Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am Listener Bob in PGH:

Good morning. Last night I heard this rather rude and extreme phrase/term and I thought to myself "that was the name of my first band in high school". For the life of me, I can't remember what it was now in the light of day!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Doug Schulkind:

How impossibly groovy is the music of Mauritius?! (A rhetorical question.)
Avatar 9:09am βrian:

Just made some break beats with a half dozen eggs and herbed goat cheese. Kamut toast avec, yo.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am melinda:

Morning everyone!
Avatar 9:12am Martinibomb:

@Bob my brother's rudely named high school band was "Dixie Wrecked" I remember he put up flyers in the hall and it took them awhile to realize what it said
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Doug Schulkind:

Wait a minute, βrian. You have a goat named Herb?

Hello Gina Bacon and melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Gina Bacon:

Hi Really Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Doug Schulkind:

My meters are telling me this track volume is a little high, but I can't bear to turn it down.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Listener Bob in PGH:

@MB - apparently I haven't ingested enough caffeine yet. I had to read and re-read that name multiple times and puzzle it out a bit before it finally came to me. Ha!
Avatar 9:17am TDK60:

Yeh Doug, that Indian Ocean music is groovy. Even tho you were just bein' rhetorical.
Avatar 9:17am WR:

Happy Birthday Really Lisa!
Avatar 9:18am Martinibomb:

@Bob Haha! That's how that one works ;-D took the school principal even longer - so you beat them by a few days.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am dutchtheo:

Olé, cheers Lisa!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am JtotheK:

@Doug, last week you spun The Attractions "Why Shouldn't A Man Cry" and you were riveted by my story and its cliffhanger ending of do I or do I not have that 45 in a box somewhere. Well, I looked - and I did in fact have it in a box, 'to be played out' "someday". The end!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Doug Schulkind:

I always love a happy ending, JtotheK!

Speaking of happy, welcome aboard Phillippe Bastille!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Listener Bob in PGH:

@βrian - you sound like a fellow roaster. I just got my unit back from the repair shop yesterday and roasted up a pound for the first time in several weeks. It's heaven compared to store bought equivalent.

Avatar 9:49am Really. Lisa.:

Ty BPN, your good wishes carried me through the week!
And thanks TDK60 :)
Avatar 9:49am βrian:

I do like to roast, but I keep it really low tech. Kind of a "chop wood, carry water" thing. It's quite, eh, stirring.

A Milwaukee heat gun, stainless steel bowl, oven mitt, and wooden spoon, and I'm good to go.

Nice lurking, Irene.
  9:55am Listener Gregory:

It is incredible how Paul Robeson is identifiable even in the next room not paying particular attention.
Avatar 9:56am TDK60:

Robeson, I'm humbled by a guy with such "guts".

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am listener Rey:

Hi Doug and fellow listeners. Mucho trabajo today so i'm listening and lurking. Really enjoyed the last set. Would love to hear that Johnny Hodges in it's entirety some time.

@Doug, vague memory that I have heard it. Will check my files.

I am hearing Little Willie John.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Jeff Golick:

The one bit of web tech that I wish *did* autostart is the FMU pop-up player. First it pops up, then I have to hit PLAY. The agony...then the ecstasy.

Oh, hi there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am doctorjazz:

The Gay Poppers, can you imagine a band calling themselves that today?
  10:20am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, requiring a button press prevents unintentional ecstasy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Don't try Googling their name for more info, doctorjazz. I tried and it wasn't pretty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Doo-

Group harmony singing (doo-wop) records has no dedicated preservation culture anymore, unlike all other elements of rock n roll and r&B culture. And how magnificent is The Wind!
  10:27am Listener Gregory:

@Jeff, it can be awkward in a work context.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Doug Schulkind:

Unintentional Ecstasy was the name of my first band in high school.

  10:48am Listener Gregory:

Step up to the Dais, Davis. Ooops, the Dais is gone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Doug Schulkind:

When my typos are generating commentary, I must have reached some kind of mountaintop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Jeff Golick:

Or a mountainhop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

Doesn't this Abdu Salim cut sound like it's from 1973? Such a faithful exploration of the "spiritual" post-Coltrane-devotional sound. But it's from 1994.
  10:51am Listener Gregory:

You have climbed the mountain and seen the promised land, Doug. But will you ever get there? (Maybe in November)
Avatar 10:52am Brian in UK:

Doug, you are in the Vamguard for typos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

I would like to climb the mountaintop and see Harold Land. Can you make it happen, Listener Gregory?
  10:54am Listener Gregory:

Well, I can make it so that you see one of his albums. More than that is beyond my resurrectional powers right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
Vamguard sounds like some kind of protective outerwear for tourists in Transylvania.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

The trombonist on this Abdu Salim treasure is Frank Lacy, the only name I recognize on the record (including that of Abdu Salim, who is new to me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Doug Schulkind:

The trombonist on this Frank Gratkowski number is pretty damn wonderful: Wolter Wierbos.
Avatar 11:05am TDK60:

I heard what you mean about the A. Salim. Love the spiritual-Trane-and-after stuff.
  11:06am Listener Gregory:

The trombone has fallen on hard times, I feel. Jeb Bishop is the only prominent contemporary player who comes to mind (although earlier generation people are still active). But is there any jazz "star" who plays the trombone?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Jeff Golick:

George Lewis?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Stanley:

I'm getting a rush off this, no mistake.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Hugo:

Interesting, that Abdu Salim piece. Out of Montauban in Occitanie in Southwest France. The only release on New Face records, Discogs tells me. Oh and hi, pop pickers!

@Jeff, I don't think he has name recognition outside of the free jazz circle. Also, he's 68. It's easy to name a half-dozen saxophone, trumpet, or keyboard players who are "stars" (must use quotes). Drummers too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Stanley:

No Doug, the other stuff you play does that. But I've always got ointment, at hand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Stanley:

@Hugo: Not 'arf!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Jeff Golick:

Jacob Garchick is doing cool stuff on trombone (tho might be better known as a composer). Samuel Blaser? Ok, I am reaching, and concede the point!
  11:11am Listener Gregory:

I am sorry to win this argument. But Jeb Bishop is great if people aren't familiar with him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Hugo:

@Stanley: I knew someone would say that!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Stanley:

@Hugo: though it's pretty obscure
Avatar 11:12am TDK60:

I was wondering the other day, why clarinet faded in jazz after the '30-'40s. It did, right?
  11:15am Listener Gregory:

@TDK60, I think it's often attributed to better recording, so that the not-as-piercing instruments could be heard. In the old days, you needed a clarinet to play high to be heard through the trombone and trumpet.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am chresti:

Jeff@10:19, right? I would stare at the player for a second before I realized I had to hit "play".
Avatar 11:17am TDK60:

Huh, interesting Gregory.
  11:17am bigplanetnoise:

I liked the Tony Scott records that he made in the later 60’s - especially the wackier ones, dueting with sitars, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am listener Rey:

@TDK360, I think it also had an old-timey dixieland rep among the younger musicians who were listening to bebop
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Hugo:

@Stanley: If I were to be fully authentic, if should be Greetings, pop pickers. But who's quibbling?
  11:18am Listener Gregory:

@bigplanet, I read last night that when McCoy Tyner left the Coltrane Quartet, he joined Tony Scott's group. I couldn't believe it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
Why am I not surprised by that?
  11:20am bigplanetnoise:

@Listener Gregory - at that point, Tony was pretty experimental, kind of an anything-goes player - at that time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Doug Schulkind:

Greetings, listener Rey!
Avatar 11:22am Brian in UK:

Hello Stanley and Hugo and those in higher latitudes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

I love the burbling, gurgling organ frittering around in the underbrush on this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am doctorjazz:

There was a Tribute to Roswell Rudd in Brooklyn a year and a half ago, no shortage of fine players in a Trombone group lead by Garchik (mentioned by Jeff above)...
artvoice.com...

(I alsodon't think there EVER were as many "star" trombonist as there are sax, trumpet, piano, etc. It's a notoriously difficult instrument to play).
My $0.02
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am chresti:

I think clarinet is on the upswing, Dave Sewelson has had a few clarinet players on his Music for a Free World show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

Dave's guest on Music For a Free World tomorrow (2-5pm, ET) will be percussionist Michael Wimberley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Doug Schulkind:

@bigplanetnoise
You're gonna love this next one...
  11:28am Listener Gregory:

@doctorj, you're probably right about the relative prevalence of trombone stars, but I can name a few in the swing and bebop eras, as well as post-Coltrane, but not so many now.
Avatar 11:28am TDK60:

Thanks listener Rey, for that angle. I was guessing it was because sax took over as it was more expressive and easier to bend notes; not sure.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Doug Schulkind:

I know how much bigplanetnoise loves Kofi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29am Uncle Michael:

  11:30am Listener Gregory:

@TDK60, that is definitely true as well. The sax is easier to play in tune too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Sounds like a country tune.
  11:32am bigplanetnoise:

Hahahaha! I sure do!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Jeff Golick:
