A Juneteenth of mixed feelings. Hoping and doing what little bits I can for a better now and future.

Ok, after that bit of rah rah, gotta go make rent money.

Morning, drummerstreamers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Stanley:

Jah Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Pedro in Arlington:

Wow, never heard that version by Ken Parker. Must have sounded incredible in 1968 considering all that had happened since Sam and Sam's death and all the deaths.
  9:16am Listener Gregory:

Good morning, Some-ers. Welcome to summer! (tomorrow)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Listener Bob in PGH:

Hello one and all. Happy Friday Juneteenth 2020!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Doug Schulkind:

I included that version of "A Change Is Gonna Come" on the first show I aired after the election of my president, Barack Obama: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Doug Schulkind:

Goodest day to you, Gina Bacon! Stanley! Pedro in Arlington! Listener Gregory! Listener Bob, just down the lane in PGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Uncle Michael:

I'm so SMART! I decided to update Windows 10 on three studio computers on show day. Whee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am listener Rey:

Morning dummasummas. Good vibes to us all today. This is an excellent way to begin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Pedro in Arlington:

Barack Obama represents what's best about America. Joe might squeeze out a few more votes by suggesting Barry would get a seat on the high court. A change is gonna come dammit.
Avatar 9:22am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

Glad to ride the vibes with you, listener Rey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am pantz:

@Uncle Michael Might as well go whole hog and update Adobe while you're at it. You're gonna be staring at the screen for an hour.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Doug Schulkind:

There are definitely going to be some awkward Thanksgivings in my family. I have a few uncles I may never talk to again. F**k those racist a$$holes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Uncle Michael:

@pantz: It's fun watching the race. Beefheart is at 5%. Nilsson is at 2%...but Nilsson has more RAM. This is exciting. The Maude already finished!
Avatar 9:29am Brian in UK:

I was amazed to see at the first Premier League match after lockdown; there was one minutes silence for Covid fatalities. THEN, all players and referees took the knee.
Avatar 9:30am duke:

@UM you have testículos de acero. You're a braver man than I am.
Avatar 9:30am Brian in UK:

Uncle, is it SEVEN hours today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am doctorjazz:

This track by Zephenia is amazing!
  9:31am Listener Gregory:

This song is... vocabulary fails me.

This puts me in mind of "It Dread Inna Inglan (for George Lindo)" by Linton Kwesi Johnson
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Doug Schulkind:

Never enough LKJ!

Noon to 7 PM (EST), for UM today- he'll have earned his ribs!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

Delighted to see you, StringOFperils.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Doug Schulkind:

@doctorjazz
The only glitch in this piece is the racist police who beat this young man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Stanley:

I think I get it
Avatar 9:51am WR:

Pre digital doctorjazz, composed in 66, LP release in 67. Tape looping.
  9:52am Listener Gregory:

Reich was not oblivious. He must have felt that using this particular tape was making a point... perhaps exposing listeners to a statement they would otherwise not know about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Doug Schulkind:

Reich was asked to create a work that would be used to raise funds for the Harlem Six. He was given hundreds of hours of audio tape by people associated with the defense of the young men falsely arrested for murder.
Avatar 9:55am StringOFperils:

I love how this just sounds like sinus rhythms after a while, the sound of the living bloodstream, the pumping heart.
Avatar 9:56am WR:

In about 71 / 72 listened to Come Out and It's Gonna Rain by Reich many many times. Sadly I had forgotten the context of the source for Come Out until you presenting it today. Need to remember.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Doug Schulkind:

"It's Gonna Rain" is a work of great beauty.
Avatar 9:59am thedunkel:

Avatar 10:07am marcury:

Good Morning and Joyous Juneteenth!
  10:08am bigplanetnoise:

Hey String! Do you have my address?
  10:08am Listener Gregory:

The Thermos was the first piece of artificial intelligence: It kept the hot stuff hot and the cold stuff cold. The question is, how did it know which to do??
  10:09am Listener Gregory:

That is not my original joke, he said defensively.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am Artie:

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
Every day an opportunity to take one more step on the path of righteousness.
Walk with us, Drummers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Doug Schulkind:

Call Cobbs on harpsichord here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Doug Schulkind:

Did I read correctly that Albert Ayler's New Grass is receiving a proper reissuance on the Third Man label?!?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Doug Schulkind:

Oops, that previous Ayler track was Zion Hill, not Zio Hill. I blame and mercilessly castigate my unpaid intern for all typos!
  10:38am Listener Gregory:

Doug, in honor of the holiday, I beg you to free the intern! Or at least give a free lunch.
Avatar 10:39am StringOFperils:

Yes! Don Pullen. Don't seem to hear from him too often on the streams, but that's probably has more to do with when I'm around. Phenomenal pianist. One of the times I saw him....I'm pretty sure I saw some blood on the keyboard at the end.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Doug Schulkind:

Silly Listener Gregory, you know there's no such thing as a free lunch.
  10:41am Dean:

Nor a free intern.
Avatar 10:41am StringOFperils:

Nor a free kitten.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Doug Schulkind:

Here's a little piece I wrote about 20 years ago called What I See When I Hear Don Pullen: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am doctorjazz:

Big Doin Pullen fan, one of those players you can pick out in just a few notes (saw him multiple times when he had the band with George Adams, and in a trio, great shows!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Doug Schulkind:

Cool thing. After I wrote that piece, I got a sweet email from Don Pullen's daughter. She confirmed that it is indeed her on the album cover I wondered about.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Doug Schulkind:

Free to be you and me, Dean!
Avatar 10:48am StringOFperils:

Yup. Sounds about right Doug. That account stirred a feeling-memory...an undercurrent of sadness for the Steinway or Bosendorfer that I saw being (probably) seriously abused/damaged. ( That was around the George Adams-Don Pullen band era.) I wonder if his daughter plays.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am doctorjazz:

Great article, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Doug Schulkind:

Just realizing that I wrote that piece as a relative new (a few months, maybe?) father of a baby daughter.
  10:50am Ramblin' Ray:

Happy Juneteenth Doug and listeners! Amandla!
Avatar 10:52am Wolfganglia Storkophone:

Don Pullen so good - and Roy Brooks the only choice for Dougie-Baby Bed music!!
  10:52am Listener Gregory:

I only saw Don Pullen as part of the original Mingus Dynasty. The piano the venue had was so bad he stopped playing in the middle of his solo. Danny Richmond went to the front of the stage to point out that the piano was not tuned but that Don was so good, he would go on anyway. But Pullen decided to play almost no notes, à la Count Basie. It was not his usual style, and I was very disappointed.
  10:53am wendy del formaggio:

I’m with you, Doug, on “New Grass” and will seek out the reissue. “Everybody’s Moving” is one of my favorite songs. It’s a wild, fun, fabulous tune.

Third Man Records reissues are usually high quality LP only releases. Looking at their website i saw nothing more than saying it was great music that deserves re-issue. Nothing about remaster or additional info / material.

Death to the klan indeed!
  11:53am Dean:

Read plays by LeRoi Jones (per the print volumes) in high school. A review of two of his one-acts in the NYT, late '64, praises his work but takes him to task for "the urge to shock by invoking violence and all the obscenities he can think of." Which might explain why in high school I liked to read LeRoi Jones. But the review also notes that a "Larry Rivers" did the set design. Good lord, I wonder if that was the Larry Rivers!

Thanks, Doug, great show!
  11:55am Listener Gregory:

I heard Steve McCall in a duet with a saxophonist, whom I didn't think was playing well. Then I realized I could just focus on McCall and enjoy the rest of the concert. That was a formative experience.

Last sentence of the long review: "Indeed, he is so full of talent and fire that he does not need to thumb his nose at his audience."
