Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Webhamster Henry:

This is fun - like walking in the African halls at the Museum of Natural History. Got any slit drums?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am Doug Schulkind:

I've got slit drums up the wazoo, Webham!
  9:26am BillD:

I am looking forward to volunteering more at FMU when it is safe to do so. 30 years at The MTA flew by!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Doug Schulkind:

No that's actually the name of the next LP I'm playing, "Slit Drums Up the Wazoo." No it's not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27am Linda Lee:

Hi Doug! so happy for GTDS on this beautiful summer morning.
  9:27am Listener Gregory:

One year a little boy received a drum for Christmas. The next day, a neighbor gave the boy a gift of a pocket knife. As he was leaving, the neighbor asked the boy, "Did you ever wonder what's inside that drum?" (Slit drum humor)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

@BillD
Where you an EMT or an EMT dispatcher back in the day? When you were volunteering at FMU back in the early '90s, that's what I remember. But my memory is for shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am dutchtheo:

Mmm Kora! Its overhere now even to hot for the hammock, I identified Sonny Sharrock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Doug Schulkind:

So happy to sit under this shady baobob tree with you, Linda Lee!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Linda Lee:

thanks Doug! you betcha! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Maggie B.:

@ Doug - Bill was a driver for the MTA. He is retiring as a dispatcher.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Linda Lee:

i first found a thrift shop Kora lp in the very early 80s .. Kora Concertantes, iirc. my heart flew away & now it flies again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Linda Lee:

cannot remember the artists & that is shameful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Linda Lee:

such good, gentle medicine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am chresti:

Morning Doug and some drummers!, lovely sounds here!
  9:34am bigplanetnoise:

Morning, Drummers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Irene Trudel:

I love Kora playing! Such a beautiful sound. Anyone in NYC remember the Kora player who used to perform in the 59th Street A/C/D/B station? I would stay and watch him past when my train came. Can't think of his name but he passed a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am Linda Lee:

hi chresti! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35am redkayak:

Good morning all :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am chresti:

Hi Linda!
Avatar 9:36am Brian in UK:

Sona Jobartah is the only woman I have seen play the Kora, very good live.

Kora, Kora, Kora.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Doug Schulkind:

Good welcome, chrest! Hello, dear bigplanetnoise! (The java is over there in the big stoneware jug.) Greetings, redkayak!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am redkayak:

@doug - Ahoy captain!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I believe there are some women in the Diabaté family (long lineage of griots) who have been accepted as kora players. All too few, however.
Avatar 9:39am Brian in UK:

Sad to hear of Mory Kante's passing recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Deborah:

Good Morning! Loving this WFMU Stream.
Avatar 9:44am hyde:

i hated that movie

Avatar 9:46am Martinibomb:

I love going from your show into Uncle Michael show - pretty great line up
Avatar 9:48am hyde:

Delighted you're here, Deborah. Welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am melinda:

Guten morning everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Doug Schulkind:

@Martinibomb
The Drummer Stream lineup is like the '27 Yankees. Except with less chewing tobacco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Doug Schulkind:

melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am chresti:

Oh that movie, never saw it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Doug Schulkind:

I highly recommend continuing to not see it, chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am Linda Lee:

hi melinda! :-)
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

I'm not seeing it right now — whatever it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Irene Trudel:

Robbie Basho is such a masterful guitarist, and a has a beautiful voice too. Guess I need this album for my collection as well.
Avatar 9:57am βrian:

My music app says this is Explorers Room. I know better.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am chresti:

I remember the ads in the LA Weekly, and thought it was a Mondo kane kind of thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Irene Trudel:

Wow, while just looking for more info on Basho on the interwebs I just found there's a documentary about him. Guess I'm going to have to look into that as well. www.folkradio.co.uk...
Avatar 9:59am StringOFperils:

Good morning. Made it, at last!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Doug Schulkind:

Your app needs some coffee, βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Doug Schulkind:

Pull up a cushion, StringOFperils!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am redkayak:

@Doug - You're going above & beyond today sir
Avatar 10:01am Sem:

Good morning, Doug, and hello, drummer somes, and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Doug Schulkind:

Robbie Basho (Daniel R. Robinson), a fine son of Baltimore.

Speaking of fine sons... Sem!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Irene Trudel:

Jack Rose, another amazing (and now departed) guitarist! When the Knitting Factory was on Leonard Street, I remember a mesmerizing performance by Rose in which he dove into his guitar for about 40 minutes before pausing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Doug Schulkind:

Basho's death at the hideously young age of 45 was so hideously random.

"Basho died unexpectedly at the age of 45 due to an accident during a visit to his chiropractor, where an 'intentional whiplash' experiment caused blood vessels in his neck to rupture, leading to a fatal stroke. "
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

I'm pretty sure it was on your Tuesday show that I discovered Jack, @Irene. Lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Doug Schulkind:

Another brutal loss. Jack Rose, at (gulp) 38.
Avatar 10:07am hyde:

my smoke alarms have decided that this morning it would be fun if every 45 minutes or so they would go off for thirty seconds. please kill me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Linda Lee:

remember the song 'live for today'? every young loss is a reminder, for me. could be any day, for anyone.
Avatar 10:09am StringOFperils:

@Irene: Thank you for the folkradio link re. Robbie Basho. I will definitely watch that, later. Such an enigmatic figure. That voice.
Avatar 10:11am StringOFperils:

@hyde: Put them under the cat.
Avatar 10:12am hyde:

@StringOfPerils i wish i had a cat to put them under.
Avatar 10:12am βrian:

I once dropped a screaming smoke alarm into a bucket of water, where it stayed for a good 6 months.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Artie:

Lovely set. I was fortunate enough to be in the Blacksburg VA area during a fertile period for some of these musicians. Some of the Black Twig Pickers were experimenting with drones in Pelt while simultaneously soaking in Appalachian musical culture. And Jack Rose was pulling shots at the local coffee bar. I just adore this music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Linda Lee:

not under the cat. on the table next to the cat. over they go! then they break.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Doug Schulkind:

Black Twig Pickers collaborated so wonderfully with so many! I love Charlie Parr's work with them. (I ended up cutting a track by them from this set because I wanted all instrumentals.)
Avatar 10:14am StringOFperils:

On a more sympathetic SPCA tip,...new batteries. (I love cats.)
Avatar 10:14am Brian in UK:

Judging by the comments it has been a long week for some folks!!

Anyone seen/heard from listener 'fred' from France recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Linda Lee:

.. or just drop em in a bucket of water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am chresti:

hyde, we cover it with a bag and tape, it would go off every time Franco warmed up a tortilla.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Doug Schulkind:

@Brian in UK
I just exchanged emails with Listener Fred yesterday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am chresti:

I was wondering about fred, too @Brian in UK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Irene Trudel:

Such a great guitar set, @Doug! I'm going to have to delay my workday to keep listening .
Avatar 10:18am βrian:

FWIW, the Code in our area specifies a minimum distance from any cooking devices, so that usually means no smoke alarms in the kitchen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Uncle Michael:

Loving the guitar set.
Avatar 10:18am StringOFperils:

I have this strange synaesthesia thing with this so-called Amercian-primitive guitar stuff. whenever I hear it, I have an image of a creosote trestle-bridge over a river somewhere. It must be associative memory or something...strangest thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Artie:

Oh, yes. Charlie is true champ all the way around. That version of "Ain't No Grave" with the Pickers raises the hairs on me every time. For more drones from this group, check out Mikel Dimmick's Spiral Joy Band.
  10:19am Listener Gregory:

Doug, the very words "intentional whiplash experiment" indicate malpractice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am Doug Schulkind:

@Uncle Michael
You'd better keep listening. In my final set, I'm going to play a version of "In the Pines" you've never heard before. (Yes, in my "soul" set.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am doctorjazz:

Such pretty music...12 strings rule!
Avatar 10:20am Sem:

Glad you raised that, BiUK. I, too, have wondered where @fred was.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am doctorjazz:

(Never "got" Fahey, but generally really like his disciples).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Doug Schulkind:

Strange Synaesthesia Thing was the name of my first band in high school.

Creosote Trestle-Brigde was the name of my second band in high school.
Avatar 10:21am βrian:

Boulot, métro, dodo?
  10:21am BillD:

This is cool. I have Volume 6
  10:24am Listener Gregory:

The word "soli" seems like an oxymoron.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am chresti:

Thank you for the strings sets, Doug. I could listen all day and night.
  10:25am Listener Gregory:

Calling @dutchtheo. I would pronounce Joost as something like "Yost." What is your ruling?
Avatar 10:25am StringOFperils:

There! I've begun compiling a list of the many names of Doug's first band in high school.
  10:26am Dean:

Yes.

Yes was the name of my first band in high school.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am chresti:

Volume 6 looks good @BillD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am Artie:

@UM - A little overcooked wasn't it? Ah, the folly of youth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am dutchtheo:

The oo in Joost sounds like the o in rose the J like Y in yes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Webhamster Henry:

yes! Just avoid Dutch words with ""G" in them unless you have proper training.
Avatar 10:30am hyde:

now i have ptsd and i'm convinced my smoke alarms will go off any minute

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Hopey Sockmonkey:

Have really been enjoying the Friday dance parties. Glad they are continuing through the summer!
  10:31am Dean:

My First Band in Kindergarten was the name of my first band in high school, but we went by MFBK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Doug Schulkind:

I'm so glad, Hopey Sockmonkey. I feel we really need a place to gather and cathartically dance away the crazy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Thanks, dutchtheo! I meant to say "yowst." I even made myself a note.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

@Dean
You're blowing my cover.
  10:36am Listener Gregory:

To get that double-o right, just remember Roosevelt.
  10:36am Dean:

Only meant to answer your query about Beyond Berkeley Guitar.
Avatar 10:37am Brian in UK:

Thanks Doug, just in the middle of some bonfire action.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Doug Schulkind:

Some people love Samira Tewfiq the best. Other pledge allegiance to Fairuz.

I love them both dearly, but I am a a Tewfiq guy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Linda Lee:

gorgeous voice. beautiful music. really lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

The wonderful artist Joost Swarte has done a number of WFMU shirts/LCD covers and such.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Stanley:

Loving this set.
Oh yes and hello Doug
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Doug Schulkind:

We'll hear the great Fairuz in a short while. You can decide for yourselves. Samira Tewfiq has that husky, smoky voice. Fairuz's pipes are more ornamental and sinewy.
Avatar 10:41am βrian:

That's a tasty lead za'atar.
Avatar 10:42am hyde:

@Doug i love his comics work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Welcome, Comrade Stanley!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am dutchtheo:

Yes, i love Joost Swarte drawings too, and Samira Tewfiq
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Doug Schulkind:

Here is a great Joost Swarte piece. It was originally the cover of an L.C.D. (WFMU's old program guide). Later it was a shirt: i.pinimg.com...
Avatar 10:45am StringOFperils:

Hah! Great image.
  10:46am Listener Gregory:

Taroub was extraordinarily animated. It's impressive that I felt that she was really acting out the lyrics even though I had no idea what she was saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

You could swap in a French ya-ya chanteuse on this track. (But please don't.)
Avatar 10:47am βrian:

"Yé-Yé" would be a great first-band name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Righto. I meant yé-yé, not ya-ya. What a yoyo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am Doug Schulkind:

The baby grand piano flourishes on this Majida track are impressively understated.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am dutchtheo:

Swarte made drawings like that for the dutch music magazine 'Oor' (Ear), is this from 1982?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Doug Schulkind:

@dutchtheo
I think that Swarte art is from around 1989-90.
Avatar 10:53am StringOFperils:

I know his work from its inclusion in Art Spiegelman's RAW magazine, circa 82/84
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Doug Schulkind:

And now, for most, the undisputed queen, her majesty Fairuz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Doug Schulkind:

Her 150 million records sold is second only to Oum Kalthoum.
Avatar 10:55am alanr:

Another wonderful selection of music to soothe and awaken the soul, whatever the soul really is! (9 days before Mexico City becomes Brooklyn under my feet)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Doug Schulkind:

Speaking of under your feet, alanr. Has the earth stopped shaking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Stanley:

Hard to believe this gorgeous recording was made from a live performance. That live performance was in the sculpture garden at the Museum of Modern Art, in NYC, 1966.

Smother mine with hummus, Martinibomb!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06am Linda Lee:

i'll say it again. not enough jazz in the FMU universe .. compared to say, pale men on electric guitar. some have taken issue wiith this statement, but i stand by it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Doug Schulkind:

@David Dichelle
You are the very picture of passionate serenity. The poster child if you will!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Doug Schulkind:

@Linda Lee
I would have presented today's show a lot sooner, but I was awaiting FDA approval.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09am Linda Lee:

hahah!! i'm surprised you got it!
or did you?
  11:09am βrian:

Since Doug is playing "The Jazz Song," I've turned on the speakers so the entire office can hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Doug Schulkind:

@Linda Lee
Dr. Fauci whispered "screw the motherfuckers" and gave me the nod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Linda Lee:

sounds just like him!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Irene Trudel:

Well, despite clicky-starring just about every tune you've played today, @Doug, I must leave to do some actual work. Carry on with this great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Webhamster Henry:

So glad @Irene has work!
  11:13am Listener Gregory:

This (Pals) is timely. The "public relations men" are working overtime now to put out reassuring statements and taking vacuous action to show that they are Concerned. They Truly Care.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Doug Schulkind:

I clicky-star your keeping gainfully employed, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Linda Lee:

just remember, friends: it's *all* about PR.
  11:14am GUMBY:

Thanks for the Lazy Afternoon. The best song to do yoga to ever!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Irene Trudel:

Thanks @Webhamster Henry & @Doug. There still are Soundcheck podcasts for me to work on and so far NYPR hasn't laid anyone off. Fingers crossed that it continues.
Avatar 11:15am βrian:

Now the office is turning lazy ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Doug Schulkind:

@GUMBY
Yes, I can imagine! I do my yoga on Sunday mornings, which means I do it to the free jazz on D:O Radio here on the Drummer Stream. (Works better than one might think.)
Avatar 11:17am hyde:

the La Roca is killer
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Linda Lee:

D : O radio? please advise!
Avatar 11:18am βrian:

Destination Out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Doug Schulkind:

"Lazy Afternoon," originally from the 1954 Broadway musical The Golden Apple. Which I never heard of.
Avatar 11:20am Sem:

Sunday morning, 9 AM Eastern, LL. Join us for yoga and coolness.
wfmu.org...
Avatar 11:20am hyde:

The Golden Apple is apparently a Broadway musical version of the Iliad and The Odyssey. Which is probably why you've never heard of it, because that sounds like a terrible idea
Avatar 11:20am βrian:

Ok, now my office mates are laying on the floor ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Linda Lee:

beautiful! thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Doug Schulkind:

@Linda Lee
D:O Radio is hosted by Jeff Golick, here on the stream on Sundays, 9am-noon (ET). D:O stands for destination:OUT, which was a fabulous music blog that Jeff was co-proprietor of with another Jeff (the novelist Jeff Jackson). The two Jeffs started D:O Radio on the stream in 2011!

Playlists are here: wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Linda Lee:

thanks Doug! lovely!
  11:22am Listener Gregory:

D:O radio cannot be too highly recommended. (I mean that in the good way.)
  11:23am Listener Gregory:

Doug, who's lyricizing in the Reggie Workman cut?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Doug Schulkind:

@Linda Lee (and everyone)
After D:O Radio on Sundays is the Stork Club here on the Drummer Stream. Hosted by Stork (or Wolfgang) live from Münster, Germany. More great jazz and other sounds from Noon to 3pm (ET).

There's a lotta great shit going down on Give the Drummer Radio. (And I just decided, that is our new catch phrase.)
  11:24am Dean:

Lotta Great Shit WTNOMFBIHS
Avatar 11:25am StringOFperils:

The infamously litigious Lotta Greatshit will shut that down.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

No, Dean, it was the working name of an informal jam session I led in pre-k.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Doug Schulkind:

@Listener Gregory
That was the divine Jeanne Lee.
  11:26am Dean:

I thought that was Grateful Cheese?
Avatar 11:26am βrian:

Not the bone marrow jam?
  11:28am Mr C:

Sonny is on fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Doug Schulkind:

@βrian
Yesterday's bone marrow jelly toasts is today's avocado crustini.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am Uncle Michael:

Don't forget, at the top of the hour, it's the Hinky Dinky Time three-hour tribute to your first band in high school.

  11:29am Dean:

Did Sonny Rollins and Sun Ra ever work together? Seems like a match made in...heaven!
Avatar 11:30am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Doug Schulkind:

Sonny and Sonny! (Don't think so, but what do I know?)
  11:31am Mr C:

Whew, I'm exhausted. What a performance..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Jeff Golick:

What is up. Besides the Sonny.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Doug Schulkind:

Hey, everyone, there's the Jeff Golick we were talking about!
Avatar 11:36am βrian:

It's rumored that Jeff's first band was Hardneck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Jeff Golick:

Happy birthday to Reggie Workman!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Doug Schulkind:

Second weird equipment glitch causing a drop-out. My apologies to Mr. Brimmer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am Jeff Golick:

For accuracy's sake, @βrian, it should've been Redneck.
  11:43am Listener Gregory:

I have to leave to take a walk in the woods. If my body is never recovered, I will be happy that this is the last show I ever heard. Thanks for the lotta great shit, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Doug Schulkind:

Sheesh, Listener Gregory. Maybe leave a rice trail or somethin'?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Doug Schulkind:

In case you were wondering, Uncle Michael's Hinky Dinky Time is indeed next. Right here on your 24-hour Drummer Stream.

Is it any wonder?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Doug Schulkind:

Are you listening for In the Pines, Michael? Coming up...
Avatar 11:53am Sem:

Speaking of great shit on the stream, caught all 2:24 of "Lotte Und Leherb - Irre Gut" this morning, pre-Megan.

Naturally, had to look it up. When I read "...of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism (close to surrealism)", I slow- clapped its inclusion on the GTD stream.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Doug Schulkind:

@Sem
I will put an extra ingot in the unpaid intern's tin cup.
  11:55am Dean:

Are there bands named for all the boroughs?
Avatar 11:55am βrian:

Ingot is a weird word.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Uncle Michael:

  11:56am Dean:

Why, βrian? It's just got in turned around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Webhamster Henry:
