"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

Hey John, good morning
  9:04am Don Pickles:

Tom Recchion did a lot of great album sleeve design back in the day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05am adampsyche:

If Hell has Jazzes - might be the place...
Unfortunately - I think it's basically right here...
Avatar 9:10am TDK60:

Hi JA, was listening to WKCR the other day and they had a special on this show coming up at Town Hall on Curtis M.'s music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am steveo:

woah i just started a comment 2 minutes ago that started out "i turned on wkcr the other day" but then it was too mean and i deleted it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am steveo:

(it was about a particular wkcr personality)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am steveo:

also john & everyone, did you see that trombonist Craig Harris is doing a performance event at the brooklyn botanic garden?
Avatar 9:15am TDK60:

It's called "Sounds of Justice" with Sun Ra Arkestra & William Parker's Inside Songs of Curtis Mayfield
March 4, Town Hall.
Avatar 9:15am Strandlund:

My stream keeps cutting out...and this song is TOO GOOD for that to happen!
  9:18am Banoonu:

woah good looking out on those shows tdk & steveo, thank you
Avatar 9:23am TDK60:

Banoonu, I listen to KCR occasionally--good station. (I sometimes even turn the radio off and play a record on my stereo.) But it's mainly here that I pull my radio cushion up to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am steveo:

i often check out kcr and bgo whenever my blood's jazz levels are low
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& WWOZ...What is bgo ?
Between FMU & Podcasts - already too much to pick up on!
  9:30am D Free:

Thanks for sharing the music John Allen!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am steveo:

Hi D(iL)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am TomDash:

G'mornin John and all. Digging the 3-letter word bands! "groove" indeed...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am David (in London):

Can only have three letters in their name. Just saying.
Avatar 9:49am TDK60:

Rev. WBGO is jazz, also a blues show. KCR is jazz with some classical/etc. too.
  9:49am Banoonu:

always a sucker for jazz flute.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am steveo:

@rev i also like kcr's gospel/bluegrass/countly shows on Sunday mornings (and the bach around christmas)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am steveo:

r*
Avatar 9:58am TDK60:

By the way, I feel WFMU's current blues show is one of the most fun I've ever heard. Steveo: yeh, that WKCR Bach fest at the end of the year is awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

fiveash is great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Booz:

A steel piano is just 88 tuned drums
Avatar 10:07am PKNY:

This Victor Brady track is straight fire!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Booz:

Or maybe a steel drum is 88 tuned pianos. Some such.
Swag For Life Member 10:07am Andrew_in_WI:

Is Joe McG out there? Would this be considered pan-demonium?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Ike:

Wow, steel prog?
Avatar 10:08am Joe McG:

@Andrew: I have Victor Brady on my premium, but not this smokin' track. Maybe I should change it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...approval is pan-demic...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Joe - Let us know how that notion pans out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am David (in London):

@Joe McG - You are like the Cenobites from Hellraiser. We summon you, and you appear. But instead of bring a multi-dimensional pain box, you bring Single File.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am WillCrete:

So good to hear this Billy/Kahil /Malachi trio! Deep. Indeed, looking forward to hearing the current incarnation of Kahil's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble play tonight in Chicago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am steveo:

joe are you spying on us???

also, the violin was great
Swag For Life Member 10:19am Andrew_in_WI:

@WillCrete what's the venue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am WillCrete:

They are playing at the Promontory in Hyde Park
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am David (in London):

@steveo - It's the age of Surveillance McGaskoism. Don't tell Mark Hurst, he'll go loopy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Ike:

Which WFMU DJ was that voicemail message for? LOL.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Ken From Hyde Park:

A JAZZ T-shirt would be a nice marathon premium to have.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am David (in London):

Brother Ron, hit that wah wah note and make it float.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am steveo:

i dig this stooges and am glad i'm not financially responsible for replacing their snare heads
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

These kids were too much. Starts wounded & vulnerable & wonky - & by the time he hits 'FIRE' - he's invoked Pluto & it's raw power... When they were absolute warrior underdogs...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& if there's another Rawk album that is a ceremonial invocation like 'Funhouse' - I don't know it...
Avatar 11:03am John Allen:

Ken, problem solved:

  11:03am Polyus:

Still one of my favorite records, thanks JA.
Avatar 11:08am Wanda the Wonderful:

WOW, I haven't heard Leigh Stephens in forever. (Amazing guitarist of Blue Cheer).  I actually saw Leigh perform the song you played live at the Santa Monica Civic with his band Silver Metre as the opening act for Traffic. Those were the daze.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am steveo:

oh it will be hard to resist that shirt
Avatar 11:10am John Allen:

no need to resist, steveo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am tim from champaign (now washington):

Thanks for the Opal, JA. That record is one of my all time favorites.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am David (in London):

@Wanda, that's very cool. Great guitarist whose career never prospered as it should have done. That said, he was probably his own worst enemy - I tried to interview him once and it was like trying to get blood out of a stone.
  11:13am AndrewC.:

Is this a Pale Saints song, or an Opal song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Leigh Stephens on the 1st Blue Cheer is a cornerstone Guitarist. Very important.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am Krys O.:

This will always be Clay Allison: www.discogs.com...
  11:17am AndrewC.:

Interesting, I've had the Pale Saints record for 30 years, and never knew that was a cover.
  11:17am prudy:

thanks for the rainy day...much appreciated...
Swag For Life Member 11:18am Andrew_in_WI:

Psue did a nice tribute yesterday as well.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Ike:

Don't you mean Bruce?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

I think he was referring to Breezy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am tim from champaign (now washington):

Bryce should call his show "Cool Breezes and Satin Sheets with Bryce".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am crateslinger:

staying tuned from 9 am to 3 pm on Fridays is the litmus test of a true WFMU listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am crateslinger:

or better yet - if you're a "listen-at-work" kinda guy like me, then listening from Fabio right through til Sheila B is the meat and potatos.
Avatar 11:43am John Allen:

The Bryce featuring Breezy Bruce. Got it!
  11:46am spodiodi:

as long as they play omd
  11:47am spodiodi:

if you join Bryce and Duane, you almost have Batman
  11:48am spodiodi:

good morning, JA, listeners
Avatar 11:48am JakeGould:

@crateslinger: Fabio is not on Friday. Unless you are on meth and working from 3:00pm Thursday to 6:00pm Friday non-stop.
  11:52am morphe':

Who let Bryce out early??? Or is Kenny G filling in because JA had a specific appointment at DMV?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am steveo:

think of all the great knife fights we'd hear, though, if fabio was next
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Ike:

@tim, still not as good as "Better Investment Banking with Bryce" which actually the title he used briefly in the 90s if I remember correctly!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am tim from champaign (now washington):

Dragging the Line by Tommy James?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: holy crap--that title is as beautiful as a blender brimming with golden marbles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Ike - now that is a great title.
  11:54am morphe':

ps.. Whatever happened to Tony Coulter???

pss.. The original Jesus' Blood Never failed me - never failed me...

Avatar 11:56am coelacanth∅:

crateslinger i've surely listened to wfmu straight from Fabio to the beginning of Sheila B, with trips to the drummer stream during dave the spazz.
(not that i need to pass a test)
Avatar 11:56am Rev. Turnip Druid:

dig.
Avatar 11:57am Hubig Pie:

Moi aussi
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57am David (in London):

@coelacanth∅ - I realised the other day that after about 14 hours straight, I probably needed to switch FMU off for a bit and give my ears a rest. They were dull hours to be sure. Also, hello.
Avatar 11:58am coelacanth∅:

haha David i know what you mean!
  11:58am Francis from France:

Great show , thanks John . Beautiful discoveries
(Nexda was my favourite one)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am steveo:

my ears can rest when they're dead
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am Ike:

The real question is, whatever happened to Douglas Wolk? I mean besides moving to the west coast.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am David (in London):

Thanks JA, another great AM.
Avatar 11:59am coelacanth∅:

well, yeah, giving my ears a rest means putting on an album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59am David (in London):

@steveo - The title of your autobiography I reckon.
Avatar 12:00pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

satan never did me no harm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Booz:

Thanks JA, and thanks all. Always a high-quality board on Friday AMs.
  12:00pm morphe':
