"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

@steveo - Some still do (including me), but you say it when saying goodbye rather than hello.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21am Handy Haversack:

@David (in London), has our long (inter)national nightmare come to an end? Are you freed?
Avatar 9:21am Bethany Ryker:

This Alice Coltrane Live from Carnegie Hall LP that we're hearing could be yours, for pledge of $20 or more to WFMU, holla! Get your pledges in now!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

I need to get out of the habit of chattering my teeth together during jazz drum solos. That can't be doing long-term good for the enamel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am David (in London):

@steveo - An equally old-fashioned greeting might be 'Wotcha'. Kids used to say it all the time in the 70s, but few do today sadly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am David (in London):

Wotcha Handy. Yes, like the Israelites, I have been delivered from bondage. And man, t'was a cruel bondage indeed. (Will reply to your DM today as well).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Handy Haversack:

I, like the angels, rejoice at your delivery, David! John and Snoochie and I managed to keep the lights on for you.
  9:31am allanINtoronto:

Thank you WFMU, for playing Alice Coltrane on this beautiful Friday morning. Always fantastic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am streetwaves:

The Alice Coltrane was lovely but the repetitive JA is making my head explode.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am David (in London):

@Handy - It's good to know that the Crew are keeping a welcome in the hillside. I had to be out of London, at the arse-end of a distant industrial estate, in the pouring rain. I got back to the station thinking 'I must never leave the radio-side again'. Ever. Ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Hugo (NL):

hi there! Like jazz but kinda miss the wake up - buzz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Oxidized:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ike:

Phone calls *do* cost something too! Well at least for us weirdos who use prepaid phone plans instead of wildly expensive unlimited BS plans. I take that money I save by using a prepaid plan and donate it to FMU!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Ike:

Prepaid phone plans: they’re not just for crack smokers and bus station residents anymore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

"The department now has 666 firefighters."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

i'm looking forward to wearing your premium, john, just for the cognitive dissonance caused in the minds of the folks who say "wfmu, is that the fordham station?"
Avatar 10:11am John Allen:

comments board suspiciously quiet today Steveo. Can you stir the crowd?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am TomDash:

I'm just trying to process the mid-season, program change, John Allen - where am I gonna hear Deke Leonard and Slovenly now? Good Luck raising the $$$!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am steveo:

i can't believe the phrase "cognitive dissonance" didn't rile everyone up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am steveo:

Avatar 10:16am Strandlund:

Thank God my cats are not on catnip right now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am TomDash:

My dog has had issues with sounds emanating from WFMU - oddly, she seems very stoic right now.
  10:20am Banoonu:

came for the jazzical stylings, STAYED for the Keith Jarrett-Silver Apples beef
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am David (in London):

I had a JPEG of a poster tied to a lampost that said 'Have you seen this cat?' with a picture of Miles Davis on it ('Answers to the name Miles'). V amusing, thought I. My friend Clive suggested that he'd been seen on the corner, which was a goodly reposte.
Avatar 10:21am Hubig Pie:

Gotta have the look
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Handy Haversack:

Though both jazz and regular cats basically are all like, "Answer to a name? Sure thing, squaresville."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Mick:

lurking in the background as usual lately, but since you asked - here's to John Allen, TBA, and JAZZ!
  10:39am Cubicle Carl:

I think my specialty is deferring to JA and the other great WFMU deejays
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am WoodsOfNH:

I have to say, the supposed brilliance of Kamasi Washington is lost on me.
Avatar 10:46am John Allen:

Woods, I think he gets a lot of that. He's been around, settling into being a leader.
Swag For Life Member 10:46am Andrew_in_WI:

DJFCS is now jazz because JA says so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am WoodsOfNH:

@John Allen, I sometimes wish I'd read none of the hype. By the time I got to The Epic, I was expecting my head to be blown clean off. Instead, it sounded to me like stuff I'd heard from Pharoah Sanders, Ayler, etc. Still, I'm glad he's got people excited. Always a good thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am David (in London):

@WoodsofNH - I second that emotion. I had exactly the same experience after a friend of mine had bigged it up so massively. But, as you say, glad people are listening to it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am TomDash:

The question remains though, will you have a 70s hard rock showdown/throwdown with Clay next week? I guess you could go deep into 70s JAZZrock...
  11:17am P-90:

@Woods of NH: I had the opposite experience, I first heard parts of The Epic when Scott McDowell played it on FMU, when it was brand new, and having read no hype and with no expectations, I was a bit blown away by it. So: yeah, seeing or hearing a lot of hype before experiencing a record, movie, or whatever can change that experience, one tends to compare it to the threshold of enthusiasm it has inspired in other folks, and it may never seem worthy of the hype...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am WoodsOfNH:

@P-90. Right. I'm also guess that if I had a chance to see him live I'd totally dig it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Handy Haversack:

@TomDash, does WFMU have an official bookie to lay odds and assess wagers on such battles? Because I have been looking for more volunteering opportunities ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am TomDash:

Thanks JA - always part of my Friday morning routine!
