A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Only got to see bits of the dog show, but I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who feels that Bean the Sussex Spaniel was robbed.
  9:38am Listener bop monroe:

Yes, so true. The imagination is better. The translations always disappoint
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38am Buddha of Suburbia:

Beautiful! I needed this. LOVE dramatic French music.
  9:38am βrian:

@steveo: Don't forget The Rat Patrol.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Cmurtha:

I wish we'd do away dog breed standards, or at least later them a great deal. Gotta remove that inbreeding and those really unhealthy traits, no matter how adorable they may be (looking at you pugs/bulldogs)
  9:39am prudy:

thanks for avoiding the trite banal pablum of the usual love songs. But I still want to hear Kim! (SING!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am melinda:

I am feeling crabby and bitter toward today's holiday, I'll be honest. Maybe thinking about dogs instead will help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am melinda:

@Oscar haha
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am steveo:

@beta I don't think i ever saw an episode of rat patrol, sadly
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Cmurtha:

alter them*
Swag For Life Member 9:42am Flowers_For_Bokonon:

I would love to listen to a show dedicated to canine-related songs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Parq:

Oscar, sez I, the one who got robbed was Burns (yes!) the longhaired dox.
  9:42am Listener bop monroe:

Mutts rule.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am melinda:

@Cmurtha I agree. There is a bulldog in my neighborhood and the noises he makes sound unhealthy.
Avatar 9:42am βrian:

@steveo: Well, don't binge-watch them all on youtube like I did. Doing so is not easily explained to friends and family.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am The Oscar:

When I was a kid one of my best friends' parents raised Pekingese. One time I accompanied them to a dog show in Westminster, Massachusetts, which led me to believe for YEARS that I had attended the Westminster Dog Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am The Oscar:

@Parq Following some googling I concur that Burns is, indeed, a good boy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am melinda:

@Oscar it must have been disappointing when you figured it out.
Swag For Life Member 9:45am Flowers_For_Bokonon:

Forget football--our family thanksgiving isn't complete without watching the elegant bitches of the National Dog Show
  9:46am Adrian in London:

Hello all. There’s a good episode of 7 Days Out on Netflix about the Westminster Dog Show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am steveo:

@βrian: haha. noted.
Avatar 9:47am Trouble:

my favorite dogshow moment: verb the dog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am The Oscar:

@melinda I was, though I also thought it was odd that such a prestigious event was held at a grubby Sheraton off Route 2.
Avatar 9:48am βrian:

Purebred Himalayan cats are disposed to dental infections. The one we had seemed kind of grumpy until he had surgery. After that, he was a pure bundle of joy. (And no more rancid breath.)
Avatar 9:48am Trouble:

and of course there is the fantabulous movie, 'best in show'
Avatar 9:49am Dances with Moomins:

Good morning New Jersey
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49am Cmurtha:

Best in show is a great movie, so is the film following the fake Folk Bands the name of which I can't remember/
Avatar 9:49am βrian:

What? Parker Posey?
  9:50am Listener Gregory:

I'm hearing the guitar, but I don't hear the cassettes in this piece. Especially concerned that it is apparently on a 10" record instead of a cassette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am The Oscar:

Agreed! As great as Fred Willard is in that movie, for me Parker Posey is the one who should have won every award.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am melinda:

He's got....2 left feet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am melinda:

Cmurtha it was A Mighty Wind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Barney Grubbs:

I am waiting patiently for Blue Beaglers to be recognized by the dog graders
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Webhamster Henry:

I didn't see their Mascot movie, which I suspect might be the right thing to do.
  9:55am Adrian in London:

@ßrian @TheOscar I’ve just read Parker Posey’s memoir. It’s certainly, uh, idiosyncratic.
Avatar 9:55am Roberto:

I saw Parkey Poser at City Bakery in like, 2003 once.
Avatar 9:56am Roberto:

Also spotted at the same City Bakery: Todd Solondz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Cmurtha:

Thank you Melinda! Its such a good film.

I thought for a half second this was the "Are you Afraid of the Dark" theme song, I was confused to say the least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am The Oscar:

I got to see Harry Shearer speak maybe a decade ago, and in the Q&A someone asked "Is Fred Willard remotely like the people he plays in Christopher Guest's movies?" Shearer responded, "Fred Willard is not remotely like a person."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am EG_Astro:

Posey narrates her book for the audio version, and I thought it would be a lot of fun but it was just ugh, a bit too much!
Avatar 9:59am Roberto:

I've admired Fred Willard since Fernwood 2 Night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

@gregory "[S] tarting 1997 the tape recorder became important, not only for recording and editing, but also as independent instruments.

A tape recorder has the possibility of generating feedback, which can be controlled to make music."

YAAS Lefty Banky!
  10:01am Ashley:

I love the intro of this song means I’m about to hear either The Left Banke or Jens Lekman’s “Black Cab” WIN WIN
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01am melinda:

Ashley I thought it was going to be Black Cab, I never new the connection until now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am TomDash:

ahhh...The Left Banke
  10:02am Adrian in London:

@EG_Astro at what point do you think the editor just shrugged and said “Yeah, that’s fine”?
  10:03am Listener Gregory:

@steveo I had a cassette recorder that did that once... Where is it now, I wonder?
  10:04am JakeGould:

Fred Willard and Catherine O’Hara are great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am Buddha of Suburbia:

This is nice.
Avatar 10:06am βrian:

No styrofoam for me. That's bad news.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am steveo:

I also found a lovely book by Terence Dwyer called "Composing with Tape Recorders" (29 MB PDF) monoskop.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am queems:

ah yes, this reminds me that i need to make a cappuccino
  10:07am Listener Gregory:

Styrofoam is gone in NYC. Join the modern world, NJ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am Rich in Washington:

Oh man! I hate leaving my coffee behind! It's maddening! I call it phantom coffee syndrome - continually reaching for my coffee in its cup holder and it's not there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am melinda:

Eww, styrofoam also stinks when hot liquids are added.
Avatar 10:07am OsloCoffee:

We hear you loud and clear!! LOL --will send more today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Rich in Washington:

and no purchased or office concocted coffee comes close to my own French pressed brew.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Crudbringer:

The last disappointing takeout coffee I had came in a paper cup... but the snap-on plastic lid was 1962 hospital basement pseudo-teal (not a trendy mid-century modern aqua, it was an institutional color), and there were promotional materials attached to the side of the cup. I was NONPLUSSED.
  10:09am dawktor dgzei:

Styrofoam is a hyperobject. See Timothy Morton on Art in the Age of Hyperobjects.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Sean d:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am enocaster:

I'm no fan of styrofoam, but paper cups are actually worse for the environment in some ways. Contrary to most assumptions, there is no clear-cut (um…) "better" environmental choice when comparing the two.

A man and his smoking jacket ...
Avatar 10:18am Trouble:

when wfmu moved into this building in the late 90's there was nothing here except a truly sub par 24 hour diner, and an italian deli that closed very early in the afternoon. there are now a few chains, and you know what that means. so yes to me this area is a coffee dessert. which is fine by me, since i am a big fan of bringing my own. that works great, except when it doesn't
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am melinda:

I use a ceramic pour-over device for coffee.
  10:21am Listener Gregory:

Paper cups can be recycled in NYC's system, but not everywhere.
Avatar 10:22am βrian:

www.abe-research.illinois.edu... :
"Very small amounts of styrene can leach out of polystyrene products and into food, especially under high heat. Therefore, avoid using foamed polystyrene containers for heating food, especially food high in vitamin A, which can add to the leaching effect. This includes such food as cheese pizza, carrots, and instant oatmeal. Hot liquids, especially tea, may also cause some leaching. Very high doses of styrene act as a neurotoxin."
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

@melinda: Us too. Then the filters/grounds go into the compost destined for blueberry plants.
Avatar 10:26am Roberto:

It may be a coffee dessert but is it a dessert desert?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Rich in Washington:

One of the first things I did when DJing at KBOO was break NOT ONE but BOTH of the (restaurant style) coffee pots while doing the dishes late one Friday night. Imagining the poor early morning Bluegrass/Country DJs white-knuckling it without coffee made me feel terrible, so I immediately found replacements at some restaurant supply house and returned them. I was worried it would curse my presence there. Terrible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Passaic River Blues:

@Melinda: I find that's my favorite method, too (though I will also deign to consume swill--caffeine addiction often trumps considerations of taste). And there's no shortage of excellent coffee in Portland, ME!

I wonder what are Trouble's favorite coffee varieties and methods of preparation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am queems:

i reeeeeally like drinking coffee out of paper cups. i bought one of those ceramic cups that looks like a paper cup but it isn't the same. today i opted for this big ass handmade mug with a weird cat on it that i got for 99 cents at a salvation army
  10:29am prudy:

enuf with the coffee! I love it too but...
Avatar 10:29am Roberto:

Coffee dessert, yes, you know it's good news.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am steveo:

at my office we are blessed with an Eye-talian automatic espresso machine which grinds on the fly .. very nice. i usually dilute it ("coffee" setting) to make it last a little longer.
Avatar 10:31am βrian:

Major Dickason's Blend®. Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am melinda:

@PRB true! Two of the 3 pour-over coffee places in town favor the light roasts, which I'm less fond of, but I have developed an appreciation for them even if it's not my standard brew. Also, I will even drink decaf swill sometimes (I am caffeine-sensitive), just to have a coffee-like hot beverage. I bought a jar of Sanka when I was in JC for marathon last year!

I actually watched the Westminster Dog Show this last week....(grandmother was head of the WV AKC, so, I guess it rubbed off on me)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Passaic River Blues:

Verb was indeed gifted, but what about Winky the lazy and easily distracted bichon? That dog's dallying performance really resonated with me.

G'morning Trouble and troubled listeners. Love the playlist page art! RIP Tomi, best warped children's book illustrator ever. First day back at school after the Snowpocalypse!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am The Oscar:

@sphere It's actually funny, I don't think I'd ever have really appreciated it if it weren't for the number of FMU DJs who champion it and play it regularly. One of those rare instances where WFMU and mainstream radio are in 100% alignment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Phillippe Bastille:

Maybe that explains why I don't get invited to birthday dinners anymore...

I lived in Seattle in the early 90s and we got an inch or 2 of snow (quite unique back then)- a car tried to drive down the STEEP hill I lived on and of course plowed into my car. They are not used to snow out there...in Seattle...I think the town had like 3 plows?

There's some really fun stuff on 10cc's "Sheet Music", even though the album is a satire. Wall Street Shuffle is pretty damn good

1 cm of snow and 1.5 cm of snow shut down Jacksonville, FL, for 3 days Xmas Eve, 1989. (FL has no deicing or snow removal equipment for obvious reasons). It was a fun day to be a kid...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am melinda:

If you don't have snow plows and sand trucks maintaining the roads even a couple of inches can cause chaos, and it makes sense to shut everything down. Several years ago we had a minor snowfall that the road maintainers didn't get ahead of for some reason and all the traffic packed it down into ice. Cars went off the road, a 10-minute commute turned into 45+ minutes, and I even saw one police car crash into another. Madness.
