A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Thank you for this. Happy Birthday Ms. Simone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24am melinda:

It was a bummer to hear it used in a commercial for something that showed people struggling to get out of their clothes or something silly like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Webhamster Henry:

This is the way to do Baltimore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Phillippe Bastille:

As gloomy as this song is, it makes Baltimore sound better than it is. Source: person who group up in Baltimore
Swag For Life Member 9:28am tadpoles:

Great version of "Baltimore".

  9:36am Marc15:

Can you play excerpts from your archived shows? For the French Birds?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Webhamster Henry:

I have a good non-French bird disk that's only Birds mentioned in Shakespeare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Webhamster Henry:

I like the live Nina performances that show up on air every once in a while.
Avatar 9:39am HarktheUmpire:

Thanks for the link, steveo! Great and sad photos indeed
  9:41am prudy:

illuminating docu but I felt it was in many ways too biased in perpective by her husband/ex-manager who was abusive and controlling.
Avatar 9:42am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Phillippe Bastile-did the TV Show The Wire get Baltimore right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Webhamster Henry:

Simone/Brel = great combo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Adrian in London:

Hello Trouble. Loving Nina
  9:48am fleabane:

trouble, your idea of a calendar as a swag is perfect.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Webhamster Henry:

Did Nina ever actually do a show with Jacques?
  9:50am thelma blitz:

she sings Brassens Il n'ya pas l'amour heureux on A Single Woman. Thanks for this Nina set. I've been a big fan since the 60s.
Avatar 9:50am Trouble:

thanks@ fleabane. maybe i should get on that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am steveo:

  9:51am thelma blitz:

I can send it to you. Is there an e-mail address?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am melinda:

I Think It's Gonna Rain Today is another one of my favorites.
  9:53am thelma blitz:

No, Nina never performed with Brel. In fact, Jacky and his girlfriend used to make fun of her accent, but its good enough for us anglos.
  9:53am prudy:

agreed Melinda, human kindness is overflowing...Thanks Trouble for this great set.
Avatar 9:55am Trouble:

@thelma: are you asking me for an email address? or perhaps you are talking to another commenter, hard to follow and play records at the same time. i am troubleatwfmudotorg

Here it is on Youtube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM1u72MNLuI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Phillippe Bastille:

@Neil Never watched it, believe it or not. Did not have HBO. Haven't seen a lick of Game of Thrones either. Homicide: Life on the Streets was pretty good. We went to the prop sale after the show ended and I got some stuff from Kyle Secour's wardrobe. Always had fun wearing one of the ties to a meeting and saying "Before I got this tie, every time it was worn someone got murdered..." UnderArmour bought what was the old police station property and turned it into a high end hotel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am jamesie:

love to you and listeners allover the world xxxxx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Adrian in London:

@Philippe Bastille I LOVED Homicide. The idea of your wearing Tim Bayliss's ties is marvellous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Barney Grubbs:

aww. wasn't a big to-do, but first dance at our wedding was to Nina's spell on you (screamin jay would probably have been too much)
  10:03am thelma blitz:

Il N'A Pas d'Amour Heureux which Nina sings on her last album is a poem by Aragon set to music by Gerorges Brassens. Could be the saddest love song ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM1u72MNLuI
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Cmurtha:

Ooh, I'm glad to see I have not missed my favourite Nina Simone song(s) yet.
Avatar 10:06am quinn:

yessss this is my favorite
  10:06am Maria D:

Thank you for this tribute, Trouble! I'm sure I'll be listening to it over and over.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am Webhamster Henry:

We Want Nina!
Avatar 10:07am Roberto:

Will this be the 43-minute version or the 57-minute version?
Avatar 10:07am HarktheUmpire:

aaah yeah, I remember hearing this on that same show. This one is absolutely brilliant! Thank you for playing it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Passaic River Blues:

Nina now, Nina forever!
Avatar 10:08am quinn:

i'll never forget duane playing this the morning after the election. you know. THAT election.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Phillippe Bastille:

@Adrian Unfortunately, his ties are the only thing I can wear. He and I were the same size at the time, so I have a suit and a couple shirts as well, but I'm about 30 pounds away from getting back in them.
Avatar 10:12am Roberto:

Oh snap my daughter loves Tim Bayliss!
Avatar 10:13am Davee:

Hey, I'm really enjoying the Nina this morning - thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Greg from ZONE 5:

Any day you leave the house listening to Nina and arrive at work still listening to Nina is a good day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Panda Penguin:

Trouble, this song is one of the best things I've ever heard on WFMU. This entire show so far has been glorious - thanks so much. Ordering a copy of Emergency Ward! as I type this, too.
Avatar 10:18am Trouble:

happy to hear @ panda penguin. this is an outstanding nina simone that it took me 30 years to discover...there is always an amazing nina simone song around the bend
Avatar 10:18am Joe non Papa:

A few years back the Brooklyn Museum had a show called Art of the Civil Rights Era (NOT the recent Art in the Age of Black Power). It was held in two large galleries connected by a small hallway. In that hall the museum ran a loop of Nina performing "Mississippi Goddamn!" Very powerful and maybe the best part of the show.
Avatar 10:19am Trouble:

@roberto the album says this is an 18:29 minutes medley
  10:19am elwyn:

i really hate this song so much. does it ever end?
Avatar 10:19am Trouble:

@passaic river blues: nina today nina forever is going to be my presidential campaign slogan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Phillippe Bastille:

@Neil Have you come up with a plan for approaching the problems your son is encountering?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am sphere:

hullo people.
Avatar 10:21am Roberto:

Thanks Troub. I didn't know there was that short of a version!
  10:22am Sandra:

This Nina medley is everything
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am sphere:

i'd vote for you trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Passaic River Blues:

@Trouble: Yes! Trouble 2020!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Colleen:

This is so good!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Cmurtha:

Who is your running mate trouble?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am sphere:

i think today's show has a theme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Cmurtha:

This does indeed slap,
  10:26am thelma blitz:

Play Sinnerman. nothing rocks like that! Four Women, her own composition, I Lloves You Porgy, her breakthrough hit, Mississippi Goddamn, her activism, Summertime, her Wild is the Wind, Lilac Wine inspired Jeff Buckley, Flo Mi La, a rhythmic masterpiece, See Line Woman (she loved to do it live) Ballad of Hollis Brown, profound Dylan cover, Plain Gold Ring, first albm, my first LP for my first heartbreak! Thanks so-oo much for the show. I miss aunt Nina.
  10:28am sweir:

This mix is awesome! Thank you Trouble!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Cmurtha:

I hope we get to hear Four Women!
Avatar 10:31am Lixiviated Life:

  10:35am Sarah:

This is the set I needed this morning
  10:37am prudy:

awesome trouble, thanks for playing this remix!
Avatar 10:37am ranjit:

This is the second time today that Good King Wenceslas has been trying to sneak into my consciousness
  10:37am blee:

Thank you for this fantastic show today, Nina and Trouble!!!
  10:40am Listener Gregory:

I feel I must fulfill my role as moldy fig by expressing my disapproval of this remix. Actually, I don't dislike it that much, but the original's best qualities are lost in it... IMHO!
  10:40am thelma blitz:

Nina's Little Girl Blue inspired Janis Joplin to cover it on Cheap Thrills. It was the title of her first legit album on Bethlehem, 1957 , was it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am kuba:

this has the same bleeps and bloops as that great stefan goldmann / tuomi thing... plus christmas. i'm in weird heaven
  10:41am prudy:

thanks Moldy Fig!
  10:45am Listener Gregory:

Moldy figs don't rule, but they can remain unnoticed in the back of a cupboard for many years. That is my goal.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Webhamster Henry:

Now after a short break, maybe we can get an hour of Alice Coltrane, for no reason at all?
Avatar 10:54am Honeybear:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am melinda:

@Adrian & Philippe I loved Homicide too, I even taped shows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am joe:

The picture of Almendra on Wikipedia looks like it could have been taken in 1993
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am melinda:

Homicide is where I first heard Nina's Sinnerman. The used great music.
Avatar 11:12am Trouble:

sorry the playlist has frozen on my end, difficulties abound today, no updating just now

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am rbx:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am karlward:

DJ Simon killing it. I covered my windows with beads, patchouli so strong it makes the record skip.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Ike:

IMHO the best seasons of Homicide were 1-4. It was not as good after Melissa Leo got sidelined by the writers and then fired (though when Giancarlo Esposito showed up, he did great w/what he had to work with). Really glad that Leo eventually got her due in movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: Leo is awesome. Her performance in "Frozen River" captures Upstate misery like nothing else.
  11:24am holland oats:

fantastic set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am sphere:

@ Ike - I did not know that Melissa Leo got sidelined! I had such a crush on her. Passaic River Blues is totally right. BTW, I have visited the Daily Grind and it is pretty much the same place. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am tim from champaign:

Would DJ Simon be interested in sharing who at FMU he's related to?
  11:28am chris:

checking in from Boston! I grew up in Argentina, these are some great choices! Sui Generis was fronted by Charly Garcia, a LEGEND of Argentinian rocks. Pescado Rabioso was fronted by Luis Alberto Spinetta, another legend. Both were self-taught instrumentalists
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am melinda:

Homicide did go downhill toward the end.
@PRB upstate misery, totally. Good film.
Avatar 11:31am Trouble:

awesome! @chris, gracias for checkin in with the info!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am TomDash:

Hey Trouble - great show as always and man, Simon is just killing it! Talk about a well-curated 175 record collection! Go Simon!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am tim from champaign:

Trouble - If DJ Simon's open to talking about this, I'd be interested in knowing when he started getting into weird sounds and what was the first thing that knocked his socks off when he was younger?
Avatar 11:39am Dominick:

  11:39am zpulpa:

This is all soooo shredding!!!!! I’ve got it in headphones walking to the bus in the sun feeling good.

I'm loving this set by DJ Simon, a great future lies ahead
Avatar 11:39am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Philip-he will meet with the principal and his antagonists and come to grips with what was done. He will also see a counselor to deal with his stress.
Avatar 11:42am Listening Out There:

It's Modern Trouble time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am Ike:

Not only was Leo great in critically-acclaimed indie-type flicks, she is also outstanding hamming it up as an evil supercomputer in a friggin' Tom Cruise movie!
Avatar 11:47am βrian:

Loved her in Treme.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Phillippe Bastille:

@Neil That sounds like a good plan. I was going to suggest maybe contacting the bus company to take care of any stuff going on there -- I'm sure they want a clean record for the next recompete. As the parent of a child that did turn out to be a bit of a bully (overcompensating for a learning disability, as is sometimes the case), don't be surprised if the parents are the last to admit their kid is the problem. Good luck to you and him
Avatar 11:47am Trouble:

i will update the playlist late, to repair the frozen damage.. thanks for tuning in today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Passaic River Blues:

I know they are Chilean but Sui Generis made me hanker for some Aguaturbia.
  11:50am holland oats:

ok this is the most adorable set in fmu history
Avatar 11:51am jdaFromCologne:

off and out. till next week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am tim from champaign:

Forget Julian Cope, DJ Simon needs to write the South American Rock Sampler.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am tim from champaign:

Or I should say Rock Nacional Rock Sampler.
Swag For Life Member 11:55am tadpoles:

Simone and Simon...a great morning thanks Trouble.
