The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

  9:01pm Eargasm!:

WBCN always had this in rotation. I love this album. Speaking of 1960's Bosstown Sound, I was told The Beacon Street Union is playing a couple of shows in the Boston areaw/out Jerry Jeff Walker
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm Gina Bacon:

Hey, Doug In Boston!
Avatar 9:02pm bigplanetnoise:

Eargasm - Beacon and Jerry Jeff?
Avatar 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

and apparently some a-holes of the present have called their band "circus maximus"
  9:03pm Eargasm!:

without Jerry Jeff.
Avatar 9:04pm bigplanetnoise:

coelacanth∅ - there is only ONE Circus Maximus on BPN!!!
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

Eargasm i don't think it could be anybody related to the original group. they look too young.
Avatar 9:06pm coelacanth∅:

oh it's a "metal" band from norway. i guess that's forgivable.
Avatar 9:12pm bigplanetnoise:

Big, big thank yous already to Rich Carstens and Mailman Tom! SOOOOO much appreciated!!! ❤️
  9:12pm Eargasm!:

I cant remember where I heard it, but I was lead to believe there were original members participating, Coelacanth. I could be wrong!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Gina Bacon:

Thank you, Doug P!!!
Avatar 9:18pm Julie P.:

Yeah, you can't feed them too much or they'll be everywhere.
  9:18pm CC:

Typical un-typicalness!!!
Avatar 9:18pm Julie P.:

Congas, Gina - congas.
Avatar 9:18pm coelacanth∅:

so, maybe there's a reformed circus maximus from the ashes of the original, but the band that i came up with in my initial search is strictly norwegian and relatively young musicians
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth∅:

haha. tribbles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Gina Bacon:

Right, Julie!
Avatar 9:19pm bigplanetnoise:

Well Gina, I LOVE bongos. And you. But - the two together? I dunno. Save it for the beach, I say. And- there's the whole likely knock-kneed thing you'd be dealing with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Gina Bacon:

  9:20pm Eargasm!:

I think we are talking about two different bands. I was mentioning Beacon Street Union.
  9:21pm Eargasm!:

Been a while since I've played Oh! Pleasant Hope. I need to give that a whirl!
Avatar 9:21pm coelacanth∅:

haha! funny, eargasm. so the communication via world wide web is not perfect after all!

Avatar 9:37pm Dominick:

Are they vibes or marimbas?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm Doug Schulkind:

That was indeed Blaine. He was like Gary Maddox, centerfielder of the Philadelphia Phillies, about whom it was said, "Two thirds of the Earth is covered by water, the other third by Gary Maddox."

One third of the Earth was covered by Hal Blaine.
  9:38pm CC:

the vinyl version of that brings out the high and low notes much much fuller?!?
Avatar 9:38pm bigplanetnoise:

Marimbas only if someone is standing backward, pretending to pee on the cover.

@Doug: Bruce Gary, the drummer of the '70s Knack (I like that I have to specify which Knack here) once said he was surprised to find out, and I paraphrase, that his favorite 10 drummers were Hal Blaine.
Avatar 9:41pm Julie P.:

There was a time when I REALLY wanted to play sitar, but they were expensive, and lessons hard to find, so I went with acoustic guitar instead . . .
Avatar 9:41pm bigplanetnoise:
