Options August 25, 2019: You Can Sample

Over the past three decades I have been sampling for music projects. From recording to cassettes... to saving on floppy to zips... to organizing on the hard drive. Today we are going to hear those samples back-to-back for 4 hours.

Thousands of files have been sourced for future 'You Can Sample' shows. This is the first installment of 3,400 sounds.

Some quick notes on the process of collecting samples:
- In Windows 10, searched all sample folders for *.wav
- Used a tiny program, 'Bulk Rename Utility' to randomize the order of files and apply a number prefix (00000)
- Selected blocks of files in the folder (in 4 hour sets for future shows)
- Open Appended Files in Adobe Audition (and took a screenshot that appears below)
- Used another tiny program, 'JR Directory Printer' to print the directory contents of the files in the folder to a text file.

Volumes are erratic and all over the place. Hey, welcome to sample land.

Oh, and I'm listening to this for the first time today, live with you on the show! It's all random and I'm sure we will hear some funny bits colliding with one another.

like the drag race announcers used to say: "sunday Sunday, SUNDAY!!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:03pm Mr Fab:

Yum, free samples. A whole show of sounds skewered on a toothpick, handed out by Otis.
Avatar 2:04pm Otis Fodder:

Hey Mr Fab!
Avatar 2:05pm Don-O:

I made it JUST in time for the noise!!
Avatar 2:05pm Otis Fodder:

4 hours of random nonsense. Hi Don-0!
  2:05pm John from Florham park:

So did I will give it a listen
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:09pm Mr Fab:

Aw C'mon, Otis! No filling in the playlist with artist/title/album/cover-art FOR EVERY TRACK? You're fired!!
Avatar 2:10pm Otis Fodder:

Ha! Could you imagine. Need that watch that stops time from The Twilight Zone please.
Avatar 2:14pm Don-O:

'EARACHE, MY EYE....and the rest of my body.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm Yvang:

Hi! I like the concept here!
Avatar 2:16pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Yvang, thanks

And hi John
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:17pm Mr Fab:

Glad to see John, Don-O and Yvang here. so SOME folks are hip to Otis' move to Sundays!
Avatar 2:18pm Otis Fodder:

Welcome to the isle of Persuasion. Today the island is overrun with sample critters.
Avatar 2:19pm Otis Fodder:

I figure this show also provides an inner view to my headspace as I took all these sounds and organized them so they must mean, something... or nothing at all.
Avatar 2:24pm Don-O:

....in Canada.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:24pm Jan Turkenburg:

Hi everyone!
Avatar 2:26pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Jan! Yay, you are here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Jan Turkenburg:

Yes, life!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Jan Turkenburg:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Jan Turkenburg:

live life live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

yay! i am here too!
Avatar 2:31pm Otis Fodder:

Live for Life = Great Francais Lai Soundtrack.
Avatar 2:31pm Otis Fodder:

Oh, hi GST, yay!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm Jan Turkenburg:

I will be listening mostly outside in my freshly clipped garden out of reach of the screen. It's a beautifull evening and it's too damn dark in the house. :-)
Avatar 2:34pm Otis Fodder:

Love to listen outdoors too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Mr Fab:

Really enjoying the show, tho i feel like this should be driving me mental. Guess I'm already there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

right behind you, Mr Fab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Jan Turkenburg:

I'm not the only one playing music in the street, so I have to turn up the volume a bit :-) :-) :-)
Avatar 2:37pm Don-O:

I'd love to listen to outdoors but it's 110 degrees out there. The "joys" of Arizona.
Avatar 2:38pm Otis Fodder:

I think after listening to Negativland and John Oswald and others over the years... this is pop music to the ears. Just a 4 hour single, rather than a 3 minute 30 second one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Jan Turkenburg:

another heatwave coming up here too, next week...
Avatar 2:41pm Otis Fodder:

If this was the 80s/90s again, I'd release four 60min cassettes of this show. Which by the end of this "You Can Sample" series we will have over 24 hours. Planning on 6 future shows, maybe 7 or 8. At least 4.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Jan Turkenburg:

Considering following your example Otis... I'm back in again... I fel through my chair and cut my finger... wow... I think I'm lucky I didn't break it... Hey... After Tea sample!!!
Avatar 2:46pm Otis Fodder:

Yes, After Tea!! Great single there.
Avatar 2:47pm Don-O:

I know we haven't reached the one hour mark yet, but this does feel like an eternity so far.
Avatar 2:47pm Otis Fodder:

Hope you are okay, ow!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm Mr Fab:

You fell thru your chair, how does that happen?! Like, you're so skinny, you slipped thru? Or you're a ghost with no bodily mass?
Avatar 2:48pm Otis Fodder:

Jan Ghostenburg!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:50pm Jan Turkenburg:

No, anything but skinny, that's the problem... The plastic chair collapsed under my weight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

This is kin to my cassette of repeating grooves i recorded for many years. I always had this one blank cassette at the ready and whenever a record would start repeating, i would record 8 repetitions. Haven't listened to that in years! Hope it hasn't melded.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Jan Turkenburg:

cut my right little finger on the torn plastic. Treated it the way I was tought and put a plaster on it. The throbbing is fading now, so I'm pretty sure we're in the clear...
Avatar 2:54pm Otis Fodder:

Oh, yea! If you dig it out GST, I would love to hear it. If you like, I could play some on the show? Tape fun time!
Avatar 2:55pm Otis Fodder:

Jan, I hope this madness is moving pain from your finger to your ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:55pm Jan Turkenburg:

What a fun idea GST!
Avatar 2:56pm Otis Fodder:

You know, that would make for some great bits for the Sheena Stream. Granny Spicy Tuna Loops!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:57pm Mr Fab:

yeah GST, you gotta dig out that tape.
Avatar 2:58pm Otis Fodder:

I sent Fab my entire oneshot VOX folder of samples for the Sheena stream. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

Otis, that's exciting, i'll see if i can't locate that gem. I used to do all sorts of kooky things with a tape-to-tape deck. Never even graduated to an 8-track.
Avatar 3:00pm Otis Fodder:

Love to hear... and play... planning another guest/segments show to air in September.
Avatar 3:02pm Otis Fodder:

Jan and Georgy have segments ready to go for the September show + a couple other listeners. Will most likely air in 2 weeks but will confirm in the next week, sourcing a couple more submissions, which is open to anyone who wants to throw me 5-20 minutes of audio to play.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:02pm Jan Turkenburg:

"you and your husband may continue intercourse."? Somebody actually recorded that sentence?
Avatar 3:06pm Don-O:

Hmmm, I might toss in a segment this week. I will let you know a 3 days....
Avatar 3:07pm Otis Fodder:

Please do... dodododon-oooo
Avatar 3:07pm Otis Fodder:

You can't spell Don-O, without, Do!
Avatar 3:07pm rawvegetable:

This is awesome! There are so many laugh out loud moments.
Avatar 3:08pm Otis Fodder:

Hi! I wish I had a spoken sample saying "raw vegetable". It would fit perfect!
Avatar 3:11pm Don-O:

Well, "though darts!"
Avatar 3:14pm Otis Fodder:

Listening and cracking up at the random samples, this is sorta like an AI version of Wayne Butane!
Avatar 3:15pm Don-O:

If ANY of this made sense, it would sound like Wayne Butane.....sorta.
Avatar 3:20pm Don-O:

....oh, and ass the occasional f-bomb.....
Avatar 3:30pm Oliverrr:

Avatar 3:31pm Otis Fodder:

Hey Ollie!
Avatar 3:32pm Jason Elbogen:

Otis, you COULD actually do a accuplayist for this. Although I suppose you could end up hospitalized trying. (But since you've got everything already typed up on that .txt file...)
Avatar 3:35pm Jason Elbogen:

[just recognized Raymond Scott]
Avatar 3:36pm Otis Fodder:

Hi Jason, yes, that would be nuts!

Lots of Raymond Scott (samples used on a Basta album, Raymond Scott Rewired) a couple of years ago.
Avatar 3:45pm Don-O:

heard a couple of ELO slices in there.....
Avatar 3:47pm Otis Fodder:

You sure did!
Avatar 3:51pm Otis Fodder:

There are a lot of soundbytes of WFMU DJs reading off Bran Flakes song titles that I recorded 1999-2001 while listening. Used to use them in our live shows years ago.
Avatar 3:53pm Linda Lee:

this is fabulous!! working on the cabin & can't chat, but it's wonderful.
Avatar 3:53pm geezerette:

Cartoony !!! :D

Hi there, Otis and all!
Avatar 3:54pm Otis Fodder:

Linda Lee & Geezerette appearing at the same time. What is this magic, love it! Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm Jan Turkenburg:

Just hopped back indoors. Did I hear a Ducth Kids' BOOM a while ago? :-)
Avatar 3:56pm Otis Fodder:

You sure did Jan... you and the kids are in my sample library. Also, I have that special In My Spaceship CDR you made me years ago in a stack here of things to play on future shows. Treasure it buddy, amazing stuff.
Avatar 3:57pm geezerette:

Magic is right! Howdy, Linda!
Working as well, hard to do while laughing but I'll manage.
Hi, Jan!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Jan Turkenburg:

In fact this is rather soothing to listen to, One wouldn't expect that (don't know if the neighbors agree with me though...)
Avatar 3:57pm Otis Fodder:

We still have 2 hours. How do you feel? A. Great ... B. Not so Great ... C. Numb ... D. My favourite 4 hour song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Jan Turkenburg:

Hi Geezerette, Linda, Jason, and... everybody I've missed above!
Avatar 3:59pm Otis Fodder:

3,400 channels and nothing to watch this week on Friendly Persuasion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Jan Turkenburg:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Mr Fab:

Funny, i thought Wayne Butane, too. Like a while back, e.g.:
- The girls feel disillusioned and definitely heartbroken..
- Tough!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33pm Mr Fab:

i might be the last one listening, Otis!
Avatar 4:35pm geezerette:

Can't stop laughing!
Not commenting cause I'm crazy enough to be working and listening at the same time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm Jan Turkenburg:

No you're not
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm Jan Turkenburg:

that was @Mr. Fab :-)
Avatar 4:37pm Otis Fodder:

I'm listening too. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm Mr Fab:

When my coworker comes in, I'll put on my headphones. Sometimes "Not Safe For Work" doesn't refer to bad words.

Yes, Dr Rebecca Liswood is back with her one-liner!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:59pm Jan Turkenburg:

Well, this was fun and as I said surprisingly relaxing. Have to go now. I will be ripping this from the archives for future listening and of course cutting to bits ;) Thanks Otis!
Avatar 5:00pm Otis Fodder:

...and I'd love to play what you come up with (or anyone does) from this. Send me file links at otis@wfmu.org all.

See ya Jan!
Avatar 5:20pm geezerette:

Fodder for thought!
Thanks, Otis; greatly enjoyed. :)
Avatar 5:54pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks for listening here today or tomorrow there.

Back next week with more sounds... guaranteed to last over 10 seconds!

In the meantime check out other Friendly Persuasion archives and our full Sheena show schedule at, www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Mr Fab:

heh, just heard a sample: "damage the brain." Yep. That's what we're all about. Thanks for this, Otis. Very happy with the super unique shows the Sheenas' DJs have been coming up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Mr Fab:

tomorrow's programming starts with the kookoo rocking sounds of "The Record Roulette Club." See you-all there!
Avatar 5:58pm Otis Fodder:

...and a big shout out to all the archive listeners here. I know, I'm one listening to archives more than the live streams with work and life and the usual interstellar planetary travel. Cheers all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:59pm Yvang:

I had to leave the room for a while but I will definitely check the archive of this very cool show!
Avatar 6:02pm Otis Fodder:

Thanks Yvang and all. Have a grand rest of Sunday. I'm off to make some nachos.
