Good morning, Doug and all. In before the Maurice Abdul-Jabbar wisecracks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Longtime listeners of GTDS know I ADORE songs with humans imitating animals. I once did a whole marathon premium on that theme.
Avatar 9:13am holland oats:

I think this lady sat behind me in a movie theater once.
  9:14am bigplanetnoise:

Doug - is there any cake left?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

@Ken From Hyde Park
The name does make me wonder if the Abdul-Jabbar was West Indian roots.

Hi Doug
Goats are the real soundtrack to many places in the world.
At a guess (without looking up) Casimir Létang is from Haiti?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Doug Schulkind:

I don't speak Creole, but I'm guess "Pouce-Pouce" has a risqué angle to it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Webhamster Henry:

I like the little pipe organ in this!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

It's amazing to me how WFMU is getting the marathon swag mailed out given lockdown circumstances. Some heroic work being done in Jersey City.
Avatar 9:26am Brian in UK:

Hello Boss, think that Murray Saul's take on It's Friday is a bit old hat now.

Wait, Johnny Mandel wrote the “Touch of Evil” theme?!? All these years I thought Mancini composed it. See, this is why I tune in to Doug’s show. I learn things about my favorite music...and music that’s new to me, too. Thank you, Doug!
Avatar 10:32am Martinibomb:

I have always suspected that all of the "bongo suspense" we heard in tv shows from 60s/70s was because of this song.
Avatar 10:33am Sem:

Bongo Fury.
  10:33am JtotheK:

Hiya Doug, hi everyone! The Roy Ayers soundtrack to Coffy is a personal fave, as is the Dennis Coffey theme to Blackbelt Jones. (And I realize now there’s a pattern Coffy ... Dennis Coffey. Oh....my....!!!)
Avatar 10:33am bobdc:

I think "Bongo Suspense" should be a new regular show on the GTDS stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

@wendy del formaggio
Only the first two cuts in this set were from Johnny Mandel. The rest is just an homage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Doug Schulkind:

Hey hey, Jtothek! Greetings, bongosdc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Webhamster Henry:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Coming up in three more tracks, something from my all-time favorite movie score...
  10:35am wendy del formaggio:

Thanks for clarifying, Doug. Regardless of who wrote it, I love the “Touch of Evil” opening theme. I often use it as my music bed.
Avatar 10:36am Martinibomb:

@BobDc I am a huge fan of bongo suspense in tv/film -- a show dedicated to that is kind of a cool idea
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Doug Schulkind:

@wendy del formaggio
Touch of Evil was by some hack named Mancini.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Pedro in Arlington:

Wilson was actually a hardline Southerner - born in VA and raised in GA - but got a pass because he had been governor of NJ and President of Princeton. And then most of the world remembered him for WWI and the League of Nations effort that brought on his stroke. Quite a tragic guy. Too bad TR lost in 1912.

@Doug, yes, I know. THAT guy. One-hit wonder that he is. :-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

@Pedro in Arlington
Yes! Wilson's father was a cleric who gave religious cover to the KKK.
Avatar 10:39am Brian in UK:

So what happened to the fourteen points and yes, lets invent Iraq and screw it in time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

More bongos. Surprisingly few harmonicas in this set. Not such a good fit with the noir-ish bent in these cselections I suppose.
  10:40am JtotheK:

I like when Doug plays tunes by Bongo Santamaria.
Avatar 10:41am bobdc:

It's probably too late to put in a request for some Bronisław Kaper in this set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

Wilson's wife Edith ran the country for the last 18 months or so of his term.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

What is this stringed instrument here? A cymbalom? Also very prominent in film score music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Pedro in Arlington:

Of course TR had his own issues too. Even good guys like Harry Truman didn't start out that way and we have the letters as evidence. Jimmy Carter toyed with race in his second run for governor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am Webhamster Henry:

GTDS note: sometime, have an all Quincy Jones show. Don't wait until he dies!

Hot Casa, which reissued this charmer, just announced at the end of May the death of this fine fellow, Francis Mbarga. He was only 50. Here: www.facebook.com...

Re: Ipcress File--
"For this, the first part of the Harry Palmer movie trilogy, Barry borrowed the dynamic of Anton Karas’ twanging zither from The Third Man and transposed it to cimbalom." Film Score Monthly, Nov. 2002, pp.33-34

Oh wow, Dean!!! I was right! I called it a cymbalom. I still got it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Doug Schulkind:

Maybe 25 years ago I produced a WFMU marathon premium called Children of the Corn (which I later reissued on CD). It was all music by children. I didn't know about this Francis the Great tracks, but I wouldn't have included it anway. It would have taken up half the cassette!
  11:14am Dean:

Further confirmation: "The use of the theremin in early science fiction films, John Barry's inclusion of a Hungarian cymbalom in The Ipcress File (Sidney Furie, 1965), Anton Karas's zither in The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), Mychael Danna's use of Native American music in his score for The Ice Storm (Ang Lee, 1997), or more recently, Cliff Martinez's much-imitated Cristal Baschet in Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn, 2011) are just some examples of refreshing additions to film music's inventory." -- Christopher Letcher, "Composing Prototypical South Africans and Re-Sounding Buried Histories: Marked and Unmarked Instruments, and Musical Hierarchies in Proteus (2003)", Music, Sound and the Moving Image, Vol. 10, Iss. 1, (Spring 2016): 53-76,103.

Oh yeah! This Casa is hot.

Remind me to double your salary, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Webhamster Henry:

It's not being played like a cimbalom though. One note, no chords, no damping, no rolls... it doesn't even sound like the multi string courses a cimbalom has.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Doug Schulkind:

It sounds like the drummer on this track is also 7 years old (not a compliment).
Avatar 11:16am βrian:

As a kid, I understood that to be "celery." No wonder I was never motivated to work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Doug Schulkind:

Is it true that eating celery burns more energy than you get from eating the celery itself?
  11:20am Listener Gregory:

Celery is the best possible food for your health, except for the increased suicide risk.
Avatar 11:23am Brian in UK:

Braise your celery. No euphemism.
