM.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am JtotheK:

@Doug :54, ha ha. See, telling more would involve me looking thru boxes that may or may not contain the 45.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm JtotheK:

And during 'safer at home' I actually did spend some time (days) organizing LPs. But organizing 45s ... I shudder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Stanley:

Thanks Doug, excellent show, as always.
Take care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm JtotheK:
