A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

We had a skunk kill 21 of our chickens over two nights.
Avatar 9:40am Roberto:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Trouble:

omg@emilsagro...that is horrible! one of the reasons i no longer have chickens in my city backyard is because of the raccoons and skunks: it was tooo scary
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Stevel:

In Denver, we had civet cats. Looked like skunks but stank all of the time, not just when they sprayed, which I think they could do. Faced one down early one Sunday morning on my paper route. I froze. It stopped, looked up, turned around... and trotted off. I started breathing again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am dei xhrist:

Skunko: to encourage evacuation, tip your speakers over the nest area and blast something with beats or shrill. Then pour some pee on their doormat
Avatar 9:43am Itzall Ablurr:

On that skunk tip; disregard any and ALL of the "remedies" you have heard about removing their pungency from a dog or person who has been aptly blessed with it. NOTHING works, trust me.
  9:43am judy from croton:

Have fun on your birthday sigurdur. You have a beautiful musical name
Avatar 9:43am jt:

We used to visit a skunk in a storm-drain as kids .. everyone was friends ..it was like a new mender of "Our Gang" we fed it grapes.
Avatar 9:44am jt:

Catch and release would be fine if someone really knew what they were doing....
Avatar 9:44am TDK60:

Put on "Love Stinks" by J. Geils Band and point it out the door?
  9:45am ignatatus666:

The skunk had already sprayed you were clear to leave. Unfortunately for you it was close to the house/apartment.
Even if you startle a skunk just stand still and they will leave when ready. They aren’t normally afraid of humans as long as you aren’t walking towards them. Skunks have no issues with walking towards you. Of course this is when you have no dog with you.
Alas the Deer. Skunks do not care about the deer and Vice Versa. Cats, dogs, coyotes, bears. Those are skunks problems
Avatar 9:46am WmKMoss:

Skunks can spray up to 10 feet quite accurately.
  9:46am Barbara:

Avatar 9:50am TDK60:

..stock up on tomato juice?
  9:51am ignatatus666:

Itzall ablurr: the closest to a remedy is making a paste of regular strength dawn with baking soda and peroxide. The paste must remain on the dogs skin for a minimum of 10 minutes ( or soak clothes in this solution) rinse the dog and repeat the process . Again in 2 weeks do the same process. It’s 98% effective. My dog has nailed to my dismay 9 skunks. It’s a natural enemy . The 2% negative is when the dog sweats a lot or it is humid outside. Even then you can bathe again as long as it’s not within 2 weeks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Trouble:

happy birthday sigurdur!!
  9:51am Emilsagroforest:

Try a have-a-heart trap prewrapped in a garbage bag. Then you can leave it on someone’s stoop with the open end facing the door.
  9:53am judy from croton:

My father in law lured a skunk into his car and drove her a mile down the road. No spray. Guess they like car rides
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Balls_Benedict:

Came to say good morning and then got distracted by the skunk talk.
Avatar 9:54am Sigurður:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Adrian in London:

Hello all. I have just had the BEST lunch!
Avatar 9:55am TDK60:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am Trouble:

these skunk ideas are fantastique! i almost enjoy the fact that i am being terrorized by this dang skunk ( my neighbor feeds stray cats, so i am sure it is coming for the nibbles)
  9:56am ignatatus666:

TDK60 the Tomato juice never worked. It’s been a waste of tomato juice for 50+ years.

Avatar 9:57am Itzall Ablurr:

Dear ignatatus666, I hope I will never have to test that option, but it's good to know. Also, I LOVE that you left exactly a TWO PERCENT margin of negative owing to sweating. Good job. :)

Avatar 9:59am Itzall Ablurr:

My most recent experience with SMELLING "skunk" was on a motorcycle ride behind some folks who were enjoying the day a LOT, if you get my drift. Contact high.
  9:59am Captain Strange:

My grandmother not only made friends with all the creatures she fed, but she also got the cats, raccoons, dogs, foxes and skunks to make friends with each other, like in a fairy tale.
Avatar 9:59am TDK60:

Oh, Ignatutus: the tomato juice is a myth? Cross that off..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am Trouble:

thanks @karlward, will check it out
Avatar 10:00am still b/p:

Recipe of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and dishwashing soap is on Humane Society site, says it's good stink remover for animals and humans, and includes this: "..if you’re washing your dog or cat, don’t leave the mixture on longer than you have to as peroxide can bleach fur."
So that's also how you could get to your Pepe Le Pew plot device and keep turning/celebrating the circle of skunk!

Here is a fun little "thing" about my birthday.. I'm soooooo special... .
Avatar 10:36am Sigurður:

Normally, the chance of being born on any given day is 1 in 365. But for leap babies, it's four times that, plus an extra day. That comes out to 1 in 1,461. So only 0.07 percent of the world's population shares a birthday with Adam — assuming birthdays are uniformly distributed throughout the year.Mar 1, 2016

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am Tommy in Neversink:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34am ɛɨk:

@tadpoles, what really rubs salt in the wounds to me is when some far-leftists (with whom I otherwise often agree) claim we deserved this because of all the elections that the CIA and other intelligence agencies have interfered with. I mean, jeez, the CIA is not the USA and the USA is not the CIA. And then they scream "you're apologizing for America!" at anyone with the chutzpah to point out the horrible things that intelligence agencies have done.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am ɛɨk:

("They" in the last sentence being certain reactionaries, not the leftists, of course.)
Avatar 11:37am Wild Neil||Peace All:

@Ike-The CIA has done some sketchy stuff to be sure.
@Phillippe-we are working on it. The school is taking action against the perpetrators, and we are documenting everything in emails and are prepared to go the Superintendant if needed.
Swag For Life Member 11:37am tadpoles:

Ironically @Wild Neil I'm old enough to remember when Britain joined the EEC as it was then called. So that generation...who are the older folks now being the ones to mainly vote for Brexit have upset the cart for the younger generation who voted to Remain in biggest numbers.

I'd ask John if that's the same "working class" who "spoke" here in the US after Trump was elected....and where has that got them? Disaster in my opinion.

@etk..I'm very left like you and agree entirely with you. Cheers.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Rich in Washington:

I have this weird thing about some audio books. Some of the readers are so damned peculiar - like they're one of those text-to-speech simulations - just really weird, unnatural inflection. And I often see that that particular reader not only reads a lot of books, but seems to get high ratings by audio book consumers on say, Amazon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am zpulpa:

Scott McDowell's "cheap reggae 45's" segments are maybe the best bet at converting a non-reggae listener.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Roger & Amanda's premium is WFMU DJs reading books. Maybe that kind of audio book will take off.

was anyone else not surprised that Zoe isn't guest hosting any other FMU shows this marathon?

I am still not used to my own voice, even though I can make it work. I think if I was going to do an audiobook, the only appropriate subject would be the history of the Muppets or something.

@ Wild Neil - you're a hardcore PKD fan! wow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am zpulpa:

is there somewhere online where the premiums can be viewed?

IIRC Dave Hill mentioned that narrating his own book was really really difficult. Apparently it's much harder than you'd expect for most people.

Trouble you have a good voice for reading Children's stories. I know Clay did one too.

@Sphere-actually, I have only read maybe six or eight books by PKD. His IDEAS are great, but the writing can be difficult going sometimes. Heinlein is easier to read-but has his issues. Neal Stephenson is a favorite. Read Cryptonomicon if you get a chance.

I took a 'how to write and read news copy for radio' class and couldn't get the hang of the roller coastery delivery style. It was really difficult. Having to accent certain verbs, etc.

Thanks for a great show, Trouble
